I would love to do it if I had the time. So many options for the route to take. Depends how long you have. If you want to save money do eastern Europe, so much cheaper.

I did it four years ago for a summer. I highly recommend it (not Scandinavia though, unless you have money to blow).

started in Norway, made way through Sweden and Denmark, then flew to Croatia and took a ferry to Italy. Rode from Italy through to Spain.

I never felt unsafe. I would have started in something like Prague or Germany though, instead of Scandinavia. It's just too expensive, but still very nice I'll concede.
