What's your budget? Bogles is easier to skimp on since Horizon Canopy's are non-critical. Infect is easily the best of the three but Hierarchs and Mistys aren't cheap or non-critical. Dredge isn't a spike deck.
>>
>>48206291
I thought Dredge was more spike than Bogles? I'm looking at an initial buy in of 100 or so, then spending as much as 1k or more over time. I will say I love Pauper boggles.
>>
So I'm recently single and I'm considering using all my extra date money to build jund. Someone talk me out of it.
>>
>>48206332
Modern Dredge is just a pale shadow of Legacy Dredge, which is a watered-down shitty version of Bazaar Dredge.

It's just not a powerful strategy in Modern because the cards needed to make it great aren't in the format. It's Spike as fuck in other formats, in Modern it's meme.
>>
>>48206332
Bogles and Dredge both attack from such different planes that they're both meta killers, but I'd favor Bogles since it's slightly faster and rolls over and dies to fewer popular hate cards. Dredge is fucked if it ever gets popular because graveyard hate is widespread and strong and hard to play around for it. I'd still invest in Infect if you just want to win and you have the money already. Its cards are more likely to retain value as well imo. Otherwise Bogles is pretty damn cheap and the way I'd go.
>>
So, grimmy and bbedlam are the new additions to jund making it 100% superior to junk?

>tfw you want to abzan memes and dank rhinos but wizard won't let you

>>48206408
Dredge is also weak outside of bazaar now senpai.

Hate too good, national socialism can't save the formats now.
>>
>>48206435
Yeah it's to be expected, when your entire gameplan is hoping they don't have graveyard hate... you are real fucked.

It's funny how extremely well positioned it has become in Vintage lately though. Everyone is so busy playing memedrazi and mementor that they forgot there's a deck that makes 200,000,000 zombies on turn 2.
>>
>>48206489
The thing with vintage dredge is that it works on the same vein as legacy.
But taken x1000 times as strong
>Win rate g1 can elevate up to 90% (not even memeing, that's your winrate vs people who don't maindeck hate or can t1-t2 storm win you)
>Can just grind out and fuck their face clean off with zombies
>>
>>48206507
I really hope Dredge get's played more online soon, maybe I can finally play DPS in peace without looking at either a t1 Thorn/TKS or fucking 10 billion counterspells in a Gush-Mentor hand.
>>
>>48206549
>yfw they print a hymn to tourch
>that can be cast from the grave for 1 creature and discarding 1 card
>>
>>48206414
People tell me Boggles is cheap but there lists I see have it much higher priced than Infect.

So, new Lili might see some SB action for weeny killing in vintage /legacy.

Does it stand any chance in modern?
>>
>>48206633
>>48206633
Take out the Canopys and that's -$280 already. There are other corners to cut in the manabase but that's by far the most expensive part of the mainboard, and I wouldn't advise less that 3 Paths or Spiritdancers without significant testing. Sideboard, instead of copypasta tailor it to your meta. You have a lot more latitude than you think.

Building my first Modern Deck.
It's a WU Emeria control. My budget is low and I'm picking the pieces slowly. I don't want to rush, but I want it to be decent. It's the new Thalia, Power of the Moon and Blessed Aliance worth trying?
What can I do against Waste Not?
>>
>>48206758
You are turning me from a Timmy to a Spike. Thanks. I definitely want the spirit dancers. They are just hexproofless boggles that get twice as big as other hexproof cards yeah?

I can dig it.
>>

Don't forget the card draw, literally the most HNNNG line of text in Bogles.

Will eldritch evolution see modern play? I'm certain people are going to try it out but I honestly don't think it's that good. I play Abzan company but I don't really think it's what my deck needs or really even wants.

Not in modern. The only cards with 1 toughness that anyone plays are dorks. She is actually bad, in fact you are better off playing flip lilly.

Things it kills in Modern:

Glistener Elf
Noble Hierarch
Blighted Agent
Dryad Arbor
Grim Lavamancer
Dark Confidant
Steppe Lynx
Wild Nacatl (lol)
Memnite
Signal Pest
Arcbound Ravager (lol)
Steel Overseer
Vault Skirge
Snapcaster Mage
Cursecatcher
Silvergill Adept
Master of Waves
Vendilion Clique
Bloodghast
Thalia
Flickerwisp

>>
>>48208736
It's because they don't want to keep giving it a new name whenever they want to reprint it, so they gave it a generic enough name to fit in any setting.

They've been doing this more aggressively now that they've started the 2-set blocks.

>>
>>48210878
>Bob
2/1
Only draws in your turn but always draws

>Visitor
3/1
Can draw in both turns, working well with Lilly and the high concentration of instants in BWR

If the average CMC in your deck is >1, Visitor hurts less.
>>
>>48210900
>turn 4
Or instead of your jank epic combo you could play Bob 2 turns earlier and be guaranteed to draw cards
>>
>>48210931
Play Asylum Visitor on turn 2, who the fuck cares. It's just a cute synergy, not your game plan.
>>
>>48210921
You're the same kind of player that actually thinks affinity is always hellbent on turn 2.
>>
>>48210931
Why would you wait until turn 4?
You can just play it normally for exactly the same price as Bob
But when the opponent has a Lily out and +1s her you can pitch Visitor to it and hit her on the backswing, and that's fucking good
>>
>>48210960
It's not far off. There's upsides and downsides to both. Midrange decks didn't run Bob for years so he's hardly the fucking messiah anyway.

Yeah if you have the nuts you have the nuts. The deck is just wildly inconsistent, which is why it isn't played much.

As a former vintage dredge player, the vintage deck just isn't good enough. Beating white Eldrazi is nice, but isn't any better than pounding shops. The deck can also just lose to mentor/storm/oath before it goes off more often than you'd expect.

Is this guy a modern version of Nimble Mongoose or is Delerium too difficult to activate? I was considering running 4 of him in a RUG Delver list (a modern 'Canadian Threshold') something like this

4 Delver
4 Gnarlwood
4 Goyf
1 Hooting Mandrils

4 Thought Scour
4 Serum Visions
19-21 other instants/sorcs

18-20 Lands

Is 2GGGG in two payments of 1GG and a 4 drop not good enough for modern?
>>
>>48212773
If it just hit your own graveyard, it becomes much less interesting. Being able to DTT/Murderous cut/snappy out from under Dr. S or get into DRS fights is interactive. Being able to run maindeck incidental GY hate turned dredge into a fun, interactive matchup and made P Fire beatable.

Dr. S makes magic more interactive: that's a good thing.

What do you guys think of making a card that allows you to have a commander in modern, but makes it so you can play only a single copy of each card in modern? What would a card have to look like for that to be strong enough for it to be worth using?
>>
>>48215549
Get all the good white token generators from bw tokens, get paths, bolts and helixes, proper duals like sacred foundry and fetches (painlands if you cant afford them now), intangible virtue, run smaller Elspeth, cut all that limited cards - they are bad. Move tremors and assemble to sb, fill rest of it with hate cards, like w and r leylines, rip, stony silence, disenchant etc. Then playtest on xmage and trim to your liking/meta.
>>
>>48215773
Which cards are the limited cards?
>>
>>48215860
There are a lot of ways your list could go, do you want your deck to be some kind of red/white tokens deck? If you do and you want it to be competitive then you do not yet have the cards you need at all. Instead of listing all the cards in your deck that aren't good enough for modern, here are the ones that are (note that some of these don't go in RW tokens, are only narrowly playable):

Assemble the Legion
Elspeth
Purphoros
Raise the Alarm
Secure the Wastes
Young Pyromancer

I don't think all these cards go in the same tokens deck, but these are the only cards worth playing in your list. I know that isn't very helpful but that's where I'd start. As far as cards I'd pick up (not knowing your budget)

Arid Mesa
Marsh Flats (I'll explain later)
Blood Crypt
Sacred Foundry
Godless Shrine
Bloodstained Mire
Bitterblossom
Lingering Souls
Monastery Mentor
Lightning Bolt
Lightning Helix
Zealous Persecution

You should look into Black/White tokens which is an established deck with some results. Here's a good place to start: www.mtgtop8.com/archetype?a=219

From there see if you still want red. You can go tri-color if you've got the money for the lands. RW would be harder but doable and there are fewer resources out there to help you. Hope this helps.
>>
>>48211248
Now that I have Goyfs I can play decks like this. Looks like fun. What are the good/bad matchups?
>>
>>48216444
Y-You see, I'm kinda on a super tight budget at the moment. Although I see what you're saying. The deck is supposed to be a red white token deck, which uses Purphoros and/or Impact Tremors as wincons along with the massive amount of token generation. Hence the presence of cards like Mirror Entity and Rally the Peasants for that sudden swing of death

Name the most Spike decks in Modern.
>>
>>48216633
I totally get you. This is not meant as an insult. Play pauper. It's a fucking great format, seriously, and decks are like $30-$50. $70 MAX. I'm pretty sure tokens is a thing and you probably have a lot of the cards.
>>

Jund. No one enjoys playing it but you force yourself to because it wins, a lot. Infect and Burn are also up there.

Sadly, my LGS doesn't hold any pauper events. And I like being able to use my Mirror Entity and Purphoros.
>>
>>48216905
Then play your list man, don't let me stop you. My suggestion in that case would be to cut way back on single card copies and try to acquire playsets of the cards you feel are doing you the most favors. You may not win consistently, but you will occasionally kill people out of nowhere which is always fun.

Find a local game store and get them to teach you, I'm too much of a lazy asshole and the internet is a terrible medium for such a thing. Most of them are pretty damn friendly towards new players of all ages. You could also get Magic Online and learn with that but there are additional expenses involved and collecting digital cards is completely unsatisfying. Learning the game is a lifelong process but learning to play will take like 20 minutes tops. Also, get into Limited (drafting). It's fucking great.
>>
>>48218526
There's a quite a few stores near me that play and do drafts every so often. Thanks for the advice man.

>>48216625

I'm still learning how to play all the matchups but so far I feel it has game against most decks and sideboard shores up bad MUs. RIP Treasure Cruise.

Good matchups include decks like Burn, Tron, Abzan CoCo/Elves type decks, Infect and all in combo.

Affinity is pretty even and fun.

Midrange is a nightmare, specifically Jund. Blood Moon, Huntmaster, Curiosity and Spider Umbra are all viable cards to put you on more even footing. Plus the Werewolf is a blast to plat with counterspells and cantrips.

The only things that will give you a lot of trouble are proper Wraths (not that wimpy red shit) and big 'walkers like Elspeth, Sun's Champion, both of which are pretty rare in Modern.

spark elemental comes to mind, these along with lightning bolts and boros charms would give you really fast kill potential, also i would try to get rid of the lands that enter tapped in favor of battlefield forge, its cheap and the ping it does to you doesent matter as much as long as you get the kill first
>>
>>48229520
Oh, would Sin Prodder work well?
>>
>>48229520
Okay, I know it's way less efficient, but I always liked Lightning Elemental and Ball Lightning way more than Spark Elemental.
>>
>>48229547
sin prodder would be great, the menace is really relevent, and his ability will let you close games out faster by either get more cards, or ticking them close so you can finish them with a lightning bolt or boros charm
>>
>>48212911
It killed dredge and gobos.
You are a shitter.
>>
>>48229595
i would opt more for ball lightning, lightning ele is 4 mana for such a fragile creature, you could probably fit in more damage or utility for the 4 mana instead
>>
>>48228266
Why is Tooth and Nail not more popular?
From my testing it can goldfish a fairly reliable turn 4 kill, and even when you don't draw Tooth and Nail, you're often on turn 4 with something like Garruk, Primeval Titan, or a 5+ Genesis Wave going off
>>
>>48229661
its pretty weak to enchantment hate, and your arbor elf and satyr are very important and die to bolt very easily, in my case one or 2 bolts or enchant/land hate cards can shut down your deck. that being said, the deck is very versatile and can do alot, witness+primal command lock, you can transition to stompy style play easily, and can combo off quickly. other than that i dont see why its more popular

Is Sunhome Guildmage good?
>>
>>48229728
hes not bad, you really just have to be careful of your mana, modern is a stupid fast format, so every mana you tap has to count for alot. just weigh the advantage or this on turns 2/3 compared to other cards you can play on 2-3

OP here, thanks for letting us know.

Everyone else, which questions would you like to see in the next Modern thread?
>>

how fun is dredgevine, and is there anything to protect your graveyard from being fucking obliterated by one card

I think I'm going to be building red/white norin sister deck for modern.

How about Aegis of the Gods? Doesn't really fit into the theme, but I like having hex proof. Oblivion Ring? Cathar's companion?
>>
>>48228843
Somewhat better I'd say. The thing that sucks about adding things like Mentor and Pyro is that they become targets for removal which tokens is resilient to. Casting Either of those can become a wasted turn which is why Hero of Bladehold is a better sideboard card in BW Tokens because most likely, your opponent will remove some removal for enchantment hate.

I'd personally run Purphoros as a 2 or 3 of and 4x Impact tremors over Mentor. 4x Bolt, 2x Helix, 2X Boros Charm, maybe 4 Path. Timely Reinforcements and a single of secure the wastes might be worth looking into as well

Massive raid is only good if you have at least 3 creatures and even then it kinda blows. Its like Launch the Fleet: not good
>>
>>48229969
Dude, launch the fleet would be fucking amazing in my deck. Seeing as I run Impact Tremors and the like, that extra bit of pain means life and death.
>>
>>48229661
Goldfishing is a test of speed to meet minimum benchmarks. It is also useful to sample hands and initial lines of play. It's not a test of actual effectiveness in the metagame.

>what is your top 3 best cards from the new set for modern?
>>
>>48229929
I played a few games of it and it I think you absolutely right about mentor.
I changed the tokens so I now have 3 of secure waste, ling, raise, spec. I will take out mentor for more purphoros

Spells
2 helix
4 path
4 bolt
3 boros
3 pyro
3 purpho
3 gobo
>>
>>48229996

not him but launch the fleet is one of these cards that sounds fucking awesome on paper but won't be very useful almost every time you draw it
>>
>>48229848
>How about Aegis of the Gods? Doesn't really fit int
cathars isnt that great, aegis could be a good sideboard card against some combo decks you will see, oblivian ring doesent really synergize with your deck that much maybe path to exile if you really need to get rid of something its more pricey though

Hey /tg/. I'm trying to switch into a bit more modern and I'm wondering what suggestions on a deck to play based on the decks I played in standard and my playstyle.

I played sultai control from the start of Khan's block (from the saytr way finder days too) til it rotated. I also had a boros mid-range deck I played with stormbreath, outpost siege, and soul fire. I generally enjoy winning with a mix of oppressive creatures that retain value(tasigur, kalitas, and etc.), strong planeswalkers that recur advantage and can end games, and potent removal(never cared to run many counters). I play very competitively in standard but god damn some of these people are brainless.

Open to suggestions.
>>
>>48222907
That actually seems pretty decent. Anafenza *Almost* works the same way as a lord. Rattlechains and Selfless Spirit both work well for tricky combat tricks, and being a UW deck you get access to lots of goodstuff like Azorious Charm and Eidolon of Rhetoric .
You can also use janky as fuck shit from Kamigawa like celestial Kirin
>>
>>48229661
List? I never see Genesis Waves being run in Tooth and Nail decks.
>>
>>48230166
maybe grixis control?, has value creatures, ive seen tasigur and kalitas run in both, strong removal as well as good counters

Her -2 synergizes with what I'm trying to do, and I don't have much reason to run LotV over Last Hope

A bit new to modern so explain these card choices to me
>Wurmcoil Engine: If you're already running Primeval Titan and Emrakul, as well as a Xenagos, why have an Engine? Just takes up a space that can be used for another Eternal Witness imo
>Beast Within: Never really got this card. I understand having permanent removal but having that to give another play a 3/3 just seems like you're losing something in the process.
>Painlands: This is just me but I prefer not to have painlands, especially in this deck where the only multicolored creatures are Xenagos which is a wincon to cheat onto the board with Tooth and Nail. Kessig is good too but if there no painlands it doesn't make sense for it to be there.
Everything else looks good though. I was about to say you couldn't generate red mana for Lightning Bolts but then I realized you could with Utopia Sprawl
>>
>>48229996
I'm telling you from experience in running it in my BW tokens a while ago. like >>48230095 said, sounds great on paper, then you play someone and realize its a dead card 99% of the time.
>>
>>48230424
i cant rely on utopia sprawl to generate red for kessig or xenagos, the wurmcoil is there as a way to stop burn and other high aggro strategy, plus splashing red in for blood moon can make decks just fold on the spot, beast withing is necessary removal for problem cards like ensnaring bridge, infinite combos and other hate cards

New Thread.
>>
>>48230256
I love decks like this. I either expected this to be suggested or jund or abzan. Which of the 3 have the best match ups against aggro and control? My locals is filled with burn, eldrazi, tron, hyper aggro and control.
>>
>>48230606
im not really a control player myself so i cant speak from experience, i think i would suggest jund, it has more value creatures than grixis, a great amount of removal and your deck is very flexible, ive heard is loses to tron though. the deck is also like 2 grand
>>
>>48230606
Abzan and Jund seem good against that field. Grixis Control has an awkward Burn match up, it needs Kalitas. All 3 lose to Tron.

How is Memeskai Ascendacy doing lately?

Is the new list from mtgtop8 good?
