I think I have a better understanding of AI Rigging now. And this is fucking stupid.

So in order to Rig, an AI would need to install itself on the RCC or on the Drone. I would say the RCC would be better, because direct install to the drone results in using the drone's generally bad device rating.

And of course any action you want to take with it involves some stat conversion.

It's incredible to me that they took something interesting and made it so miserable. I mean, even by Shadowrun standards.

I'm looking for which books talk about police procedures. I looked in Vice, but it's more general information. I looked in Lone Star but it only has descriptions of the patrols and what happens if you are arrested. What happens during the actual stop?

Say the cops see an ork walking around looking like a street tough. He probably has drugs. What is the procedure?

Hoi chummers. Could I get a bit of help with Chummer 5? Specifically, how does restricted gear work and how do I apply weapon mount visibility, etc. to a specific weapon mount? What I find particularly funny about it is that the AI section says to refer to the foundation table.. Which doesn't make a lot of sense, because then you're dependent on a device or emulated device for a skill check.

Someone in a reddit thread suggested using the astral attributes table instead for a houserule, which makes MUCH more sense.

I tried playing around with it some to see if you can attach it to specific weapon mounts, but it doesn't seem that it's able to be nested in it. Even if you do "Add location". Unfortunately, it seems it just has to be a part of the vehicle overall?

Guys, I need ideas.

My crew is preparing for a new mission, a bank job. Their job is to get into the facility, go into the the vault and steal the contents of a security box, and make enough of a mess on the place to make sure that nobody figures out that they were looking for that specific box.

Since I hope that one of the things to do is open as many boxes as their guts and greed allow, I need a few ideas of what is inside of them, they don't need to be worth money, simply things that are would be put behind all that security.
>>
>>47583023

Check ID. Ask simple questions. Find probable cause. One pats down for weapons or drugs while the other guy stands nearby but outside of range that would get him involved in the fight. (i.e, maybe about 10 feet back. Not that he'd have his gun drawn, but if the suspect starts fighting his partner, he'd be in a better position)

In more dangerous areas it would be more cops, because someone has to watch out for the gang coming to help out a member, maybe.

Hey guys, I'm new to GMing Shadowrun, and I was wondering about the importance of inter-party balance, with stuff like optimization and role-overlap.

I've played Shadowrun before (5th) in a short lived campaign, but now I'm looking at running a game (also likely 5th) and I'm concerned that my lack of experience with the crunch might mean that I'll miss issues until they become a problem.

As a specific example, it seems like spirits are really strong. If someone specs that way, will that make a Street Sam useless?

Thanks for any help/advice.

In most cases UNLESS enemy mages have ranks in banishing, at which point spirits go poof.
In general, if the party mage is being too much of a dick, just throw out enemies with banishing and counterspelling, at which point the party mage becomes useless until those enemies die.

You can summon any spirit though? Tradition just dictates what spells you can stick them to?

Or am I confused again from last thread?
>>
>>47583994
you are a little confused

each tradition is limited to the spirits listed as its combat/healing/whatever for summoning.

the spirit of that type is also limited to sustaining spells of its same category - so health spirits can only sustain health spells, and different traditions will have different types of spirit as their health spirit
>>
>>47583994
No, you can summon any of the five spirits associated with your tradition. These spirits can then cast spells associated with their roles in said tradition. You don't get to summon spirits outside of your tradition at all as far as I know.
>>
>>47583994
>You can summon any spirit though?
No. Otherwise the calling ritual to summon a specific, non-traditional spirit, would be pointless.

>He says he uses her as a stress-relief punching bag.
>Asks if I want a turn.
>I shoot him on principle, and then shoot him three more times.

Actually finishing the run after that required a ton of extra legwork and a lot of bribes, not to mention our pay getting cut for the extra dead body. Getting the girl to someone who could look after her while we figured out who the hell she was also required burning a bridge or two (which didn't pan out anyway) and after we got her a new life with some on-the-level friends of ours, we never saw her again anyway. Looking back on it, it probably wasn't worth it in the long run. It probably wasn't even worth it at the time. But damn it, I wrote "I've got principles" on my character sheet and I fucking meant it.

Nah, you summon spirit types dictated by your tradition. So, for example, Hermetics summon fire spirits for when they need something set on fire.

It being the right thing to do is the only reason we didn't bomb the run out of hand. That we didn't pariah ourselves from our Johnson's entire social circle or bring the wrath of the Yaks down on us is why I consider it a case of "getting away" with something.

It's a social kind of thing. Like, you know the guy's carrying, the guy knows you're carrying, but neither of you want to say anything about it because then you'll have to confirm that you're both carrying and suddenly what's supposed to be a simple deal for a high-grade meat puppet in exchange for a handful of deadbeat clients turns into everyone worrying about whether or not someone's going to get shot.

Not investing in better business-casual body armor, though, was totally his fault.

Oh, okay. Hello!
Well, there is an Egypt tradition pre-made. It's in Shadow Spells, along with the Norse tradition. I'm assuming 5th edition, but they're both somewhere in 4th, too.
So yeah, go look at those, and then look at the mentor spirits and choose one that you feel is appropriate if you want.

Dicepools need to be between 10 to 15+ on your "main thing".
Splitting dicepools are not that great on this system unless you get really lucky, since most boost only apply to the total dicepool and not each individual throw. So you end up throwing down 4 dice against 5/6 on average, and at that rate you will barely hurt them.

The most simple for a newcomer is to stay away from hacking/technomancer/rigging and spirits. Adepts, "caster" magicians and sammys are easy to pick up and the first two don't require a lot of minmaxing to be effective.

Try to find out what are making the rest of the party, because it's more important you all cover eachother holes. Also, try to have a shared background with one or two players so you don't all meet up in a bar as strangers. Even "we worked before once or twice" is a big deal because gives you a bit of IC trust.

Negotiation, etiquette, perception, a melee and a ranged skill are a must no matter your role, at least a few points. Most importantly, make your character memorable in some way, give him a personality, and care a bit less on making him a murderhobo and more of someone who chose the Shadows and has a reason, even if that reason is making money to not die on the streets.
>>
Question for those who know more about this game:

Aspected magicians, are they worth it? I read that they are the most common type of magician in-universe but seeing as they lose the astral ability and are limited otherwise so I am wondering if making one of them is worth the trouble.

For Dice pools: 6 is competent, 8 is good 10 is excellent

For Nartaki: Mechanically, every hand but one counts as and off hand, so you take a -2 for each you use a weapon with (so max -6 with 4 weapons, splitting dice 4 ways). I believe you can take ambidextrous multiple times for each hand though, 3 times max. Recoil would be a bitch though.

>>47586253

Skills you should always take include

Perception
A melee range combat skill:this should generally be unarmed combat or clubs
A Firearm Skill(automatics are good, pistols also covers tasers and are more concealable)
Con/Etiquette
Computers
First Aid, or someone else in the party should have it

Skills that are useful to have:

Sneaking/Stealth
Swim
Disguise
Survival
Gymnastics

Honorable mention Survival

Skill groups:

Athletics
Electronics
Stealth
Influence

honorable mention Acting

Pilot Origins doesn't do that, it gives you the benefits of a control rig while jumped into a specific category of vehicle. It's for jumping in, not being a drone rigger. You're able to use autosofts as though they're skills, but that doesn't carry over to any drones you're issuing orders to.
>>47584291
As far as dicepools go, I generally recommend you try for 12-16 at the thing you do best at, but ask your GM what everyone else is like. If the other combat guy is throwing 8 dice and you've got 20, you're going to throw the game balance out of whack and make the fun of the game go away.
>>47586425
Aspected magicians in 5th are absolutely terrible. They cost way too much for what they can do in priority, and the price gap in karmagen isn't high enough to justify not just taking Spirit Bane or a geas as a negative quality to scrape in the karma for becoming a full magician.
>>
>>47585775

>>
>>47586425

They are useful for three things, low power games, very specific builds, and if when you make your first shadowrun character, to not feel tempted to spread out too thin.

The two schools you can use with it are Sorcery (Spellcasting in general) or Conjuring (Dealing with spirits). Enchanting is really good, but it's not a good PC specialization, because you end up with a lot of limits on what you can do, lose versatility mid-run (an important thing to have) and most of the enchantments are crazy expensive in drain.

They are not bad, and if you are using Priority and want to spend a few less points and get a cheaper mage they are good, just know your limits.

But, don't forget something, runners are the "best of the best" so to speak. You are the only people of doing this kind of jobs without any real backup from a corp or goverment, so the average shadowrunner decker/mage is a couple of times better than you corp slave of the same kind. After all, the only way to keep living on the shadows is to be the best.

so stat+skill+mods in double digit is solid. for guns, 5 agility +5 skill +2 spec +2 smartgun gets you to 14, and that's not capping anything

Also looking at maxing out Edge, but that seems to go against splitting pools as well. the oomph of adding 6 dice to an attack is somewhat lost when that gets spread around.

I'm thinking I'll go elf w/ maxed agility and edge, and focus on putting solid shots into whatever is downrange.

Although, I did just learn that we're not restricted on gear selection at game start. Only thing we can't get is cultured bioware, for some reason. Nartaki+4 laser pistols could be a fun combo. No recoil, and shears through armor

To get services from another kind of spirit, you have to be present when the spirit's banished and then successfully make a Mag+Summoning roll versus their Force before they fully disappear.

So you basically need to have a plan (and probably spend edge) or have a partner.

I want to play a Christian Theurge. Anyone have any experience with them? How do they fare on the "scale," of traditions?

For what it's worth, I'm playing a character who's also going to "back-up sam," because he doesn't want to be immediately identified as the group theurge and draw a ton of aggro. So he's going to look and act like a sam, pack heat like a sam on-mission, and try to avoid revealing his nature unless the group needs magic support.

Is it possible to get shades or other glasses that give you the same effect of advanced cybereyes?

Keep in mind that you can probably take some or any of the core totems/mentors and rename them to fit better with the Egyptian paradigm.

And while >>47586541 there are actual totems/mentors that are insects without being the Bugs. But lots of people would probably shoot first, so consider taking Bad Rep. You've fried enough people that you've got a bad name, but at least pretty much everyone that matters in the shadows knows that you're not a Bug.

>Pilot Origins doesn't do that

Data Trails is a hot mess, but:

Data Trails pg. 152 upper right:
>Only AIs with the Pilot Origins quality may use autosofts in place of active skills, they also use their Depth in place of the Pilot rating of vehicles/ drones they are running on.

And pg 158 upper left:
They start programming on their own and make a Software + Intuition [Mental] Test; divide 12 by the number hits on the test to get the umber of days it takes to learn (the program). AIs then spend 5 Karma to learn a regular program.

Then the Pilot Origins Quality itself:
>The AI is also capable of loading, converting, and using drone autosofts as programs

And finally pg.146 under Depth:
>AIs can learn a number of programs equal to their Depth + Essence.

Conclusion: Get depth 6, enjoy your twelve skills with a rank of 6 for 3000 nuyen/5 karma apiece and a base dicepool of 12. And Rigger 5.0 conveniently gave a lot of skillset autosofts to pick from. (And if you load your virtual ass on a powerful enough chassis, you can run a couple of those on the chassis directly on top of yourself.)

I recall mantis spirits are bug spirit hunters, but don't quote me on that.
>>
>>47587022
Insect spirits are categorized as either 'social' or 'solitary' spirits. The social category includes Ant Spirits, Termite Spirits, Wasp Spirits, Fly Spirits and Firefly Spirits. Their solitary counterparts include Roach Spirits, Cicada Spirits, Mantis Spirits, Beetle Spirits and Mosquito Spirits.
That being said, I would still avoid taking (or at the very least, be extremely covert about having) a mentor spirit that manifested itself as anything remotely insectoid. Most people just know that magic bugs = bad and start shooting, they don't know the intricacies of the spirits themselves. And yes, that would include arachnids, I don't think the average corp sec would make a distinction between them.

As CHA-based tradition it works best with summoners. Being summoner helps you avoid unwanted attention since nobody can tell who commands spirit without accencing test.

Now I don't know a big huggy bunch about ancient Egyptian religion and magic practice (my old world knoweldge is mostly late Greece and Rome), but here's a few I can think of.

Bear isn't a great fit for a scarab or beetle, but as a protector type, it does work. Peacemaker or a healing-type mentor easily slots in for one possible scarab mentor. The other one being another guardian type.

Flies could get Mountain or other enduring type totem.

... Probably Great Mother as Bee? Like I said, not something I know a lot about, but that's what I got with what I do know and some quick, quick searching.
>>
>>47587060

While you probably wanted a gun anyway (because no-gun either means high-value extraction target or mage and the second one means kill fast), put a few more points in.

Smartgun in the gun, smartlink in glasses, goggles or headgear. Get a powerful gun, take advantage of the better aim action a smartgun gives you, and use it if you don't think you'll have a few actions to clean up any astral signature you're going to leave casting spells.

Oh, and use bursts as much as possible.
>>
>>47587107
That's true, but I was more using corpsec as slang for 'extras with guns and shit'. As a runner, you probably shouldn't be shooting up every place you go to that has security personnel. Hence the need for a degree of secrecy.
>>47587115

>>
>>47587160

I would recommend going then health spells (for buffing up people), longarms (for shotguns and snipers) and pistols. Choose a melee of your taste.

With longarms you become the supporting member, since you can scope with snipers, rush in with shotties, panic summon an angel, machine pistols for supressing, recovery for the meat shields and buffs for the less combative.
>>
>>47587160
Ah, then you definitely want a smartgun system. It's +2 accuracy and the smartgun aim bonus.

So don't worry about low accuracy in that case, just keep in mind that most of the auto-fire capable shotguns are F rated.

But in that case, if you have some spare skill points, put 'em in Automatics and get a machine pistol. If not, try substituting using your longarms skill, or just scare up two karma if your GM is going to be a complete ass about that. Eventually nine if they're actually that much of a pain.

Don't draw it unless somebody's being a super-dodgy pain, and aim+autofire. Stick-n-Shock ammo for it.

Nothing says fun times and hijinks than having your driver ram full speed into thing to start a mission off.

The infiltrator's work can be done by the Face/Decker/Mage pooling their specialities to do recon. On top of liberating info from NPC's by charming them, the Face can get you more money from Mr. Johnson or any goods you acquire, find you rare gear and/or make you pay less for it.

He didn't talk to the group, only with nods and shit, and he owned a lot of cars. Like A LOT of cars. It was really to a point that he spent time getting his cars into positions for nearly anything that could go wrong/right. And he'd always be ready with a get away car or van and drive that thing like he was straight out of Initial D.

The task at hand is very easy to sneak into but it looks like they didn't want to go about it that way. No one got silencers I think the mage forgot he has concealment and they spent 90k on a sports car that has no armor and just goes faster then normal. I will admit they did something like this in the past and got the job done but unless they do something I wasn't ready for they are in deep shit.

The only two I could think of as being useful would be some kind of snake-like body (more maneuverable than the Tank!, but less capacity. Perhaps also lets you keep non-magnified aim bonuses even with a move action) and and a two-wheeled lower body.

Even faster than the Wheeled Warrior, less capacity, takes terrain worse, and makes you easier to knock over. But it's also a good bit cheaper.

A friend on mine wants to make a street sam that's basically Mcree from Overwatch. I'm looking at the rules for multiple attacks to see if he's able to shoot a bunch of dudes in one turn. It seems like it means you can fire multiple weapons in a turn, not fire a single gun multiple times. Is that correct, or is there a way for him to split his dice pool 3 or 4 times for a single revolver or something?
>>
>>47588149
Semi-auto burst, burst, long burst and full auto fire; depending on what the weapon can do.

Although telling him to pick a mechanically more viable concept might be easier on him.
>>
>>47588149
If he fires a semi auto burst (3 rounds) or a long burst fire burst (two 3 rounds bursts), then he can split two or three ways.

It's not a good choice without a really large pool of dice.
>>
>>47588195
Yeah I told him that he'd be rolling really small sets of dice if he split it like that. It'd probably be best to have a crapton of initiative and go multiple times in a round.
>>
>>47588205
This is probably the best way to go about it. A single round is only 3 seconds long, so if you can get 4+ init passes per round you'll be able to clear a room of baddies before the first one hits the floor.

In Imago Dei is the official stance of the Catholic Church on magic, and the Awakening in general (it was written in 2024).
>All metahumans have souls, not just humans. I don't know if they've made official statements about non-metahuman sapients like naga, shifters, etc.
>Magic is not inherently evil, and neither are spirits (they are manifestations of nature). However, conjuring cannot be done by non-clergy, and even then they require explicit permission from Rome. Banishing and exorcism, on the other hand, totally cool with that, and it's in character.

There's also the Order of St. Sylvester, which is the magic arm of the Catholic Church. If you show magical potential (and were a baptised and attending member of the church when you Awakened) they're the ones who probably approached you, taught you how to use magic beneficially, and encouraged you to join their order to help Mother Church.

A few militant orders, like the Order of Saint George (monk and lay adepts), the Order of Saint Michael (non-magical militia, usually seen in countries where there's no strong law enforcement), and the Order of Mary Magdalene (all nuns, all adepts, all virtuous, all asskicking all the time)

Good luck trying to stalk an Awakened killer with an inhuman mind as it hunts other inhuman Awakened killers. Plus, it's unlikely that they'd go for the hive directly; predators prefer to pick off isolated and weak prey, not run right to where the prey is strongest.

Also, never forget that 'solitary' is a matter of perspective. Instead of a hive of dozens of fleshforms, Mantids work in family groups with 10 or more members, multiple Mother Spirits, and possibly multiple shamans.

Namely, that the latter can turn any of their basilicas in any nation in the world into extraterritorial property, if they follow procedure, and they can make their priests citizens of VC and thus protected from regular authorities. Also, their military is definitely larger than the hundred-odd guys it employs now to keep the tourists in line.

The wording in the old sourcebooks are unclear. Every citizen of the UCAS got a SIN, and people who were ineligible for a SIN but still lived in the UCAS became 'probationary citizens'. Getting a full SIN if you were a probationary citizen might require an act of Congress, as Dunks did, or it might not, and he required special clearance due to not being a metahuman. Certainly you can get a SIN through immigration, though it's debatable whether or not you'd need a SIN from another country/corp before you could even start that very long and difficult process.

Sensors Ratings apply to limits, the amount of dice the sensor rolls, and (for cameras and microphones) how many add-ons a sensor function can use. In an Sensor Array you can have up to 8 sensor functions at once, the rating of the array does not factor into how many sensors can fit into the array.

There was a lot of talk about that very scenario back when Dunkelzahn's Will first came out. Don't know if anything official happened with it.

Also, the Draco Foundation is a AA corporation, they can issue SINs in their own name. Even if Dunkelzahn wanted to issue UCAS SINs, he couldn't- 12 hour presidencies don't enable you to leave citizenship rights to random people in your will.

Even if Haeffner wanted to, that's still likely outside the jurisdiction of the President of the UCAS.

The most a US president can do is grant honorary citzenship, which has only happened 8 times in USA history, still needed Congressional approval, and most importantly doesn't actually do anything, legally speaking- no one has really tried it's limits, but it doesn't allow you to have a US passport.

You need to be naturalized as a citizen, which is handled by Citizenship and Immigration Services in the USA and Citizenship and Immigration Canada in... Canada. In either case, it's not a right bestowed to the Executive Office, because that would be a massive overreach of their authority. Given how the UCAS has tightened up citizenship restrictions on things like jus soli citizenship, it's unlikely that they'd hand over that measure of power to the President. Especially when the UCAS was born in a very turbulent time where the lines between who did and did not count as citizens of this new, very vulnerable country, and even who did and did not count as a person, were very much in question. If making people citizens was an executive power, I suspect that the SINless situation would be much less severe.
>>
>>47593415
Well, I figured since Haeffner is the president he would have congressional/senatorial support for some legal shenanigans, though you make a good point. Though, given the divergent point in history and how far into the "future" it takes place, I wonder how similar the constitution of UCAS is, in general.

The UCAS constitution is basically the American constitution, minus a few liberties and the electoral college. Coming up with an actual syncretic answer to what a union between America and Canada would be is too hard, better to just have Canada fold and immediately surrender all autonomy and nationalism, while the UCAS continues to be the USA with a couple dents to make it more cyberpunk, and no change at all in general political views or opinions when the South rose again. Here's the appropriate section, from the Neo-Anarchist Guide to North America
>We, the people of the United States of America and the Dominion of Canada, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, restore domestic tranquillity, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and procure the blessings of liberty and security for ourselves and our posterity, in spite of all enemies foreign and domestic, and the travails of our two nations, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United Canadian and American States.
>So goes the preamble of the UCAS Constitution. Though similar to the old U.S. Constitution, its differences are telling enough to reveal the terrifying social disorders that gave birth to the Act of Union and the establishment of the UCAS.
>Many amendments to the U.S. Constitution were incorporated into the body of the UCAS document. Deadwood was eliminated, including the 18th and 21st Amendments (Prohibition and its repeal).
>The president and vice president are elected to four year terms, but by a simple majority of the popular ballot. The UCAS has no electoral college. There is also no limit on the number of terms a president may serve.

>The UCAS legislative branch is constituted much as it was under the U. S. Constitution, with a Senate and House of Representatives. Each state, and Seattle, elects two senators to six-year terms. Representatives are elected by districts of approximately 50,000 full citizens, with districts reapportioned based on a census held every ten years. >Neither probationary citizens nor out-and-out SINIess inhabitants count toward congressional districts, and they cannot vote.
>The federal judiciary is structured exactly as it was in the U.S., and U.S. Supreme Court decisions are considered binding precedents in UCAS law.
>The UCAS can suspend habeas corpus and various other civil rights in time of war, insurrection, or declared national emergency. Over the past two decades, various regions of the country have been declared in a state of emergency for periods of up to two years.
>The first ten amendments of the U. S. Constitution exist unchanged in the UCAS Constitution, and are still referred to as the Bill of Rights. Much of their effectiveness has been weakened by recent Supreme Court decisions, however.
>Other amendments to the UCAS Constitution include:
• 11th Amendment—The rights of UCAS citizenship, by birth or naturalization, are not to be denied to any individual due to race or creed.
• 12th and 15th Amendments—Expanded powers to state and local (i.e., Metroplex) governments. The central power of the UCAS government is greatly reduced.
• 13th Amendment—UCAS recognizes contracts between corporations and their employees as binding. Upon due process of law in a Contract Court, corporations may extradite persons found guilty of unlawfully breaking their employment contract.

• 14th Amendment—The so-called "SIN Amendment," ratified in 2036, established the System Identification Number, requiring the registration of every UCAS citizen. Individuals residing in the UCAS without SINs are defined as "probationary citizens," with sharply limited civil rights. Probationary citizens are not permitted to vote in federal elections. Species other than Homo sapiens are eligible for probationary citizenship in UCAS, but full citizenship may be granted to a non-human/nonmetahuman only by act of Congress.

I was on my way to a set up for a concert, and I thought, "man, riggers are nuts".

Then I wondered if a shadowrun rigger could work as a rigger, and thus be an expert at all things to do with cables, harnesses, climbing and working at altitude and off the side of kinda rickety structures, even in baking heat or pouring rain. Because dwarves are boring in Shadowrun. They're just short humans, who explicitly don't have some sort of racial superiority complex or need to gather together/get involved politically. They just quietly work and get along with human society, occasionally the fluff mentions dwarves preferring to work with other dwarves, then says that there's no dwarf conspiracy worth mentioning.

I assume they would have no way to directly interface, seeing as the only way for them to actually interact with meatspace would be to be on a drone, and anthropomorphic drones are specifically missing from the "Pilot Origins" (That they also can't take, because of exceptional entity). So.. they just sit on a device or comlink and then act as the groups' face via matrix interactions, and that's their only role?

Yeah they could have job for their premium lay low fake SIN. Rigger Rigger would have to have proper skills to go with his profession as cables, harnesses and shit is a skill that can be used.

I've had jobs for every runner I have played. One Elf Sammy was very good house painter and renovater and he did freelance gigs for his mate (who was also his informant and fence). At campaigns end he retired from running and started his own successful renovating business.

Another Elf, who was rigger used his knowledge in chemicals and medicine to open his own pharmacy/doctors place/organ legging business. He did jobs as call doctor and a lot of charity work in Redmond Barrens. He spent his freetime to try to make his homeplace better to live in. In Elf Sammys campaign he had managed to do so by rising into pillar of community and by chopping all hoodlums to pieces and selling them away. He never got away from his serial killing past.

Tell me about it, I swear 90% of us are cash in hand or the electronic equivalent.
And the fact that they'll take anyone (though not for actual rigger work as far as I know) - actually the reason it popped into my head, a dude who I know frequents /srg/ was originally going to be working on the job with me today, but something came up - he's done exactly one gig before, also through me:
The recruitment process feels very street-level runner, a friend asks if you can work, you get a few through calls through them (and pay through them), then you get work yourself, then you get asked if any of your friends can work, and none of it is above board.
And odds are at least a few guys are on drugs.

I know what you mean about recruitment though. I got into rigging through an events production job and my first calls were all friends texting me and asking if I was free X date to rig. >"See officer, I'm just a rigger, working down at the gig that's on tomorrow. All this webbing, helmet and pouches? Just safety gear officer, you don't want to know how stingy the boss is"

I think, in theory, we're all meant to be some variation of self employed, and some of the guys who do it more full time actually are (some really really aren't), though the gigs themselves are legit as fuck.
As in Hans Zimmer, Bruce Springsteen, Fleetwood Mac, Taylor Swift.
I just get deposits in my account, and say nothing - though I'm still well below the minimum tax band

As for drugs, I've seen members of the tour crew ask local crew for drugs on the in, and be given them on the out. Smoking at work is okay if outside, and I would not be surprised if all those cigs were not just baccy.

I wonder what fun things you could do with a drone with unusual lift capacity...

Shit, "just an honest rigger, this is all safety gear" would be a great cover story. Hell, there's been times where I've debated buying surplus webbing sets to wear while I rig. I didn't, because I'd look like a tool, but you could totally pass that shit by a cop.

I was on a gig a few days ago in an indoor theatre where the sound guy for the act asked if the smoke detector in the booth would go off if he smoked a blunt. When the lead techs on the show's side are getting high it really sets the tone.

I'm constantly amazed at how questionable event crews are and how legit the acts themselves turn out. A bunch of meth head looking dudes setting up Avenged Sevenfold? To me there was no noticeable difference in the set up operation for Bette Midler and the one for the WWE, they're the same where the crew is concerned, save for the amount of crap.

Also the crew ALWAYS looks sketchy (and usually ugly) as fuck - I'd imagine the equivalent events would have a lot of trolls and orcs on the staff
>>
>>47596484
I feel like most physical labour jobs in the sixth world would want orcs and trolls. They're generally stronger than the other metatypes, so they'd be better at moving shit around. And now I'm imagining unstacking motor cases with a troll helping, or more accuratly just watching the troll do it because he doesn't need my help. That would be glorious.

You done fucked up. I love when you think you've got something heavy like that and it turns out the case is empty though. Best feeling.

Clearly orcs would unpack the truck and trolls would get it onstage. And the elves would rig, and never lift a finger to help anybody else.

Do riggers around you help with stagehand stuff one they've finished hanging everything, or are they done once it's all in the air? Because around here riggers don't touch it unless its going up. Some guys I rigged with bitched up a storm when they had us set up a collapsible tent to cover the sides of the stage.
>>
What is Response & Signal? It's on my chummer for this AI character, but I can't actually find it in Data trails.
>>
>>47596700
Generally riggers are up on the rafters/towers all the time, but I can't say I check that much - there's probably times when they're just doing nothing, but on the other hand they have to be up top first to chain up the motors and things to pull the rest of the shit up, and they're climbing shit and riding beams so I can't say I'd swap

At least people listened when I said "imma need a hand with this", and then I got a few "fuck that WAS heavy"'s from the guys who helped on the ramp, seeing as I pushed it fine TO the ramp.

I think my least favourite shit has to be the thick cables - a fat-ass transformer you can just push, but you have to coil that shit, and then move the really heavy cable trunks - not to mention it being filthy, your hands get black from the rubber really fast (...and as today was baking hot in an open stadium I now have glove tan lines - pale white hands, lobster red forearms)
>>
>>47596900
I know exactly what you're talking about with those cables. Those things are fucking murder. I was coiling 100 foot lengths of that with a buddy one time. One of us would pull in slack, one of us actually coiled. We two manned it into it's box.

I'm always a little impressed at how willing the crews are to jump when somebody says jump. For how they seem they do work pretty well when it comes down to it. I've worked event production for a college and those kids are awful. Most of them you need to ride their ass constantly or they start slacking off when you're not looking.

>Also, didn't the azzies start the war? I can't remember one way or the other.

I couldn't remember either, so I'm reading through War! now.

Seems like they maintained a bloody peace (guerrilla groups raiding Aztlan and Aztech sites, that sort of thing) for decades before 2073, but stuff like SURGE (feared to be a biological agent) and Ghostwalker throwing them out of Denver led the Azzies to try and tighten their grip on nominally independent Bogata (which was really Aztlan fighting proxy Amazonians), specifically by seeding the forest with Sangre Del Diablo trees.

Tensions flared, were reduced a bit by Crash 2.0, then BAD came along. Aztechnology went to the Corporate Court and asked for permission to attack the cartels and stop the tempo menace, which was granted. The Azzies used this as permission to blast the cartels, along with Amazonian guerrilla safehouses and Bogatan independence agitators. Their attempt to wall off parts of Bogata stirred up the local opposition, who delayed the construction with terror attacks.

Aztlan realised that this bleeding ulcer could not be dealt unless they had open war with Amazonia, the one backing the independents and guerrillas, and that the CC and UN were dragging their feet about addressing these very valid claims because it's Eco-Darling vs. Blood Sacrificing Aztecs. So they 'leaked' rumours that the Azzies were making planning a massive biological warfare offensive, using genemod insects to spread Azzie diseases across the rainforest. Amazonia sent troops into the Aztech facility behind the work, but oops, no bioweapons, it's medical research. So the Azzies got their justified war.

So, like most real wars, it's not really any one side's fault. Amazonia gave casus belli, manipulated into doing it by the Azzies, who did it because Amazonia was supporting terrorists, who were countering Aztlan territorial expansion, etc.

I was thinking of putting my players through a kind of Last of Us scenairo, where they're having to escort someone through the barrens and a decent chunk of the country in order to deliver her to the mark, with an insane payoff of nuyen (like 900,000) and possibly some bioware.

I guess my question is: how much of the former states are like the barrens? Would this system and lore work for that kind of abandoned feel and ghoul-centric combat with the occasional group of bandits, or are the barrens the minority in regards to the country, and it's mostly civilized like Seattle.

Question two: how would I go about keeping vehicle use to a minimum? Are the major freeways lined with security in lore? Would that serve as a good excuse to force them to limit their travels to mostly footwork?
>>
>>47597993
A lot of the rural and suburban areas in the former United States are underpopulated and filled with ghost communities and towns. Insert ghost town/neighborhood filled with bugs or feral ghouls. However, remember that you are dealing with NAN, UCAS, and other nations, so border crossings will be a thing. Maybe the target your runners have to escort has some giveaway marker that makes getting across the border (semi)-legally nearly impossible. That way you guys have to go rural.

Ghouls are a lot less likely to be encountered than critters, if you're going cross-country. Plenty of those out there in the woods.

As for travelling, if they have a decent grasp of the lore or current criminal procedure for smuggling goods and people around, they'll look for a coyote to take them across borders and through the dangerous, uncharted wilds. Have the coyote get geeked by something fast and hungry when they are vulnerable (for example, they left the car, climbed down a cliff, and walked a ways to reach a second hidden vehicle with Salish plates, the coyote gets dropped on by a martichoras, now the party is alone with no idea where the next vehicle is, and only a compass heading to point to their destination).

>>
>>47598522
That's not what's needed; the 5e D&D playtest was a waste of our time that led to pointless arguments between fans while the devs pushed out 3.75. The public aspects pointed out some flaws in the rules, but by and large those weren't addressed (I think the Everlasting Moon Druid is still viable).

CGL needs to clean out all the bullshit management that supported Loren during his embezzlement and stop leaning on semi-competent freelancers that work for cheap. Get some real, professional writers in there -keep a freelancer or two who do good work, but actually give them consistent work to do- and hire a good suite of editors. CGL needs a developmental editor in chief, a layout editor, a copy editor, and for the love of God a proofreader and beta reader.

Also, get an internal fileshare system and actually try and assemble every rule in the game. Someone needs to read through that with every book and see where the obvious holes in the system, and pieces that don't interact with each other but obviously will need to do so (like drones and cyberware, AI and devices, vehicle speeds and reality) and fill those holes. The Superbook is a demonstration of how you can boil out all the fluff and just have the rules skeleton, and it simply doesn't make sense.

It's weird, but CGL (well, ImMediaRes and by extension CGL) is the only game studio that I actively want to be stripped of it's licenses and shut down. The end of 4th was a mess (War! being the go-to for mechanics and fluff written without thinking or editing), and with the Coleman theft and failure to pay employees, it seemed like it was all but inevitable that Topps would take back control and let the game end around 2010, or at least enter a holding period.

But no, they just kept right on going. They lost control of some IP (Cthulhlutech and Eclipse Phase being most notable), but somehow CGL kept SR and Battletech, and Coleman kept CGL. I still have no idea how that happened- CGL put out a press release saying that they knew Coleman had stolen the money, but that it was probably an accident and they'll work it out. Everyone knew writers were fleeing because they weren't getting paid, but somehow more people showed up to write for them. They didn't have money to pay printers or shippers, and allegedly the wife of one of the editors was doing shipping for them by hand, but somehow books were still commissioned and ended up going out. Topps must have known about these shenanigans, but either CGL had an iron contract where they could keep the IP even if all they published was dogshit on a page every 6 months, or Topps just didn't care.

I don't think it's too much for a company to do. "Writing a working rulebook" is literally the base level of competence for an RPG company. You've got people crawling out of the walls to start their own RPG companies so they can get their ideas out there, and the books written by rank amateurs are still somehow better than CGL. I know there's editors out there who would love to get their hands on SR and make something of it, but nobody with sense wants to work for Coleman.

I mean the depth of the restructuring that you were suggesting. Specifically because it's such an "old house", to do that level of cleaning just isn't going to work. Especially if it survived the bullshit you're saying here (I wasn't aware). However just burning it all down and handing over the license to someone new is something I can get behind, if we can find an appropriate group. It's a shame that tabletop gaming doesn't have someone like Notch who could just buy it and do that kind of shit for fun (and profit.)

I'm not sure what the solution is. I want to get my Magic/Cyberpunk fix with decent mechanics - as I am learning SR5, the editing is bad but the mechanics and balance seem mostly salvageable - but I'm not sure where to go or what to learn. Guns are a hard thing to do right tabletop systems, for example, and Shadowrun seems to have at least hit that mark.

In the 2D Storytime, the black magic tradition guy had his manifest as Slender Man. If you were playing something else that had a Man spirit, it would fit that theme. Norse (I don't know if they have Man, but work with me)? A viking, probably. Or a jarl or druidic-looking motherfucker. Hermetic? Probably a scientist or Dumbledore or something. If my theurge I'm making had access to Man, it'd likely look like a crusader or some other kind of knight.
>>
>>47599959
Depends on the tradition and individual spirit, but they can be anything from a spooky ghost to an animated piece of furniture or a tool to a domestic animal that is commonly associated with metahumans (Cats, dogs, cows, whatever.)
Doesn't matter if it's pretending to be your great-great-great-great grandfather or a broomstick, it's a Spirit of Man.

Spirits manifest however according to the tradition. So a Spirit of Air might be a living tornado for a hermetic, or an eagle with mighty wings for a shaman, a flying elf for Path of the Wheel, whatever. So spirits of man might be anything from a wizened Shinto sage, to a classic Satan for Black Magic, to a Chaos tradition Slenderman.

Sprites are similar- they might look like robots, or Merry Men, or Pokemon, or office furniture, depending on what the technomancer is like.

Was anyone else at any level of that company still being paid? What the fuck.

How good is Hero Lab for creating and using AI characters? I might pick it up for just that reason. (Obviously with Data trails and Rigger5)
>>
>>47599957
Let them know beforehand what kind of Shadowrun campaign you want to do, a Deus Ex inspired one.

>>47599959
Fire Spirits and Water Spirits don't have to look like guys on fire or guys made out of water. Spirits of Man from Hermetic Conjurers for me look like Greco-Roman statues made out of astral marble. They can also look like the ghost of whoever the Spirit of Man leeched memories from, assuming the Spirit of Man leeched memories from a dead person that is.

>How good is Hero Lab for creating and using AI characters?

They're supported, but still have some open bugs.
The most obvious one is that some of their dice pool totals for skills are calculated incorrectly (the program adds the Attack Matrix Attribute instead of Charisma for a bunch of Social skills, for example).

I'd give it a 7/10 for creating them - you'll have the ranks and attribute you can add together yourself on another sheet, but doing that in-play off the Herolab sheet or the program itself would be annoying.

>Was anyone else at any level of that company still being paid?

An excellent question. We know that some freelancers went literal years without getting their pay, and when they got it they were often underpaid. Corporate debts were not being paid. the Cthulhutech and Eclipse Phase people were not being paid, hence the license reversions. Printers and editors were not being paid. Were full-time staff getting regular payments? I assume Randall Bills and Jason Hardy were getting cheques (which were not bouncing, unlike some other folks) because both of them were defenders of Coleman and retained their high positions through this mess.

Anyone have a link to the 'apology' (stretching the term to the breaking point) that CGL made?

I keep needing to check what thread I'm in. I've seen this discussion two or three times in the battletech general as well.
>>
>>47600728
Poor Battletech got it worse than we did. In 2009 they were getting excellent books, in terms of writing quality and art. At least SR books had long been shit, so we didn't have far to fall.
>>
>>47600797
It feels like a third of any given battletech general is bitching about stupid writing choices made in the sourcebooks or the god awful editing of the same. Its a lot like /srg/ really.

Nah, /whfg/ refuses to acknowledge age of sigmar. Now, /AoSg/ would be perfect for the battered wives club. Maybe invite the magic players who's decks get invalidated by a single common card in whatever the new block is. Then we can all bitch about how our companies love to fuck us.

The editing, layout, and proofreading is garbage. They're a step away from incomprehensible. The fact that there is a playable understanding of this game is rather astonishing.

Fluff and crunch are mixed. The chapter orders make no sense. The BBS style comments shit up page layout and readability horrendously.
>>

>7th sea

What's wrong with that game? Other than general fears of John Wickedness, I thought people were looking forward to the second edition.
>>
>>47601131

They removed roll and keep, refluffed half the nations, and the rules put everything into a "Player vs GM mentality" that is supported mechanically, and the book says that the GM should cheat if the Antagonists are losing too hard.

It has great things, one of them being "Dramatic Wounds" making you better, since you don't end up into the classic "Oh, I'm at -6, I better just sit down and beg for my life because I will fuck up everything otherwise". But for the most part, it looks like a train speeding up too fucking much and very likely to crash and burn.

I hope I'm wrong, because I loved the first edition, but the second edition seems like it will add at least as much shit as it removes.
>>
>>47601254
That's too bad. I'm a big fan of xKy from Legend of the Five Rings, I always thought it was a very nice system restriction (like limits in 5e) that let you build up your dice pool and feel great throwing a handful of polyhedrals, but still kept the math reasonable.
>>
>>47601254
I mean, cheating to keep the antagonists in the fight if they're getting rekt due to pure bad luck seems reasonable. How agressively do they reccomend you cheat though? Because there's totally a difference between fudging one or two rolls to hit and one or two misses into crits.
>>
So, I use roll20 for my Running, and was hoping to have some decent soundtracks for stealthing, after they first get spotted/goes loud, and for when things get balls-to-the walls with HRT arriving. Can anyone recommend some tracks for me for those situations to get those Cyberpunk aesthetics?
>>
>>47601423

Perturbator, Carpenter Brut, Dance with the Dead, Scattle.

DWTD would generally be good for low key/ramp up
Perturbator and CB would be good for most loud situations
>>
>>47601477
Awesome. I'll go right ahead and give 'em a listen. Thanks brother.

Someone actually made a pretty bitchin' music video for one of Perturbator's newest tracks that I considered sending to someone as "Shadowrun"

For all your chase scene needs.
>>
>>47601423
Boards of Canada makes for great ambient pieces, check out Geogaddi or Left Side Drive.

I'm listening to Lazerhawk right now, Redliner (the album and song) is awesome for chase and combat scenes.

You should listen to Deus Ex: Human Revolution's Soundtrack. IIRC, each area of the game has an ambient, alarm, and combat song. It sounds like its exactly what you want.

More generally for the cyberpunk/shadowrun music: Hotline Miami Soundtracks, Mega Drive, everyone else I mentioned, and Perturbator.

It's not that cheating to keep an adversary going is bad, but you don't introduce a mechanical way to play with the Hero vs Villain advantages and then you tell the GM "feel free to cheat tho" because that shouldn't be an option that should be taken that openly.

And honestly, on 7th sea, luck is a big deal. I remember getting lucky, and investing all my drama dice, into a single attack against the BBEG, and did over 75 damage in a single attack. Even when the GM spent points for the BBEG it ended up with half his life down the drain in one of the first few attacks. And he rolled with it.

Same thing on Shadowrun, where a bad roll and a good one means death for anyone that can't burn Edge. And you need to keep flexibility as a GM for the sake of the players. Cheat, but not to keep your toys alive, but to keep the game flow going.

Deus Ex has soundtrack, which suits this: Ambient, Stress, Combat themes. Also, Splinter Cell's nice for stealthing.
