Also, how are the spectators supposed to get to the track and park?
I've been to the track last summer, there is only one narrow twisty road that leads to the track, and there is almost no parking space.

>"Spirit of Le Mans" and all that shit.

The "spirit of Le Mans" stuff people are talking about is having to turn the car off when they pit.
Le Mans was originally intended as a test of reliability, so it's always had the rule you have to turn the car off when refueling, to prove your starter motor still works, and that your engine can still start when hot.

This continues under the current rules, and the car is only allowed to be started by the driver, once the mechanics are clear.

Because the starter was fucked and needed a tap to unstick the solenoid, the mechanics had to take off the rear clamshell, tap the starter, reinstall the rear clamshell, clear the car, then get the driver to try the starter, every time the car pit. Which took fucking ages.

If the starter motor still didn't want to work, they had to repeat the entire process from step one, which meant it took double fucking ages.
(If you watch the video >>76658601 they actually have to tap it again after it fails to start)

So to save time they cut a hole in the bodywork so they could tap the starter without having play bodywork hokey pokey.

The problem with cutting a hole though, is that the rear clamshell is a homologated aerodynamic part, which they aerodynamically modified, and that's why they were DQ'd.
>>
>>76659288
Exactly.

But people want to allow this as it is "ingenious" and "quick thinking", ignoring the fact it violates the rules.

"If the engine over heats then just run without the hood." is their train of thought.

No, go into the garage and fix your shit.

>>

>>
>>76660397

After a while I wondered if he meant (starter) motor.
>>
>>76660489
still a lengthy stop
>>
>>76660543

Depends how burried it is in the engine compartment, and how long left in the race (ie how many more pitstops with time lost removing bodywork you wouldn't have to do).

It should only be 2 bolts and 2 wires, so if it was accessible it would only take <5 minutes.
If you had to remove and replace a ton of shit to get to it though, it could easily be a 20 minute job.

Was actually thinking about it earlier, and was wondering what the gap was to the car behind when the problem first happened. No way to find out now though.
>>
Was single shot qualifying ever considered fair and balanced? What happened when it rained halfway through the session and the back markers were forced to do their lap in the wet?
>>
>>76660489
yeah that's what i meant

obviously swapping out the engine (as compared to "motor") is ridiculous - cheers for the explanation
>>
>>76660640

Yes
Even better, it was considered fair and balanced even with every driver putting the amount of fuel they wanted in the tank and it had to last for the first part of the race leading to kamikaze glory laps from backmarkers
>>
>>76660748
another reason we need refueling back
>>
>>76657989
How old is Victoria?
>>
>>76660640
it was shit because drivers that had later runs had a better track due to all the tyre material on the track
so let's say you had a mechanical error or got crashed out the race before and go out first or second the quali for the next race, you got screwed twice
>>
>>76661263
now that I think about it, in 2004 for a while or maybe the whole season they had a two shot quali where the first lap decides the order of the second one (they had one because the order meant a lot), however the first run the drove opposite result of the race before
>>
>>76661263
I thought the qualifying order was determined by championship points though? So that way back markers pretty much always had a rubbered in track. I completely missed F1 when they switched to that format so I have no idea what it was like desu
>>
>>76661329
it sure wasn't the case in 2004 and 2005
not sure about 2003 (first season before I started watching) and too lazy to do research, I just know they had a friday quali as well

That's my point. He's half-white too. And he was born and raised in Britain. His father was too. It's Lewis' grandparents (on his father's side) that immigrated from Grenada (his mother's side, of course, is pure Aryan).

I don't support someone like Mo Farah. I think that guy's a fucking cunt. He's literally always banging on about "why doesn't anyone accept me as British", when he was LITERALLY born in Somalia and grew up in Djibouti (he moved to Britain aged 8).

But that's not the only reason I think he's a cunt. I just think he's arrogant. And I don't really like running as a sport anyway.

>>76664969
No I support him because he's the British driver. Just like Germans support Die Mannschaft even though many of them aren't white (Mesut Özil, Jerome Boateng, Emre Can, Sami Khedira, Ilkay Gundogan, etc. - also I know there's lots of young up-and-comers who are black, but I don't know their names)

Speed record I guess..
>>
>>76666850
Yeah I definitely like it. It's got much more character than a lot of the shitty Tilkedromes. E.g. a track like China - I guess that circuit perhaps has more variety in terms of its corners than Baku, but it's just a soulless shitty place. And the track is just sterile. It's like Tilke just drew out some random shapes on a piece of paper and said "yup, that'll do".

Sure, Baku has lots of 90 degree corners at the beginning, but you can't really avoid that given the layout of the streets. But when you get to the old city section, it's actually very interesting. Tight twisty corners, going up and down as well. The old city section is tricky. And it's not just that one really narrow corner, the ones following it are tricky as well.

And yeah, I always think that the character of a circuit is a very important thing, and it's why I don't like China very much. The character of the surroundings I guess. And the surroundings in Baku are definitely unique. Very different feel from the other street circuits of Monaco or Singapore. So yeah, I like Baku personally. And I hope Lewis doesn't fuck it up this time.
>>
>>76666850
The only good part is the thight fortress section.
>>
>>76667299
thanks my shrimp barbecuing friend
>>
>>76667385
It's an exhibition circuit that's too narrow for the cars. I agree that Baku is a cool track because of the city, but that's it.
Maximising your line and carrying the optimum speed through multiple opposing sweeps is more difficult than managing braking points through successive hairpins or square corners. Turns 3, 6, 11/12, 14, and 16 at China are critical and many of these are complex compound turns that require careful trail braking and ballsy acceleration . Not to mention you can actually pass on it.
Baku is just a series of sharp turns in a narrow space. The driver either goes flat out, or is preparing to make a sharp turn with the exception of that one tiny downhill section. It's just braking points.

why would I not be aware of that rule that Jeremy "literally knows shit about F1" Clarkson made up? I was talking about McLaren whose road car division is much smaller yet seems to take a big toll out of their general engineering prowess.
Also Eddie Jordan seems to agree with me:

"They have been a shadow of their former selves since they arrogantly stated that Lewis Hamilton would rue the day he left McLaren," said the Irishman, now an outspoken pundit on British television BBC.

"That arrogance is still there at the top of McLaren."

Jordan said McLaren's road car programme is a fatal distraction but he also hit out at the team's "current management structure".

The F1 stayed on a similar trajectory until more recently but started failing before the road car factory. It seems more like strict formula = bad McLaren 2bh, they need their room to innovate things like they did with aluminium and later carbon fibre monocoque.

He may well have but current reports suggest that the major Sauber update for Monaco, which was his brainchild, 'made no improvements'.
Plus, the BGP001 was a car designed for a low downforce formula. So having an aerodynamically efficient car was more helpful than having more downforce coupled with more drag (never mind the diffuser loophole which meant net downforce was the same).
His approach might not be the best fit in the new, aero-heavy Formula

How do you guys choose who to root for? I've been a Williams "fan" since I was a kid because my dad bought me their flag and diecast models, but I find that over the years I end up just rooting for whatever team can break the dominance of another team... Considering there's only Haas to act as an amerilard's home team and no American drivers to cheer for it feels like I just pick whatever driver doesn't seem like an asshole and drives good. I assume most of you euros enjoy having countrymen to root for in the races, or do you guys just also choose whoever you feel like?

Definitely. It's very fucking loud, you can't even go fast. Maybe this is why we use them, those roads are very tight and twisty, noise unconsciously slows people down. Leaving it for a proper road is a feels extremely pleasing because all you hear is wind on such roads.

Also when I went to a GP and bought a Williams hat and showed it to my friend he said "Don't you like Ferrari though?" And he couldn't understand that I support Williams cause of my "history" with them even though I actively hope for a Ferrari championship, and that I bought their hat simply cause it looks way better than Ferrari's gear. To him you must only like one sports team and for a valid reason, no switching back and forth which I do understand but F1 is so voliatile - like how many legit mclaren fans are there left?

Legitimate question here:

Under the previous numbering system, in which the champion's team got 1 and 2, and then basing in the order of the Constructors Championship standings, the second team would get 3 and 4, the third 5 and 6 and so on, if the reigning drivers champion changed to another team mid season (say Alonso in 2006 to Midland), would they keep their numbers (18 and 19 in this case) or would the change to 1 and 2, making all the other teams change as well?
>>
>>76679495

The WDC would have always had number one and his team mate number 2, the former team would have got 3 and 4 and so on I Guess

the FIA probably never planned for a situation like that, Miguel. Presumably the champion and teammate would take 1 and 2 and everyone else moves down the order.

Not that it would have been a huge problem though, as the number is probably the easiest thing to change on a formula 1 car.

speaking of numbers, I was playing F1 2004 earlier tonight and the sauber and jordan have no numbers on their cars. looking at pics from that year, I can't see numbers on those cars anywhere, so did they really run the season without a number? hilarious oversight from the scrutineers if that's the case

>we already see gambling sponsorship in football codes. reckon it'll spread to motorsports too at some point.
Yes I know it's in football. F1 might see it as a bit low-brow though. I dunno. I've never seen gambling adverts in F1 before - no William Hill, no Coral, no Ladbrokes, etc., so I don't know why the web-based bookies would suddenly enter.

Perhaps part of the reason for their absence is the fact that there are few global betting companies. In fact I don't know if there any. Most F1 sponsors are companies that have global reach, that operate in markets across the world. Because F1 is, of course, not localised to a particular market, but is broadcast in tons of markets. The English Premier League, by contrast, is a product that is primarily designed for one market (even though it is also broadcast in other markets, of course).

Ted Kravitz on Rosberg "being the viscous one":
>"I'd love to know the full details of exactly what happened. Was that spin in Monaco in 2014 a fake, that we all think it was"
>blah blah blah
>"It does seem the history will turn out be kinder to Lewis Hamilton than to Nico Rosberg. I don't know were that leave us. Were we giving Rosberg too much benefit of the doubt?"

>Was that spin in Monaco in 2014 a fake, that we all think it was?
>a fake, that we all think it was

>Were we giving Rosberg too much benefit of the doubt?
>too much benefit of the doubt

Apparently absolute fucking zero benefit of the doubt was "too much".
>>
>>76690127
>viscous

More to the point
>British media
>benefit of doubt to Bossberg
The fucking delusion. They lack so much self-awareness. Every time a Brit goes up against someone for a championship, they slag off the opponent constantly.

It happened with Senna with his various run-ins with Mansell, it happened with Schumacher vs Hill (not to mention Williams and McLaren being British), it happened with Alonso in 2007 even though, as was later revealed, Lewis and Ron had equal parts in destabilizing the situation, and it happened with Rosberg. Arguably Vettel too, with the carbabby stuff, but Vettel hasn't proved himself to not be a carbabby yet. Maybe if he wins this season.

What I have really enjoyed this year and last year is with the commentary for the Americas Cup series is the British and American keep each other's biases in check. They still have a ""bias" to who they ask questions and things too but that's more because they know the people in their camp better. It really makes it so much more enjoyable because they focus on the racing and not who can bolster their country mens ego the most. They ask some really critical questions to their own guys and actually do their job. It probably helps they actually know a lot about sailing and what they don't know they ask people currently involved in the racing and listen to what they say.

>British and American keep each other's biases in check

The only decent programme SkyF1 used to make was the journalists specials (usually only annual season reviews).
They always had based German Michael Schmidt as a guest, so the Britcucks didn't have the balls to vomit up their usual Vettel pantomime villain bullshit arguments, because they knew based Schmidt would destroy them.
