Hey, if you want to be the next runner they send the cops after because they don't feel like paying you, by all means.

Also, I got a hilarious bug with Maximum Law where both him and his Puppet stand-in appeared simultaneously despite that whole storyline not even having triggered yet. It resulted in me not being able to access his store for a few missions because they both somehow triggered that they weren't the current vendor. Granted, not too bad a bug, but I still found it incredibly confusing.

How common is it for a DM to simply not allow deckers in their games? Seems to be really friggin' common.
>>
>>46483313
Is there actually an ending to her storyline that doesn't imply she's going full Satan again? Because seriously, fuck the fact that killing the cult leader somehow leads to her enjoying burning down an orphanage and having claws made out of hellfire. It was the only sensible solution.

As someone who GMs Shadowrun from time to time?

nodeckers.jpg

Even in 5 it's much easier to just handwavium that shit than make everyone sit around while the decker solo adventures for 60 minutes busting through a security system.

I used to think if I just ran the groups parallel everything would be hunky-dory but it was not. Everyone ends up butthurt about the decker getting so much time. If people get butthurt I am doing something wrong as GM. Eventually I realized the wrong was letting people play deckers at all.

If you want to be a tech person, street sam and rigger are both incredibly viable options.
>>
>>46483565

It happened more in previous editions I think but one of sr5's improvements was making decking work concurrently with meatspace really well.

Meanwhile, old guards and people running earlier editions would probably say no lots.
>>
>>46483565
Wait, what? I'd say deckers are the one essential party role. Without one, you're just running around being caught on every single camera, tripping every single biometric scanner and getting fucked over by every single locked door there is. You can shoot people instead of talking to them, you can just tell magic to fuck right off, and you can talk your way out of sticky situations, but you can't talk or shoot your way out of a Matrix problem.
>>
I want to build a decker that uses Attack actions mostly. But why would anyone use Brute Force?

Let's say you're trying to disable a gun. You brute force into it. Now that your enemy knows you're trying to hack into his gun. So he just turn off wireless. How can I become more efficient with Brute Force?
>>
>>46483684
>>46483684

If you save the innocents then the final confrontation is framed as freeing the Horned God and it attaching it's self to Glory as a symbiotic relationship. So instead of Glory holding onto the bloodlust of the Adversary through her actions she makes peace with her past and childhood and gets a weird healing power I never used because she was always my go to CQC Specialist.
>>
>>46483684
If you don't say anything she purifies the spirit and bonds with it
>>
>>46483748

Put all the dice into Brute Force. Codeslinger, specialisation, get crazy high logic, raise your deck ' s attack attribute as much as you possibly can, etc, try to hit the 5d6 init level etc, maybe take the Adrenaline Boost quality too etc.

They can't turn off their gun if you brick it before they can react.
>>
>>46483748
brute force would be to get marks, combined with the spike it can do a lot of damage long term, but is not the full focus of things.
2nd, sometimes you cant turn off a device. If they have a defense decker/ security spider, they wont be able to turn off the central hub, but you can still screw with the parts of the PAN/WAN.
>>
>>46483748
See the fact that he is now less effective than he used to be due to not getting his awesome wireless bonuses anymore as a partial victory.

>>46483697
Sounds like your problem either is not emphasizing the fact they need to get the decker to where he needs to be, or not making it hard enough for him that he's going to trip something and force the others to protect him.

You need the face to get in without raising an alarm immediately, you need the mage for astral bullshit and watchers, you need the decker for KOMPUTAHS, and you need the sammy for when shit inevitably goes south. If one of the archetypes constantly gets more spotlight, that's probably a failure of you as a GM.
>>
>>46484007
Sleazy just seems better...?
>>
>>46484033
But as far as a grunt holding a gun, he can just turn off the wireless

>Sounds like your problem either is not emphasizing the fact they need to get the decker to where he needs to be, or not making it hard enough for him that he's going to trip something and force the others to protect him.

Afraid not. I've got over two decades of experience running games. I won't make any judgment on my quality as a GM, but I can say the people who I run for aren't clinging to me because I am the only person they know who can run games.

Based on that experience, I can tell you that balancing deckers against the rest of the party simply relies on having a group that's okay with the decker getting so much alone time. Since that sort of group is rare, I just don't allow deckers. It's quicker and easier than dealing with a hurt feelings report.

As I noted, I've tried running meatspace/matrix at the same time in parallel and even that doesn't work because everyone else works off one description of events while the decker works off a different -- if related -- description of events.

It's a lot of extra work that almost always results in extra aggravation.

But hey, you don't have to play with me.
>>
How exactly, aside from drugs and snowflake matatypes, do you get the maximum 5d6 init dice? They all seem to cancel each other out.
>>
>>46484105
Depending on how you play, it might be. But at least Attack can just brick the everliving shit out of everything, so a decker who ends up in firefights and the like will probably prefer to just make stuff stop working as opposed to the target not noticing he is being hacked when there's clearly a decker doing Matrix bullshit 50 feet from him.
>>
>>46484131
Either brick it with dataspikes (he only notices he's being hacked if you succeed, and hopefully that means it's too late given the low device rating of weapons), or let him turn off the wireless and lose a free action while lowering his usefulness in combat (since it would presumably be a smartgun if it was running wireless).

Being able to brick everyone's weapons at the drop of a hat would make sammies fucking useless.

+4 REA, +9 init, and +3d6 init.

Well I specifically said "aside from drugs and snowflake metatypes", so I'm guessing you can't get a passive (or quasi-passive, as wired reflexes need to be turned on) 5d6 dice without houserules.
>>
>>46486889
i can get over the fact that the orks have elf ears, and are just tougher and slower. But the games themselves kinda lacked the grit orks have, you know.

I imagine orks and trolls not being too different from humans, because they are still human. Just tougher. where as elves are prettier with longer ears.

>>46486901
which is weird, as she's about as personable as a brick.

But they're not 'still human'. They're very different; different biology, different hormones, different lifespan, all of which create a different culture. Heck, the fact that 60 years has created multiple racial cultures and subcultures says a lot about how not-human metahumanity is. It cheapens it when you say, "Human, but stronger" or "Human, but more agile" or "Human, but short."

well, we're human...and we have to compare them to ourselves.

orks live shorter lives because they suffer more wear and tear, but have more muscle

elves are more agile yet some how live longer lives.

dwarves are short, and just like IRL midgets, dwarves get along very well with more dwarves.

>>46487268
Sure, compare them to other humans, but if all you see are the most basic, physically apparent-at-a-glance differences, then you're missing the bigger picture. Run Faster has a good chapter on it, but just take orcs. They're not only bigger, their bodies are full of muscle-building growth hormones that incline them to jobs in heavy industry, but also violent confrontation, which in turn leads to high rates of incarceration. Orcs regularly have multiple births and, combined with the push towards the outskirts of civilization, leads to strong familial bonds and a pack mentality when dealing with problems. They not only live shorter lives, but they mature far faster than humans; an orc can't get 18 years of childhood; by the time his human compatriots are getting talked to about what to put their dick in, he's already been through the worst of puberty and wants to get out in the world. At every stage of development, they are larger and more mature than their fellows, which stresses a system not meant for them.

What comes out at the end of this, on both a personal and societal scale, is something distinctly inhuman.
>>
>>46487198
You can't stack different foci, only one provides bonus at time.
>>
>>46487459
No idea how many dermal deposits Eiger has, but the fact she has zero unsightly breaches leads me to think it's not because she has a vagina. There are plenty of ugly fem trolls.
>>
>>46487459

It's not like the default dermal deposits are insanely heavy it's just that Laubenstein drew them that way in early editions.

When you keep in mind that the dermal plating is fairly minimal overall I think you can accept Eiger being on the light side of dermal deposits.

Maybe most of hers are on her forearms, shins and shoulders.
>>
>>46487268
I like to think social issues play a part in the shortened lifespan for Orks and Trolls. They tend to be the most persecuted of the metatypes, and usually live more in ghetto areas.

>>
>>46487490

I think the orks have litters got a silent retcon.

I still have them with an increased rate of twins but other parts of the old school goblinoids I've toned down.

In general though I'd say that when they reach puberty which is probably around 9-10 they get flooded with a fuckton of hormones (HGH, testosterone, estrogen in females). These hormones accentuate body mass and muscle growth but the high levels of hormones also tend to cause some cognitive development issue and rage issues.

Think about it if you are a human teacher and your 6th grade class suddenly has a large number of 200+ lbs ragemonster + teenage fuckbunny issues.

Tons of discipline issue lead to most orks getting more or less kicked out of formal education or sent into vocational training programs.

By the time that Ork mental and emotional development catches up with their physical development the damage has already been done.

Military service is actually pretty decent for many Orks.
Sure it's a comparatively massive chunk of your life, but they treat you well enough, you're off the street, and they accept you from a young age when the education system has abandoned you.

Sure it's not a scientific degree, but do you want your life to be more than half over before you're qualified?

4e keeps the litters still in place. When they don't have 6 kid, its usually 2 or 3 kids.

well, the average age for girls to hit puberty is 10.5 years as of 2010. i think 8 to 9 would be average for orks. The rage monsters prolly would be girls, while the fuck bunnies would be the boys.

Usually their pack mentality leads to arrests.

Yep, they probably don't take the worst discipline cases but if you are relatively smart and decent at keeping you rage and sex issue under control orks make for ideal troopers.

I actually make Orks be a disproportionate part of most militaries (corp included) because they are buff as fuck and relatively expendable and really you just have to give them body armor an assault rifle and some combat drugs.

Officers still tend to be humans because most Orks can't get into military academies or officer training school.

The Japanocorps are some of the major exceptions as they are racist as fuck but even then I have them using cannon fodder units from Gomi Island on occasion.
>>
>>46487924
Yomi hasn't been a prison island since 2062 though
>>
>>46487824

Also keep in mind that Orks are commonly SINless so they often can't even get into schools because a lot of school administrators are closeted humanis scum.

It's typically better on tribal lands but even then orks tend to be distrusted.

In general though Trolls just get treated like they are bigger, dumber orks by most people as they are rare enough that they don't have much culture.

You have to understand that I am also very new to the setting as a whole, but my understanding was most vehicle that are widely available were all electric? Is the combustion engine still in use by people other than rich people with more money than sense?

I would say, trying to rationalize what is essentially what I am trying to play off as an irrational dislike, that electric and by extention hybrid, assuming its gasoline and electric hybrid, engines are so much quieter than combustion, so a run can go so much smoother if you can deploy closer to your team closer to the operation zone than by cruising around in a barking muscle car.

Not a terribly good reason as its something I just never thought about it.

I suggest a change to the rules regarding firearms:

>single shot; straight DV, no penalty to hit
>semi-auto burst; +3 DV, -3 penalty to pool
>short burst; +3 DV, -4 penalty to pool
>long burst; +4 DV, -5 penalty to pool
>full auto 6 round burst; +4 DV, -5 penalty to pool
>full auto 10 round burst; +5 DV, -6 penalty to pool

Burst and full auto makes it actually harder to hit, not easier. But if you do hit, the target takes more damage, since more rounds hit him.

Yes he's retarded, but we can fix that. When he says you need skulljacks to interface with electronics, what he's trying to say is that you need a DNI, a Direct-Neural-Interface, which is a connection between the brain’s neural impulses and a computer system that allows a user to mentally interact with that system. If you get a Datajack you get a DNI, but there are easier ways like trodes if you don't want cyber.

Here's what the book has to say on page 222 in the core: A direct neural interface, or DNI, connects your brain to electronic devices. Direct neural interface (along with a sim module) is required for VR use, but DNI is also useful for AR in that you don’t need any additional gear like earbuds or an image link to see or hear augmented reality objects. How do you sign up? You get DNI by wearing trodes, or having an implanted datajack, commlink, or cyberdeck. And if you’re using a sim module along with your DNI, you can get a sort of “super AR mode” where you can also feel, smell, and taste your AR experience.

The current defense dicepools would make firing bursts stupid because you'd miss almost all the time.

The idea of bursts are for spray and pray action where you fill the area with bullets and for the most part most of them miss but there is basically no way that you aren't hitting something.

Tight bursts are simulated with the brain blaster action in R&G

So I've got some questions about HMHVV, its strains, and how normies will react when they see them.

First of all, I understand that HMHVV is transmitted through any sort of trade in bodily fluids. Would something like a scratch that draws blood still be able to possibly transmit it?

Other than differences in the sub-species, what is the difference between Strain I and Strain II?

Lastly, what is the general populace's opinions and/or reactions towards HMHVV infected and carriers?

If anyone has anything else to add that would be important that I didn't ask, please tell me before I decide whether or not to make an Infected.

Slightly related, my GM is the same as the Anon above who asked about "Skulljacks."

You can get Sorcery up to 7, and specialize in Illusion for another +2, and if you have enough for some Edge, that can provide a reroll of any non-hit dice, which is pretty damn good when you have such a large dice pool.

Howdy everybody, I'm back with another question.

For a face, Should I put points in skills by themselves or should I group them all?
>>
>>46494387
Just one autist sperging out I think.
>>
>>46494687

Priority/Sum-to-10: You'll only be using skill groups for your main skills if you take Skills at Priority A or B. You might consider not taking them as groups so you can more easily take Specializations for your favorite skills.

Karmagen: If you want all the skills in a group, it is more efficient to buy the group. You tend to only want 2/3 of any group, though - so it ends up being a wash. Especially for things like Close Combat or Firearms, there's lots of redundancy.
>>
>>46494741
I took my skills as Priority A, Due to another poster saying it was most important for a face to have so much.

This is what they said to get/do/go Go Skills A,
get the Acting and Influence Groups at 5, grab Intimidate, Disguise and a ranged skill,
max your Charisma
grab Tailored Pheromones 3 or Alphaware Tailored Pheromones 2.
Also invest in First Impression or Blandness and grab more than two Languages
>>
>>46494796

Yeah, that's pretty solid advice.

If you want to be more of a liar, take Acting 6 and Influence 4. Conversely, if you want to be less of a liar, you can take Influence 6 and Acting 4.

You should end up with ~14-16 dice in each social skill that way. Which should be plenty. And then you can spend the rest of your skills on combat stuff, or maybe spellcasting stuff if you're a shaman/face.

>>
>>46494857
First time with the group, So I'm staying as far away as possible from Spellcasting/techno bullshit.

What combat weapons are usually the best for all around purpose in 5E? I plan on getting 4 pistols and a shit ton of bioware.

We have a crazy Shaman bug thing though...
>>
>>46494870

5e isn't clear about what it looks like. I'd assume it's still the same as in 4e, where it was basically yakuza chic with more spikes.
Personally, I imagine it as a Hawaiian-print zoot suit with spikes and obligatory chain necklaces.

>>46494902

Automatics is the most versatile firearm skill.

It gives you concealable options with machine pistols, cheap general-purpose SMG's, and Assault Rifles for when things get serious.

Pistols is never truly high-damage and has really short range, but the options are mostly all legal and all concealable.

Longarms gives access to Shotguns which are good and Sniper Rifles which can be amazingly effective.

Melee skills either require high strength to be effective, or necessitate the use of weapons like Stun Batons, Monofilament Whips, or Shock Gloves that don't care about your Strength.

I love Unarmed with Shock Gloves, personally.

Your GM is allowing a PC bug shaman? I weep for your group.
>>
>>46494902
Everyone swears by automatics but I prefer long arms because Shotguns are OP (throw a long barrel, customized grip, smart link; or for concealability sawed off barrel/stock under a cloak) and you can use sniper rifles.

>>46495030
Really now? Isn't that unfair?
>>
>>46494902
Grab Automatics as skill. It offers you the most options.

Steyr TMP offers the best compromise of firepower, concealability and legality.

If concealment isn't a problem, go for an assault rifle. FN HAR if you have to stay legal, Ares Alpha if you just need to fuck things up.
>>
>>46494870
Yakuza-chic is suits and/or loud shirts.

Sleeping Tiger was/is trog rock + corporate fusion.
>>
>>46495159

If you've got the spare skill points, taking both Pistols and Longarms will let you have effective concealable weapons while also being able to pull out the big guns if you need to deal with something really tough.

Automatics is the skill-point efficient choice, since the same skill handles machine pistols for your concealed-carry and assault rifles for heavy-hitting. They're the middle of the road choices - Holdout Pistols win concealment, Tasers win legality, Sniper Rifles win range and damage, but Automatics can do a solid job at everything.

I wouldn't call shotguns OP, but they can hit hard, potentially hit multiple targets, and reduce enemy dodge pools. Real nice overall. There's even some full-auto and burst-fire versions that are basically impossible to dodge.
>>
Are there sections in one of the books for pre-made enemies, or.. how do we handle that?

>>46495159
>How bad are we looking at a first timer with Bug Shaman?
Considering he will literally have to stick goddamn bug monsters into living people, and what happened in Bugtown, I would say it's a very, very bad idea.

At least a ghoul could just eat criminals and people he already killed on the job. A bug shaman by his very nature is trying to destroy the world. It is also a very bad tradition for a PC, since it's... well, incredibly powerful.
>>
>>46496183
His known to betray people in all his groups for shits and giggles, I'll watch him closely.

Also, Can anybody help explain this example to me. Taro has Escape Artist 6 and Agility 5. His threshold to escape from the cuffs is 3. He rolls 11 dice (6 + 5) scoring exactly 3 hits!

How did he score only 3 hits when he got an 11?
>>
>>46496219
His dice pool is 11 (from the 6 Escape Artist and 5 Agility). This means that he rolls 11 D6. A standard success is 5 or 6, and threshold 3, means he needs 3 hits (rolling a 5 or 6) on 11 D6.

Also Bug Shaman is a massive red flag and you should probably talk him into playing a different character.
>>
>>46496219
Seriously, talk to the GM. A Bug Shaman is not only overpowered as fuck, it is quite literally a dude whose end goal is to kill the entire party. If he at least was just Toxic he could play it as some kind of eco-terrorist luddite.

Hi /tg/, GM here,

my Group is at the moment on the metaplane of the nordic religion. (Don't ask, I bend the rules, so they all could go there with their physical bodys).
Perhaps they will be able to come back to the real world in the near future.
Would you send them back to where they entered the metaplane? (In this case the Färöer islands.) Or somwhere completly different? Perhaps a place of importance for the religion?
Would you have the time move at the same speed as in meatspace or would it be different? I could imagine 2 seconds after they left (in this case, they are fucked) or 1 Month for every day they were in the metaplane?

What would be a fun thing for you to experience as a player?

To cough blood you need a damaged lung. Lungcancer would be nice.

Hoi, quick question:

Why would I want my drones (or my RCC) running an Electronic Warfare autosoft? I haven't played yet so I don't know.

But reading through the books I can't think of any circumstance I wouldn't just use my own EW skill.
>>
>>46484462
>Being able to brick everyone's weapons at the drop of a hat would make sammies fucking useless
Bricking a weapon is only useful if their gun is triggerless.

You can still shoot a bricked gun, and open a bricked door. It says so as per RAW.
>>
>>46497062
If you have a low EW skill. Or if you get shot and your pal has to log into your RCC and there's enemy deckers and they need to keep your drones online oh my god how do you keep these things in the air THEY'RE SHOOTING AT US SPIRITS ON A FUCKING STICK
>>
>>46497062
As a precaution. There may come a time when you won't be able to use your own skill. It's not a high priority, but it's nice to have for those moments when you can't jump in directly, same as any autosoft.
>>
>>46497062
Due to sensor array shenanigans, electronic warfare autosoft is effectively clearsight autosoft plus plus. Exactly how useful the extra EW abilities are to pilot programs is questionable, but there's no reason not to not take it.
>>
>>46497062
A basic drone doesn't really have uses for the EW skill. But if you mod its electronics as to give it a Sleaze attribute, it can then use the "Hide" matrix action to get back invisible in the virtual world.
>>
How good are spirits at technical things?

If I contract a spirit under orders to get a high score at a local arcade, how would that go down?

Mine was a blonde elf bitch with a sword.

>>
>>46497734
Given that magic explicitly doesn't gel with tech, I'd say it would end up pretty horribly. Add to this that the spirit comes from a metaplane that probably doesn't have any electronics.
>>
>>46497825
I am more certain than ever that I have to abuse my magical powers to make this happen.
>>
>>46497452
See >>46497335. Whilst a regular drone might not need EW, it can stand in for Perception or Clearsight on any drone, and does other stuff as well. Hell, I plan on buying some drones with mods for matrix stealth (add a rating and up it by three) specifically so I can slap EW, Maneuvering and Stealth onto them and have little sneak bots capable of breaking into places for me. They'll be damned expensive, but they'll do the job.
>>
>>46497873

that would be up to who sent them back; a Norse god would do business very differently than a hag living in a forest of iron and ice.

>Would you have the time move at the same speed as in meatspace or would it be different?
time-wise, i treat all metaplane's as no different from the rest of astral space. 1sec in there is 1sec in here.

>What would be a fun thing for you to experience as a player?

Rude.
>>
>>46497958
>and does other stuff as well
No it doesn't. Unless you mod your drone to have a Sleaze attribute, there is no difference whatsoever between the applications of an EW or Clearsight autosoft.
>>
>>46499016
If you're running it on an RCC, it can be given to drones, which means you only need one of the drones on the RCC to be modded to have a Sleaze rating to use it as a signal interceptor or an Attack rating to use it as a jammer (which, I believe, stacks with any jammers you mount on the thing)
>>
>>46498736
It makes it a bit easier for me, yes.
>>46498271
Chummer's implementation of the new armour modding isn't what you'd call ideal. Whole thing's a bit of a clusterfuck as far as the rules go though.
>>
>>46496275
>A Bug Shaman is not only overpowered as fuck

The rest is true, but they're really not overpowered in practice - they can hardly ever actually use their spirits for anything.

As soon as a single recording of their summoning gets loose, they and the rest of the party are slapped with a massive bounty and the rest of the game becomes quite exciting, briefly.

So really they'd just be using regular spells for the most part, while building up a hive in Redmond or Puyallup.
>>
>>46499699
>signal interceptor

You need a mark to use Snoop. What are you going to do, hack the target's (master) and Spoof Command/Control Device it into inviting a mark from your drone?

>jammer
Meh... Could work if you load it on a modded drone directly. Although you'd need a way to communicate with the damn thing that doesn't rely on the Matrix. Two hits on the Jam Signal test and it effectively cuts its own wireless off. (Which would be hilarious if the EW soft was loaded on a RCC, since the drone would jam itself out of the instructions how to jam.)
>>
>>46497734

Depends what that involves.

If it's an AR or VR arcade, then unless the spirit is a possession spirit it has no way to interact without careful custom design of an interface that registers to astral vision.

Otherwise, you go for a Task or Guardian spirit, and they'd probably do okay as long as you explain things well. Voodoo is good for this kind of thing.

They'd need to look human though, or they'll cause a fuss.

>>

Yeah. Personally I interpreted it as follows:

1 Mod Point = 3 Armour Points
Without taking penalties, you can get up to 3x your body.
Each 3 armour above your default armour consumes a mod point.
You pay full price as if you had replaced the whole armour, though.

I suppose we'll need to wait for the official statement by whoever actually wrote this.
>>
>>46500105

>If you have sleaze, you can Hack On The Fly to get that one mark.

You (as the rigger using the RCC) can have your RCC mark a target if it is modded for Sleaze/Stealth, yes. But it's your drone that will need one mark if you want it to Snoop while you're doing something else.

Question about loup-garous: Just how extensive is their physical transformation? We talking full-scale wolfman in permanent state, or just a bit of extra body hair, claws and sharper teeth - at least up until the lunar cycle, and THEN they wolf out altogether?

Just sorta pondering on it in so far as the idea of a character who is a loup-garou perhaps being able to hide what they are by doing stuff like shaving or waxing, and a bit of regular manicure/dentistry.
>>
>>46500855

That depends.

How ruinous is leonization to your skin? Is it like full complete rejuvenation or is it like botox and face stapling?

Cause the latter means his whole body feels like a vinyl floor.
>>
>>46500856
We're talking visage with lupine traits, elongated ears, fingers turning into claws and weirdly bending legs.

It might be doable to hide it with some effort, but it's an "always wearing the mask" kind of effort.
>>
>>46500902
That's what I was wondering about, yeah. Whether it was something you could hide overall, like being a vampire, up until the lunar cycle, or if you were pretty much fucked the same way ghouls are.
>>
>>46500902
The legs don't actually bend, the ankle just extends and shin shrinks. Four-legged species actually step on their toes.

I think wolf shifters are where you get Howling-face. I might be wrong though.
>>
>>46500943
In-between both those extremes, I'd say. You should be able to pass off for fully human with a hoodie, gloves, loose clothes and a breathing mask. (Except those moments where you go berzerk and better chain yourself up in a basement.)

>>
>>46501031
>>46500955
>>46500902
I'm not seeing anything on the legs. Loup-garou are permanently hairy and borderline berserk for a few days each month, but they don't physically change after being infected.

Wolf shifters are wolves that can turn human in the span of about 3 seconds.
>>
>>46501191

Keep in mind that mod culture has lead to certain populations (the ones that tend to run with Runners) have lead to a lot of bizarre freaks with fucked up faces and a well shaved loup garou could potentially be passed off as a particularly ugly Ork. Add to that a decent disguise skill with a nice make up kit and you could probably pass with only occasional concerned glances. If you were feeling dangerous you might go to a nice area's Starbucks and order a small soykaf and see how long it takes for a grass eater to call the police on you.

So does anyone think there might be some Toxic Bug Totems out there? I mean, if a Toxic Totem or the likes is sort of something that inverts or subverts the original meaning or ideals of a Spirit and their intended purpose, and Bug Spirits are all about that whole 'for the hive', collective mentality.. would a Toxic Bug Spirit be some kind of Bug that actively rebels against the rest of its kind for whatever reason?

Following that train of thought, might a Toxic Bug Spirit and a (meta)human host thus be something that is more of a parasitic/symbiotic relationship rather than the one where the Bug Spirit guzzles up the host's soul or dumps it out to wear them like a flesh suit? Thus resulting in some kind of hybrid insectoid/humanoid entity that would probably fuck up bugs and non-bugs alike.

..And then make it an adept.

The Odd Mods section of Data Trails is a bit fuzzy on what you can do it to. (It just says devices, so that should include RCCs, some clothes, some drinks, and your cyberware.)

5e describes them as such:

The transformation is often a brutal one; many loup-garou are left in a feral state, but this is not universal. Physically, the victim is considerably changed. Ears become elongated, the nostrils flare and are more pronounced, the lips draw back from sharpened teeth. The canines are particularly pronounced, and the fingernails harden into claws.

Dunno where the legs thing came from, though. But even then, it's enough to warrant camouflage.

Thing is Cordysep Spirits sound like a great thing but as a base fungal thing with a very simple role if such a creature did exist it would probably work to infect the host and spread the infestation further.

One could fluff the fungus as the end result of Corruption by a Toxic Spirit and it would still kinda make sense (although Fungus isn't really one of the Pollutants that are known).

Instead the assumption would be that a spirit's corruption would result in what we would closest relate to Cordysep, in the same way that Bug Spirits aren't really Bug Spirits but other world monsters that seem to move and act and spread in the same manner as real world bugs.

However, importantly, what I refer to as Cordysep Spirits would not, in >>46501431 suggestion, be just a rebel against the Hive.

In true toxic spirit fashion it would still be an aggressively dangerous and violent entity bent on corrupting everyone and thing it touches. In fact, it's aggressiveness might directly amplify the aggressive nature of the Bug Spirit, leading to a spirit monster that would be the literal worst of both worlds.

So it would still be an awful idea to be a Cordysep Mage. It might start out like Mantis Mages but in days you'd have Seattle swarming with an airborne fungal spray and you'd be using innocent people as vessels for them.

And just like Cordyseps you'd all end up dead.

Anyone else feel annoyed by how much overlap there is in skills? Con, impersonate, disguise; survival, tracking; the million mechanics and driving skills; firearms...

They have a specialisation system in place that could cover a lot of them. Medical (first aid); Firearms (long weapons); Con (Impersonation).

It's exactly like move silently and hide in previous D&D editions where everyone just houseruled them as stealth.
>>
>>46503352
>It's exactly like move silently and hide in previous D&D editions where everyone just houseruled them as stealth.

Which doesn't help much when you need to know if you're moving silently or hidden from view - because invisibility is technically a massive hide bonus.

Oversimplification is just as bad.

The real problem is that skills remain overpriced, and 5e doubled the range of possible skill to keep players being shit compared to canon snowflakes.
>>
>>46503352
The part of it that annoys me is 'ware/powers being specific on what skills they help with.

For example, facial sculpt helps you be someone else, as long as you're not trying to be someone specific.
>>
>>46503404
But then again, SR 5E DOES combine move silently and hiding into stealth.

I don't agree with oversimplification, but it flat out doesn't make sense that a master impersonator wouldn't be able to disguise himself.
>>
>>46503467
I'm pretty sure that it will help you look like somebody specific, but it won't help you act like that specific person.

So while it aids disguise, it doesn't do much for Impersonation.
>>
>>46503555

Well, it should give you circumstancial bonuses to your rolls, since you physically look like the person.
>>
>>46503526
Disguise and impersonation are different skills though.
Impersonation is talking, walking, moving, like a specific person.
Disguise is being able to make yourself look like something you're not.
There are specific rules for the two being used at the same time, in that you can use impersonation to bolster a disguise, but either can stand alone.
>>
>>46503711
That's basically what Disguise + Impersonate does. You get to add together the successes on both the Disguise rolls and the Impersonate rolls to make it much, much more difficult to see through your ruse.

So if you've got Facial Sculpt + Intuition as most of your Disguise pool, you'll probably get a few hits, and those add on to your Impersonation + Charisma roll's hits to make it harder to see through.
>>
>>46503711
You can use disguise to boost an impersonation roll and vice versa.
If you've got a disguise that looks like someone and you are acting like that someone, you can do both a Disguise+Intuition for the initial disguise, and then a Impersonation+Charisma for when you interact with someone, and add the hits together for the opposed test against their perception.
SR5, pg 136
>>
>>46503781
Fair enough, but it still overlaps with con.
>>
>>46503911
And I'd say that the overlap is why they're in the same skill group, but the differences in application are why they're different skills.
>>
>>46503911
To a degree, but con is mostly just convincing someone you are telling the truth, while impersonation is mimicking mannerisms, posture, gait, etc
Both are similar, and as such they fall under the same skill group.
>>
>>46503974
But skill groups are supposed to share similarities, it's why you can advance them as a group.

I appreciate that they're trying to prevent characters from becoming masters of all, and that the whole grouping system would break if I just started combining things, but I still think some streamlining is in order. It's very counter-intuitive and skills overlap
>>
>>46504218
Perhaps a houserule of allowing characters to use skills in the same group, at a -2 (or maybe half their rating) penalty would fix the issue, so you can feel your way through with a sniper if you're good with a rifle, but you're not going to be as good as the guy who is skilled with both snipers and rifles.
>>

Then again, not using the weapon for which you have speciality already confers a -2 dice pool.

I'm not sure what you mean, having a specialty in something gives you a +2 in that one specific thing, not a -2 to everything else, the +2 is the exception, not the rule.

Upon thinking a bit more half ranks seems pretty extreme since people could just max out one thing at 6 and effectively get 12 skillpoints out of it, maybe something like Ranks/3 round down.
>>
>>46504282
That's pretty much what p 130 says.

>>46504341
I'm not sure where you get that.
>>
>>46504389
>>46504384

Well compared to when you are using the weapon you have specialisation with, you do effectively run at a 2 dice penalty.

...Are you fucking retarded? There's a difference between a specialty granting a bonus, and saying that using something that is not a specialty is a -2 penalty. Everyone and their mother will use the base die pool and then add modifiers, they don't pick one arbitrary modifier and declare that the standard. I can't tell if you made a mistake and are furiously backpedaling, or if you really just don't understand the rules.
>>
>>46504667

Not using a weapon you're specialised in is effectively gimping yourself.
>>
>>46504689
What if you have no specialization for that skill? Do you really think that you then are gimped in all of them, instead of thinking that you are equally good in all of them?
>>
>>46504559
And compared to when you aren't using a weapon you have brand loyalty, a specialisation with, two optimized cyberlimbs for, and 3 ranks of "improved ability" you get a -7 penalty
That's retarded logic, you don't speak in the general for specific instances.
For example, you say "That man makes 30,000 more dollars every year than average" you don't say "The average yearly pay is 30,000 less than what that man makes every year"
>>
>>46504735
Yes.
>>
>>46504796
So why not calculate the absolute maximum dicepool for any skill, and describe your skills as "I only have a -4 penalty in this skill but in this one I have a -14 penalty!"
It's retarded to describe from the optimum instead of from the baseline.
>>
You guys ever wonder if shadowrun is just... a little too on the nose? I mean it's conceptually dnd crossed with cyberpunk. But then mechnically it's like dnd crossed with cyberpunk. It just... too perfectly concepted.
>>
So, ignoring the big semantic argument above, and whatever >>46504828 is on (even though it seems to be good stuff)

I'd say that using a different skill should probably only give a one or two die penalty if they're in the same skill group (as a generality), because Artisan and Disguise are really, really different skills.

Although if you have Artisan as a chef, that makes the book's example really hilarious.
>>
>>46504818

It's simpler to write down the dicepools. And when comparing spec weapon against something else, I would be at a net loss of 2 dice. How is this a difficult concept for you?
>>
>>46504956
I dunno, you need to balance skill ranks to actually be worth it.
If you just make it a 1 or 2 die penalty, Why not just grab 6 dice in each skill group and effectively get a rank 5/4 in every skill?

>>46505006
You do not describe edge cases as general, because they are edge cases.
Getting a specialty in something gives you a +2 to a specific scenario, it does not raise the rank of your skill by 2 and give you a -2 in all other situations, which is what you describe. While they are functionally the same one is far less obtuse and easy for anyone to understand.
>>
>>46505006
Because while mathematically true, it's not semantically or interpredly true.

In short, the presentation of a specialty isn't "I take this and am worse at everything else" it's "I take this and am better at this one thing."

Mathematically, they're the same, but the presentation isn't, and the psychology isn't.

>>46505072
Because if you have 6 in each skill group you've got 6 in an overwhelming majority of skills?

But assuming you meant grab six dice in one skill from each group, the reason would be that the GM might say that going across a skill group might not apply in that circumstance or possibly at all.

Like, while the GM might let you cover the 'hiding a small thing' aspect of Palming with a good disguise, the GM might also say that no amount of disguise skill lets you take something of another person.
>>
>>46505162

You being worse at everything else is kind of true, because you do lose one point that could have gone towards something else.

But my point was that when comparing apples to apples, ie 'I wanna geek this guy with firearms, how do I make him most dead', the answer would be most of the time 'with the gun I'm specialised in'. However, sometimes it is worth it to use something else and lose... or NOT GET the +2 dice bonus because of circumstances or other concerns.

Giving additional penalties is redundant.
>>
>>46505317
Like I said, it's mathematically true. But there's more than just mathematics. Like, the thing that started this whole thing going looked like he was saying that a specialty gave you a -2 penalty when not using a gun you've got a specialty in.

In the mathematical sense, yes, you are losing two dice and that could be considered a penalty, but because of the presentation of how specialties work it's not a penalty. It's lack of a bonus.

And to hammer it home, while they're mathematically the same, they're not the same presentation or interpretation wise.

How is Shadowrun for whimsical (read: silly) magical artifacts? Is this something that turns up from time to time, or no? I'm thinking 4th world magician/douche makes prank items that made it into the 6th.
>>
>>46505317
Yeah, you lose the +2 bonus, since it's a misc modifier that applies to your baseline, which is always, come hell or highwater, [Attribute + Skill Rank].
The reason using things relative to a base is so that you can get a good idea of how something will apply in the majority of situations, and specializations are explicitly for special cases.
So if you use your specialized thing, you get a +2 bonus, if not, you lose the +2 bonus and use your baseline, with all other modifiers.
When comparing specific cases, using "I get +X with this option, but the other offers extra bonuses while not giving me +X/the bonus" would be easier for everyone to understand.

There's mention of an artifact that is the deck of many things in everything but name, scattered across the globe.
Rare and ancient magical artifacts are a thing, but they are rare and very sought after.

>4th world magician/douche

The first thing that comes to mind is Fucker In Face Paint, who is both a magician and a colossal douche.
