Lovecraft's work was built off the framework of gothic horror anyway.

The whole thing about cosmic horror is that it's the natural evolution of gothic. You peel away the taboos in favor of stuff that defies scientific thought, going from tangible horrors that delight and entice to abstractions that birth fear and paranoia out of the inability to fathom how and why something is what it is.

And really, it's a lot better than taking a Lovecraftian dump on the adventure plane like ROE did. If there were any place that would've done better justice to an Eldrazi debut, it would in fact be Innistrad.

A huge part of the block was the light itself being completely extinguished from Innistrad. Set 1 was with Avacyn's decent into madness and most of the angels with her while humanity immediately falls into madness/insanity without their guardian figure to protect her all while the evil inherent to the plane lines up to murder what's left.

And now set 2 has Emrakul's arrival taking the Gothic horror theme of the block (monsters around every turn) and twisting it into Cosmic horror with about 90% of all life on the plane now consisting of Emrakul/things that answer to that name. The whole point is it's going to be the EVIL stuff of the plane teaming up to avoid being subsumed by the Eldrazi (so werewolves + vampires + zombies + demons teaming up to kick the new stuff to the curb, with the last dying grasps of humanity being caught in the crossfire as food for both sides).

We were introduced to the demons when they were having their jailbreak and rushing off to lick their wounds, not as a major part of the setting.
