OP here. Would mixing Temple Guard Blue with some either white scar or Vallejo Glacier Blue yield me a color similar to Baharroth Blue? My dumbass didn't pick up a pot the last week they were on sale in my LGS.
>>
>>46909877

I'm in the UK, about 40-ish miniatures, pretty good finish. Budget isn't a problem, so long as it's less than £200.
>>
>>46909893
Tough to say. My inclination is probably, but getting the right amount would be really difficult. I might transfer the paints to dropper bottles to try and make finding a precise ratio easier.
>>
>>46910171
>40-ish miniatures,

So £5 a miniature.

These guys do a £5/mini rate for basic infantry and basic painting http://www.golempaintingstudio.co.uk/pricing.htm#

These guys charge the unit's price from GW as the painting fee for 'tabletop' standard, but also offer 'above tabletop' for double the unit's price http://www.the-vanus-temple.com/warhammer-commission-painting-service/
>>
>>46910307
They're both in dropper bottles, but the process of transferring them is quite tedious, so I might give that up and just switch back over to pots as the bottles run out.

Yeah it smells terrible. Be sure not to let the models sit in it though, even non-acetone will eat plastic if it's left in there long enough.

Just letting them sit for a few minutes to get that last bit of primer off.

>Is using Windex/Water mix a good way to clean brushes while painting?

Cleaning *while* you're painting?

I have a big cup of water that I rinse my brushes out in. If I'm painting with a metallic paint, I use different brushes and a different cup, or else I stop what I'm doing and clean both the cup and the brushes before switching from non-metallic to metallic or back again.

The actual brush *cleaning* comes after I'm done with the session.

>>46911244
>No, Windex has ammonia which will ruin certain brushes.

I also imagine the addition of the extra chemicals might change the flow properties of whatever paint you're trying to use while you're ... well, you know, painting!

So I'm trying to build terrain from various materials, just playing around with them, got a few ideas and testing a couple of methods to glue them together.

Currently I'm trying to build an ammo crate out of coffee wooden stirring sticks. Got some clay as well, maybe I'll build a stone wall that's half blown off or something.

A tiny drop of Windex is a very popular surface tension breaker and flow aid for airbrushers/wash users. Dish soap has also been used.

>>
>>46913319
the only safe way to transport them is by using a foam case either by buying foam, cutting it in size for every miniature until you have enough slots for all of them and then encasing the whole foam in a hard case or you can buy a case for them with those slots already made.

May also have figured out how to properly highlight them, too.

He's not perfect, but he's only a sergeant; I knocked out him and his squad over the course of a week. There's maybe eight more like him to go.

Plus it causes CNS damage. You absorb it through your skin in addition to the vapor. You really should use something else if possibel
>>
>>46913319
Use smaller scale like 6mm and magnetic bases. Get some boxes and put a steel plate in the bottom for the magnet to stick to. Galvanized steel roofing flashing sheets can be bought for extremely cheap at a hardware store. Since the base to height ratio is so high they basically cannot tip over and the magnets will keep them from knocking about from bumps.

So, a while back I figured out a way to potentially make dirt cheap Valhallan's. I was gonna post pics in the thread, then life happened.

So now, way after everyone has stopped caring, I show you my results.

Tips if you want to try this
Pros
>The warlord greatcoat infantry are pretty cheap, even if only 25 out of 40 are greatcoats. Plus side, you can direct order sprues from Warlord so you can get them cheaper
>Victoria Lamb weapons work well with them, especially now that weapons are resin they'll be easier to work with.

Cons
>GW weapons are fucking stupid big compared to them, I'll give you a close up picture of the GW weapons in a bit, it really highlights how big GW weapons are.
>other than weapons, all these guys have is Soviet gear. You'll want some extra sci fi bits I think to future them up a bit, but they look good as is

I don't have any heavy weapons or I'd make a heavy weapon team with the prone bodies. On the bright side, a single box gets you 20 regular infantry and 5 prone guys to use for heavy weapons, you just need a source for weapons.

Let me know if the pics are too big, this is a new phone and it's a bit finicky with photos

Fun fact, the chainsword is literally taller than the guy carrying it.

Also, the meltas are huge too.

I personally would recommend third party chainsword and special weapons. Vic makes good ones that obviously fit this scale, but mad robot makes good stuff too. If I wanted to make an army of these guys, I'd probably go all Vic for weapons.

Just PURGED almost $3,500 worth of 40K I have collected over the last 2 decades. BA, DA, SW, GK, -=][=-, and old metal Eldar.

Distilled it all down to my Thousand Sons, Daemons of Tzeentch, and the core (and mostly new/current models) Eldar.

Feels. So. Good.

Now I am just breaking everything down into organized bitz containers and/or fully constructing the core elements of my armies.

Bought myself a Chaos Vindicator as a present ;) It's also what I have wanted to finish off my Thousand Sons for a really long time. Just wouldn't allow myself to buy anything new until I got rid of my HOARD.

Army Painter dries fast so you have to hold it closer to the models. Like closer than 12 inches. Read the can's directions if you don't believe me. They'll tell you the distance you should hold it at.

The problem with spraying so close is that AP cans also have a fire hose like shotgun nozzle. It's very easy to overspray and drown your miniatures. So be sure to do fast, fine spritzes and mists. Don't just hose your models down.
>>
So I'm looking to upgrade from cheap nylon brushes to Series 7 Sable brushes. Do you guys generally use the miniature brushes more, or just the standard rounds? What size generally? I want to start with 2 or 3 in the most commonly used size and style at the moment.

I think they're the same. Miniature just has a shorter handle. Size 0 is all you need. If you need one slightly larger get a size 2. They have practically the same point so if you're comfortable with the 2 you don't even need the 0.

Raphael 8404 is better than W&N S7. Pic related, from top to bottom is S7 miniature, S7 regular, and Raphael 8404.

Don't know why you morons keep hyping up W&N S7 as the "best" brush. Guess you've just never held better.

Have you considered mixing a bunch of washes and picking out stones?
It's not too much work if you use the right brush, but it would probably take this whole thing to the next level.
Like this building here.

The space between the stones looks a little shallow, maybe you could pin wash it with a dark dirt paint.
Or just apply the paint all over and then rub it of with a cloth so it stays in the recesses.

Aside from that it looks really good already, just a little too uniform imo.

Read this. Got some stuff on hair and fur.
You can also use stamps instead of carving it by hand if you got a good source for it.
And just in general block out the shape first.
Something like a rectangle for the snout and the general headshape, slightly smaller than you want the volume of the final piece.
Once that has dried you can add the texture and details onto that without worrying about the general shape turning into a blob anymore.

Get lights in the 5000-6000K range. Tape a piece of parchment paper (that you should already have on hand for your wet palette) over the bulb to help defuse the light to avoid harsh white reflections on the mini. 2 or more light sources are recommended.

Weeeeeell. The base is too small for starters. Makes him look like a naughty boy waiting to be told off by the headmaster.

Probably over airbrushed too. It's a tool, not a solve-everything button.
>>
>>46925163
For starters: don't just slather washes all over flat surfaces. It looks awful. Use a smaller brush and only put it in the recesses with flat things.

On textured stuff like fur and faces though, go mad. These are when it really shines.

If you're washing a larger area, do it all in one go, or you'll get a line where it dries.
>>
>>46925288
Whatever you're washing though, watch out for pooling.
If there's too much wash in a recess, use your brush like a sponge to draw some of it away.
If you don't do this you can get bubbles and general Bad Stuff when the wash is dry, and it's not easy to fix at that point.
Check a little bit after you've finished brushing the wash on, because gravity is a thing.
>>
>>46925288
>>46925473
Would it be possible to apply a wash (just a diluted layer paint) with a drybrushing technique instead of slathering it?

Like would a drab wash applied sparingly make for good dirt/soot accumulation?
>>
>>46925687
You would stipple or sponge the wash on for that effect, but yes.

Textured plasticard, 1/50 scale. I picked it up at my local model shop, which sells mainly model trains and airfix kits: most staff at such small business hobby stores are usually more then helpful, just ask for it. In british pounds, it cost me less then £10 for enough plasticard for a while 3000 point army with plenty spare.

As for making them, it's a simple case of cutting, gluing to base then cleaning up. I recommend adding at least two different textures to each base to add variety.

I'm putting together a bunch of models that need to be painted in stages. What is the best way to assemble a painted model without ruining the paint job while also getting the strongest bond on the part?
Super glue?
Plastic glue?
Mask the plastic or just scrape off the paint before gluing?

Are they plastic or metal? For plastic, super or plastic glue works fine but be careful how much you put on. For metal get it prepared for pinning, then paint, then pin.

Stardrakes look like they should be fine with the wings attached tbqh. I'd rather work around them than deal with matching up that skin-on-skin join (with lots of weight on it, that any catch on the end of the wing will apply a lot of leverage to.)

For the riders, they'll hardly be load bearing so you can either do a tiny spot of superglue or, (what I'd do) put a pin in the saddle and a hole in their ass, and just put a dab of superglue on the pin when the time comes to reunite them.

You're obviously going to paint the white a flat white to start with.

The initial wash in >>46929472 for honey marble to add the stained areas could be one approach, as well as wobbling your brush to make the lines slightly fuzzy-edged. Added random bits from the rogue trader kit, cut a knife in half and glued it on top of the crate to make it look like someone just put a knife through the crate, added an ammo pack and a bolter as well.

Going to prime it later and then paint it. I was thinking about making a tiny stencil of a wolf or an ammo symbol like a three bullets surrounded by a circle and then painting it with a white over the wood to further reinforce the "ammo crate" idea. Yeah, I see your trouble. Your black's too black, and your white's not white enough. What you want is to try and simulate depth.

Try taking your white and drybrushing it into the surface. It'll deliver a textured coating that'll blend into the basecoat, giving a textured fade to the black. Should do marble decently.

Are starship troopers models not "true" plastic?

Because I've been trying to glue these warrior bugs together with testors liquid cement and it ain't doing shit. The models you see already built were like that when I got the lot, so I have no idea what the last guy used.

It definitely seems like they're a different material. Normally you'd see stuff melting in a minute or so, but with these guys no luck. Kind if a shame because I'm worried the super glue will pop off eventually, but oh well
>>
>>46936290
I have never seen a blue label Testors glue, but im not sure if thats a big deal either.

Also I didnt know Starship Troopers had models, now im going to have to buy some because its one of my favorite movies, fuck you for showing me :)

Good luck man, they're hard as hell to find, although stuff like plasma bugs and hoppers are still cheap.

Best bet is looking for starter sets, but you're gonna shit a brick when you see how much they go for now. I got lucky and picked up most of my stuff when it was at its lowest (like MI boxes for 6 bucks type cheap) my advice would be snooping around on swap forums and join the starship troopers game Facebook page, they tend to find leads on cool stuff every so often and help each other find models

Now people are jacking up the prices to stupid levels trying to milk the market.

On the bright side, rebelminis has the rights to most of the more original metal sculpts, so you can still get movie light infantry, spider bugs, the grizzly suits, Chas bots, cliff mites, etc.

Is there a specific brand of sticky tac I should get? I got the white sticky tac at my local CVS and it holds for like, a minute, and then shit falls apart
>>
>>46936722

There's no difference between brands. The "official" blue one is a bit softer and less crumbly while the white poster tack is firmer, but the white stuff still sticks just fine. My white stuff was from 3M and is called poster mounting tack.
>>
>>46936722

Knead it more. Keep kneading it until it starts to get warm and even hot. It should get stickier.

Looks really nice man, they're coming along really well.

I guess you could do something with the bone sabre things for the black dragon guy, and I'd say either a power fist or a sternguard bolter would suit the crimson fist.

Not really sure what you could do for the other chapters. Maybe a power spear and storm shield for the minotaur?

I only started playing 2 years ago and when my friends hosted an intro match for the gang to get into the hobby, I picked tau because one of they guys was using his guard for the match. I then settled for Grey Knights (which I'm currently regretting because I'm like at a 90% loss rate), but early last year I started my Tau army. Now I'm working on my Dark Eldar and seeing how AdMech just WIPED the floor with my Grey Knights tonight (I conceded turn 2), I'm already regretting DE because I was between AdMech and them. Picked DE because that fluff and aesthetic are GREAT.

The Bloodaws are part of Bran Bloodmaws company. Bran is regarded as particularly viscous and animalistic, even for SW. The Curse of the Wulfen seems to haunt his company the most and Bran himself is rumored to be cursed by it (although he can actually control it). The FW rules for Bran have you roll each turn to replace his model with a super deathkillmurderwerewolf.

Also maw=mouth, BloodMaw=Bloody Mouth

Hey /wip/,
New to the hobby I guess. Painted 40k around 17 years ago when I was early high school but never really applied myself, but I got some Infinity this time around and I'm really enjoying it. Decided to get a steel mini from HeroForge for a Fragged Empire game but was wondering if anyone had any experience with them? Is it possible to remove the rough texture, or pool the primer to smooth it out? Is fixing it going to be outside of my skill level? Thanks Anons!
>>
>>46938257

Well the roughness is a trait of the mini itself, so you're going to need some way to sand it down to get it smooth. I'd recommend just getting their grey plastic in the future. I guess you could maaaaybe fill the holes in with liquid greenstuff but that would be a hairy project to keep the details and not look weird I think.
>>
>>46938367

Base their colour on wounds, sickness, disease and decay and you'll be fine. Bruise purple and yellow. Pus yellow in wounds. Green rot. Bright red infected wound. Rust. Mushrooms. That kind of thing.

Do some research and pick a theme.

Getting there but still a lot of work to do:
Get a second layer of leadbelcher on the carapace trim
Finish washing the hard edges, especially on the armour plate tans faceplate trim
Touch up the metal trims
Dirty up the gun barrels
Finish off the metal handles on the carapace
Highlight all the rivets
Dry brush the base
Add some weathering

Does anyone have a good guide on weathering?

Sorry guys, I know this question was answered in precious threads, but I'm having trouble finding it in the archives.

What's the best solvent for stripping? I got the assault on blackreach set when I was 14 or 15, but I didn't get any paints except for the ones included (which was incredibly limited). So my models suffer from impatient teenager and shitty paint syndrome. Now that I'm coming back to the hobby, I'd love to work on my brush control before starting the IG army I'm gonna buy.
>>
>>46941128
You could also have googled 'how to strip plastic miniatures'.

The answer is a bit location-dependent, but in the UK Fairy Power Spray and Dettol both work well, while people tend to go with Simple Green in the US.

I'll let the usual NANPR recommend that, as I've never used it.
