Well, when I think of illusions, Shadowcraft Mages come to mind, as does Yakumo Kurama. If you aren't familiar, the first is a D&D PrC well known for, obviously shadow magic. This is totally true yes. People want to be made to survive man. Humans will naturally want to minimize conflict, but put them in a situation where it's Fight or Die, no chance of flight, and watch them be at their best.
