fouls in the nba aren't about quantity. they're about WHEN and WHO. I'll give you an example. Let's say Curry and Durant get whistled for 2 fouls each in the first 5 minutes of the game. This will force Kerr to sit them both until maybe 8 or 9 minutes left in the 2nd quarter. Basically 12 minutes out. meanwhile the refs call 4 random fouls on the cavs. You've just taken 2 of the best warriors off the court for a whole quarter, and the cavs get 12 minutes to take advantage of it, likely running up a huge lead. Meanwhile called fouls are identical. That's why WHO AND WHEN is more important than HOW MANY when it comes to fouls.

There are other ways this works. Let's say the warriors are on a 9-0 run, then you whistle them for a few defensive fouls until either the warriors go into penalty or the cavs score a basket. For a whistle or two you can stop a run. you can stop offensive flow too.

And in the end the scorecard looks relatively "even"

Kyrie is a better all around Point Guard than Curry.

I would say better scorer and marginally better defender, he is way behind in facilitating though so I would say they are fairly even. The thing is Kyrie doesn't need to facilitate usually because James does it for him but if he didn't have James he would really need to learn how to facilitate better.
