Librarian surfing up the rock or down the rock?
I planned it as up, but having messed about with it I'm now leaning towards down.
>>46373905
down looks better, but I think it's a bit too steep.

also, damn found that one after moving into my new apartment, totally forgot I had it, need to finish it
Without using an airbrush, how do I do osl glow around small areas, like glowing eyes?
I want to do an orange glow on eyes for some of my models, paricularly get that orange reflection on the eye's surrounding areas, instead of just painting the eyes bright orange.
>>46374262
i usually use a sponge, not the best thing but better than nothing
how do i paint a good light blue ?
>>46374262
The #1 mistake people make when trying OSL for the first time is making the light-colour too dark, nothing looks worse than some really dark reds or blues as osl.
The best way to avoid it, is to just paint the miniature normally, perhaps slightly darker overall than you normally would, and then just start layering really, really watered down white where you want to glow, essentially painting the glow but with white. Then you just wash it with the colour you want the glow to be in.
It's the absolutely easiest way to make it look like not shit, since it's way, way simpler than trying to perfectly blend all the transitions between the light colour and the colour of the miniature. This way all you need to do is blend white with the miniature, then wash the light.
>>46374262
>Without using an airbrush, how do I do osl glow around small areas, like glowing eyes?
The trick to OSL is to not use an airbrush. So, you're on the right path.
>>46374262
use glazes around the area. Remember that the source should be brighter than the "reflected light".
>>46374501
How would i do an orange glaze? GW has lamenters yellow and bloodletter. should i make my own? how would I go about doing that?
>>46374538
You can do a sort of glaze by watering down regular paint.
>>46374665
I wouldn't try that, the consistency would be really hard to get right, especially for somebody with no experience with glazes.
>>46373905
I say if his hand is palm up having him on the upwards slope. but if you can make his hand palm down and sorta at a 45 degree andgle then down would look sweet
>>46373961
hey what is that orange color paint recipe? Sometimes i don't have the balls to use flesh tones on things that arent flesh, but then they often end up creating cool effects like this one, as opposed to using a pure orange.
>>46375085
>hey what is that orange color paint recipe?
Just this, except I added another layer of Ratskin after Reikland fleshshade
Any of you anons have a guide on how to paint a power weapon with green lightning bolt effects ?
>>46374433

http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/100431-painting-nihms-lightning-guide-quick-and-dirty/
>>46375841
There's no right or wrong way. I mean it's not even exactly clear what the coils on the plasma gun are. So paint them whatever you like. Copy a piece of artwork you like or something. And how gravity guns are supposed to work is anyone's guess. So sure there could be glowy bits involved. Don't ask me if they are part of the science or a casemod though.
>>46375841
plasma blue, gravgun green
>>46374753
Assembled this guy by-the-numbers, the hand part is grooved to only fit in one orientation (without filing/sanding, which would make his arm weirdly shorter) and I'm already doing enough conversion work on my biker libby.
I think objection to surfing up, having looked at it, is that he's then staring off into space while casting, which would be fine for a chaos sorcerer or similar but feels off for a libby.
Surfing down feels a bit more like he's staring at the next contestant while casting (which feels a bit more appropriate considering he'll be rolling biomancy all day erry day).
>>46376520
Fuck, I have no green paints.

okay anons, I will post two of my nurgle Chaos lords, and I need your help in deciding which one to use.
This also determines what color-scheme I will paint the rest of my forces as.

>>46377600
And here is the second.
I like them both, but for varied reasons.
>>46377600
>>46377626
i prefer the first by far , to me the second one seems like more of a bodyguard than a lord
>>46377597
Thanks.
Yeah I kind of agree.
It's the same "wild" hairstyles across 100 marines mean that there are like 15 or so of each head. Going to have to vary hair colour a lot to give variation otherwise it looks like they are clones.
That's acceptable with just bald heads, but looks daft when it's a load of guys with the same punk hair in the same windswept pose...
If there were more simple long hair, pony tails and like short spikey / scraggly hair then they'd be generic enough to just look like an average common haircut.
>>46377600
Fug, this guy looks amazing. He definitely gets my vote. The second guy looks cool too, and I really like the interaction between the terminator cape and the blightking armor, but his legs look kind of stubby, he doesn't look particularly 40k outside of one arm, and the color isn't as nice. Former is way better, and a fantastic start to a warband.
>>46377600
This guy. Second still looks great, but this one blows him out of the water tbqh
>>46377600
I prefer this mini. If he's not a lord, he makes a fucking cool champion.

It's not the resolution that's the issue it's .png being several MB when they don't need to be. Just convert them to jpg.
By keeping it a png now you have a needlessly large (albeit still very small in file size) image with a too small resolution.
>>46380306
>sergeant
>no back banner
WHAT ARE YOU DOING?
>>46380632
6 MB literally won't immediately load even on the fastest American networks.
You should never have to see an image scan on your screen even if it only takes 2 seconds. This isn't the 90's with 56K.
Fuck off, nobody cares about your pooly photographed, un-resized, needlessly huge png images. There's a reason every single person with an image over 3 MB is also a shit photographer, because the people who actually know how to take a good photo with proper lighting and display also do post-editing.
You can't even name a reason the file should be a png or that large to begin with other than your own incompetence.
>>46380650
At this point I'm gonna say if you want everyone to change their images for you, make an easily postable guide like pic related.
Otherwise you just rely on everyone being a regular who knows that SOMEONE will lose their shit if they post a .png and will know exactly what you want instead.

Question.
If I give a heavy weapon to a tactical marine, I still need to put the backpack on him to complete the weapon. How could I show that he's in a tactical squad and not a devastator squad beyond where he is on the table?
Hey /wip/. I'm starting the Plague Toads w/Riders kit, and can't seem to get the release agent off. I've washed the parts with soap and water 3x, and they are still very shiny, feel greasy, and I applied a bit of brush on primer to a few flat surfaces as a test, and it isnt sticking.
I once read that when faced with this problem, to spray it with varnish before priming. I have a bottle of vallejo satin varnish, and some testors dullcoat. I'm reluctant to do this though, because I dont understand why/if it would work - and varnish isnt designed to do what primer does.
Any advice on getting the release agent off, or using varnish to get a surface?
>>46382887
If it's a codex chapter, his squad designation will ID him as a tactical marine (tactical marines have the upward-pointing arrow, while devs have the explosion-looking symbol).
>>46382964
Oh right, the transfers. I really should get to putting those on.
>>46382887
>Don't use devastator legs, keep him as "tactical marine with heavy weapon" rather than a guy with all the proper gear.
>Obviously if your chapter uses a modified scheme for devastators (such as blood angels blue helmets), don't paint him with that.
>Paint the tactical squad pauldron trims the colour of a company that doesn't have any devastators.
>Paint a tactical squad marking on his left pauldron as well, denoting he's a member of a tactical squad
That should cover it.

>>46384165
Most space marines have their capes right next to their heat vents, and have long hair right in front of their jump pack intake.
At least GW isn't stupid enough to put capes on jump pack HQs.
>>46384214
Use white spraypaint for priming. It's easier to do white techniques on white instead of black or grey.
I just got my first batch of models ever. Never painted anything in my life. My girl got me the brushes and paints. Should I attempt using them?
The chick selling me the models said to use Reaper, Citadel or Game paints. Citadel particularly for reds and metallics.
Also what other materials should I look into getting before getting started? My buddy was telling me to get a sponge and tupperware to keep my paints wet.

You can make a ghetto wet palette using a sponge or paper towels and parchment paper with a tupperware, which helps immensely in stopping your stuff from drying out, so your buddy is right on.
I personally like Vallejo Model colors, but nothing wrong with Citadel or Reaper (I'm more of a historicals type). What are you planning on painting up?
>>46384348
Don't use Testors for anything but matte varnish. You want acrylic paints that are popular with scale modelers and wargamers.
Vallejo, Citadel, Reaper, Privateer Press, Scalecolor, Tamiya acrylics, Army Painter are all fine choices with good pigments for miniatures.
You'll also want better brushes, or a cake of Master's Brush Cleaner to shape those cheapo Testor brushes into proper sharp points.
>>46384430
I did not know such a thing as this brush cleaner existed. Thank you, friend.

Hmmm... I wouldn't use those on your models, anon, even though they are acrylic. Keep the brushes, though. You will find even awful plastic brushes have their uses.
>The chick selling me the models said to use Reaper, Citadel or Game paints. Citadel particularly for reds and metallics.
She's right. Paints made specifically for miniatures will work much better than craft paint, and depending on how you use it, better than most of those meant for fine-scale military modeling (although there is some cross-pver there).
>Also what other materials should I look into getting before getting started? My buddy was telling me to get a sponge and tupperware to keep my paints wet.
Your buddy wants you to build a wet palette, anon. You'll need baking paper/parchment to do that right. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96mjmqWTPfM
Get yourself some better brushes. You can start by taking a "40% off one item" to your nearest Michaels craft store and getting a small set of nice beginners' brushes. You'll want a sharp hobby knife for cutting models and scraping off mold lines; to go with that, you might need a cutting mat or piece of board if you don't want to damage your work surface. A good pair of small clippers for removing parts from the sprue is valuable as well. Testors also makes good affordable plastic cement, which I don't see in your picture. That's about the bare minimum. Other things you should pick up along the way:
>Wooden toothpicks for applying a tiny amount of glue or paint to hard-to-reach places
>Very small drill/pin vise with very small drill bits, and a box of paperclips to pin your models together if need be
>Set of needle files for removing unsightly fingz frum yer ladz
>Bright desk lamp on an adjustable arm
>Brush soap, for taking care of your nicer brushes once you acquire them

A good X-acto with a metal handle and replaceable blades would be ideal. Beware cheap-o alternatives with plastic handles. The last thing you want is a plastic handle to snap and fling half the hobby knife toward something valuable like your eyes.
>I have thin plastic cutting boards from Ikea, would those do well?
They probably would, if they're the ones I'm thinking of. You just don't want to be cutting into the surface of a nicely finished desk. Me? I have a 3/8" wooden board that I can wreck up (pictured in >>46384686), and all it's protecting is a cheap-ass table-and-legs that I bought at our favourite Swedish furniture store.
>>46384999
Using breakfluid is a good option provided yoi dont expose the model for too long.
>>46385179
I'm living off ikea furniture so nothing is really worth keeping in excellent condition, but it would be nice not to get splinters all over the place.
What kind of brush should I be looking for? I'm not sure what qualifies as good or not.
>>46384897
That's not what I said. There is no good reason except for you're lazy and won't resize. You're also too lazy and incompetent to set your configuration to not save as .png.

Upgrade your internet service, anon. It's 2012+4.
So how is this for a new airbrush painter: http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Multi-Purpose-Airbrush-Master-Compressor/dp/B003ZWIZD4
Ignore the paints and extraneous shit, I'm mostly looking at the compressor and the airbrush. I know the airbrush isn't extraordinary, but it will give me a feel for it before I spend 70-100 dollars on a Badger or an Iwata, and the compressors I see are mostly all just the same OEM.
The main reason I'm thinking of this over the cheaper one on amazon is because of the tank attached to the compressor, because I've heard that compressors without tanks can cause an uneven coat or something. How true is that, and can you guys give any other advice/suggestions?
>>46384894
The paint should look like it's swelling up- brush it off.
>>46385823
Not him, but some of us are stuck out in the middle of fucking nowhere and have to deal with satellite internet or dial-up. Not everyone CAN upgrade their internet service.
so, I made this thing at work because LASER CUTTER. I think it might be cool as part of a set for PnP RPGs.
is this a thread I can talk about these sorts of projects in?
or should I go bother /diy/ or /toy/?
just under 2.5" high to the top of the chimney(shorter than a dreadnought, taller than a typical tactical marine)
>>46386233
That's understandable anon, and I'm sorry to hear that, shit sucks, but you have to understand that you're a minority in that regard and shouldn't expect others to cater to your needs, like >>46385630.
How exactly do you customize a special character - specifically removing emblems like faction-specific symbols?
>>46386510
Hard to advise on specifics without context, but generally you can use files, jeweler's saws, clippers, or your hobbyknife depending on what you're removing and the material. Obviously, metal models are harder to "clean up" than plastic, resin, or shitcast.
>>46386485
>I'm sorry to hear that
No you're not.
>catering to your needs
It's not catering, it's decent intelligence. Who the fuck snaps a picture with their crappy cell phone that uploads it straight away? You're no better than people with upside down and 90 degree tilted photos.
Even WITH high speed internet, it's obnoxious to see something over 2 MB.

Testors are shit for wargaming minis, they're more for vehicles.
You want good stuff.
As for brushes, I recommend you get
http://www.amazon.com/Hobby-Starter-Mega-Brush-Set/dp/B00HC8H4EI?ie=UTF8&keywords=army%20painter%20brush&qid=1459485916&ref_=sr_1_4&sr=8-4
as for paints, citadel is good if you feel like doing the pain in the ass that is transfering to dropper bottles (I only went through the effort because of a black friday sale where paint pots were 2$ each). Get army painter or vallejo paints, the sets are good for starting out.
Good on you for choosing orks, they're a fun army. As far as for painting them goes, you're going to want to not custom mix your paints til you're very experienced with the hobby. A nice pro-tip for ork players is to kitbash the hell out of everything. Take a burna head from a burna box, put it onto a nob body from the nob box, and put a mek's circular saw arm and a nob's spear gun arm and boom, you have a pain dok. I also recommend you look into 3rd party models, models and minis has cheep mek guns, which as a ork player you'll need.
>>46386510
>How exactly do you customize a special character - specifically removing emblems like faction-specific symbols?
Without that big Crimson Fists emblem covering his chest plastron, I think Captain Cortez could make a fine Blood Angel some day!
Alright so question to the more accomplished people here: I'm painting some Reaper Bones stuff for my D&D campaign and it's all fine. Except the bones plastic is pretty crap and the paint/primer both rub off fairly easily. Not a big deal, I just have to seal it. But I've never really used a sealant before, so would GW purity seal work fine, or is there some other brand I should use that I can get at the hardware store or whatever? Trying not to fuck this up.
Also someone is giving me money to paint a fig for them so I guess I'm a shit tier pro painter now.
What do you all think? Should I do it?
>>46387354
The generally accepted method is do put down a thin coat of gloss varnish, then a thin coat of matt varnish.
>>46386836
>Testors are shit for wargaming minis, they're more for vehicles.
>Good on you for choosing orks, they're a fun army.
As I said earlier, not him. Flames of War player, with tons of little bitty tanks to paint.

I don't bother with human eyes unless its a very important model. Otherwise I just give them heavy reikland fleshshade/agrax earthshade in those sockets and call it a day.
If its a helmet or some other glowing eye kind of thing though I will gladly paint those since you don't need to do pupils and the color pop is important.
>>46391304
Just start with the eyes and paint over the edges of them, it's easy to do

GW games the best miniatures in the world, of the finest materials available, aptly named finecast.
That's why.
From what I heard the stuff springs back to it's original shape after a while even if you straighten it out. Or it just starts to sag cause it's soft.
I made an order right around the time they switched to FC from metal. I originally had ordered a bunch of metal blisters. They send me clamp packs with FC.
The models were so crappy I lost all my drive to even touch the damn things.

On the iron hand, i used rakarth flesh, AP light tone (gw equivalent would be a sepia wash), then ushabti bone.
on the space shark i used pallid wych flesh, then black wash, then pallid wych flesh again, and some dark red wash around the chin.

Yep, that's even where I got my compressor/airbrush kit from. They don't sell the needed adapters for compressor->tank or tank->filter/regulator, and even then, the smallest one (5 gal) is way too big for just hobby airbrushing. I'd be more willing to just buy another compressor that comes with a tank and have a backup.
>>46387558
Thin your paints a little more
>>46395793
get some runefang steel and do chips and flakes on the metal yellow bits like the axe blade and gun covers, the yellow is really pretty and solid though, so major props on that, but unless you like clean orks I can guarantee it will make them look damn orky. Mud spatters optional but those are a bit harder to do small-scale, so I guess just general combat weathering and dings. solid colors all around though!
>>46395986
Have you noticed any problems with just using a compressor with no tank? Any problems with the paint applying?

oh, and one more thing, darken the oustanding metal with a wash or two of nuln oil to make the brighter steel flecks stand out and not just look the same as other metallic parts, but thats up to you since it will change the overall tone of the model, emphasizing the yellow more.

Nice oldschool stuff! I dig the knee pad heraldry, gonna get my space negros a few dragon heads on their knees.
And that banner guy gave me an idea.

>>46397612
>How can I model a fluffy salamander flag token?
Mine is an Imperial Astropath, converted to carry a Space Marine back banner at the top of his staff. Damn thing breaks every time I take it somewhere! He's meant to look like one of the chapter serfs on the cover of the Fifth Edition Blood Angels Codex.
My other thought was to convert the plastic Dark Angel "Watcher in the Dark" who carries the sword as a "Perfidious Relic". Naturally, you'd replace the sword with a bosspole and make him yer banna wava.
>What about using servitor skulls to carry a flag?
That could work, although it might require you to model some trailing cables to hold the skulls up - otherwise, yer banna's gonna drag on the ground. Oh, and you'd probably have to come up with a custom banna, too!
>>46397148
Thanks. I gave all my DA blue lenses because the red always looked a bit too edgy. And if it's one thing Dark Angels don't need, it's additional edge.
>>46395793
I don't like orcs (even less orks) but I found myself staring at your pic for a while.
I think you pulled a great yellow there, which is usually hard to, you should be proud.
A bit of weather or battle damage could be what you are looking for.
Lads, I gave 10 tactical marines and 2 assault marines a trip through 24 hours of simple green.
When I took them out and took a brush to them, the GW paints came right off... but the Army Painter base+primer sprays refuse to be removed except for very small areas.
Is Simple Green weak at removing primer or is AP primer just super resistant to this?
>>46397998
Primers in general can be tough to get off. They usually don't actually impede painting over, though.
>>46398075
I see.
One of the models looks like his came off and he's a darker grey than the normal plastic...
Would it be a good idea to do a very quick pass over all of them with the primer before repainting?
Also really wishing I hadn't tried out a red primer one of them, he's gonna stick out like a sore thumb if I don't build up to the teal properly.

It really depends on several factors. I use non-acetone nail polish remover to strip just about anything because it works in seconds instead of days/weeks, but there are a lot of caveats to using NANPR. I made a video about this but took it down because I felt that I didn't cover the risks of this method appropriately, some things to consider:
1) most of the models I strip are relatively recent GW plastics, and metal
2) metal obviously won't be harmed, in fact you can use straight up acetone on them which is probably even better
3) anyway, my method is to get a bowl of water, toothbrush, and NANPR, go outside to the parking lot, dip the brush in the remover and start scrubbing the paint off the miniature. I can strip a space marine from thick 12 year old's ebay paintjob to bare plastic in about 30 seconds with this method
4) there are some issues. you have to learn how to do it properly, the amounts of remover you need on your toothbrush, and how long you can leave it before it starts to soften the material. if the remover on the mini/brush gets too saturated with paint, it will stop working. dip it in water after you're done to get that shit off or your model will lose detail, I lost a jump pack chaos lord this way
5) you may have to go back over some highly detailed models because paint sludge tends to get stuck in the details, so rinse it, let it dry, and go over it with the remover again
6) do NOT submerge the minis in the remover
7) wear gloves because the toothbrush will sling paint sludge everywhere
8) I've tried it on finecast a few times on small pieces but not enough to be confident that it's ideal for models overall
My camera is a bit shit but pic related is a Helbrute I stripped this way in a couple of minutes. You can still see some primer and red base coat that sludged up and stuck around the gun area with lots of little recesses. I had to go back over that but overall just the first pass stripped better than simple green etc. ever will

carmen is such a fucking liar, she's not "working her way through school", every single of one of those $1 bills in her panty line goes toward her heresy era legions with eventual plans to recreate the drop site massacre WYSIWYG

was thinking about using this scheme
I'm looking to get into Warhammer 40k finally after I get my tax return.
I'm starting Imperial Guard.
I'm buying Vallejo game color paints. Question is, in general, how far does that 17ml go? I'm assuming I'll be able to paint the Start Collecting set with one bottle of each color I need with lots left over, but beyond that? Sorry if that's an odd question.
Also, is distilled water a fine thinning agent for vallejo paints?
Thanks in advance.

I've bought like 3 pots of the same color ever.

Not really. I have that kind of job, live alone, and I've got plenty enough money to fritter away on overpriced bits of plastic.

Painting my mechanicus with a Stegadon scale green base like pic. I don't know what colour to make the inside of the robes on skitarii, I was thinking maybe orange-brown or simple cream robe.
