That's a manufacturer gimmick that Indycar puts up with because no one would supply rubber for the series otherwise.

Technically, that was around in the CART days when teams could use different fuel maps on the fly, with one of them being a "Pass this Car NOW" setting.

>Sage Karam
Nigga, Sage is running in IMSA and getting paid to do so. No way he's going back to paying for the "Privilege" of getting 4th-string equipment at Chip Ganassi Racing.

It's good to have low caution street course races because they show off strategy really well.

It's been hard to say how Texas will be these past couple years.
I recall 2012-13 being exciting races, but naturally you don't want to pack up the field too much on any oval.
Last year Texas had me a bit nervous, when the race resumed in August I was still rather scared and the two drivers I'd root for were out.

it was just for the 500 and detroit. even though he definitely helped them with setup, his own performance was shit and he probably won't attract new sponsors. But maybe RLL will see how much it helped the team and stop hoarding money and run a 2nd car for him out of pocket.

Me. CART was GOAT until 2000, when Ganassi won Indy with Montoya and everybody started jumping ship and manufacturers either gave up or got fucked over by Tony George. (Ex: Ford being eternally ass-mad and refusing any involvement with Indycar today.) Ultimately, 2003 only Newman-Haas & Forsythe Racing were the last CART teams of note and most of the best teams were in the then all-oval IRL.

Also, the less we mention of ChampCar and Mark Plourde the better.

The Michigan open wheel race – once the U.S. 500, which was created to rival the Indy 500 – became an IRL event for 2002.

>In 2005, the series abandoned its unofficial ovals-only stance, and added three road–street course events. By 2009, the series had a roughly 50/50 split of ovals and road/street courses. Presently, the series currently runs one-third of its schedule on ovals and the rest on road and street circuits.

>>
>>76346496
>why did Andretti and Foyt trade Munoz for Sato?
It wasn't one move that happened clean like that. Munoz was known to be out for a while, then the Foyt thing was late since the series realized KV was not going to be there and they needed somebody to switch to Chevy to balance the numbers.

Sato was basically trying to get into any Honda team, I think SPM was a big possibility. As far as I know, Sato doesn't actually bring money from Honda anymore, it is more of a connections thing.
>>
>>76346496
That was probably a large part of it.
ABC supply, Foyt's primary sponsor wanted results as well and a team shakeup was going to need to happen.
>>
>>76346548
>Sato doesn't actually bring money from Honda anymore, it is more of a connections thing.

oh no don't get me wrong, AJ is untouchable. you always hear about Foyt, Mears, Unser winning the 500 4 times. Castroneves almost. and that's just talking about Indy Cars. Foyt is a racing legend, no doubt.

but how can a legend like Foyt have such a bad team year after year?
>>
>>76346475

To be fair, AJ hasn't really had his heart in racing since hhis dad died back in around 1980 or so. The team showed some flashes of speed back in the early 90's when they had Robby Gordon and then Bryan Herta drive for them, but the potential never was realized and they went to the IRL to hide the lack of professionalism that they had.

I kind of understand Jack Hawksworth's comments on why he went to race in IMSA over running another year with Foyt now desu.

>>76346519

Top guys can earn up to about $1 Million, maybe 2 if they win the Indy 500 and have juicy bonus deals.

I comparison, Alonso's salary for driving for McLaren this year alone could pay the yearly budget for almost every Indycar team COMBINED. Hell, he could probably start an Indycar team with his pocket change if he really wanted to.
>>
>>76346519
Alonso is not interested in a full time ride.
The only thing I'd like to see him do is a road course test sometime just to see what he thinks of it.
Indycars are extremely physical, combine the high DF with the lack of power steering and you're having to apply a sustained 50lbs of pressure to keep the wheel turned around a fast corner.
>>
>>76346575
I don't know if AJ doesn't have his heart in it.

THe recently-retired journalist Ed Hinton got his big break writing up a piece when Foyt was recovering from his crash at Road America that touched on why his passion for racing seemed to wane in the 1980's, but then got revitalized a little going into the 1990's:

Just because they're all the same chassis doesn't mean they're all equal cars or that there are some teams running them that are better-prepared than others.

To be fair, Sato had a tough time in Indycar because for every good run he had there was pressure to get every last ounce of performance out of a complete shitbox of a car (KV Racing in the old IR11 "Death Sled", Foyt and RLL in the DW12 both pre-and-post Aero Kits). Since going to Andretti, he's kind of settled down a bit and has arguably become the most consistent driver they have this year so far, Indy 500 win or not.

Could he have won Indy in 2012 with Andretti? Maybe. But so could a whole lot of others. What gets me is Sato qualified 4th and no one so much as spoke a peep about it or pegged him to crash out early.

>>76346713

I could see somebody like Tricky Ricc or Gimi starting an Indycar team for the fuck of it, because they're true gearheads that love the sport for good and bad... Or at least have that image.

>>76346853

We'll probably get even worse commentators for next year, because
the word on the street is the word was passed down to the ABC Broadcast Crew during the ESPN Cutback Announcement that they will be relieved of their responsibilities after the conclusion of Today's (Sunday's) Race. The rumor says ESPN told Indycar it would have to furnish its own crew for the 2018 Season
>>
>>76346784

even though NASCAR is choking on its gimmicks
>>
>>76346875

>>
>>76346875
Why the hell would they bither to do that, just give the whole contract to NBC. Nobody cares about muh tradition enough to make ABC lose the 500 a big deal
>>
>>76346875
Indycar radio or contracting NBCSN Crew is preferable.

We'll have a lot of TV package details by the end of the year, that's when negotiations are going to be done or nearly done.
>>
>>76346875
>he rumor says ESPN told Indycar it would have to furnish its own crew for the 2018 Season
So it'd be like Kevin Lee hosting with a couple drivers they'd probably just hire TB and PT if NBC would allow it and I don't see why now.
>>
>>76346875
>>76346903
>>76346906
>>76346902

To further add to it, if this in fact is the case it would appear that ESPN/ABC has breached its contract. So where do things go from here? There is one year remaining in the TV Contract between Indycar and ESPN/Disney. It is not as clear cut as many would have us believe. That is all broadcasting is shifted to the NBC Network. Just because a contract is breached doesn't necessarily mean the rest of the contract is void. It would be to everyone's benefit to see that a mutually agreeable settlement is reached. But that will rely on the willingness of the parties involved to attain such a settlement.

A few years ago Indycar CEO Mark Miles asked ESPN to relax the exclusivity clause in the Over-the-Air Broadcast Provision that was granted ESPN so that Indycar Races could be Broadcast on NBC TV. ESPN made it clear to Mark Miles that it would NOT grant such a relaxation. It then follows ESPN could declare to Indycar that despite its termination of the Indycar Broadcast Crew's it considers its contract with Indycar in full effect. This is where the fun starts ! How will Indycar react. it could 1) Proceed to hire in a crew and proceed as nothing ever happened. 2) Attempt to negotiate a mutually agreeable exit strategy with ESPN. 3) Initiate legal proceedings to get contract legally terminated and seek a damage award from Disney/ABC/ESPN.

>>76346881

Ford basically lets Penske build its own stuff though. Stewart-Haas are basically being groomed for the "Hendrick" role for Ford's NASCAR program and since the CEO of the whole dam company is such a staunch anti-Indycar guy...?
>>
>>76346930

Obviously step 3 would be the least desirable course for everyone and could drag on for an extended period of time.

Step 2 is the most likely course of action. But don't expect it to be immediate. It could take several months resolving it before the season ends would be a tenuous proposition. A more likely time frame would be sometime before the start of the 2018 Season. Indycar could make an arbitrary declaration to ESPN that the contract needs to be cleared up 60 Days prior to the start of the 2018 Season or it will start Legal Proceedings against ESPN.

Step 1 is definitely possible although not as likely as Step 2. This decision would come down to a judgement from the Hulman Board of Directors based upon their appetite for a Legal Battle with Disney.

Until stage 2 or 3 hits a resolution I would not expect NBC to involve itself with any Over-the-Air Broadcast of Indycar Races until the term of the current contract is exhausted as it would expose itself to legal proceedings from Disney. Maybe if a resolution is impending NBC might broadcast the 102nd Running of the Indianapolis 500 next year.

TL;DR There is a great deal of uncertainty in the Broadcast Schedule for the early part of the 2018 Indycar Season.

ABC/ESPN/Disney has an early termination clause if I understand it.

for the love of god can we please have NBC? thir camera guys/director do such a better job and we get based PT and TB.

I feel sorry for Allen Bestwick but honestly in Indy Cars, the main thing is to have good camera work/director and color commentators that know what they are talking about. the play by guy is almost secondary. besides; nobody will ever match Paul Page. Paul Tracy ia the grizzled veteran and Townsend Bell knows what's going on. TB drove a current car just last year in the 500. Eddie Cheever and Scott Goodyear are too old. they haven't driven an Indy Car since it was still a stick shift. now its paddle shifters.
>>
>>76347091
hate to say it but Paul Page is overrated purely because of nostalgia. Load up some races on youtube that he called and you'll see that he made a shitload of mistakes and was a good bet to say 1 or 2 stupid things in a race.

The other nice thing about Diffey, Townsend and Tracy is that they don't treat viewers like idiots(This is what we drivers call...), reference the 500 all the time as though it's relevant to driving at Belle Isle, they know who the drivers are and follow the season.

Dixon will keep going until he decides to retire on his terms, because Chip Ganassi loves his ass and built the current team around him.
>>
>>76347532
If the commentary is solid, then I don't see the issue.
A lot of people are cutting the cable these days so eventually companies are going to have to begin advertising online.
As Cable subscribers cut the cord, advertisers will stop buy ad space, stations will shutter, when enough of them go companies like Dish and DirectTV will be in trouble.

Nah, not likely. Honda want to go into DPi to use the NSX GT-D engine and Michael Shank, as good as they are, probably are going to do something else for next year so Penske seemed like a good bet.

Also, LMP1 is practically F1-Levels of complexity and money. That's how Nissan got fucked over when they tried it in 2015; They severely underestimated just how much goes into getting a car to work and spent like a fifth of what Audi, Porsche & Toyota were doing.

Some people asked why we don't do Green White Checkered like NASCAR does.

I disliked the red flag call yesterday to give you an idea of where I stand, but the reason Indycar doesn't do GWC is because we have a set race distance, that's the amount we're going to race to.
Not to mention it may as well throw the entire rest of the race out the window because it could alter the results worse than if they ended under yellow.
CART had races end under yellow, so has Indycar. I'm alright with it, that's apart of racing.

Who do you guys think it will be? Servia? Davison again?
>>
>>76361823
Probably Servia.
The man can serve ya.
>>
>>76361410

Absolutely Karam will return for it. If not, they'll hire a meme like Oriol Servia.

i'm amazed anyone cares enough to report it since the full race is online for free
>>
>>76362181
not the onboards with the radio
>>
>>76361410
I think this is the smart decision but come on they gave a private oval session to alonso but they won't to someone who needs it more than him? was there a specific reason they didn't grant the request?
>>
>>76362216
ah I see, that's a paid service i guess?
>>
>>76362237
According to Indycar this is a testing blackout period.
>>
>>76362264
the thing is if ESPN sended the strike it would ok, but by indycar? it's weird since they never had problems with fans uploading videos
>>
>>76362291
Interesting. Well he should still have a chance to get on an oval before seasons end
>>
>>76362538
strange, I wonder if they don't want alternative videos diluting the view count of their official video? But who knows. There is a paid Indycar service but I am not sure whether it includes in-car replays
>>
>>76352888
Pls make this happen indy

Well, that's a subject of some debate
>>
>>76347774
Would be awesome to see this
>>
>>76362598
It will be interesting to see him run the tricky triangle that's for sure
>>
>>76361889
Karam is just as much of a danger to the field as Gary kek
>>
>>76361408
It was definitely an impressive showing, but Bell Isle is kind of a meme track, let's see what he does at Texas this week (yes I know he won it last year)

Kys to be quite honest family

I really hope this happens, God knows we need more teams
>>
>>76346906
Honestly they should just feed in the radio crew like they do with the streams
>>
>>76346872
It's not much when you're talking about running 4 NASCAR cars and 2 f1 cars, but somehow I just doubt they want another new open wheel team while still trying to establish themselves in f1
>>
>>76346819
>We're done with ABC...
Wow...I didn't even think about this at the end of the race. Cheever and Goodyear are plebs but they were our plebs
>>
>>76362875
Nah Graham is finally coming into his own, you'll all see
>>
>>76353902
It's fine in NASCAR but I don't want it near my indy
>>
>>76352897
Especially since Perez has taken over his position as designated Mexican for a while it would seem
>>

nooope

How does one go about getting a job working on programming embedded systems for race cars? just something I'm kind of interested in
>>
>>76362647
there's no official onboard video, i hope at least they upload one
>>
>>76363323
This. Maybe they were >>76363185're plebs
>>
>>76363328
get a job with mclaren or magnetti marelli, they seem to be the go to for that kind of thing in race car everywhere
>>
>>76363348
Huh it's strange that they would take it down at all then. Who knows
