Except it's not a fringe case, it's something that anyone with any semblance of creativity with Time can do. The argument isn't that its too powerful, the argument is that its clearly more powerful than other Arcana, especially when some Arcana actually got worse. This is why more game designers need to embrace the white room style of design.

I haven't, yet, but I want to.
I'm still sort-of running my Demon game, and the last player who left has expressed interest in playing Mage, but I don't know about my three remaining players.
I sort of doubt one of them is going to want to make another new character after only 1 session with his Demon, and one of the others I'm not even sure if I'd want to invite, with how infrequently he shows up.

Plus, the Demon game's gotten to an interesting point, imo, since one of the players is currently Cover-less.

The Psychic Domination Rote for 1 experience is definitely one of the "I Win' buttons of Mage 2e.

Another great Rote is Fate 2 Exceptional Luck to grant 9 or 8-Again quality on any spellcasting rolls in addition to its other useful effects.

I'm still piecing through the fluff. I just finished chapters one and two. The stuff on Consilia made my eyes cross. No idea how I'm going to represent that shit in my game. I'm the one who's been talking about Primordial Dream Silent Hill shenanigans, and I need to a) figure out how that'll work and how long it's been going on, and b) figure out how the city's residents are structured. It might also be worth it to think of a few problems that can come about from my main Mystery. Maybe some cultists or something.

Also, I'm probably going to have some Circle of the Crone Acolytes and a few Beasts show up, maybe some human Cultists and spooky monsters, but I'm going to be lazy and just use Dread Powers or treat everything mechanically like mages. Way easier to stat out that way.

That said, I'm a loser with low self esteem and high anxiety, so who knows if I'll run at all. Hopefully I'll get over the hump.

One of the problems is that some Arcana actually had their speed bumps removed (Time, Fate), and others, not so much (Forces, Life, Prime).

I believe it's more a problem of varioust authors writing each Arcana, all with different ideas concerning power levels, capabilities and limitations.

Step 1. Think of a guy you really, really hate.
Step 2. Fire up MS Paint and draw a stick figure caricature of the bastard, labeled with their name.
Step 3. Spend 3 Mana and fire your Psychic Domination rote with Spatial Sympathy and Temporal Sympathy, aiming for "the earliest possible point in their life wherein they could have killed themselves within 3 seconds."
Step 4. Keep trying until you get an exceptional success (not hard with a rote), at which point you blow past all Withstand ratings.
Step 5. Dead.

If they do, odds are they can get one of their own friends to use temporal sympathy to cast a protection spell in between when you controlled him and when he killed himself. Yep. With the long weekend going on now, have done two sessions. Double with the regular group.
Introduced them all to each other. Started them on the path to the weirdness of the first Mystery of one of the players.
Somewhat concerned about how good Fate is when it comes to generating Beat-rewarding conditions.
One of the players managed to get 5 xp (3 regular, 2 arcane, I think it was) by the end of session 2.

But the Acanthus threw out like four conditions, for each member of the cabal, and they get XP for them.

Assuming they have changed a lot over their lives and haven't always been an asshole, they got a weak temporal sympathy to when they were a kid. 3 Withstand.
Ritual for 15 hours to get up to 8 dice.
-4 dice to raise potency to five. 4 dice.
Psychic Domination +2 reach effect costs 1 mana.
Paradox chance die.

You can now officially start trying. If you spend willpower you can get 3 additional dice but getting the 3 successes needed to ignore resolve can be hard. Also, as long as you get 1 success people with space, mind, or time senses might notice what you are doing. Your doing nothing but pinging peoples mage sight letting them know something is going on.

This spell costs 15 hours and 3 mana to cast. 4-7 dice depending on willpower spending, with a chance die for paradox the chance of it coming up is negligible. If your opponent has any supernatural senses(or any of his friends. Or any of your foes) every time you do this you are leading a trail of bread crumbs to your door.

Also time travel 101. Its hard to make it better, but you can always make it worse.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think even on a failure you're going to be pinging Mage Sight. For the same reason that a Vampire failing to Dominate someone is still using a magical power, and thus pings Mage Sight.
Also if you don't know his Sympathetic Name you'll need 6 potency, and it's a -2 for each +1 above the base based on Primary Spell Factor and your dots in the arcanum. Assuming Mind 2, that's a total of -8 to hit Potency 6.

Because Mages are pretty much the undisputed kings of running Mystery Cults?

I mean, every single Order runs them, and they're one of the primary focuses of the Seers, Guardians, and even the Ladder (though they're just as likely to run a mundane organization as an occult one.) So it makes sense for them to get an upgraded version.

Actually, oWoD Tremere weren't the result of a Mage being Embraced. Pretty sure they've addressed that in a book before, and the Mage just loses all their magic.

Tremere were born of the man himself, a static mage(equivelant of a Sleepwalker with Second Sight merits, or a Proximus) doing a ritual to make himself immortal. You could probably keep it so that YOU don't form the first pangs of Sympathy with a child, and it seems like they need to be aware that they are who they're referred to, so simply keeping from regularly calling them the same thing would help in keeping them from developing a Sympathetic Name. With Space, you could also keep from imprinting on them yourself by undoing any connections that might form towards you.

Let me stop you right there. You can't use Sympathetic Range on this spell, because the Temporal Sympathy attainment specifies that it's used with spells cast at Sensory range (to the subject's present form). This stipulation plus the need to spend a Yantra slot on a sympathetic representation that probably doesn't give you any dice makes it fairly hard to use this ability on someone who considers you an enemy, you'd be better off aiming your debilitating spells at the present moment.

The rules aren't specific here but as a Storyteller I wouldn't allow this. Aim your time-shifted spells by specifying the date or the targeted age of your subject, not with reference to external factors that would need other Time spells to discover.

I don't think so. I believe "Genie" was the name given to her by either the rescuers or the researchers involved in her case, which didn't happen to her until she was 13. Tokyo is pretty weak this time around. London has runes created by walking paths. Salamanca has portals to alternate universes. Tucson has the ghosts of those who haven't died yet. Los Angels has massive Astral possession.

It's consistently good, but there's nothing great like Montreal or Basra, and I wish we'd seen Asia other than Japan or anywhere in the Middle East. One of the big failings in the Mage settings for me is that they still treat the Orders as being universally consistent, and none of the settings have any Nameless.

An Acanthus with Fate primary, Death secondary with the Shadowname Tiresias. Possibly stricken blind during whatever made them Awaken. I could go lame and say a hate crime for being trans, since that kiiiind of jives with the original namebearer, but Iunno.

For those not aware, Tiresias is one of those major/minor Greek characters who doesn't really have any big major event, but he turns up in a few stories. He's also in the Odyssey as the blind seer in the Underworld that Odysseus gets help from. Tiresias was turned into a woman for seven years, because Hera was annoyed he hit some fucking snakes with a stick (I mean copulating) and he married and had children and was a priestess to Hera and a prostitute of great renown. Later Hera and Zeus were in an argument about who enjoyed sex more, men or women. Tiresias said women have ten times more pleasure. Hera, who said men have more pleasure, blinded him because Greek Gods. Zeus compensated by giving Tiresias the gift of prophecy.

Montreal was great, and so was Berlin. I also loved Beijing, but it definitely needed more wordcount. Vampire had the best Tokyo of the bunch, too.

The only city in B&S I didn't love was Raleigh, and even then it was still novel. Werewolf likewise had great settings, and I'm not even a Werewolf fan. You can see that a lot of a wordcount probably got taken from the Mage settings, and that bums me out because they're my favorite part of each 2e book so far.

I've got really high hopes for the eventual Hunter and Mummy settings.

I'm waiting for the Dark Eras Companion for crossover rules and as these past six threads have demonstrated, I'm one of many people too stupid to grasp Time. For now, I'm just gonna sit on my reincarnation-Obsessed mage and whittle away at my 1960s setting; Apollo (Thearch Obrimos focused on the space program as the Ladder rebuilt), Starflower (Thyrsus/Mysterium hippie in over her head with 'benevolent' spirits), and Philby (Mastigos/Guardian, overly fond of using Sleeper assets to strike against the Seers) are my current face characters for my 1960s setting. A Scelestus Ladder Mastigos by the name of Valentine (technically uses Narcissus as his new Shadow Name after Abyssal Awakening, not really spreading that around though), primary Arcana these days are Space and Time, he's competent in Mind but hasn't really used it much of late, one dot of Death too. Is running an Abyssal legacy based around creating alternate selves from worlds that never existed, later attainments involve causing them to become the new him if he dies and shunting bad effects onto others, but he hasn't reached that point yet. His abyssal masters have promised him it though and he pursues it out of a mixture of hubris and fear of death. Currently just building up influence in the Ladder in order to get better protected. Most of his obsessions of late have to do with mortality and choices, but he's happy to help with other stuff if it means progression in the Ladder. He wholeheartedly believes in a good chunk of Ladder philosophy, he just also believes he has become indispensable. His wisdom is rather low and he's not particularly interested in raising it, so he might soon join the ranks of the Mad if he's not careful.

He will take the first napkin. Yes, I did mostly design him over figuring out how to stat Funny Valentine in Mage. Turns out the answer was lots of Abyssal tutelage, and maybe some Madness.

You don't really need a full Consilium's worth of Mages to run a game. You mainly need the higher-Status people(Epopt, Adamant Sage, Deacon, Heirarch, Councilors, etc) and anybody with otherwise unique or not-numerous positions(Interfector, Provosts, maybe Heralds, etc), and then the specific Mages that your players have connections to(Rivals, mentors, allies, etc)

But you don't really need info for every Mage in the consilium; past the above, any time you need a Mage for a role that doesn't fit the ones you've already got down, just make them up on the spot.

Of course, I guess if you're not good at improvising characters, that could be a little difficult.

The equipment bonus is a function of potency, not mana. You don't spend mana to give it the equipment bonus, you just invest 1 or more points of mana into the objects construction.

You make a sword. If you have 4 Potency you could use one to give it the +1 equipment bonus, one to make it Durability 2, and the other two on increasing it's Mana capacity. You also invest the maximum of three mana at the time of casting.

Every time you swing the sword, the +1 equipment bonus means that it uses up one stored mana, meaning you can hit someone with it three times before it's supply is exhausted and it crumbles to dusat as all Tass does. The only alternative would be to swing once/twice and then use the Channel Mana spell to pump more mana into the sword to keep it intact as your attacks go on.

A sword is a tool. Regardless of whether you add any Durability, equipment bonus or dice trick, each use of the sword will expend one point of mana until it has none left and disintegrates.

I believe the platonic sword would have its maximum equipment and other bonuses throughout all its uses, not progressively weaken until it crumbles.

Also, don't forget to add Duration with penalties or Reach or the sword will crumble after a turn and you'll lose any mana stored in it.

The Platonic Form spell is a HUGE mana sink with limited benefits, and only worth the effort if a mage is truly desperate. If a mage has enough time and mana to effectively use the spell, they probably are not that desperate, and should consider other options.

Prime got nerfed in 2e real bad. There aren't even sample Prime spells to harvest mana from objects or people or to create complex objects like cars, guns and computers, likely because no mage short of an archmaster would be able to afford the mana cost.

I never said Prime couldn't do anything interesting, and it indeed has a fun spell or two (with some nasty side effects).

Nevertheless, its purview is very limited, it doesn't really solve the problem of scarce mana in 2e, and some of the coolest parts of Prime 1e, the various and useful phantasms, have received a demonstrable power downgrade.

Forces also has its problems. At this point, it is my hope that Obrimos will be as cool and powerful as their setting description by the time of the release of Mage 3e in 2026.

Getting Truth as a purview helped Prime, but that my favourite spell is now a mana sink is frustrating. I want to be the Green Lantern. Honestly, I'm just going to allow it. The only other thing that really bothers me is Proximus changes. I don't hate them, they're not bad. But they're not what I like out of Proximi. So here are my changes and notes on why I'd run them that way if I ever used them.

I like Proximi to feel more like occult psychics or whatever than the more wizardy style of thing that Mages do. I like their powers to feel innate to them as opposed to calling down hire powers. I love the way the Curse works now, but I hate that my Proximus concept that I was looking forward to updating doesn't work anymore because a lot of the themes I wanted to do with an orphaned Proximus are impossible.

He was from a Dynasty of Crusaders and soldiers that tended to get themselves killed. His mother was injured fighting something, and ended up leaving her baby in the snow outside of a strip club where she could hear some people coming to smoke or whatever, and he got raised by them. He grew up a comic book loving weirdo who did parkour, and he ended up seeing a mugging, jumped down to help, and when the person tried to stab him, the blade broke off on his stomach instead. He later developed other powers, like Celestial Fire and Body Control, and decided that since he didn't know his real parents, he MUST be an orphaned alien. He sewed a costume and became a vigilante.

By my reading it's an option for when you want a super sword. You dump all your potency into it and then laugh as you're spending one mana per use on a Sword that's dealing 5 more lethal than the runner up. Meanwhile if you don't take the option at all the sword is within Fallen constraints and therefore isn't spending a mana on each use. So you Green Lantern by investing one mana into some random created object, or you go full overdrive and create the Sword that kills stuff dead. You then turn it on your Mastigos buddy for him to dodge so it turns into an autohit.

I also got the impression that ley lines, nodes and geomancy would be far more important and interesting in 2e, and thus help the Prime Arcana. No such luck. Ley lines and nodes are nearly as lackluster as 1e and the resonance hook is largely covered by Spririt for which it is far more useful.

However, if a mage is into feng shui wants to power his toaster or be good at gardening, by all means spend time and mana creating nodes.

Since Signs of Sorcery deals with matter Supernal, I really hope it expands and improves on Prime's abilities.

The penalty is reduced by one each day, until it hits zero, and they're no longer bitter self hating assholes. For example, at Wisdom 7, if Leo ever commits a Sin against Wisdom (stealing, for instance), he'll need to roll to resist losing Wisdom. Even if he succeeds, he'll take a penalty equal to 10-7 (-3). The penalty will start at -3 to begin with, and then will be -2 the next day, -1 the third, and finally Leo will shake it off and be at normal traits.
This is a dumb flaw and will need to be remade. It was dumb when I made it.

Was a character from a fairly fun manga called Jojo's Bizzare Adventure (part four and onwards are great examples for working out Mysteries in combat time). The character himself was an oddball who lacked a few of the major traits of a Stand User (main supernaturals, humans with weird pseudo spirits), insisted he was an alien (despite some indication to the contrary, which he explained away), and had a horrible allergic reaction to sirens. Most notably on the missing important bits front was that he couldn't see Stands and had no manifestation outside of being able to shapeshift into whatever he felt like (usually Stands will have tells or what are called punch ghosts in fan parlance when in use).

Apparently I only did give him Obrimos+Life. Was that also a rule in 1e and I just forgot it?

Either way, a lot of the powers don't work anymore. I played the character on WanWic as basically living like his Dynasty without realizing it, while also being so different. For instance he's a wispy effeminate little ambiguously queer kid with great hair who carries a purity ring and chastely dotes on his childhood best friend, while his Dynasty is all self-sacrificing drink-to-forget style Obrimos mercenaries. But he still can't help but defend the innocent.

Also he was basically an Assassin's Creed reference. His costume was based on Ezio, his Dynasty is Eagles. He does parkour. His Nimbus (which they don't seem to have in 2e) was a screaming Owl.

The party wakes up in a seemingly abandoned Exarchal Verge, warded to prevent entry or exit. Gives them a good deal of hooks and a relatively constrained setting for the first few games. His dad on the other hand was a gigolo who Awakened. It was another player, and I forgot why we decided on it, but we decide he'd be Leo's dad and neither of them would know it. I actually retconned him to have the same colour eyes as the other character.

Why would anyone allow Mages into their other gamelines games? It's worse than Beast for adding hassles for the ST and making the existing players feel irrelevant to the special snowflake. But, unlike Beast, it doesn't need crossover because it has its own robust motivations for doing its own thing.
