What a fucking legend

The US will never have something like this. Just a bunch of money grubbing cunts jumping from franchise to franchise. No affiliation, no heart, no pride.

2bh lad Totti is the exception here.
>>
>>76200336
To be fair, in the US even the franchises are jumping from city to city, so it's hard for Americans to experience true fanhood

99% of soccer players move to the same 3-4 clubs if they are ever good enough.

>as a little boy growing up in uruguay/scotland/africa/france/russia I always dreamed of playing for Real/Barca/Chelsea/Bayern

meanwhile the USA has its socialist salary cap rules so if a player is good enough they can actually spend their entire career on one team. Exception is baseball which is like soccer and everyone wants to go the the Yankees and get paid 200 million
>>
>>76200336
>>76200336
Totti stayed at Roma because it was a good fit.

He never had the talent to move to an elite club and should not be thought of in the same way as Giggs, Neville, Scholes, Gerrard, etc
>>
>>76201005
All of those players were tied to commercial franchises who have mere superficial ties to their respective cities.

The bond between the club, its fans and this fine specimen in particular is something Americans will never, ever be able to understand. That's why you will never see these kinds of emotional farewells in American sports.

Also, it's pretty sad that this barely happens in Brazil anymore, since Europe/Asia/Arabia will take any player that does a bit better than average.

Before Totti Roma was a mid table team who only won the league twice in the last 100 years. On a good year it would finish top 4 behind Juve and the two Milan teams and on a bad year it would finish 10th. Totti staying in Roma, a mid table team not only proves his loyalty but also allows Roma to build an empire around him. Batistuta, Cafu, Montella, Candela, etc would never go to Roma if it wasn't to play with Totti. De Rossi would not stay in Roma forever if it wasn't for Totti as role model. While his effort fall short with 9 Serie A runner ups and only 1 actual win, at least having Totti allows Roma some steadiness and to maintain being a semi big club, attract young star players rather than ebb in and out like any mid table team would do (Leicester cough cough). The notion that Roma is now a bigger global brand than the two Milan teams is unthinkable in the 90s and this is singlehandedly due to Totti.

People can name Giggs, Iniesta, Xavi, Gerrard, Zanetti, as equivalent but in this case it's really not. They all already playing for top team since the beginning. Totti not only pulled himself by his own bootstrap, he pulled the whole team up another echelon, from mid table team to being a constant title contender every year with global outreach. Roma would forever be indebted to him and you can't really pick another single athlete in the world of team sports who did what Totti did. He singlehandedly build an empire of the club that he loved out of ashes.

Giggs had the Nevilles, Beckham, Scholes, and Nicky Butt to back him up, on top of already decent top flight team with the likes of Peter Schmeichel. You can argue that Giggs' generation build Man Utd to what it is today, or even the whole EPL with Beckham's shirt sales being the main driver of the change, but unlike Totti Giggs didn't do it alone.

He attracted great players to Roma, from 93 to 99 Roma finished 6th to 10th as mid table team. He had absolutely no help. Only when Totti grew to be a superstar at the ripe age of 22-23, top players like Montella, Cafu etc flock to Roma purely because of him
>>
>>76205329
What's amazing about all those second place finishes is during that scandal that got Juventus regulated the investigation showed Roma to be the only club not to partake in the practices the other clubs were guilty of and while the Milan teams were the worse of the bunch it was Juve that got the punishment

True about Giggs, I would just add that United benefitted from having a good coach like Ferguson that actually stayed long enough to have some sort of consistency something Roma didn't have and no I don't think any of the Roma managers have been up to par to challenge Juve

Ferguson also improved United's youth system something Roma hasn't done

Real Madrid always treat their stars like dirt. Raúl had to wait three years until proper homage was paid to him. Roberto Carlos, Guti, Zidane, etc were never thanked properly in due time. The last legend leaving the club, Casillas, saw this crap coming so he decided to bid farewell by himself in front of the press without any club representatives.
>>
>>76206601
Ok I admit I had my fact wrong about Cafu. In my defense though, Roma signed him fresh from Brazil so he's still an untested South American who never played in Europe.

Other than Cafu though, noone else was truly world class and Totti had to carry the team on its own until he became big enough to attract Montella, Batistuta, etc

The point is that Real Madrid "fans" don't even like football. They like Madrid's success, as if being a madridista would somehow connect them to that success. They don't mind being hated either, and they unironically believe that this hate is due to jealousy. People aren't jealous of their or Barça's titles, people are angry that they are among the main culprits behind modern football. The game we grew up loving has been destroyed by the likes of Uncle Flo and the Qataris.

I remember Charles Woodson's last game in Oakland, and he was getting a standing ovation and people were crying.
This was even after he left to go play in Green Bay

Proving you're a mong. Cruijff is literally the entire reason Barcelona are as good as they are today and they definitely know it.

In lesser sense:
Pavel Nedved (Juventus)
David Trézéguet (Juventus)
Ronaldinho (Barcelona)
Gianfranco Zola (Chelsea)
Thierry Henry (Arsenal)
Patrick Vieira (Arsenal)
Robert Pirès (Arsenal)
Dennis Bergkamp (Arsenal)
Edwin van der Sar (Manchester United)
Nemanja Vidic (Manchester United)
Patrice Evra (Manchester United)
Marco van Basten (AC Milan)

I can carry on.

NBA has a big number of players who choose their hometown teams.
Lebron to Cleveland. Wade to Chicago. Melo to New York.

Sorry, but Totti didn't hold a live press conference TV event announcing he was "taking his talents to Turin" at any point in his career. Using Lebron as an example of a loyal player is retarded.

The Decision was an example of all the worst aspects of pro sports.
>>
>>76208727
yup. the vast majority of american athletes do exactly as i said.
>>
>you never got to see Manuel Neuer getting lobbed by Totti from the midfield line
>>
Listen, snowflakes, no player is more important than a club. Raul was heavily declining, no sane person would pick him over C. Ronaldo. Guti was shit, Casillas was AWFUL later in career, numerous other examples. The only thing they did wrong was Makelele, but he was hardly a legend. What's the point of paying millions to players in their mid-30s, they're just a waste of space. For every Ryan Giggs there are 30 Ronaldinhos.

Maradona at Napoli created an even bigger cult of personality around him. He's really the only one I'd rate above Totti in terms of legacy, mostly because while Totti was a king, Maradona became a god.
