I think it's this. People will deny it and I think they even have their points, but I think in reality this is why it doesn't feel that way.

First round KO's don't often feel like you've outclassed your opponent, unless it's been a beatdown. Werdum, Overeem, JDS, great wins and unbelievable to do it in Round 1, but at the same time it devalues it a bit and just makes it look like "oh he just has heavy hands"
That's not true obviously, but it feels like that, especially with the aging Heavyweights these days.

I think that's why it doesn't feel like he's in that conversation.

Actually in terms of grappling Maia matches well against Woodley


Going by his MMA performance and college wrestling career. Woodley strives at the neutral position, that is neutral stand up and foused on developing an explosive double leg and defensive scramble from stand up.This let him focus on his striking in his MMA career.

One of the gaps that i feel Woodley struggle in (and Maia hinted in the post fight conference) is his poor riding and counter riding abilities. In college he would wrestle hard and stall out his opponent on the ground so he could get a stand up and work his takedowns.

You dont see Woodley on the ground getting wrestler ride at all so far, or even scramble a lot from the ground to standing.

In the Wonderboy fight (i think it was the first one) Woodley was rather clumsy/clunky trying to keep Wonderboy down and fumbled not only a basic wrestler ride on Wonderboy (and honestly no disrespect to Wonderboy but his ground game has no concept of how to counter rides) but fumbled a basic concepts like front headlock/guillotines


Maia has the advantage with his style of MMA wrestling relying on the single/half guard and his back take to wrestling ride combo.


Now of course Woodly has insane power and can just KO Maia before any of the offensive set Maia can do. But saying Maia has no chance is foolish. Maia has probably 2 paths of victory and Woodly is extremely exploitable with one of the paths to victory

What Maia does well in MMA is controlling and stifling the scramble

What Woodley does poorly in MMA is control scrambles.

One other thing i wonder is Woodley's footwork. Masvidal has really good footwork and it showed last night in round 3 and 2 with Maia waiting out to find a wall to start his takedownset. I wonder if Woodly having a grappling background will indulge Maia or struggle lining him and Maia up to pop him with his strikes.

Again one of the huge things to counter Maia is good footwork to prevent him from starting his takedown sequences. No wall means Maia works extra hard to wrestle in the middle.

Woodley is the type of grappling that prefers to grapple in the middle without the aide of walls stifling his explosive speed/strength

Tyron vs. Maia will be more boring vs. Tyron vs. Thomphson 2. Woodley literally killing the division.

He's more then just BJJ he has combine wrestling into his grappling but what makes his wrestling interesting to study is its design for MMA.

On the most basic level his wrestling is ugly and even kind of bad on a technical aspect. But in terms of MMA its next level.The way he uses cage walls, the way he manages space its really cool.

A majority of BJJ players are sports BJJ minded You see a huge proliferation of leglocks and other BJJ meta game tools used in MMA.

Maia on the other hand really forgoes that, uses stuff like half guard and wrestling rides to minimize his damage and maximize his opponents.

Jacare already beat Maia, but i feel Jacare is more in touch with the high end sports BJJ ruleset/competition then Maia, he did compete later and more often then Maia.


MMA wise that be neat. I think even at catch Jacare is the bigger stronger man with better technical striking.

My comment about being in the middle is referencing his college style of takedown, where his big blast double needs breathing room to launch against other grapplers. He does have what like 3 or 4 takedowns off the cage wall but those were against strikers when their backs were against the wall.
