Hey wip, more questions about varnish, if you pardon my ignorance. How susceptible to temperature and humidity are spray varnishes like testors dullcote?? Is testors THE go to spray matt, or are there other options??

Also, is the gloss coat first followed by matt still needed to get the best protection?? If so, are there any good gloss varnish sprays??

Hey WIP, german begginer from maybe half a week ago here.

maybe you remember me, prolly not but i got myself some stuff, got my mold-lines off, wet palatte is ready, stuck the ultrasmurf on top of a pill bottle.

but i have some questions before i slap the primer on. Do i thin my primer? Do i want to thin the other paints?

gosh im so excited
>>
>>46349212
>but i have some questions before i slap the primer on.

I do remember you. I was intrigued at the multi-part marines you had. I'd never seen those before. Guess I'm a little behind the times.

>Do i thin my primer?

Isn't your primer coming out of a spray can? How do you propose to thin that?

>Do i want to thin the other paints?

Definitely! Your wet palette will help you a lot in that regard, but it won't do all the work for you.
>>
>>46349212

I don't think the Primer would need anything but the tiniest hint of water, as it's supposed to be covering, but try not to go too heavy or worry if it doesn't cover in one go - it's better to let it dry then do a second coat, rather than just slapping more on, as that's what makes streak marks.

Remember to take pics of your progress, I'd love to see it anon!
>>
>>46348992
I live in a very dry area so I couldnt tell you much about humidity, Id assume if you did it indoors (garage, or even a covered patio) you'd probably be fine. After shopping around testors gave me the best results with a true matte finish. I never gloss coat my models before dullcote, unless of course there was decal work or a need to seal the model before hand, if your just painting the model regularly I dont think its a necessary step. As someone else said though testors does smell pretty strong so be wary of where you spray it.

I was intrigued at the multi-part marines you had.

I guess they are only coming with this kit for absolut begginers including all these small paints, so no assembly required and you can skip that part

>Isn't your primer coming out of a spray can? How do you propose to thin that?

actually one of the pots that came with the kit is imperial primer and as i read stuff up it is supposed to be a paint primer

>>46349242

I'm relatively new to warhammer. Have a ~1350 point necron army and I'm enjoying the painting and modelling side of things, but necrons to provide much for customization. I have the dark vengeance set, but I have yet to paint it. I'm thinking of home brewing up a Marine chapter with it, and probably just using dark angels rules with it. So I come to you to ask for any good ideas on how to either merge the chaos and DA units or just expand upon the DA in general. I was seriously considering grabbing a BaC box as I love the look of 30k models, but it would probably look like ass beside my starter set models.

>I was seriously considering grabbing a BaC box as I love the look of 30k models, but it would probably look like ass beside my starter set models.

I disagree. There is absolutely nothing wrong with mixing in historic models of armour with more recent models.
>>
>>46350462
As a long time DA player let me give you some pointers.

First off, Dark Angels can be played in radically different ways and you'll probably want to figure out what you prefer before you start buying shit. There's the more or less vanilla mass marine gunline experience except with improved overwatch, then there's fast&furious Ravenwing or low model count, super elite Deathwing. Or a very constrained mix of them all in the form of the Lion's Blade detachment.

Also, BaC models really don't fit into the 40k DA aesthetic.
>>
>>46349760

>>
>>46349339
I used imperial primer for the first time last weekend.

Mine came pretty thin. When well shaken and mixed, it still didn't come out as solid black like when you prime with abaddon black. It was sort of stickyish consistency when used, like it had some pva in it.
This makes it stick the the model.

Don't worry if the model isn't totally black at the end, as long as it's totally covered it will do its job.

Gab dang, are those mixed and matched? Maybe I will go ahead with it...
>>46350603
Yeah I suppose I should have clarified that. I really like the shooty bits, and improved over watch gets my dick hard as the other guys I play with like to assault. I like the aesthetic of the deathwing, and low model count high point models may be a good choice if I'm going in mostly for the looks of the army. Not a big fan of the raven wing though. Don't really know why but bikes and vehicles just don't really do it for me.

I might get some death wing knights and go from there. And probably another unit of troops (which may or may not end up being from the BaC). Or maybe I'll say fuck it to 40k models altogether and go pure 30k armors. Man I cant decide...the funny thing is I went with necrons as I thought space Marines were bland and boring. Then I actually read into them and realized just how badass they can be.
>>
A PSA to all would-be converters out there.

There are a bunch of 5x Stormcast Liberators on ebay at the moment for $20 dollarydoos.
I used the seller before, they're legit.

Looks like my Inquisitorial Crusaders are about to get replaced...
>>
>>46350770
My recommendation then: Work towards a Lion's Blade Strike Force. In other words: Get a battle demi company and minimum strength Deathwing Redemption Force for FULL BS overwatch.

That's what I'm playing most of the time since I shelved my 3k points of pure Deathwing and don't want to roflstomp people with Ravenwing.
>>
>>46350770
>Gab dang, are those mixed and matched? Maybe I will go ahead with it...

When I put together Squad Hector, I wanted to include one of every mark of historical armour. Nobody would ever wear a Mk I for anything but ceremonial occasions (i.e., never on the battlefield), so I slipped in an old artificer armour model instead. From left to right:

Artificer Armour 4 (070270/2)
Mk II Crusade Armour (070197/2)
Mk III Iron Armour (070197/1)
Mk IV Imperial Maximus [Deleted From Imperial Records]
Mk VII Armorum Impetor (9947010111201)
Mk V Heresy Armour (070197/3)
Mk VI Corvus Armour [Deleted From Imperial Records]

If you notice any black showing through after your first coat, you can always cover it up with a bit of blue after that dries.

It looks good so far, maybe touch up a few places like the vents on his backpack. Don't worry so much about getting coverage on the parts you're going to paint over later anyway, like the chest eagle, greaves and eyes.

You'll regret (for 99%) paiting your dudes (which are probably expensive for you aswell) with crappy paints, that will look like shit.
Better get a proper set of paints, good brush and take it slow. Don't rush, take your time, learn, ask for advice.

No.

Definitely. Regular craft paint is terribly unsuited to use on fine-scale models, doubly so if, as >>46354532 reminds us, they are expensive.

>>46354537
>What do I mix in with red to make it brighter?
>Orange? Yellow?

Orange is already red mixed with yellow. Mixing red with orange will give you a more gradual change than mixing red with yellow, which can brighten up really quick.
>>
>>46354537
White makes it paler.

You can't really brighten a colour without adding a brighter colour, the issue with primary colours is it'll shift the hue.

>>46355246
>How did you highlight the edges on that black armour?

Really simple, here's the recipe: black paint ( I used Vallejo Negro Black) and mechanicus standard grey.

1. give everything a thin coat of black paint
2. paint lines of grey mixed with black, mix ratio about 1:3
3. do the same thing, but do a thinner line this time and with more grey paint in the mix, so about 2:3
4. edge higlight with pure mechanicus grey

And pic related is what you end up with, I hope it helped.

Not sure what you are saying here, but the models in the top row of your picture are a regular assault squad with plastic banner from the command squad and slightly modified banner top.
The bottom row are the models you could buy from gw all the way during 3rd edition.

>>46356465
see above.
the only conversion is tacking an arm from the command squad on there.
Anyway, the unit was called honor guard, but functionally the same.
Like assault veterans and regular veterans became stern and vanguard all of a sudden. Still the same thing.

>No. The unit is older than the models.

Death Company first got their roolz in 1996 when GW published Angels of Death. At the time, GW acknowledged that the Flesh Tearers, Angels Vermilion, Blood Drinkers, Angels Sanguine, and Angels Encarmine were successor chapters (adding the Lamenters and Knights of Blood was a Fifth Edition ret-con), but further asserts that while "there may be other Chapters which were derived from the Blood Angels, but the Imperial records do not name them, nor do any other chapters claim the lineage." Except for one page showing the regular squadboyz paint schemes, nothing is said about the successor chapters' painting their Death Companies any differently.

>The old cmd squad with jump packs for BA had the bits in metal.

Blood Angels got to have an Honour Guard instead of the normal Command Squad in Third Edition, when GW issued us a "pamphlet" that we could use to go along with the Third Edition Space Marines codex. The colour scheme was simply red armour and gold helmets, and yes, we got some metal models with jump packs to represent them. The coolest thing, though, was that every model could have a power sword, and you could have up to ten models accompanying your HQ choice.

Later, some of da studio ladz would take a little artistic liberty and paint the Honour Guard's entire armour gold, much like the First Edition Blood Angel captain on whom other later models were based. It would be prudent to point out, however, that these models were made by combining assault squad models with Sanguinary Guard bitz - the latter did not exist until 2009, when their roolz wuz introduced in Fifth Edition.
>>

some SW power weapons and a stip of GS on the shin?
Still don't see how this qualifies as heavily converted. It's a kitbash with some GS.
They look good, no doubt.

Anyway, i think we derailed the thread enough.
>>
>>46355765
I figured gleaming gold was too decorative for the brutality of the Flesh Tearers. Then I remembered that they fall to the black rage at a higher rate than other successors, so I wanted the sang guard to feel like monuments to the fallen, so I decided stone colored armor. The helmets will still be red though.

Hey /wip/, I'm looking for a couple suggestions. I've had for quite some time a set of Cataphractii Terminators which I fancied running as Assault Terminators in a SM list, and I'm looking for some suitable thunder hammers and storm shields to give them. I've looked at Scribor and quite like their shields, but I don't believe they come with hands (which this resin kit lacks, obviously). Any suggestions will be appreciated!
>>
>>46358840
Mix of both, I use airbrush to jot down the spacey cloudy colours then go into it with super thinned paints to make some of the nebulas a bit stronger. The stars are just white paint splattered with a drybrush.

Main tip (if not blessed with airbrush) would be the standard pin ur thaints and start your colours very dark (almost black), your spacey cloud/nebulas will look like fucked up camo if they dont blend into the black.

Make sure if you're flicking white paint onto your model to flick it a few times onto your palette/whatever to make sure that the dots come out tiny and not like you jizzed on your mini.

Use actual images of space as reference and dont try to completely make it up.

Hope this helps dude.

Not a specific model, but the 3rd ed stormboyz were like frag grenades blasting shrapnel out all over the place whenever they fell over. I was pretty young and didn't know what pinning was (and even if I did, I probably wouldn't have bothered to pin legs, arms and a head to a metal torso then pin the rocket to the back of that) so it was just cheap super glue holding them together poorly.

Hello all, I'm going to buy my first models ever, as I want to get into 40k, and the Skitarii interest me greatly.

I need advice and instructions for how to paint, and assemble models properly, as I am a complete beginner at this, and will order my Start Collecting! Skitarii pack soon.

If possible, I'd also like to know how I could paint the Stygies VIII color scheme, and what colors I would need for it, as their lore interests me, and their color scheme caught my eye.

I will repeat that I am a beginner, and have never painted nor built a model before, and am asking for advice and instructions on how to properly do so.

Thank you in advance.
>>
>>46363534
plastic cement is good for plastic to plastic bonds. It slightly melts the plastic so you effectively weld it.
If you want to glue plastic to something else use super glue instead.
>>
>>46364113
Alright thanks, I'll have to go buy some super glue tthen.

I'd rather do the bases apart from the models anyways, I don't want to risk getting the paint on them.
>>
>>46363827
Check the OP for more useful stuff like this.
Can't really tell you anything more specific atm, cause i'm not familiar with the new paint range, but i know for sure that you should use subassemblies for the skitarii.
That means do not glue it all together and then start painting. You won't be able to reach the inside of the cloak with a brush anymore. Think ahead before you build them.
>>
>>46364228
Thank you, so I should paint, and then glue? Sounds good to me.
>>
>>46364323
Glue a bit, paint, then finish gluing. Do a dry fit first, identify if there's anywhere that will be hard to pain once assembled. Don't glue those bits, do them after painting.
>>
>>46364323
Yeah kinda. Glue together what you can. I'm not sure how the skitarii minis are cut up, but if you glue the whole thing together and on a base the inside of the cloak and the torso under the rifles are gonna be hard to reach spots.
At the same time painting each bit separately can be insanely draining. So try to find a reasonable compromise.
Maybe it's enough to just not glue them to the base, so you can paint them from below. If you are gonna do that I'd recommend inserting a pin into the foot and using that to mount the mini on the handle of a pinvise for painting. Or stick it in a piece of cork.

Plastic cement bonds hold best, on naked plastic. So if you use subassemblies you might want to mask the glue connections with a piece of blutac or something before priming.

>could I buy them from GW alongside my Skitarii?

Yes, but there are other places where things are less costly or of higher quality. It depends somewhat on availability and also personal preferences.

For example, I like GW's mold line remover tool. Can you use the back side of a hobby knife's blade to remove mold lines? Yes. I'd rather do it this way, though; if I slip, I won't be slicing into my finger with the knife. I like GW's paints, too. There are a lot places on line and in real life where people who have been there and done that (pic related) can give you expert advice on how to use them to achieve the effects yer interested in. On the other hand, I buy all my brushes at other places, and I don't buy GW's spray paint/primer/sealer because the utility-per-dollar is substantially lower elsewhere.

>I plan on ordering them withing a month or two, so I can set aside extra cash if need be.

If you're going to buy from GW, you'll need that extra cash. I like to buy some things from my local GW because I want to support the store and see it succeed, but there's no harm in spreading your money around a bit when it makes sense.
>>
>>46364619
>but what other things will I need
a hobby knife or a scalpel. That's basically the most important thing next to your brush. Some files or sandpaper would be good too. That's basically all you really NEED. You can get a clipper to cut stuff from the sprues more easily. That's nice to have too.
>and could I buy them from GW alongside my Skitarii?
You could, but GW's stuff is usually twice as expensive as it has to be.
You can get your brushes from an art supply store. Synthetics for drybrushing and metal paint (cheap stuff, easily replaceable, for things that tend to kill your brushes) and some aquarell/watercolor brushes for painting. Model color is quite a lot thinner than usual artist acrylics so those will do fine.
People are gonna tell you to get sable brushes. That's not wrong, though the most expensive kind of brush you can buy. Not something I'd tell a beginner to buy as first brush ever. They're worth it though and they'll last you a long time if you take proper care of them. Brush maintenance is a skill that has to be learned too though.
When you're in the art store you can also pick up some medium or crackle medium if you are interested in those kind of things. Not necessarily something you need imo though.

Everything else you can get from a hardware store.
Paperclips are good for pinning.

that's all you need as a beginner.
>>
>>46364619

Never buy GW products except for models (and books if you need the physical book for some reason instead of pirating), and even when buying GW models try to buy at non-GW stores to get a 20% discount.

GW supplies, while the new ones are very nice due to the fancy metal redesigns, are very expensive. You can buy a $5 sprue cutter that works just as well, even if it doesn't look as pretty or have a shearing action like GW's $30 cutter.

sup /wip/, about to start my first knight titan, quick question, can the frame be built up and painted before putting on any armour plates? I like to paint my metals with a black undercoat and a heavy leadbelcher drybrush, but for the plates I want to airbrush them. Would that work out?
>>
>>46349212
if you're painting with imperial primer, yes, it only needs a little bit of thinning but you'll also need to use at least two coats. However it's worth noting that painting on with imperial primer takes A LOT longer than using a spray can / airbrush.

My best advice would be getting a spray can primer (I actually use a can of grey car paint primer from my local Poundland in the UK, don't know what a good german equivalent would be) and you just want to spray it very lightly for a split second over each part of the model until you get full coverage, otherwise you will loose detail.

If you find yourself getting into the hobby then a cheap airbrush is worth investing in, an entry level compressor with brush is affordable if you're buying a lot of models and that makes priming, basing and some highlighting on your models even easier.

>getting into the hobby then a cheap airbrush is worth investing in
I will never understand why some people keep giving this advice.
I painted three whole armies plus spares since I started in the hobby, never felt the need of an airbrush.
>>
>>46369336
Presumably they give the advice because they did it and found it useful.

You might not find a use for it, but the large number of hobbyists who do buy airbrushes and find them a really valuable addition to their toolbox says a lot.
>>
>>46349339
Ich weiß wo du wohnst.
>>
>>46369373
Keep in mind it needs an entire different set of skills from brush painting, I dubt any beginner is willing to learn two paths of skills at once.
Also, recently you see armies of models sprayed with airbrushes that on closer ispection looks like crap.
>>
>>46360429
If the marines are all being inserted via thunderhawk by jump pack then either the apothecary straps one on or those marines.go in with noone to recover geneseed.
>>
>>46369421
That's because some people think you can paint a model from start to finish just using an airbrush.
>>
>>46369510
In the end: you can do pretty awesome tasks with an airbrush, but it isn't for hobby beginners in my opinion.
>>
>>46369531
Ok, I've only been back in the hobby for 3 months and it's probably going to be my next big purchase, once I move out of student accommodation.

The things that I'm hoping to get from it are:
>Priming when it's raining / dark outside
>Cutting down on time spent basecoating vehicles and power armour

I'm not interested in becoming one of those guys who spends more time masking off sections of their miniature than they do painting it, but I'd also like to use it for basic highlights on tacticals etc.

It also seems like airbrushes are good for getting nice finish on big areas on vehicles, doing the thin layers needed for a smooth finish on my Rhinos by brush takes forever at the moment.

Am I barking up the wrong tree?
>>
>>46369247
Based Duncan
>>
>>46369590
Nah that's pretty much the tree you were looking for. A cheap airbrush cuts down immensely on the time spent getting smooth coats on large, flat surfaces.

I got one at a clearance sale for €40 and while I couldn't do detail work with it even if I wanted to, it's a godsend for basecoating vehicles.

Metallics separate faster than other paints. If they are 'runny' then chances are more than good that you didn't shake it enough.

If you still want to thin it, don't do it with water, but use acrylic medium instead.

Uhh guys beginner here again, i think i have a problem.

On the package it says this pot is supposed to be leadbelcher, but on the photo you can seeplease dont look at the pauldrons i know they are horrible it dried very into something very black on the skull that is, isnt leadbelcher supposed to be a mettalic grey?

Can things like this happen at GW that a paint gets mixed up into the wrong pot/wrong pot gets into the wrong package?

thankfully i only did on the skull because i suspected somethings wrong on the first look at it, in the pot.

Shaking the pot, while it's closed, for half a minute or so should do the trick. You may also want to use a thinner layer of it on such a small area.

Solid progress so far, though.

>>46371321
I've had leadbelcher come out like that. Requires more shaking, may require stirring (do NOT stir with a brush unless you don't want to use that brush any more) to get it all mixed again.

Contact GW customer service: you might get some free stuff out of it, and the root problem is unlikely to lie with your retailer.

Those that don't ask, don't get.
>>
>>46371723
well thats a good idea didnt even come into my mind.

Anyone here has experience with the german branches customer support? should i just ring them up or send an email?
>>
>>46371864
I always call customer support lines, I get a better response from being on the phone and being able to explain the problem and ask what they can do to rectify it.

Emphasize that you're disappointed that you're not able to finish your first ever marines because the box didn't contain what was advertised.

If they don't just tell you to go back to your retailer, then I'd expect you to be able to get them to send you a Leadbelcher to make up for it.

I have objective markers. Sorry for large image, posting from phone. And, unfortunately, my orange spray decided to become cheeto dust. The other colors work fine, but orange was the only color I was set on and didn't notice until the damage was.done.
Worse still: mdf, so I can't just wash it off

have you put together a box of space marine scouts lately? box is 90% mold lines since the molds are old as dirt.
>>
>>46371940
Try a red wash over the orange to tone it down and add some depth.
>>
>>46371864
As shitty of a company they maybe. GW customer support is world class. I had a small crack in a Chaos Warriors Sorcerer kit, so they sent me replacement. That one also had a crack, so they send me two more and a pot of liquid green stuff.

While you will only get either a replacement leadbelcher pot (probably the same small one), never hesitate to contact them and get some free shiz (cause they always let you keep the defective one)
>>
>>46371971
Would, but it's paper. The wash just soaks through the whole thing. I tried it on a test strip earlier, which is why I went with spraying it orange.
>>
>>46372069
get a red marker?
>>
>>46372069
Try sealing it with a varnish before doing any more to it then.

>that is a lovely shade of green! Can I get the recipe?

I prime black, basecoat a deep blue then I airbrush a very diluted yellow. Accent with a brush the individual scales with a bright green then tip with yellow. Not pictured I went and added a tiny bit of beige to the highlights on the face (eye ridges/noses) when I added the teeth and eyes to balance and pop it out.

Thanks, I can't wait to have actually good pictures of them... It's slow to paint while taking care of a baby.

I managed to get to Zencart via googling, but the failure to redirect from the address in the ads and on their Facebook page is inexcusable.

I do like the concept, but the miniature itself looks like microwaved semen.

Holy shit those prices are fucking horrendous.
40 dollars for a 10-man sub-standards squad?
Quite dunny seeing them with all these unsolds in the quantity case.
>>
>>46372991
Either or.
Both the cannon and the shell in metal is too much imo.
>>
>>46373639
Yeah. It would require some work. It would also mean i couldnt run both at the same time lol. So maybe I shouldn't.
