Sometimes I think I would really want X, then some CYOA offer something similar, but then I think more about it "I can have it right now!" and the consequences and the other options, and I become unsure of what I really want.

I have two builds for hero academy, but I can't decide wich to post, as consequence of I'm becoming unsure about what I really want in some aspects of my life involved.

Was a tough choice between Scorn (utility factor - her ability as written has more potential than all options in power section combined) and Venom (coolness factor - the OG symbiote, plus dem teeth and dat tongue, no other one packs something quite like that). Scorn wins, because muh technopathy, and, well, just because canonicaly she does not display that grin does not mean she's incapable.

Powers to help with infiltration, and with companions like that we're ready to go, the Side-kick to form a double team, the Vigilante to learn from, get guns from and to provide support when we need to bust someone loud instead of going in quietly, and the Reporter to help gather information, and we're ready to bust heads and purge the corruption - from lowly crimlords and all the way to the top (I doubt those g-men hunting me want the symbiote to develop cure from cancer). Essencialy, picrelated with less politization and overly wanton slaughter.

What's the point of taking Housing when your character could just use the 2 billion you'd get from Money to buy a house and still have plenty left over, for example?
As for the companions, I meant that there's no real reason to have them aside from very small benefits. Nothing gamechanging or even all that interesting.
If I wanted to make a guy that's trying to start a revolution, there are only 2 or 3 companions that are even remotely relevant, outside of "these two would probably be friends" kinds of companions.

Admittedly, due to my nature as making mild variations of the same character/entity in each CYOA, I tend to bypass fluff on the grounds that my unsubtle character's story is evident regardless of lore connections. They're here to beat shit up, heal up beat shit, and spread as much knowledge on how to do both for as long as possible without resorting to worship or servitude. It rarely matters the specifics of their origins on their first construction, as they almost never rely on their origins for their intended achievements. So, naturally, I tend to skip the specifics on the first posting of the build. The plan is to have a blood-magic fighter that makes blades from his own blood (think crow from deadman wonderland) and uses those to fight. I'm not even sure who to reply to get my point across at this point, but whatever. In my opinion, balance only matters in a CYOA inasmuch as it prevents any option from being "must pick" and helps promote build diversity. Additionally, I think that drawbacks should be drawbacks, even if the actual results of them aren't entirely mechanical and are a bit more vague.

In that sense I think that the Hero Academy drawbacks are unbalanced. Especially since there's no quantifiable way to compare power levels people naturally tend to trust in their own power more and pick up extra classes. I feel like the drawbacks of Bookworm, however Box intended them, could be reworded more strongly to make it seem like there's actually some cost. Although don't forget he also said he had plans in the future that might make people regret not having as many companions. I say mostly just wait for that to happen and if you think people are building wrong then you really can't do much more than ignore them.
