Funny thing is, Luke is the ultimate Mary Sue. Only gets light Jedi training as an adult, still ends up beating two highly experienced Sith. Can speak multiple languages even though he grew up on a farm and has only interacted with moisture. Can somehow magically fly an X-Wing. Is expert robot fixer. Is able to feel no emotions at all when his effective parents are burnt to the bone in front of him. Is Aryan as fuck. Just casually grappling hooks across bottomless pits while dodging lasers with a teenage princess swooning in his arms - and even better for a farmboy, it's his sister.

His only flaw is... caring too much

Alright cool, thanks. Might give Howlrunner a white and red stripe or something and two veteran ties, then I can paint up some Royal Guard ties to sit on a three prong with the Firespray. I just wish the scale was a bit more accurate when it comes to the squadrons, because the standalone ships just look weird on a single stick, but look too small on a prong with other ships.

Because she's spent most of her life alone, surviving off her own skills. She had to come to terms with what was being asked of her, she had to grow up and stop fending just for herself but fend for other people too. Just like Luke and any other mythical hero, she had to accept her destiny to be more than just some random layabout.

Ahsoka is just designed as a quirky fap bait for children like you. She's also just some throwaway character from a kid's cartoon that started in the worst critically rated and least commercially successful Star Wars cinematic release.

Watch the one Bonteri episode - she basically tries to get the kid to comment on her sexually, and then gives him shit when he tries to play it safe - keep in mind shes walking around with two lightsabers visible, and has been giving said kid the stink eye the whole time.

It was a weird scene. Especially considering she goes lesbian for Barriss in later seasons

>Why didn't Darth Vader just follow Leia's ship to the Rebel base? Why stop it? The overall upshot is that they follow her to the Rebel base, so why not just do that earlier?

>Why did they let the escape pod go? They said it had no life signs, yet they weren't looking for a person but for some software/hardware. Neither of which have life signs. Even then, there are plenty of sentient beings all over the place in this setting that don't have life signs, aka droids.

>What are the fucking chances that the moment Leia's craft is boarded, they happen to be over the hiding place of Obi Wan Kenobi? There are about 100,000,000,000 planets in a galaxy and it would take 100,000 years to travel across one at the speed of light. Even without bringing science into it, galaxies are fucking huge. Then on top of that, it just so happens to land near his home? That's like if you threw a box at the Earth from the Moon and it just so happened to land by your friend's house.

>Luke feels no emotion when two people who are effectively his parents are brutally murdered. He looks a little bit cross, then that's it. Similarly, Leia's reaction to her homeworld being destroyed, thus her parents, all childhood friends, pretty much everyone and anywhere she's ever know being destroyed, is to say "WHAT?" and then look a bit incredulous for 4 seconds. How do you justify this lack of acting and/or character development?

>If Obi Wan is trying to be sneaky and incognito, why does he casually whip out his lightsaber in Mos Eisely and cut off someone's hand?

>The Rebels are desperately trying to find a weakness in the Death Star. You know what would be a great weakness? If you could somehow get a small group inside the Death Star to walk around unimpeded, turn off switches, hack into the mainframe computer on such a level you can open doors in the top security prison level.. Think of the damage you could do... So why does no one take advantage of that at all when it actually happens?

Alderaan was destroyed for this secret, you've gone through torture to not reveal this secret... But no, Leia happily leads them right to Yavin 4 rather than making any attempt to change ships or anything. None of the Rebels seem to mind that she's led the Death Star to their door.

>This is compounded by the fact that they don't even KNOW there'll be a weakness in the Death Star plans. On the off chance there is, she's lead a planet-destroying weapon to their Rebel base rather than (pretty easily) throwing them off her trail or at least delaying them.

Mind you, one of those phone games still brought back the HWK-290 and Dark Troopers. As shitty as it was, I commend Commander for that.

On an unrelated note, a past thread discussed the pros and cons of a starfighter carrier that worked on real-life concepts--catapult launches, a single large flight deck, etc. as opposed to Star Wars' usual multi-hangar model with repulsorlift launches. The Star Wars formula seems more practical for hull integrity and such but I've got a boner for catapult launches. Is there any way to make this concept work on a ship? What feasible technical reason could a carrier have for the one-deck, catapult launch system?

I imagine a catapult launch is handy for scrambles, gets them up to combat speed super quick.

I'm not a militaryfag to have any idea of comparative launch rates, a well set up catapult system could likely get more ships out the door faster as well. Especially something like what I remember from the TIE Fighter games, where the TIEs are rack mounted and fed out the launch hole one at a time. Just add a catapult instead of simply dropping it.
>>
>>44473740

It carries Droid fighters and you can store them far better in a gigantic clip. The launch area consists of a space for them to unfold, then a catapult to launch them, which the carrier does at breakneck speed.

Real carriers have single flight decks because that's the only way to realistically launch planes. Star Wars hangars are a problem because there's too much wasted space. The main advantage is that you can launch all your fighters at once, but you have shitloads of hangar bays (which are a structural weakpoint) when you could have a single bay + fighter storage and an elevator.

It's true. The idea of Vader being his father was invented several drafts into ESB. This has been established for a long time now. The Emperor wasn't invented until those drafts too. In ANH Vader describes himself as a "Master", Leia says she should've guessed Tarkin would be holding Vader's leash, not Palpatine. Even when we did see Palpatine in ESB, he was played by a woman with chimp eyes superimposed over her face and voiced by some guy other than McDiarmid. They just half-assed some shit, not expecting him to have to actually appear.

Remember, it was just called "Star Wars" until they started writing ESB, not ANH or Episode IV. Don't get me wrong, I'm saying this derogatively, I love how writers piece things together and incorporate new ideas as they go along.

You are now aware that in the novelization, it's explained that Anakin was conflicted over whether he should slay the younglings or show them a secret passage out of the temple. It was only when Sors Bandeam mistakenly said, "Master Skywalker, there are too many of them! What are we going to do?" that Anakin was reminded of how the Jedi Council denied him the rank of Master without explanation, and that feeling of betrayal was powerful enough to harden his resolve and give him the strength he needed to complete his mission.

And yes, I realize some of you know this already but I'm surprised it doesn't get talked about more.

I know this is b8, but I've seen people seriously arguing that luke inexplicably got force powers too, and therefore he's a mary sue.

The difference between Rey and Luke, at least in their debut movies, is that luke was actually shown practicing the force powers he used.

The only force power that luke used in ANH was letting it guide him while shooting things at the death star. Earlier in the movie, luke was practicing exactly that: Letting the force guide him as he fought blind against a taser droid.

>Training to let force guide him
>it is established that this hokey religion stuff can guide you in combat scenarios, if obi wan is right
>later, force is used to guide luke in a combat scenario.

This results in a moment of triumph for the character.

Contrast, rey, whose use of the force is completely as the plot demands. There's no moment of triumph. Just a complete lack of dramatic tension, because any problematic scenario Rey gets into, you know she'll develop a force power spontaneously to get out of it.

There's nothing wrong with Rey's personality. There's a shit ton wrong about how her character is developed. People who complain about her being a mary sue are complaining about her writing, not the fact that she's a strong female character.

It isn't an attack on feminism or women, it's an attack on shitty writing.

Luke was shown very briefly practising at an age that is apparently way to old. Rey is heavily implied to have been trained at a young age before being left on Jakku for her own safety.

Luke can magically fly an X-Wing because he's driven some kind of speeder in a desert? So I guess I can fly an F22 because I can drive a Ford Focus? How does the Force even help you aim? When has anyone ever used Force accuracy before? It's a totally unrelated skill to knowing where a little drone is going to shoot a weak laser beam. Luke practised for all of 20 seconds. Rey has at least had to fend for herself for 20 years or so and, as I said, has been heavily implied to have been one of the ex-students of Luke.

Remember, unlike the original film, this wasn't originally written as a one shot, from the very beginning it's written as part 1 of 3.

He's stated as learning to fly several times in the movie, hinting/stating it was at some sort of academy; possibly an imperial one. Early on with his Aunt and Uncle it's mentioned when he wants to leave and Uncle Owen pushed him to stick around through the next harvest. Later on when he's in the cantina and Solo asks for 10,000 credits to fly them to Aldeeran. I'm pretty sure there's later mentions of it, but it's I can't remember it.

Goddamn that is some heavy shit. I hear good things about the novelization I might have to check it out. But isn't master what you call people who outrank you anyway, even if they are just Knights? It's confusing since Knight is a rank but no one is ever just called that. Also Ahsoka calls Anakin master a lot but he is her personal teacher rather than just a Jedi who outranks her.

No, his actual explanation is that he's shot "wamp rats" from his speeder. Remember, it's a kid's film made to sell toys, they weren't exactly putting all that much effort into this. Rather than have a 10 minute training montage they thought they'd just hand wave it away and hope the 7-year-olds didn't notice.

I don't have a problem with that. I just have a problem with people turning the kind of critical eye on TFA that would completely fucking disintegrate ANH and the other earlier films.

http://www.theverge.com/2015/12/30/10669370/star-wars-rey-the-force-luke-skywalker-theory-jedi-kylo-ren

>The most heated fan theory pertains to Rey’s parents; by way of Leia or Luke, she is the child of a Skywalker. Given her innate gift with the Force without formal training, the lineage seems likely. But I hope this is a misdirect. The idea that the fate of the galaxy rests on the shoulders of a single group of Chosen People is counter to the work Disney has done creating a new, more inclusive saga with its characters.

>There’s an obvious inclusivity mission in these films that wasn’t present in the originals, where women and people of color are on the front lines. The Force may be strong in Luke’s family, but it has awakened in a way that paves the way for a new Jedi Order with whole new champions. That’s not only timely and necessary in Hollywood at large, but commercially savvy — kids from all backgrounds would love nothing more than to see themselves in the series.

>Suggesting that it’s Rey’s lineage that makes her destined for greatness dilutes that opportunity. It’s the same problem everyone had with midichlorians; instead of everyone having access to the Force, you suddenly had to be born with it. Admittedly, there’s a classic satisfaction to the notion that Rey, a "nobody," descends from the greatest Jedi that ever lived. It’s a Cinderella story. But the Skywalkers needn’t be royalty; they should represent the normal man or woman who found their way to greatness.

>Rey can and should represent just what Luke represented in 1977: the potential for anyone, even if they’re from a desert planet, to go on a hero’s journey and save the galaxy. Making her a Skywalker undoes that.

The funny thing is that Vergere already complained about the dangers of the Skywalkers forming a Jedi dynasty back in the EU
>>
>>44474912
Luke's T-16 was also built by Incom with a control layout that was very similar to the X-wing's, according to the reference books and visual dictionaries tied to the OT. It's less "truck to jet fighter" and more "civilian prop plane to WWII USN prop fighter." There's less of a learning gap.

Lucas didn't plan anything.

He hadn't even planned the "Vader is Luke's father" thing when the scene was filmed. The scene was shot with the dialogue being that Vader was revealing to Luke that Obi-Wan had killed his father. The actual "I am your father" line was only added when they dubbed James Earl Jones voice in.
>>
>>44474987
>No, his actual explanation is that he's shot "wamp rats" from his speeder
What I previously stated is true, go rewatch ANH. Your example is why he claimed that shooting the exhaust port on the death star with proton torpedoes was "easy", which is a pretty big handwave.

Obi wan isn't the source of dramatic tension anon. Luke's story is. You'd have a point if the movie was relying on Finn and Poe to immerse the audience, not rey.

But Obi-Wan's actions and shenanigans also extinguish dramatic tension. It's not "Oh fuck, Luke and his droids have been caught!" it's "Obi-Wan asspulls a magic ability!"

I mean, the whole Death Star interior act is totally free of drama because everyone just seems to stroll around without any problems. It's even worse because the whole movie is about destroying the DS and our heroes are in a prime position to do so yet don't do any damage to it at all other than turning off the tractor beam.

Even Luke's moment at the end is courtesy of Obi-Wan's magical ghost with his legendary "Use the Force" line.

Luke made, what, one TIE kill? He doesn't do much on the Death Star aside from the trench. We see that the point defenses on the station were lackluster and that Luke only survived to make the shot because Biggs, Wedge, and Han bought him the time he needed to make the shot. Yavin was more luck than skill.
>>
>>44475146
>obi wan's actions extinguish dramatic tension

He died literally halfway through the film. The friendly uncle mentor figure he was portraying? Gone, leaving the intended audience surrogate virtually alone. His actions increase dramatic tension, by virtue of his death.

Even if you were right, the point is about comparisons between Rey and Luke. Luke is the superior character simply by virtue of less asspulls in his force development.

How does a Vibroblade stand up against a light saber?

I understand a shock baton or staff make a force field so the saber never touches the actual physical weapon, but isn't a Vibroblade all physical weapon, they just shake so they slice things easily, but a saber would just slice it up?

How do Vibroblades not just cut eachother in combat?

Well, luke is shown to be pretty immature throughout the first two episodes.

Nobody is complaining about her character though. All of the complaints are about the lazy writing surrounding her.

>rey gets into problem A, requiring use of Tool A to survive
>don't show her learning to use or acquiring tool A previously in the movie
>instead, pull it figuratively out of her ass in the middle of the problem scene.

This is not an attack on Rey's character, her femininity, feminism, women, or minorities tumblr.

This is simply saying the writing surrounding Rey was extremely poor and lazy, even when compared to ANH.

But as I said with Luke it's like

>Ben does magic
>Gets picked on by bar scum
>Ben does lightsaber
>Gets trapped in Death Star
>Ben turns off switch
>Ben fights Vader and becomes magical blue man
>Luke instantly is the best pilot in the Rebellion having never flown an X-Wing
>Luke needs to shoot missile
>Magic Ben Ghost gives him advice

Really, it seems like Luke is totally pointless as of ANH. It's all about Obi-Wan. Yet despite only being trained for a minute to deflect little laser blasts, he's good enough to use the Force to achieve an almost impossible task. Again, this is all in one day of being a farmer.

That's without going into the general bad writing, like why does Vader stop Leia's ship instead of following her back to the Rebels? Why do the Imperials let the escape pod go? What a wonderful coincidence that Leia is right over Obi-Wan's house on his planet when she's caught. How does everyone walk so easily around the Death Star? Why don't any of them try to fuck up the DS from within when they're there? Why does Leia happily lead the Empire to Yavin 4 at the end? Practically nothing in ANH makes any basic sense.

Well here, have a serious answer. It's hard to act in heavy prosthetics. This is an unpopular thing to say, but Chewie might be likeable but it's in quite a gimmicky way. He's basically a big, cute, bipedal dog. Peter can't really act in that suit, he can't speak dialogue. It's okay as Han's loveable sidekick but it's a different matter if most of the key dialogue and acting is courtesy of such characters.
>>
>>44475397
I'm basing this off of KotOR, not anything that's currently canon.

Vibroblades don't stop lightsabers normally. A vibroblade is to the sword like the hollowpoint is to the bullet. It's sonic generator allows it to damage people far more than a normal blade would, from far less a blow.

What lets certain vibroweapons stop lightsabers is the cortosis weave, which is basically applied phlebotinum that cancels out lightsaber blades. How? fuck if anybody knows.

As for vibroblade on vibroblade action: Vibroblades are designed to vibrate to damage their target. This means they're also designed to deal with vibrations. They cancel each other out on that front, and you've basically got a sword vs a sword.

That's a moot point anyway, to be honest, because SW is more about REALLY alien creatures, not just humans with funny ears and whatnot.
>>
>>44475524

>why does Vader stop Leia's ship instead of following her back to the Rebels?

Stuff like that's tough when you start dealing with hyperspace jumps. Read "Tarkin" to get an idea of what a complex starship chase looks like. Briefly, imagine this:

> Leia sees Vader chasing her
> hyperjumps away
> Vader, having no way to track a ship through hyperspace because that technology just straight-up does not exist in SW, now has dozens of options to choose from to guess where she might have jumped to and follow her
> Even if he somehow gets it right, she can just jump again -- and with each jump, those options for escape multiply by an order of magnitude, like a branching tree, until after 2-3 jumps a pursuer is now choosing between literally THOUSANDS of possibilities

And

> what a wonderful coincidence that Leia is right over Obi-Wan's house on his planet when she's caught

Not if she was going there to get him, which is implied by, yknow, her message to him? Remember?

> "General Kenobi. Years ago you served my father in the Clone Wars. Now he begs you to help him in his struggle against the Empire. Simple answer:

They don't exist in the film universe because in the films, blasters = guns. They're a direct stand-in.

They appear in the EU because, somewhere along the line, the EU had a narrative need for "blasters, but on low-tech worlds where it wouldn't make sense for characters to have blasters".

They aren't shitty opponents, they're just overspecialized in a very narrow set of skills. They're VERY good at those skills, and you should be rightly scared when they decide to start employing them against you.
>>
>>44475723
Well he did the same thing to get to her in the first place, he says something about how the original guys who stole the plans transmitted it to her. They track the transmission - only one transmission was sent - and it led them there. If they could pounce on her over Tatooine, they could have done so over Yavin 4. They could have waited for the signal (obviously we're in heavily MacGuffin, movie logic territory here) to stop moving or whatever and then gone in.

There's a funny thing in ANH where the Empire switches between wanting the plans and wanting the location of the Rebel base. At first it's purely the plans, no mention of base. Then they segue into just wanting the base. There's no reason behind it - they know the plans are in a droid, they just arbitrarily decide the base location is better now. Remember, they do indeed follow Leia to the Rebel base towards the end of the movie, the same logistics are in place there.

>Not if she was going there to get him, which is implied by, yknow, her message to him? Remember?

Well, two things. One, how fucking long was the Star Destroyer chasing them? A galaxy takes 100,000 years to travel at light speed (at least ours does). Primarily she was taking the plans to the Rebels. At some point she may have decided "Oh shit, Empire... Better head to Obi-Wan" but she'd have to have already been incredibly close - INCREDIBLY close - to begin with. It's seems far more likely that she realised the proximity THEN decided Obi-Wan was her only hope.

Then there's the thing that the pod crashes down at the nearest point yet it's within a few hours of Kenobi's house. Imagine throwing a fridge from the moon towards Earth with the intent of giving it to your mom... And it lands in the same city she lives in.

You need to capitalize important things, places, and people. You only do it once, IIRC.
So the first instance of "Galactic Empire" would be "GALACTIC EMPIRE" and "Ymir 4" would be "YMIR 4".
It sounds obnoxious but it helps get attention. That, and it's more Star Wars-y that way.

Why do you even need a catapult? On a planet it's to give it enough speed to generate lift, but in space that's not needed.

Didn't Babylon 5 have like the fighters on a rack that was turned down (aka. out) to launch and the centrifugal force of the spinning station coupled with maybe a little boost ejected the fighter into space? No long tube, just a hatch into space.
>>
>>44475886
Staff is fine, Jo staff (medium length Japanese) is a hybrid weapon that allows both sword and staff style techniques.

It is quite acceptable that if she was experienced in using that staff she would at least be comfortable with a sword.

Combined with Kylo already being shot in the side by a bowcaster and Finn dinging his shoulder, I have no issue with Rey winning a hard fought match with him.

IIRC, in BSG, it was a maglock catapult, designed so the Viper can jet out at combat thrust, while not jamming itself in the launch tube

>There's a funny thing in ANH where the Empire switches between wanting the plans and wanting the location of the Rebel base. At first it's purely the plans, no mention of base. Then they segue into just wanting the base. There's no reason behind it - they know the plans are in a droid, they just arbitrarily decide the base location is better now
What the fuck are you even going on about dude? Of course they are going to switch their priorities when the opportunity arrive. If you didn't happen to notice, the Empire's direct interest in finding who has the data tapes ends right when they find out exactly who is carrying them. However, the Millennium Falcon escapes them, so there isn't much they can do about it then. Seeing as they had no need to question Leia on the tapes they had already found, they are certainly going to switch their interrogation to finding the rebel base.
Then guess what becomes a priority again once the Millenium Falcon arrives at Alderaan.

Those are not Hands, just Inquisitors, they're often even worse than the hands were in the EU since they served Sheev via Vader rather than directly like the hands.

(Though hands got a powerboost directly from Palpatine himself, and lost a LOT of power when he died, inquisitors were at least independently powerful)

How can you tell that it's one day? The scene transitions never actually give us an idea of the time that passes over the journey. They're in space--for all we know, there could have been a few empty training days on the Falcon that weren't worth showing.

>almost impossible
Red Leader's shot was a near-miss. It was a tough shot but it wasn't some inhuman feat. The Force was just that little extra Luke needed to get it on his first try. If Red Leader had more torps, he would probably have nailed it through sheer quantity of shots. We also have no idea how the Y-wings would have fared with the shot because most of them died and the surviving Y-wing pilot was faffing about off-screen.

>>44477769

I'm pretty sure some of these designs are just Seinar eating Empire funding for executive bonuses.

Then some higher up with influence and a short temper tells them to make something worthwhile for a specific purpose and they scramble over themselves to actually work for a living. Though they do manage to put something decent together, but it's twice to three or more times the reasonable budget and the Empire ends up making them in smaller batches for more specialized operations and fleets, and the Seinar execs go back to exorbitant bonuses and the designers crawl back into a bottle until the next time the bosses call.

They had their glory days in their early runs, making the most of their fairly simple platform and revolutionary ionic drive system.

But soon they started their decline, unable to replicate the successes of their earlier designs, they just started coasting off derivative and variant designs, unable to truly come up with anything that really captured the elegant simplicity of their most successful designs.
