Few questions about korea
In the last thread, someone said the Unification Church was a front for the bugs. Thing is, the unification church is a real world cult founded in 1954. Were bugs already a thing back then? If not, why did the bugs take them over? They're widely known to be a cult, so they're not exactly a good front for your evil doom cult. It'd be like if the bugs in the UCAS took over scientology instead of ripping it off with the Universal Brotherhood
They also mentioned that Pyongyang was a industrial hellscape. Why would the japs do that to Pyongyang of all places? It's the only nice North Korean city. Everywhere else is already a hellscape, no alterations needed.

>>

The cult is actually called the Universal Brotherhood. There's a while wiki page on them.
No, the bugs weren't a thing back then, nor was the cult. It was mostly a thing before the second crash, if I remember right. They weren't using the cult as a front, they were using a charity organization with the aid of some high level people funding them.

And Japan hates Korea. Why wouldn't they destroy the last nice city?

Gonna repost my questions from before.

Writing up a condensed/streamlined/fixed version of Shadowrun as a personal project. I've already got skills and attributes reworked a bit (Instruction has finally been pruned), moving on to combat rules tonight. That said, I've got a few points I'd like input on.

>Magic: I'm rewriting the entire magic system. More like Mage or GURPS RPM than the existing system. Partly personal preference, partly to eliminate the redundancy made by having spells like Slay [metatype] or Corrode [item] alongside a general version, partly to give a little more outside-the-box thinking. Is this too drastic? Spirits stay intact, though with mechanics modified slightly to fit in; technomancers... I haven't pinned down yet. I'm not sure how I want to handle them.
>Wired versus wireless. Full wired or full wireless? I'm not doing half-steps.

>What's the most glaring problem with the system that you think needs to be fixed?
>>
>>47893397
>What's the most glaring problem with the system that you think needs to be fixed?
the editing
>>
>>47893397
>What's the most glaring problem with the system that you think needs to be fixed?
It's a good system as it is. The main problems stem from the editing in the books, and all the stupid nonsense that gets overlooked by CGL, resulting in lots of fluff that doesn't have concrete (if any) gameplay rules.

I could well see a street campaign run with bunch of 10-16yo PCs, doing "shadowruns" on local businesses and maybe even criminal enterprises that are threatening their families/hoods?.Magic talent has no age limit and little brats will probably pick up AR pretty quick. It's probably combat/muscle they'll be lacking, if they haven't got a troll?
>>
>>47893524
>>47893539

Well, I'll personally try not to be so awful with the editing, at least. I don't disagree that it's a good system- I wouldn't be working with it if it was bad. Just see places for improvement.
>>
>>47893647
I hope you realise that nobody is going to use your snowflake version of the system, right? There's already tons of houserules out there that people use on the parts of this game that aren't as defined as they should be.
>>
>>47893691
Yep. No one's gonna use it but me. And that's perfectly fine. It's a springboard for working on other, more unique projects; I don't have the game design experience necessary to write up something from scratch yet.

Aw hell no, bitch. Fool me once, shame on me. I'm not dealing with your crazy ass again.
>>
>>47893397
Bloat is the biggest issue.
There's a lot of subsystems and just... stuff, that doesn't work or is redundant because of existing stuff.

Hacking and magic both suffer heavily from this, but the skill system too suffers heavily from the stupid there.

So if you streamline that then that's a good start.

As for wireless vs wired, it depends on what you're going for.
If you want the silly 80s neon shtick, then go wired.
If you want serious cyberpunk, wireless is a necessity for your Brave-New-World meets communist china style surveillance state.
>>
>>47894157
Yeah, like I mentioned I already pared back some of the skill bloat, and if magic gets bloated, it's from me being bad. I'm at work or I'd dig my draft out to give specifics.

Wireless is my preference personally, and probably what I'm going with.
>>
>>47893548

Juviegang campaign would be awesome.

It's more or less my current character's backstory, and it would be really fun to actually play through.
>>
>>47893548
>Magic talent has no age limit

Not entirely true. People "Awakening" before puberty is exceptional. A kid of 15 already having a good handle on his powers is good but not really extraordinary, but a 10 yo would be pretty amazing. (And the kid probably nabbed by an organization or other because young powerful and still malleable recruit would be too good a thing to pass up.)

They seem to be lacking magical support and a medic.

This one should do just fine. She can bring some extra "firepower" into battles and clever use of ice spells will allow for breaking doors by having the freezing water expand, making the ground slippery for the enemies or even cooling down computers or something.

Not to mention that when the face does something stupid and gets a bullet in the knee or the street sam takes a few hits while protecting the team her healing spells will be handy.

the other thing might be awakened critters (if they're dual-natured) or the mage(s) themselves

The Unification Church is actually is totally a bug front in Shadowrun, not a mistake about the Universal Brotherhood. Check Shadows of Asia.

As for why the bugs infiltrated it, the bugs aren't really 'logical'. Some crazy cult guy within the Unification Church summoned The Queen and it all went to hell, and then the bugs smartened up their image by fighting the BTLs to get a better public image for more warm bodies to stuff bugs into.

And no, I don't know why the Japanese turned Pyonyang into hell city.

Anyone ever played a shadowrun game set in India?

Another place it could take place is Japan but I've.... got a pretty good idea what to expect there. While not the same game/tech level, I have played L5R with the DM before so I kind of know what sort of themes to expect and so on.

Heck I even already have a couple character ideas for a character from there.... Just not one for India.

Not a lot of ways to come back from that one. Better hope the one who showed you up is some kinda legendary Ghost in the Machine type hacker that's more myth than real. Least then, you got punked by a legend and can spin it to save face and maybe even earn extra cred on top. Make that shit up whole-cloth if you got the skills for it after you've dealt with your rival

Nartaki?
I don't think they're covered in the book I'm browsing through.

And I just mean that the warrior is spooky looking; I mean I know it's Shadowrun and people are somewhat used to the bizarre. But a giant blue man with four arms wielding giant weapons would make anyone scared I would bet.

Nartaki are the only human metavariant. They're the classic 4 arms, brightly coloured skin guys. In Run Faster if you want the rules, they've only been around since the Year of the Comet.

It's always the damn Nartaki people want. Plenty of good character ideas there, but everyone wants to play fucking Kali. I know CGL hates us, but read Shadows of Asia and think outside the box

Long Term binding just forces them into a particular job for a year and a day.

Yeah, I agree. But that's the fun. You could do what this>>47901566 Anon is saying, though I was gonna try to fix it in a really roundabout way.

Take over the facility, make the place new HQ, and offer her a better deal.

This isn't D&D, where you get to claim the hobgoblin's lair by stabbing them all in the face. You can't just take over a Shiawase facility through main force, and even if you could you could never stay there; an army will be there to shoot you to pieces within hours.

>Or would she just kill me?

There's no way for you to force the spirit to come with you. She's going to obey her orders, which certainly cover 'splattering shadowrunners who try to trick and/or fuck her'.

The best way to go about it is to get a job at the facility as security and work there for the rest of your days, jacking off with a kitsune btl while thinking of her. The second best is to get good at banishing and summon her back on your terms (assuming you're a Shinto mage). The third way is to kidnap the mage that originally summoned her and force him to conjure up your waifu forever, on pain of death (though this strategy inevitably leads to the Shiawase mage escaping after ordering her to bite your dick off).

There we go, I can do that. That last bit is a bit of a risk, though. Guess I could keep him around incase things go south and just geek him.

>Holding Your Breath
>A typical character can hold her breath for 48 seconds (16 Combat Turns). A character who wants to hold her breath longer makes a Swimming + Willpower Test. Each net hit increases the length of time the character can hold her breath by 1 Combat Turn. After that point, the character takes 1 box of Stun damage at the end of each Combat Turn. This damage cannot be resisted. Once all the Stun boxes are filled, the character passes out.

>a character may trade in 4 dice from her
dice pool in exchange for an automatic hit.

you get 48 seconds base, 30 seconds 'free' from your stun condition ticking down to 0, so just about everyone can hit the 1 minute, 18 seconds mark.

How long can YOUR runner choke on a dick before they literally lose consciousness?
>>

>>

I don't see how they would. An OXSYS cybergill though, provided this situation takes place in water, might.
>>
>>47902758
I got a swimming of 10 and a willpower of 6, with a body of 5 and a pain editor. So let's say I just buy the hits. I also, however, have that positive quality that gives me +3 physical condition.

So 14/10 Condition Track.

If I turn on pain editor, I can go until I go critical, for 2 Minutes, 50 Seconds.

If I max it out however, I can do 3 minutes and 30 seconds or so.
>>
>>47902955

>>47903067
Oh I fucked up, it's a Swimming + Will, I just instantly added the strength to it. My bad.

It's actually a 4. So I got 10 instead. Not gonna bother redoing the math though.
>>
>>47902981
>>47903141

I will, then. 10 dice = 2 free hits, so

48 + 6 = 54 seconds, + 33 seconds from your stun track, so 1m 27 seconds before you factor in the Pain Editor.

The extra 13 boxes give you 39 more seconds, so that's 2 minutes, 6 seconds (and you'll be seconds away from death).

I'd say that this one >>47901566 is closest to right on how you'd try to approach this.

Ideally, what you'd want is another mage with you to do the banishing. Then before the spirit's next action where it's gonna go back to the metaplanes, you make a summoning roll to get the spirit to owe you some favors.

Just have it stay around and try to negotiate non-magically. From there you could get a spectrum of rewards, probably ranging from Callling (Fox) to the spirit's name.

And in just about any case it would let you call up that spirit later. The means and powers gained would vary depending on what you got as a reward. In particular, the Calling (Fox) would always have the chance of some other possibly stronger fox spirit answering. Or a nastier fox spirit answering.

4: Anything you might need to rely on to save your ass but isn't even secondary (Running/First Aid/Con)
8-10: A decent secondary.
12-14: A primary ability.
14+: A highly focused primary (Adepts, mostly)

Depends on the group. Usually best to talk about playing stuff like SURGE, shifters and metavariants with the rest of the group during chargen- some DMs don't like them for mechanical reasons, and some groups don't like them for theme reasons (playing a bunch of street thugs which happen to include an extremely rare metasapient from another continent is a bit jarring).

Oddly enough, people really overestimate how rare some things are in Shadowrun. Most of the 'Weird shit' is still in the full percentage point which makes them not much rarer than redheads. Most people know a changeling or two or see them at uni and work.

Not necessarily. A lot of SURGE cases (especially Class II and III, where they can't hide their nature) are pushed to the edges of society, and their distribution is wildly uneven thanks to mana spikes. Most shifters stay in the wild and in Awakened nations (and there's 200,000 worldwide according to RF, spread across all the variant species). I can't find good numbers on the number of SURGE cases, but I'd be surprised if it was a 'full percentage point' of the global population.

You might see a changeling as a wageslave, but it's pretty damn rare considering everyone but Evo gives them the cold shoulder.

Even then, though, most people have probably at least seen a weirder changeling in their lifetimes, assuming they've seen more than 400 people who were alive when Halley's Comet passed.

OK? That doesn't undermine the fact that >>47907267 is wrong. Changelings are very rare and it's incorrect that most people know a couple of them as part of their natural social circles.

On the topic of >>47907015, if a character concept starts with justifying being one of 200,000 individuals, and having to come from a different continent, then it's pretty damn rare. Most Surged are Surge I. That's barely a change. Those ones are still very much able to work as part of society.

Mind you, justifying 'Coming from another continent' isn't really something that needs to happen in a modern or cyberpunk game. The world is a very small place.

Unless, say, you're a SINless metasapient (i.e. not likely to get a SIN from anyone but a handful of nations) terrorist in a world that is extremely balkanized, who needs to be the kind of person desperate enough to commit crimes for rent money. Again, not insurmountable, but another hurdle.

I don't know why idiots who can't into math keep banging the 'red hair' drum. There's 70 to 140 million people in our world with red hair; even counting the general population decline from VITAS, it's still tens of millions of people if the 1-2% stat holds (and considering that modifying a fetus' hair colour is easy, designer babies are a thing in SR, and red hair is desirable especially among women, it's totally possible the number has gone up).

RF says there's 200,000 shapeshifters, and Runner's Companion says it's 1% SURGE. The redheads are still much more common.
>>
>>47907926
Except one percent of seven billion...is seventy million. If nothing else, that's exactly as common.

Runners says that between the various new things (Excluding pixies as they are a complete unknown) it's 2%. So 1/50 people isn't metahumanity as we know it.

There is also tens of millions of SURGED.

Before metasapiens were recognised as such (and still in some places), they were used for experiments and security purposes across the globe. You can find them just about anywhere with corporate presence.

Grease the wheels.

In a lot of cities, a lot of cops do things like bringing beer every so often to the guys at the impound lot; in return, the guys will let the cops know when certain cars get brought in. It's not technically illegal (the police can find out what cars are in there if they ask, and giving gifts to friends isn't a crime) but it gives the cop a few extra hours of knowledge.

There's a lot of things you can do that basically amount to buying small favours and info, and pulling from enough sources gives you a good base to work off of, which is really the only way a PI gets anywhere.

EE's series is fun.

They accept donations and the for the money the players get extra dice, Edge points and even "favours." The players make a wish and the GM fulfills it in some way. Aavak always requests an Exterminatus to destroy Earth as it is infested with abhumans and Xenos. He wants to make the Emperor proud. So far EE hasn't granted that wish.

In two sessions they got well over 2k in donations and are a bit freaked out at all the money.

Nope. Bring a mortar drone and sniper drone and provide support from afar. Bring some turrets and have your pals carry them on a harness/ set up whenever you want. Mingle with other drones and deliver a C4 block as a part of a daily UPS visit. Rig into a system of a building and crash your opponents with doors. Bring some flying eyes and send them into ducts for surveillance. Drive around a dedicated support drone with a jammer, smoke dispenser, medkit, faraday cage compartment and mines. Add the walker modification to your car and fuck around in a mecha.

Potentially. If you get a drone that starts with high armor and body (relatively high, around 10ish) you can upgrade the drone's armor to around 15. It's less effective than having a bunch of shitty drones, but it's cooler

Basically superdrones is putting all your eggs into one basket, then putting that basket somewhere for people with pressing reasons to destroy it can take their shots with an assault cannon. Drones are expensive to tool up, and they don't have the condition monitor to survive forever. Drone swarm is popular because multiple targets>any one drone, which can never match even a middling street samurai or adept.

His street name was 'Getaway' for a reason.

The dude was a rigger/sammy, so the car was more like a drone than anything else- unless things were really bad, he'd use it as a distraction/a way to protect the decker and mage while he and I (an adept) fought it out with the baddies. If we went upstairs, he'd have it deployed below to keep our escape route clear and/or to keep the responders busy. and there was an Interceptor missile system on it, so he could direct a surprise in through a 44th floor window if necessary

I heard that there is a faster way to make characters in 5th e than priority?
What book has it and how different/faster it is?
>>
>>47912012
I think there's only the point-buy system as an official alternative, and all that does is bypass priority to give you full control over where all your points go. It's probably slower, because you have to consider everything when distributing points, not just one section.

I've not really played since 4e, though, so take this with a grain of salt.
>>
>>47912012
There are 4 ways to make a character in 5e. One (Priority) is in the Corebook, while the other three are in Run Faster. The other three are sum-to-10, karmagen and life modules.
>>
Hey /srg/, my gm decided we should try shadowrun 5e and we plan on starting soon, any general advice for a new player?
>>
>>47912340
Read the corebook. Reread the sections relevant to the character you want to make. Make sure the GM has working knowledge of the rules for the different sections of the corebook. Don't add any other book until you are comfortable with how the game runs.
>>
>>47912340
Important advice: you need 12 dice in whatever the thing you're good at is
Less important advice: if you are going to get a gun skill, get automatics.

Run Faster has the alternate chargen.

Priority/Sum-to-10 are the fastest.

Karmagen is the slowest and most customizable.

Life Modules can be the fastest if you pick strictly based on RP choices and don't look at the mechanics, but you can also spend hours trying and failing to make a character that mechanically stacks up to either system. There's modules scattered throughout many books, but the heart is in RF.

I'd recommend Sum-to-10 for not fucking over people who want to play metatypes, possibly going through all the life modules first to build out the character's history before making an actually viable version with Sum-to-10.

I let them twist. The whole point of having limited contact points is to make them choose, and then build their network. If they desperately need something, they hit up the network they have and hope that somebody knows somebody.

On that note, at one point my players needed to liquidate some items, theoretically enough raw jewels and rare earth minerals to fill a shipping container from Lagos. After spending a week hiding the hoard and dodging Wuxing, their fixer eventually got them in touch with Three-Thumb Tony. SR4 question: How viable is an improvised weapons street sam build? Improvised both melee and thrown weapons.
>>
>>47914902

Once the cops show up with armor and guns? RIP.
>>
>>47914902
...Tricky. Gonna be tricky. Adept is better for this because they can go Throw Adept, but you specified Street Sam, so...

I dunno, man. You're gonna need Clubs for melee, clearly, and most of the time having a specialization in improvised weaponry will negate the dice penalty you'll take from 'clumsy' weapons, and most of the improvised weapons in Arsenal do knife-level damage unless you're carrying a sledgehammer around, and if you're doing that, what's the point in improvising your weapons?

Throwing is even harder, since you need to be grabbing something about the size and weight of a brick to do 'throwing knife' level damage, and the size and weight of a bowling ball to do 'good' damage with it.
>>
>>47914902
You'd be better off with 4e implants and weapon launchers, imo.

St. Mary Magdalene's school for wayward girls sponsered by Ares.

>>

>>47914902

Pick up two levels of Escrima from Arsenal for +1 DV to your improvised bludgeons and 'deal damage on a disarm attempt', then take Off Hand Training (Clubs), Two Weapon Style, Disarm, and Throw. Buy up Unarmed and Clubs.

Wear a hardliner glove on your main hand if you don't have bone lacing or a cyberlimb.

Then, go into fights like this:

Pick up a random object in your off hand when you start fighting. If there's enough to fill both your hands, great, if not, grab the improvised club in your left hand. You get a +1 to parry attempts with your improvised weapon for dual-wielding melee weapons (The improvised club and your fist, if you only found one good thing to grab).

Whallop people with your main hand, choosing to reserve the off hand for Full Defense, a perk you get from your two Weapon style. Go ahead and take the -4 penalty to activate disarm at this point. You should have an extremely good parry score at this point, so anything to goad them into attacking you in melee is a good idea at this point.

If anyone gets the dumb idea of actually hitting you back, you roll your big parry pool against them. You -should- out-dice them, which means that you get an immediate counterattack with your off-hand improvised weapon, (dealing your regular damage), and their weapon gets knocked away.

At this point you can also trigger Throw to try and throw the dude you just beat and disarmed into another dude. Check your GM if this is acceptable, as it's not mentioned in the 'throw' martial maneuver but 'metahuman body' is listed under improvised thrown weapons. If your GM rules that you can't do this, probably take some other martial arts technique instead of throw, and reconsider having dice in unarmed.

I'm 8 hours late but fucking this

I been gming a 4e game for some time and one of my..."troubled" players picked up a mage and I was cool with that seeing how we was both new I spend my week making sure how spells work how drain works along with getting all the details for what spells my mage has on roll20 in handouts so we can save time along with the rules.

Needless to say when the player didn't spend time to learn how drain works and got up set that they was unable to shoot out F8 spells every round things got annoying. The following week the party did a job and the mage in question for got to clean up any traces of his magic for the 9 week in a row the player wasn't too happy when I told them that KE was able to trace him and he was going to jail he wasn't too happy and say that I either had to give him a way out or he would quit.

I'm down one player but for mages and riggers and the such for your first time make sure the player in question who wants to learn is does read the rules over the first few pages over 12 weeks with the only thing they can say back when asked if they know how the rules work is "I forgot so it should not happen."

if someone wants to play a mage or something else I am looking for one more player leave your skype

Your limiting factor is in large part going to be access to facilities. A private citizen would have a lot of trouble purchasing the machinery needed to make stuff, particularly headware.

Depends on the girl. She may get offended that you think you're dating, or that you haven't picked up on the fact that you've been dating all this time.
As for wheelman, it's doable without being a rigger but the control rig makes it so much easier to do all the cool shit a wheelman is expected to do. Maybe ask your GM if you can have a quality that allows you to reduce the difficulty like having a control rig?

Depends on the kinds of job you do, really. In terms of swiss-knife usefulness, Mage>Face>Drone Guy>Combat Guy>Wheelman>Infiltrator

Have there been any cases of a ghoul going Punisher to stay alive?

Don't know why you'd need an example for that.

There's a Vampire who noms on death-row inmates in one of the books. I forget which.

How does he get to them to begin with? He'd have to break into the prison to eat them, which will probably cause a massive security overhaul, unless the guards just straight-up feed them to him.

Bribes. Also, not necessary to kill or mail with HMHVV I.

“How do you prefer to do it?”
Red looked up from the cooler of whole blood packs, passing her a B+ as he selected an AB– Magus for himself. “How do you?”
EB paused before sinking a fang into the pouch, smirking at him through purple locks. “The clubs, where you met me. Some sick fuck is always looking for an easy little thing he can force himself on. In my case, they don’t just bite off more than they can chew. They get bit back.”
Red nodded, holding the pouch in his hands. “I have a contact at Lone Star, he gives me access to death row inmates in Darrington.”
She slurped the last of the pack down. “That must cost you a chunk.”
“Not as bad as all that.”
“At least your conscience is clean, right?” she asked.
“Yeah,” he said, “but I always make sure, just in case.”
“What do you mean?”
He took a breath. “Well, there was this one time …”

Buzz. Click. Clatter. The durasteel gate slid open to echo in the long halls. Red followed Sgt. Macnamara past the sealed rows of reinforced doors. Cell after cell of Seattle’s worst, waiting to walk to the chair.
“Forty-four, here we are. Gary Humphreys, multiple homicides. House special for you, I guess?”
“Just open the door and give us some privacy.”
Macnamara shrugged and slid the keycard into the maglock. “Fifteen minutes.”
Red walked into the spartan cell and took in the sole occupant. Humphreys was a short man, middle aged, every indication of being a standard corporate drone. He glanced up at the elf with a mixture of dread and fatigue.
“I’ve still got a week for my lawyer to find proof I didn’t do it. I don’t suppose you’re here to issue a stay of execution?”
Red advanced on him, Humphreys rising to back against the wall, his sudden fear arousing the elf’s hunger. Red pinned him against the wall with a flick of the wrist, telekinetic bonds locking the inmate in place. He leaned close, inhaling and letting the scent of terror extend his canines.
“No…” Humphreys whimpered. “No, no, please…”
“Shhh…” Red placed his hands to each side of Humphreys’ head, silently intoning the blasphemous Latin of his tradition. Their eyes rolled back in synchrony. With a twin gasp, Red broke the connection, taking a step back and appraising the inmate again.
“You didn’t kill them.”
Humphreys slid to the floor, chest heaving from the mind probe. “No … I loved them … how could I kill my own family?”
Red sighed. “Well, dinner’s off.”
“What?”
“Now I have to figure how to get you out of here.”

“So what happened?”
Red ran a hand through the hair that gave him his name and sighed. “I picked up the case where KE left
off. Found the real killer. Found a way to give the Star and Macnamara credit so I could pay down future visits. Humphreys got pardoned and moved to Boston.”
“What happened to the real killer?”
Red smiled darkly and opened the blood pack.

When I first changed, I spent my time in the worst parts of Chicago, waiting for some mugger to stick me with a knife for my credstick. As my illusion skills progressed, I could attract rapists and pimps, and get my meal even as I rested easier knowing I was keeping the streets a tiny bit cleaner. You might be amazed how many friends these sort of actions can make you in a neighborhood. You might also enjoy the side benefit of the gear and cash your meals no longer need. Aside from possibly making powerful enemies, it’s a pure win scenario.

Of course, not everyone wants to fight. Ghouls may take over necroplexes or find employment for or as doctors, organleggers, or any other career that offers them their ration of metahuman flesh. Some vampires and other vrykolakiviridae strains can get legal donors who get off on the notion of being fed on. I seem to recall a gothic nightclub in Manhattan that was run by a vampire. He had no shortage of volunteer blood donors. Or they find places where people will die, anyway. I’ve found death-row inmates to be a fairly reliable way to sate the worst of my needs without making anyone innocent suffer. It’s not cheap, but the advantages of Infection have their costs.

I don't think that's a very good molly. I always thought of her tech as being kind of bulky, with larger blades for her razors, and the eye covers protruding from her face more, like goggles.
