So I recently started the game and built 500 points of IG and now I find them really boring and not as much of my style as I wanted.

Now I am looking into Ravenwing or White Scars and I can't decide. Using Ravenwing and Deathwing does sound like a fun concept.

I have a fairly active shop and my friend is part of the big group of 40k players so I can potentially face any army besides Eldar which I have been told isn't represented.

So I thought of some fluff for my Alpha Louisiana Women.
No one knows when this heretical cult of ominicidal women emerged, but rumors put their emergence at the end of the Old Night or during the Great Crusade. They most certainly fought for Horus during his heresy, and vent their laments of the death of their dear Warmaster by destroying all that is related to the Imperial Cult. Their equipment ranges from Imperial weapons stolen off the battlefield, armaments forged within the Eye of Terror, or even looted alien tech when the mood strikes them. They mimic heavily armored regiments of the Imperial Guard, but almost seemingly have more in common with Orks in terms of tactics. This contrasts with their highly civilized demeanor, but that may be just a facade.

They recruit by enslaving Imperial women from raids, or by producing new recruits by means of cloning or by a ritual that requires pieces of flesh of two or more participants. The last two are preferred methods as the Alpha Louisiana Women have a vow of chasity that if broken is punishable by death, and view women who have sex to be lower than Chaos Spawn.

To ensure a turn two Outflanking arrival of my fliers one of these two HQs pictured will have to be alone till it joins a unit or dies.

This is for a Pure Ravenwing list so there should be a good spread of bikers for the HQs to join upon entry.

Which would you choose?

It basically boils down to:

Shrouded Librarian on a Bike with ML 2 and a 5+ FnP for 120pt

Techmarine on Bike with 2+/4++ with a servo pack but when he passes a save blind tests units within 6"

Ravenwing are a much more elite army than white scars which may make it tough for low points, also they have a pretty cookie cutter build so you would get SM variety from WS. However RW can be played very aggressively and pack quite the punch.

Very true, but melee is literally the only thing they're consistently good at. Even if all tau had BS2 for some reason, they sure as shit wouldn't start being a melee army.

>>
>>47764795
Yes, in a way. Speculation is that they were either modified genetically or adapted to survive ocean worlds. I think there is some random line of fluff that makes them out to be good navigators too. Although, they are the closest thing to current day sharks in the galaxy. The next thing close would be Saharduin who share to genetic relation to humans or terran sharks.
>>
>>47764724
Isnt that a huge 60pt sink on top of their cost though?
>>
So we know that abhumans must be close enough to terrans to be allowed into the Imperium but does it ever talk about how close to humans they have to be to be Marines?

Is it up to Nostoman levels, or can marines be recruited with full-on cat ears?
>>
>>47764956
I think the genetic structure would complicate things seeing as abhumans move away from their human origins. Even though technically geneseeds should work, they would have to be heavily modified to accommodate the change in genetic structure and the extra organs might have to be modified to suit the host body.

tl;dr Unless the Emperor himself comes back from the dead or some heretic with the intelligence of magnus decodes geneseeds and learns how to make/edit them, no.
>>
>>47764889
I'm not sure if it was intentional or not.
>>
>>47764956
I believe so, it says if they deviate too much from the human strain they don't survive the transformation. The Emperor designed it for human biology only, not abhumans.
>>
>>47765005

Reserve rolls always succeed on a 6

>>

>>
>>47764956
>So we know that abhumans must be close enough to terrans to be allowed into the Imperium but does it ever talk about how close to humans they have to be to be Marines?

The thing about "abhumans" is that they're stable sub-species of human beings, and are only tolerated because their particular species is of some use to the Imperium (Ogryns are probably the most physically powerful non-altered, biological humanoids in the setting, Ratlings are some good-ass snipers and cooks, etc.). They are technically deviant from the base Human genome, but their deviance is within acceptable parameters to not merit total obliteration.

Trying to get abhumans into Space Marine ranks is an entirely different matter altogether. 99% of base humans don't qualify for Space Marine augmentation processes, and probably 50% of those who DO qualify for Space Marine candidacy are killed or crippled by the rigorous and incredibly demanding toll becoming a Space Marine entails. Becoming a Space Marine requires not only a perfect human genome for all organs and augmentations to take properly (and they still often won't in even a perfectly healthy individual) but also a sharp mind and powerful will to endure the hell the process takes on the mind, body and soul. Attempting to bring Abhumans into the genetic modification program as set by the Emperor dangerously risky move that plays Emperor with science AT BEST, and in reality is outright heresy by anybody who's informed in the matter in-universe.

Also, why on Earth would the noble Space Marines dare to sully their chapter with impure candidates?

Adhumans also must breed true. As in, two must be able to produce an offspring that is the same as their parents. If they don't, then they are likely tainted and get killed.

Also, you don't need to be strong or healthy to become a Space Marine.
>>
>>47765102
My question was not if they allow abhumans, it's how far from the terran strain could they be?

We know Fenrisians and Nostroman's are just a tad removed from the human strain.

So going through 1d4chan, it said the new codex stated the Black Templar worshipped the Emperor as a god, conflicting with previous canon.

What was the previous canon? Am I just misunderstanding the Imperium religion?
>>
>>47765995
Okay, picture this. You're standing on a patch of dirt, and in front of you is a pebble. This pebble needs to be picked up, and you don't know why. But every time you bend over to pick up the pebble, the title crawl music from star wars starts playing, and it's so loud that it stuns you and makes your head spin.

You can't pick up the pebble because it's too heavy. When you finally summon up the strength to pick it up, the music gets so loud that your head explodes; and you die.

You wake up on a patch of dirt. There is a pebble in front of you. Somewhere in the distance you can make out the faint noise of someone crying.
>>
>>47766142
>What was the previous canon?

That they venerated the Emperor more than other chapters, what that entailed exactly was never explicit and left vague for you to decided for YOUR DUDES, some argued that they worshipped him as a god and others that they didnt.

>>
>>47766181
that sounds less like conflicting and more like specifying.
>>
>>47766495
It's a specification that conflicts with people's YOUR DOODS headcanon.

It would also be less of an issue with 8000 Templars since that's a lot of room for differing opinions.
>>
>>47766495
Its less agency to the player, your dudes can no longer be what you want them to be as canon is changed, the chapter being zealously atheistic and sticking to the Imperial Truth as if it were religion was such a nice bit of hypocrisy in the chapter's dogma that I loved it and now thats gone. Same with the 'veneration of Navigators and Astropaths', no one in the Imperium venerates those mutant scum, they hate them, and now the Black Templars WORSHIP THEM, they used to be filled with hate for anything tainted with the warp and now they are more tolerant than most of the Imperium, couple that with the fact that they showed the 'Lost librarius' as if they had one and lost it and are waiting for it to be restored which is the opposite of what the chapter was, they dont have librarians BECAUSE THEY HATE PSYKERS, ALL OF THEM!.

Fucking GW butchered BT into something Im not interested.
>>
>>47766578
>Its less agency to the player,

It's kind of a specification that needed to be made though, seeing as how mainstream they are as a Space Marine Chapter. Belief in the divinity of the Emperor is an incredibly important belief to a wide variety of Imperial organizations, including other Marines, so that's something you really need a "yes or no" on.
>>
>>47766817
What next? You want them to explore the lost legions? Vague shit is there for a reason, for you to fill the gaps for your dudes.
>>
>>47765327
tell that to CSM
>>
>>47766817
Next you are going to say Alpha legion will get more defined.
>>
>>47766876
>Vague shit is there for a reason,

Lost Legions are completely different organizations with an absolute minimal amount of fluff beyond the fact that they once existed.

Black Templars are a mainstream, well-established part of the Imperial war machine, with well-documented practices, rituals, and other traditions that befit their status as a dedicated model line. Leaving something so important as to "do they actually worship the Emperor?" to be completely vague isn't allowing for "your dudes," it's a glaring hole in their fluff that can and will cause divisions in interpretation (as it's literally doing right now). It was likely also done so that authors could safely write about Black Templars without having to worry about suddenly having all of their work invalidated by a later decision (Or at least minimize the impact of such a decision).

You don't have to like the decision they made, but understand that choosing to come down one way or the other was something that had to be done for them to avoid conflicting lore.

No, because Alpha Legions entire point is to be vague and unclear as a Legion.

Black Templars are not designed nor fluffed that way, and are fluffed to be very brazen and open in their beliefs. It would make sense that the core beliefs beliefs are therefore expanded upon.
>>
>>47766959
>o avoid conflicting lore.

Funny reason, the entire new flufff conflicts with the old one.

So 3-5e player here. My brother and nephew are starting to play again (brother used to play, teaching his son) and I am doing well enough for myself now that I think I have the time and money for the hobby. Apparently all my old stuff is gone so we are starting from scratch.

They live about an hour away and have a store twenty minutes further but we will probably end up making a table. The shop did seem pretty active and three games were playing on a Sunday afternoon during a league

They just each got their codexes and choose Necrons for my nephew then Imperial Guard (Astra Militarum?) Start Collecting boxes.

Realistically I can put a grand into the hobby over the next three months. I have put a lot of thought and research into it and I want to play Iron Hands with small units of tactical marines in Razorbacks using a Battle Company.

I like the Betrayal at Calth tactical but that dread looks terrible.

How good would this be for the table top? Free transports seem huge, they used to be so expensive.

How do other Iron Hand armies play?
>>
>>47767103
Battle Company is stupid strong.
>>
Next week's teaser:
"More pointy ears and flyer aces. The sky's the limit!"

DE Start Collecting box made me erect with all that nice stuff it comes with and I postponed my purchase on a Tau box even though I need a few more suits + FW's.

I'll just bust a nut if it's some cool DE shit.
>>
>>47767103
free razorbacks with iron hands is probably one of the strongest lists you can make.

id say go for it but youll probably not be running battle company half the time since its OP and will piss people off unless they are running tough lists themselves
>>
What I can't understand is why the 'your dudes' guy is playing an established canon chapter. If 'your dudes' was really important to you, why couldn't you expend the little effort it takes to roll up a literal 'your dudes' chapter separate from a canon chapter that plays exactly like you want. All these people I see getting upset about the Templars being wrangled into something manageable for the lore writers could very easily be ratified by doing something the company says you should do: literally come up with your own dudes with your own colors, your own tactics, your own lore, your own numbers, etc. then, when it comes to the TT, just freakin use the rules for the chapter you like. Say they were founded from that chapter. The company gives you all the tools and permissions to do exactly this. Call them the Lack Templars because they lack any kind of constricting lore that makes you upset over imaginary space army men and how you WANT them to act.

Or maybe I'm just an asshole.
>>
>>47767273
No, eat shit and die, I chose BT for several reasons which are no longer canon but I dont care since I can ignore the retcons. Doesnt mean I cant bitch about the total 180 change they did.
>>
>>47767332
Y'know, what GW could've done is instead of retconning their numbers, they could've had the higher ups get fed-up with the BT using their loophole to legion build, and had them split into several chapters. This way you'd get canon BT successors for those who don't want to paint black, and you could give some fluff to fluffless chapters by saying that they're BT successors. Like the Red Templars and the White Templars.
>>
>>47767374
Thanks GW anon, please rape my templars some more.
>>
>>47767418
Keep /pol/ out of any board that isn't /pol/. You know the rules.

I'll admit that the retcons aren't quite nice to the Black Templar fans, but >>47767364 is a good idea that should have happened, which I feel could appease everyone involved.
>>
>>47767012
But you said that there was no fluff on this before - that it was left blank for your doods. There are thousand of loyalist spehs mareen chapters in the 41st millennium, and only like 30 mainstream gw approved chapters. If you don't like them create your own chapter. Fluff it exactly how you want it and stop complaining that other people did what they wanted to with their chapter.

On a scale from one to ork codex how quickly would this get fucked over

HQ (310 pts)
Farsight
O'r'myr

Elites (297 pts)
3x bodyguard, one with impact field, all with TL burst cannons
3x bodyguard, one with ongar, all with TL burst cannons

Troops (618 pts)
10x kroot, 10x hounds, 3x riders, shaper
10x kroot, 10x hounds, 3x riders, shaper
10x kroot, 10x hounds, 3x riders, shaper

Ethereal Council (275 pts)
Aun'shi
Aun'va
Ethereal with equalizers and recon armor

24" bubble of 10 leadership, 12" bubble of stubborn and FNP, also extra rapid fire on kroot rifles and can snap shoot after running, all units reroll failed leadership tests

Kroot and council sprint down the board firing snapshots before getting into melee with the closest thing they can find, 2x crisis teams (farsight + impact field squad, O'r'myr plus ongar gauntlet squad) deepstrike in and tie up the big units

9 S7 kroot guns should hopefully be able to deal with any flyers until they can get stuck into another unit

Hydras are awful. If you need AA, get an aegis line with a Quadgun. Put a command squad on it so it can bypass jink or reroll penetration.

Heavy weapon teams aren't great. You're better off putting your big guns on tanks. Use your infantry to wrap your vehicles, but not so tightly that your opponent can multi-charge into the vehicle at the same time.

Battle cannons. Also manticores and basilisks, if you're feeling fruity.
>>
>>47769000

Depends how you play them.

If you play them like they tend to be presented in the fluff: big mobs of Boyz, with a couple of Trukks on the flanks and some artillery and speshalists on the back lines tossing out dakka, you'll lose, and lose badly. We're a lot like Tyranids in that respect, the difference being that Nids have quite a strong monobuild (by comparison), whereas we don't.

Once upon a time we had a couple of semi-competitive builds. These by no means put us in Tier 1 territory but it let us compete in Tier 2. They were:

>Zhardsnak + Bikers + Tankbustas in trukks

Big deathstar of Zhard, Bikers, painboy on bike. Couple of minimum size units of Bikers to claim objectives, since Zhard makes them Troops. Tankbustas roared around picking off stuff like Knights.

FAQ took this strategy and smashed it HARD. Tankbustas dropped down massively in usefulness now that the entire mob gets to make 1 grenade attack in close combat. Zhard + Bikes however remains our more competitive option. Try Meganobz in Trukks in place of Tankbustas.

>Green Tide

Based around a single formation that shoved 100+ Boyz together. Great for hiding up to 10 PKs, then because they formed one unit, you could give the whole thing FNP and Fearless with single models.

It was removed when Ghazghkull's supplement was updated.

>Blitz Brigade

Used to allow Turn 1 charges, if you went 2nd.

FAQ removed this.

>You'll lose even to casual lists
This is true of all Ork lists. Doesn't change the fact that Orks are a horde army.

Boyz have mediocre stats because they're six points, T4, and A2. If you can actually get more than a handful of them into CC with most units, they'll wreck face (for the first turn at least).

Green Tide got yanked because it a silly formation and was super game-y. It is a shame that they failed to replace it with a different, better horde formation, but, like Chaos Space Marines, the problems with the Ork codex can't really be solved solely with some formations. The codex needs more options, less retarded pricing, and fewer rules that hurt the army.

Bolt weapons can Hamper a guard players Light and fast units. If a guard player is smart. they will move squads around quickly with vehicles.
or bombard you from affar with Basilisks etc.
Scions are almost on par with marines. i say Almost.
And they generally carry things that hurt marines more, Much faster.

Avoid engaging Support sections or Heavy weapons/Vehicle Supported units. without bringing a force that can counter it to bear.
Fight smart essentially.

>>
>>47764395
I'm a Dark Angels player, and while I prefer this codex to the previous one, it's not something I'd recommend buying into.

GW broke our signature playstyle. Deathwing just don't work properly, because Terminators are underpowered across the board. So, while the Ravenwing are really strong, it's like playing with half an army. It's just not as fun when the tough, scary wing isn't as tough or scary as the scout wing.

Go White Scars. They're better integrated into the rest of their army.

>>

Tacticals are decent, but there aren't many lists that really use them as a core piece. They're generally just objective holders that sometimes do something nice with a Melta or Plasma Gun.

>>47769299
once you go black, your wallet never goes back.
>>
>>47769299
the thing is, tac squads are garbage but you still need them. If you are playing space marines you are kind of stuck with them.

Crusader squads are better than tac squads cause they can take more doods, and are good for close combat.
>>
>>47769306
>Mass infiltrating Raptor Tactical Squads with Grav Weaponry can be pretty brutal.
I don't know, that sounds kind of cheesy. Maybe I'll be better off just playing Imps, though collecting will be much slower because GW are a bunch of jews.
>>
>>47769305
no they are not.

they are a bunch of sissy slapfighters, they are all offense and have absolutely no offense.

They are stuck with a single heavy weapons choice which is like a fucking boat anchor, you can't use it to fire at vehicles without making the rest of the squad useless and you can't shoot at infantry unless you're standing still.

They get one special weapons choice and one combi weapon, so unless they are firing out of a firing port in a rhino they are stuck with a either a single close range assault weapon or a grav/plas rifle that does nothing on its own.

Even fucking guard vets can take 3 special weapons
>>
>>47769318
Grav Weapons are what makes it brutal. Magnetize them so that you can bring Plasma and Melta stuff for the non-cheese games.

Grav is the bedrock upon which competitive marine lists rest.
>>
>>47769348
Grav is OP garbage on nearly the same level as wraithguard

You can have a Space Marine Chapter that believes anything. Call them the Redeemers and say they view Gene Seeding abhumans as saving them with the Emperors purifying science, or have an abhuman planet become a recuiting ground for a fleet-based chapter due to some heroic act etc. I'm sure the Iron Hands would give it a go. Flesh is just inferior material anyway.

As for whether the process would work, it does on Space Wolves and they're all mutants. It works on psykers.
If the chance of success is low, just say they take on more people.

Or just do it the other way around and say that due to gene seed mutation, your chapter grows cat ears.

He either uses the Green Tide or a Bike Heavy army supported by some Mek Guns and some MANz with Ghaz in a Battlewagon.

Didn't really look through it myself since I don't actually play the army though.

He's already using some of the best stuff in the GW codex, DESU. The only major difference in using my codex would be Nob Bikers aren't overcosted out the ass. Also, +2 Initiative for one turn on the charge if they pass a LD test.

oh, hey man. Love the codex.

Played a game this weekend. Opponent was fine with me running it.

And then, all of a sudden he got super salty when I pointed out that my warboss had a powa choppa.

"Whoa, what do you mean he as a power weapon? How come he has a power weapon?"

Keeping in mind that I was still losing models left and right and pointwise he was still winning. His sodium levels were elevated for the rest of the match.

Hey, I'm thinking of starting up a GorkaMorka campaign at my FLGS. Do you guys have any useful house rules or tips that I might need?

I also have a question about Dust Rats. In their rule book it states: : "As a result, you cannont have any Kustom Jobs or Gubbins fitted to your weapons and vehicles or buy anything from the Equipment List until you return from your first mission..." Does this mean that a starting mob of Dust Rats can only be equipped with knives when they start, or are they at least allowed things like basic carbines?

I could suggest a few house rules for rebel grots, but if you're not using them there's no point.

Dust rat rules aren't perfect, from the writer himself:
>They could do with a bit of a polish and there's some corrections to be made. Oh and the new template would be good too. Perhaps a project for this summer :)

I'd suggest you talk it over with whoever you're playing it with and allow them to be equipped with a more basic list of weapons, so only carbines/shotguns and h2h weapons at the start. It only makes sense.

Earthshaker platforms don't exist for Renegades anymore. (the old 10/10/10 dirt cheap turret)

However, Earthshaker Carriages (the super expensive kit that every proxxies with WW2 Long Toms anyway) do, and they're fucking awesome. You're looking at a T7, 3+, 3 wound model that you can hide behind things and blow the shit out of anyone who comes near. Most Renegade players take them, and many of the lists that included Renegades in big tournies had them. They're an excellent investment.
>>
>>47771528
All their tanks are BS4 and they got a tank commander HQ who boosts the Predator up to BS5 and it will not die. They also have something called an "Anvil Strike Force" and I know for a fact there are a lot of ways to get the ability to ignore crew shaken and stunned results. Bad news is you get less armor and your commander can't hide behind a guardian tank.

But otherwise I think a Space Marine tank force might be better for points than an IG one. For example, an all-las predator is 140 points, but a vindicator fulfilling the same role with a vanquisher cannon and lascannon is 145, and the vanquisher is less likely to take hull points due to BS3. The part about less armor is also rendered moot against many new enemies and the eldar's "Fuck you, all my AT is lance or D-weapons" armor mitigation.

yeah, I used to joke that when I played orks, all I was really doing was putting my models on the table then picking them up again.

2 hammerheads at 1000 points is a little over the top

you could drop one of them, the gun drones and a pirhana, add 2x squads of stealth suits (2 cannon 1 FB), those with the ghostkeel make up the OSC formation which is batshit against enemy armor (always hits the back armor, +1BS)

Give your commander dual fusion, he could also make use of iridium armor
The crisis suits don't need gun drones, give them shield drones instead
Hammerheads enjoy having gun drones rather than anything else due how nonsense the games vehicle shooting mechanics are right now
Piranhas really need a fusion blaster on them to be worth a damn

You need to check your local meta for when they use fliers. Normally you don't see any a low points games, save FMC. Just don't play if your opponent has more than 1 of these at 1k points.
>>
>>47772524
Ignore that anon, do NOT turn up at your local store for your first ever game with an optimised stealth cadre in your army. Your locals will almost certainly assume you're just another WAAC netlisting tau cunt as soon as they see you put that on the table. Your list in >>47772185 was interesting, original, and unlikely to provoke any tau hate, go with that.
>>
>>47772524
you have points left over to do either, maybe free up some extra points and go ion cannon + longstrike for amusing overwatch and BS5?

>>47772590
>The crisis suits don't need gun drones, give them shield drones instead

he doesnt really need the shield drones either unless he's going to get stuck in with dual fusion, but there isnt much need for fusion when he already has a hammerhead and a ghostkeel

Old guy back again asking about the Wulfen Story. As a space wolf player which of these start the story? I can find them on the Black Library site but am unsure where to start.

Legacy of Caliban - Ravenwing, Master of Sanctity and The Unforgiven, plus the anthology Lords of Caliban, which consists of the short stories Honour of the Third, A Hunt in the Dark, Battle-Brothers, Accept No Failure, Holder of the Keys and All Must End.

Honour of the Third by Gav Thorpe
Battle Brothers by Gav Thorpe
Deathwing by William King & Bryan Ansell

>>
>>47772663
What's so terrible about those? Crisis suits are a core part of tau, you should expect to see them, and three without a buffmander isn't horrific to face. Hammerheads and piranhas don't generally turn up in the power lists. Yes, the ghostkeel is tough, but bringing one Big Toy at 1000 points is pretty common whatever army you play.

The OSC on the other hand is widely considered to be absolute bullshit. A new player turning up with one is going to make a seriously bad first impression.

I can't help you with which books are a part of the series you're trying to read, but I'm guessing you're getting a bunch of .mobi and .epub files. Those are both book files, that require either a specific program to read them, or for you to convert the file into a kind of file your computer can already read.

For .epub files, I use Adobe Digital Editions, its a free, easy to use Epub reader that works well.

For Mobi files I honestly just convert them to epubs using Zamzar (Google Zamzar and it should be one of the first results, 4chan won't let me post the address because it thinks its spam). It will ask you to upload the file you're trying to convert, what you want to convert it to, then you'll have to enter in your E-Mail so that it will be able to send you your changed file. I usually convert .Mobi to .Epub, but it lets you choose other file extensions like .pdf if you'd like.

I hope that this helps you, if you have other questions about this please ask I'm more than happy to help out a fellow 40k enthusiast.
