Are Kubica's F1 chances over? Surely Sainz is going to Renault if McLaren switch to Renault, and Toro Rosso to Honda? I find Sainz very uninspiring.

How can Mclaren survive as a customer team until the new regs in 2021? They're effectively allowing Red Bull to get a works deal if Honda comes good at Toro Rosso.

Why are people so confident Vettel will win at Singapore?

McLaren aren't getting Renault. Keep out of the brit delusion echo chambers, for that to happen:
>McLaren need to break their contract with Honda at a very high cost
>McLaren need to secure another team for Honda (STR is a bit of a pipe dream given that RedBull will want to keep the similarity between the team's now they have got it)
>RBR need to not veto the change (given how good the McLaren chassis is McLaren could overtake them if the chassis meme is real)
>the F1 management need to agree to the change of supplier past the cut off date
>the team's need to vote in favor of the change (back markers don't want to slip further down the rankings and top team's don't want a new team to rival them so that won't pass)
But mah powerful McLaren heritage deserve to be good. Pure delusion 2bh.
>>
>>78038936
I don't like McLaren - why have they been meeting with Renault over the weekend then? Red Bull probably have a better chassis than McLaren.
>>

>How can Mclaren survive as a customer team until the new regs in 2021? They're effectively allowing Red Bull to get a works deal if Honda comes good at Toro Rosso.

Renault supplies the exact same engines to their own team and to their customers

McLaren believes that they will keep doing it even if Renault builds a Championship winning car. RedBull does not.

Red Bull are looking at Honda as the 'independent power unit manufacturer' that they have been searching for.

RBR has the experience with implementing the 'in the loop' simulator that could help Honda improve the reliability of the power unit.

If the Honda power unit improves, they will put it in the RBR cars too.

So are RBR watching McLaren and thinking "Oh yea baby I want me sum of that Honda power"?

>>78039017
Sato was fucking carrying that team.
>>
>>78038955
I think it's a mixture of the new management saying hey we are different. They have most likely made promises they can't keep with Honda and their heads are on the line. And they seem to be shaming Honda trying to get them to drop out of F1.
>>78039026
It would be a long play especially with the rumor that the part they have struggled with the most (mgu-h) is going to be cut. The proposed regs sound like the Honda glory day regs.
>>78039004
They can sign all the deals they want it doesn't mean it's happening. There is so much more at play than McLaren making a deal.
F1 management needs to agree, they have pretty much said that if Honda doesn't have a home it's not happening. RBR has a veto, which I wouldn't be surprised if they used but Horner said they probably wouldn't. Because it's breaking a rule the team's get a say in if it happens, I would be very surprised if it passes the vote. McLaren need to pay out Honda And word on the street is that the Honda cash is keeping them afloat. And a team needs to say they will use Honda and sign a deal with them.
Until there is another team co firmed deal with Honda, it isn't happening at all because that's the weakest link atm.

Nah, it's clearly just that Grosjean's brakes are shit.
>Ricciardo
>Verstappen has been the quicker driver
On single laps/qualifying, yes. Verstappen is too reckless though. Every race there's contact with him and other drivers because he either has the spatial awareness of a potato (not Schumi) or because he's a sore fucking loser. Probably a bit of both.

>but Vettel who is driving against a grandpa?
Vettel is also driving against Hamilton and Bottas as their cars seem to be about equally matched overall. He has been more consistent than Kimi, Hamilton and Bottas.
>>
>>78042077
Do people still remember Montoya fondly back home? He was fast, but just a little too crazy. If he could have kept his head on I feel he would have been with a chance of a WDC. On the other hand it is nice to see a driver be stubborn & just walk away when he feels he has had his time
>>
>>78042146
Also imagine he'd have hated the whole hybrid/safety regs being pushed

people here think he's a douchebag because of his youngster days, even though he always showed love for the country.
But this is a football country, so most of the personalities that are not football players are disliked for minor mistakes.

At the time, there's more people that appreciate him for giving a "boom" to the sport, and specialists here lick his ballsack everytime they can so.

Overall, it's a 50/50 between casuals and fans, but lately more of a 49/51.
>>
>>78042146

an example of that boom would be this year's Indy 500, 3 of the 4 Colombians in the Top 10, and the other one finished 15th if I'm not wrong

Yes. Once the graphics card came back from RMA they found a fault with the motherboard and/or processor so I had to RMA those as well.

At that point I had enough and just bought a new processor, motherboard and ram. Once the other stuff comes back I'l have a back up.

No, they are professional karting drivers for factory teams. Not all karting drivers move to junior formulas. Some decide that driving karts and earning millions is better than moving to single-seaters and praying that you end up being that one guy who makes it to F1.

One example is Davide Forè who is 43 years old and still doing karting. Last year he was 2nd in German kart championship and he has won the world championship God knows how many times.

Every youtube downloader tells me "there's a problem" or "it is inaccesible".

But here's everything he says:

>We need to go there to see what needs to be done to bring it back up to F1 standards. That's what I did, I had a good look around the track and wrote a report about what I felt needed to be done. Now it's up to the potential promoters to see if they can actually get that done.

>As you would expect with every track that hasn't had F1 in 20 years, there are a few things that need to be done, but nothing massive. You would expect it to be resurfaced and probably new walls and things like that. But the main thing would be to make the track more interesting by using some of the old, very long circuit. That would make it a super track for F1 if it can be done.

>The plan is to make a much faster circuit than we used in the late 90s. They were given the green lights, I'm sure they can get the race in 2019.

>Hahahahahahahaha How The Fuck Is Being Beaten By Mercedes Real Hahahaha Nigga Just Make The Car Faster Like Nigga Bring Your Updates Haha

Waste of double dubs
The Ferrari car, like the Mercedes, was designed to make the best compromises between variables such as reliability, power, behaviour in the wet, downforce and much more. The tracks having different profiles the choice becomes: to which do we want our car to be adapted. That also means that sacrifices have to be made. Efficiency on high speed tracks such as Monza, Spa or Silverstone was one of these sacrifices.
Also the time off is, as its name implies, time off.
>>
>>78057891
I get that.

It's just frustrating seeing them finally outpacing Hamilton (admittedly mostly through better strategy) just to see him still pull into the points lead.

>>
>>78057906
The real issue is Mercedes' use of 1.2l of oil burninh per 100km for the works team.

AMuS (I think) claimed the FIA told Ferrari Mercedes would not bring a new spec PU before Monza, where the 1.2l 'limit' cut-off would happen.

So Ferrari never bothered to bring an updated PU to conform to the 1.2l limit - they and all other teams are limited to 0.9l of oil burning per 100km.

>>

>We'll do everything in our power to maintain the driver line-up we have today

>We're in a very fortunate position in that like the top three teams we've got two super talented drivers, and we're going to need that in order to battle for fourth place in 2018, or hopefully even go higher. So the last thing we want to do is to lose talent.

>Esteban is contracted with us effectively for three years, but two of them are absolutely secure. From a contractual point of view it's clear, and I don't think Esteban has got any ideas of wishing to go anywhere else at this point.

>You've got to remember that we identified the potential of Esteban some time ago, and we obviously took the opportunity where others didn't, including Renault, to sign him last year. We've now got the benefit of that, and we want to make sure that we optimise that

About that 2018 WDC..
>>
>>78060531
I think last time they used those was 1992, 1 year before Barrichello. Even if you are right, he had plenty of time to learn. Moving your foot from one pedal to the other costs you 0.1 seconds and at 300km/h that's 8.5 meters. Very crucial if you actually want to be competitive. It's extremely absurd and unbelievable why a racing driver would insist on not using his left foot, especially when he doesn't even have a clutch pedal. If I owned a team and a driver insisted on doing that I would kick him. He can go waste his talent and bleed precious miliseconds somewhere else.

Also low class rally and touring car drivers still have a stick shift, they operate all 3 pedals, they even sometimes use right foot to operate both brake and throttle at once.

Actually, manual boxes lasted till about '94-'95, with the struggling Forti team the last to use them.

The last manual H-pattern gearbox win was MSC at Spa '92, and that was in the Benetton, which was pretty much the 4th biggest team. Not hard to imagine some of the lower cars still having manual gearshifts the next year.

Why do people keep memeing the opinion that McLaren has a great chassis? There's almost no evidence suggesting their chassis is even on par with Mercedes or Ferrari at all, and it seems evident that Red Bull's chassis is much stronger as well.

Even on the most power-reliant tracks, the deficit caused by the engine that is the generally agreed upon consensus, does not account for the entirety of the laptime lost to Ferrari or Mercedes. Their chassis is fine, but it's not like some revolutionary masterpiece just because it has a cool looking nose.

I honestly don't get what they are trying to achieve with going to Renault. If they do this, it will be one of the dumbest moves, arguably even dumber than going with Honda in the first place. Not only will they have an engine that is unlikely to be as competitive as Ferrari or Mercedes (who are both still pushing their engine development btw), but they will be going head to head with Red Bull. They will have to develop a better chassis than Red Bull. Good luck with that. And even if they do, this will likely mean that they'll end up 3rd in he constructors with a few podiums and maybe a meme win. What's the point? Not to mention they would be losing 100 MILLION annually from Honda (not sure if this includes Alonso's salary) in addition to whatever the engines cost from Renault.

People also seem to have decided that McLaren was a great team up until Honda came along. They've been shitty since 2008, had a good car in terms of pace alone in 2012 and that's their highlights in almost the past decade. 2009 was horrible, 2010 wasn't fantastic, 2011 lol, 2013 lol, 2014 lmao mate. But yea sure this team that hasn't even been able to test their chassis at truly the limit of what the racing speeds currently are surely have a masterpiece on their hands because Alonso said its good in slow corners.
>>
>>78061185
at least with renault they can drive to the end of the race, and aren't forced to retire to save the engines.
>>
>>78061069
Looking at those throttle and brake traces, and remembering some of the team radios in the Merc era, he was being told by the engineers to not use the throttle and brake simultaneously quite often.
Maybe that played a part in his lack of pace in 2010, and as he adapted, got back upto reasonable speed by 2012.
>>
>>78061226

Yea and will they be winning championships is 2018? Nope. 2019, 2020? No. 2021 with a Renault engine, unlikely.

I truly don't get what their strategy here is, are they just temporarily trying to save face and battle in the midfield like in 2014 in hopes of it stabilizing their situation with sponsors and whatever else other than the racing itself?

>>78061287

Yeah that was a problem for him early in his comeback. He'd driven like that for all his career and with the newer cars and tires drivers are basically forbidden from ever doing so. I think Massa was told on team radio to not do it a year or two back as well.

>>
>>78061185

God-tier chassis is a meme for sure but overhaul their chassis is ok, in Monaco and Hungary they had an ok pace (not talking about Button) so it's not definetly as bad as the engine.
The choice to leave Honda is stupid in my opinion, but they know they won't win with Renault either but they'll start regaining an image by not retiring every race allowing more sponsor and likely a winning car by next formula, I wouldn't be surprised if the Renault deal lasts until 2020

I think it has to do with this telemetry in the video. Schumi's driving style harder on both tires and brakes, also uses more fuel. Nowadays brake temperatures, tire wear and especially the fuel usage is very important. as you can see from above, he drags the brakes or throttle open to minimize the weight shifting and maybe throttle lag (I don't know the regulations back then, I'm judging from telemetry) but this has a toll on increased brake temps and fuel usage. He also oversteers a lot, tire slip is always on the edge, as it should be for being on the limit. But the regulation changes forced him to drive conservatively, something he isn't able to.
I don't know about brake regulations, I think it's just precision engineering that doesn't have any tolerance for such excess actions but I'm talking out of my ass right now.

>Schumi's driving style harder on both tires and brakes, also uses more fuel

Actually, Ross Brawn went on the record multiple times to say that it was the exact opposite - that Michael could be really fast, while actually taking care of the car better. The exact quote was something like "He could be pushing to the limit, but the tires, brakes and engines and so on are not taking a hammering. He is actually better at managing those things".

Also, from his sportscars days when Brawn was at Jaguar and a rival - " We would only get worried when we saw Michael get into the car, because we knew he would be quick, while also using less fuel than the other drivers."

>But the regulation changes forced him to drive conservatively, something he isn't able to.

He came second in Barcelona '94 with a single gear (which was 5th out of 6).
He won Estoril '93 vs Prost in the dominant Williams by making one stop lesser than everyone else and taking care of his old tyres.
He finished one race in '96 where he had to cut off the engine (because of some problem, can't remember if brakes or engine temps) heading into corners and then restart it on corner exit, using the momentum, and experience from the sportscar days.
He won Montreal 2003 with failing brakes.

There was no throttle lag in the NA era.

Would Red Bull and Toro Rosso switch driver pairings if Toro Rosso would end up with the way better car?
>>
>>78062185
I think it's more along the lines of how racing drivers are the smoothest drivers because they know how to go fast, while normal drivers are harsh because they don't know how to be harsh. He knows how to abuse the car, thus better at saving it. But what I was trying to say is, since he isn't used to always doing it, he will have more trouble doing it full time.

>NA
I'm not talking about turbo lag. Throttle lag is always a thing, but I guess it's something very subtle in F1 cars, but still would make a difference. When you open and close the throttle body, air has to adapt to this and accelerate/decelerate. That's causing the lag. Unless you keep the body always fuly open (you absolutely can with direct injection, in fact that's how a diesel runs, and "runs away") there will be some time spent accelerating the air. For this reason racing intakes are either very short, or very long, but it's still not "instant". It's undoubtedly the best, but we are talking about 1/1000ths of a second.

No, but despite lacking like 80hp, they can still score points, something Sauber or Manor couldn't. So they should be better than the rest like you said so.
