I really want to get interested in cars/motorsport, however I don't have a driving liscense, don't have lots of disposable income and haven't watched racing since I was a child.

1. How do I learn how a car works? (Tried watching F1 and have no idea what all the terms mean, no idea how a gear box works tbqh)

2. What are essential non-F1 racing series worth watching? (NASCAR, Le Mans?)

3. Is it really worth getting into this knowing I'll be driving a VW Polo for the next 3 years and torturing myself looking at nicer cars?

4. Are bikes/Moto GP a meme?

5. Do you root for teams or individual drivers? How do I pick a team?

Just follow F1 and fuck the rest. You'll never drive anything close to resembling an F1 car so you'll be fine with your Polo.
t. 1995 E36 318

I can give you a rundown on the teams if you want. If you support a team or a driver is entirely up to you.

>How do I learn how a car works?
Scuderia Ferrari facebook page has short videos explaining parts of the car for dummies
>>
>>75047835
>2. What are essential non-F1 racing series worth watching?
Formula 2 (known as GP2 until this season. junior series for F1, absolute pure kino)
Formula E (basically F1 but slower and electric with very talented field of ex-F1 and Le Mans drivers and super entertaining close racing)
>>
>>75047835
>How do I learn how a car works?

>What are essential non-F1 racing series worth watching? (NASCAR, Le Mans?)
I'd say WEC internationally. As a kiwi I also keep up with V8 Supercars, and Indycar because Scott Dixon
>Is it really worth getting into this knowing I'll be driving a VW Polo for the next 3 years and torturing myself looking at nicer cars?
Sure it is. I drive an utter shitbox and I can still appreciate nice cars. If anything it makes you appreciate the nice cars more
>Are bikes/Moto GP a meme?
They are to an extent here but the racing can be legitimately good
>Do you root for teams or individual drivers? How do I pick a team?
Drivers myself. I support Gimi because memes, though I've always had a soft spot for Ferrari because they won the first F1 race I ever went to at age 5 (2001 Melbourne GP). Outside of F1 I tend to just support kiwi drivers
Also don't be a Mercedes or Lewis Hamilton fan here or you'll get destroyed

TOP TEAMS
>Ferrari
Have been in the semen slurping sport since forever, biggest fanbase. Likely to have a good car but also spilling spaghetti because muh Italian way. big budget. Last 'hip was 2007
>Mercedes
The team itself is as bland and generic as it gets, they are the best right now though because they had major influence on the engine formula. plus they have the biggest budget. Won 2014-16
>Red Bull
Very entertaining drivers, team principals can go suck a dick. Have the weak Renault engine, the car itself is great most of times. Won 2010-13

MIDFIELD
>Force India
Team principal is an Indian tax evader hiding in England, their car is pink lol. Despite having not a lot of money they improve yearly, last year they got P4 in the final standing. Mercedes enigne.
>Renault
Money out the ass but only returned to the sport in a last minute takeover 2016, they are still in the process of rebuilding a competitive team. Expect them to improve most throughout the year because money. Their engine is mediocre.. Won 2005-6
>Williams
Tradiotion, cool livery, haven't been relevant in quite some time, only in 2014 when the Mercedes engine gave them an edge. Their pit crew are fast as fuck. Drivers are interesting because old fuck out of retirement plus young rich kid with no talent
>Toro Rosso
Red Bull's junior team. Not much to say about them, they are just there most of the times. Their new car is a beauty.
>HAAS
USA! USA! USA! Joined last year and were better than anyone expected because Ferrari helped them a lot. First American team on the grid since forever. Their new car looks good and fast desu. Did I mention they're American?

BACKMARKERS
>McLaren
Used to be a big deal, tradition, titles and what not, but decided to team up with Honda as engine supplier in 2015. Have struggled for pace since then and are only good for memes. Trouble with the japs every other week.
>Sauber
Celebrating their 25 year anniversary. Pay drivers, principal incompetent curry woman.

Sauber have 2016 Ferrari engines and are poor af. Only good thing about them is based Gio the Nazi
>>
>>75047865
>Ferrari
Oldest team in F1, been around since the start and have a lot of bargaining power as a result. Tend to be good but often under perform. have the most wins, Drivers' Championships and Constructors' titles but haven't won a Drivers' Championship since 2007 Constructors' title since 2008.
>Mercedes
The team to beat since new regulations mandated the use of turbo engines in 2014. They compete under a German license but they're based in Brackley.
>Red Bull
Based in Milton Keynes and owned by Red Bull. Sponsorship money and the fact they have Adrian Newey design designing their cars have meant they've been a competitive team since 2009, winning titles in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013.
>Scuderia Toro Rosso
Based in Faenza, Italy and owned by Red Bull. Effectively function as Red Bull's junior team. The name more or less means "Red Bull Racing" in Italian
>Renault
Formerly competed under the Lotus name until they ran out of money and got bought out by Renault, Currently in a rebuilding phase as they transition to the new ownership
>Haas
An American team and as such is popular here. Engines are built by Ferrari and chassis by Dallara so they're more Italian than anything else. Seen by some as a Ferrari junior team as they have an engineering relationship
>Sauber
Formerly competitive midfield team that has had money issues for the last several seasons and as such is at the back of the pack. Celebrating 25 seasons in F1 this year
>Force India
Operates with an Indian license but is based in Sliverstone. Often punches above their weight
>Williams
Formerly competitive team that won titles in the 80s and 90s. Hasn't been truly competitive since they lost their factory BMW engine deal in 2005. Been semi-competitive since getting a Mercedes engine deal in 2014
>McLaren
Founded by a kiwi but based in Woking. Formerly competitive , won titles in the 80s and 90s, but haven't won a title since 2008 and has recently gone to utter shit thanks to their Honda engine deal.
>>
>>75047922

>>
>>75047933
>What the hell happened to McLaren?
They had Mercedes engines in 2014 when they got their last podium, but decided that they will never have a chance on winning the 'hip as long as there is a works team using the same engine.
Thus the Honda partnership, big gamble that didn't pay off.

>Will any new teams join in the next few years?
Unlikely. F1 is ludicrously expensive nowadays, and almost every team on the grid came from buying out older teams (excepting Williams, Ferrari, McLaren and Sauber
For instance Mercedes used to be Brawn GP, which used to be Honda F1 which used to be BAR which used to be Tyrrell.

Since 2015 because of Honda shit engine they are backmarkers but they claim to have a GOAT chassis, in 2014 they had the best engine but somehow the chassis was shit, probably they are shit in every field now, but they have muh Alonso is the best driver meme.

>Will any new teams join in the next few years?

It's rumored Alfa Romeo might come back as proper Ferari junior team but who knows, lately VW attended the FIA meeting for the new engine meaning they might be interested when engine formula will change ca 2021, probably as Audi. No idea about provateers tho
>>
>>75047933
>What the hell happened to McLaren? Didn't they used to be top-tier?
Mercedes, McLaren's longtime engine supplier, started their own F1 team in 2010 (buying out Brawn, 2009 champions, which used to be Honda)
McLaren then slowly started getting less preferential treatment from Merc as Merc ramped up their effort
McLaren also started becoming really shit at designing the aerodynamics around that time
Lewis Hamilton left McLaren to go to Mercedes in 2013
McLaren haven't won a race since then
In 2014, McLaren were using their own fuel mix instead of Mercedes's recommended one, it cost them 40 horsepower because McLaren are idiots
Then McLaren decided to switch to Honda engines in 2015, because they weren't going to win races with a Mercedes that was inferior to the actual Mercedes
Honda are absolute horseshit, made an engine that was not only slower than a 30 year old Ford Fiesta but also exploded every 5 laps
Remarkably, Honda have actually gotten WORSE in 2017 instead of improving like everyone else in the history of the fucking sport has done

>V6's just drone, to my knowledge there's never been a V6 that really screams no matter the RPM.
Well that's another problem. I think the Ferrari Dino's sound nice, and some of the Alfa V6's, but no V6 can really compare with the Ferrari V10/12 which is what people generally want. That high pitched scream doesn't really come out in a V6; perhaps because of the angle or the firing order, because Alfa/Ferrari's get closer then Camry's and Commodore's (which sound atrocious).

I hope F1 goes back to displacement but not cylinder config, so we get V8-12 and I4 etc.

It's basically sure he's a next-level genetic engineered baby that will be born for racing but Williams genes aren't required and by the age of 40 pretty weak too, my bets are on Susie Wolff and Valtteri. haven't watched F1 for quite some time now, what are the odds of Kimi winning the championship?
>>
>"Hasegawa said he thought Honda's new engine would match Mercedes' 2016 power levels by start of this season, but a glut of pre-season reliability problems held McLaren-Honda back and escalated tensions within the alliance."

>""As a matter of fact we were thinking [it was] too easy, and it was too difficult to achieve the new technology – that was my mistake," Hasegawa told Motorsport.com.

>""We have huge vibrations," added Hasegawa, who says Honda's new engine currently produces "almost the same power" as the 2016 unit. We did some good progress in the mono-cylinder on the dyno, but as soon as we complete the V6 engine we had many issues. What we achieved in mono-cylinder is at a very good level, but when we transfer exactly the same specification to the V6 engine it doesn't work. We are very disappointed. But it was too late that we noticed that – at Christmas."

the public hates mallya because he turned all his business (which employed millions of people) into shit and fled with lots of unpaid wages remaining

he also conned several state-run banks, which nearly everyone has accounts in, into giving him ridiculous loans worth INR 40000000000 (408 million pounds) and left them all unpaid

when the banks tried to auction his property off, they either failed to make any money or outright failed to sell because:
>(rumour) he is friends with goons/mafia/politicians
or
>his properties were overvalued and now are basically worthless pieces of shit nobody's willing to buy

so because of all this, the banks created new shitty policies and cut interest rates to cover their huge losses. the public suffered from all of this and mallya became a hugely unpopular figure.

i'm not sure if he will be deported because I don't think the government is pursuing his deportation hard enough. they are a bunch of industrialist-financed do-nothings and probably won't go after him because he's got "contacts" in the right places

TEAMS THAT WILL GO BANKRUPT BEFORE WINNING ANOTHER RACE IN F1 (aka teams that will "refocus" their efforts to Formula E because it is a "great opportunity")

I'll start

>Williams (practically primed for Formula E at this point)
>McLaren (practically primed for Formula E at this point)
>Sauber (will just get CURRY'd)
>Haas (Gene will die/lose interest because they are at best the 4th best team after 5 years in the sport)
>Renault (already doing the double whammy, but will likely drop out from F1 when people finally realize French cars are shit and they stop buying them)

Force India will never go bankrupt because of based business mastermind and God of Financial Security Vijay and WILL win a race this year. Also in all seriousness even if Vijay gets busted and deported back to poo training land it might not affect Force India too much as the team is supposedly more or less financially "independent" from Vijay's personal money and problems at this point

I know this is an incredibly entry-level question, but I honestly don't know the answer.

Why hasn't F1 gone into 4WD at all? It is pretty common in many other motorsports and not exactly a new technology.

I'm not saying F1 would be better if it was 4WD, it just seems strange it hasn't been even a discussion. Lot of manufacturers barely fucking make RWD's anymore

>It is pretty common in many other motorsports
Rally and some prototypes is it I think? Otherwise most things are RWD

I think it's because karts are RWD, everything between is also RWD. Some older F1 cars were AWD, but it was banned because the FIA hates fun, and they were all unreliable and heavy. If they put it in, 50:50 AWD understeers, and variable ratio would be against the rules and exploitable so you could get TC.

If F1 goes to AWD I presume it will be hybrid and have electric motors driving the front wheels.
>>
>>75050700
I'm working all weekend so yeah it won't be great.
>>
>>75050683

True, but it's not like F1 regulations have been about making the cars harder to drive.

The current cars are "hard" to drive because of the physical strain and the various non-driving managements and settings you have to adjust at all times. Prior to this, the biggest difficulty for the drivers was likely due to the tires and them being massively grip limited compared to the power of the car.

Cars from the 80s and 90s look from a different planet when it comes to control, or lack of. Pushing those cars on the limit actually looks dangerous, nowadays its very smooth and precise even at the very limit which is 1 lap in Q3
>>
>>75047835
You should look into club racing.

>flag
Something like Stock Hatch would be good for you. You need 750MC membership, but that costs peanuts, generally they tend to race old boy racer cars (Saxo, 106, Corsas?), obviously you have to prepare it but that shouldnt be too much...

Would have suggested Fun Cup too but those cars are expensive

>>
>>75050725

Thanks, yeah, makes sense. Again, I don't think it would make F1 any better. The amount of programmability and on-the-fly adjustability current F1 cars have when it comes to power delivery and various other things, the teams would probably just program the diffs and whatever else corner by corner and effectively get what you said, de facto TC and basically infinite grip through corners.

I personally think F1 (or some form of racing), should go that way, and allow all the tech that was banned in the early 90's. The problem then was Williams were way ahead of everyone, but now most of the tech is old and could be developed by Uni students with Arduinos.

But, I don't predict it would happen, based on the way the FIA do things under Todt. And if it did happen, I do want something to keep 'traditional' formula racing alive.

Basically, I wanna live in the Cyber Formula timeline.

Mechanical losses and drag. It's only common in rallying because you're on loose surface and desperate for stability and traction. That's why RWD rally cars didn't live long. On track, you are always static, always stable, always under best condiions. 4WD WILL get you launch faster, no doubt. But you need to add two differentials and other moving mass, parasitic losses via drivetrain increase drastically so while you gain on first gear, you lose everything else. Solution to this is moving the engine back to press the rear driven wheels firmly on the ground. You also get increased traction with throttle via weight transfer too, opposite of what our cars do.

Simple comparison, FF would get wheelspin around 0.4g, RR can do over 0.7g. AWD can be even better, but you lose power to spin the drivetrain. Also on track you want slight oversteer, 4wd is neutral (behaves like both depending on the scenario), fwd is understeering.

>>75050683
No. And same can and has been done with suspension or differentials too. 4WD isn't different.
>>
>>75050857
>Cottesloe
Literally where?
>Giulietta QV

>>
>>75050859
>Solution to this
wew lad I accidentallied a whole sentence.
Normal RWD's have inferior acceleration to 4WD's, but superior power via having less drivetrain drag. To reduce wheelspin and get faster launches, rear engined rear wheel drive is a thing. Which is what F1 is. Drag racers are all RR. With their special wheels they don't get any wheelspin despite having thousands of horsepower.

Even if 4WD was legal, no manufacturers would use it. Drag is painful. Imagine 10% of horsepower going there.

It's regarding proposals to change Monaco. One idea was to lengthen the circuit to France and back. Apparently it was the most likely solution.
>>
Do you think F1 would ever allow ground effect aero again?

The vast majority of the circuits are absolutely smooth so the performance benefits would probably be massive given it's a much less draggy way to produce DF.

In order to achieve the "screaming" engines you had from the early ninety's until 2013, you would need more cylinders.
The Ferrari in 1995 used a V12, but it only needed to be at 14,000~ RPM to be screaming, that was its upper limit at the time.
The V10 era saw engines at around 18,500~RPM, very comparable to the sound of the V12 yet.
The Beginning of the V8 era had the highest revving engines period at 20,000+ for some engines. Despite this, they didn't sound as aggressive as engines from the two previous Formulas.
And now we've reached the V6 era. Even if you were to match the RPM of previous era's it would not produce the same sound until you reached 24,000~ RPM(you can test various sounds by speeding up F1 footage accordingly)

At this stage they would unironically be better off having Merc send over one of their 2014 Merc power units and making an exact replica of that and then maybe go from there

I mean from what I understand, the Renault, Merc, Ferrari PU's are all more or less "similar" in terms of philosophy. Like how can Honda not figure this out? You would think the sheer embarrassment would cause them to go full autismo and make the best engine on the grid just to try and avoid the sudoku

People laugh at Ferrari for being a bunch of over-emotional spaghettiniggers who just mammamia all over the place and need a midget French man to lead them to any sort of decent level, but so far they've managed to make an engine that was already pretty good in 2015 and is now looking to be more or less equal to the Merc. And now they managed to make a car that is close to being the best on the grid, without the help of James Allison either. What the fuck is Honda actually doing? Just fucking hire Mario Illien and get it over with

So, the main part of the article said they wanted to change the pit lane position moving it after the new chicane after the tunnel and using as race track the other side of the road (the one where Kimi likes to park his car), they said it missed the approval of CSI (?) but it was almost certain, it was not as we all know.
Regarding the changes:
>Option one
Putting two chicanes at the swimming pools, judged too dangerous because of waves invading the track in case of bad weather and too expensive. We got this one.
>Option two
The second one, set to exlcude Mirabeau haute, was not likely to happen because it would block an important part of the city.
>Option three
After Mirabeau Bas, instead of heading to the tunnel with the turn where Senna crashed head where Kimi parked his car in 2006 I guess and then come back after a long hairpin, the article doesn't mention any problem with that option.
>option four and more likely to happen according to article
Is like option 3 but longer, it would have 3 new chicanes and it would go to france for a bit.
This project would have allowed 15k more spectators.
Stewart saw all the projects and was more enthusiast about the last one saying it's the one that will allow Monaco to survive, told the organizers that one day they will need a sponsor and this sponsor will want to be grant that the race would survive for at least 12 years and without that change Monaco would have survived only for 3/5

That's pretty much it, didn't translated word by word because it would just explain more the changes you can see in pictures
>>
>>75051464
My 2c, every Indian I did a project with back on uni passed off responsibility, expected me to do all the work and they talked to each other during tests cheating. For example they for some reason think that their ~1000 words in a 8000 word assignment are equal to the 7000 words I did so we would actually pass. And they would blatantly talk to each other and look at each others results in tests.
Every project I would meet up with my lecturer and tell them what's what and that I did 80+% of the work. No one wanted to be picked with one of them in a group.
Apparently it has to do with the class system in India and certain groups think they are better and us whites should serve them (or that's what one lecturer told me) so the guys I have done work with could all have been from the arsehole class that thinks that.

If they stay with Martini, what can they do? Martini is paying for it, so if Martini doesn't change it, what can Williams do? Dump the sponsorship just because of the livery being overplayed?

If for whatever reason, Williams switch to a different engine manufacturer, say Ferrari, I hope Martini adjusts accordingly tho

There's no reason why they can't change up the stripes every few years.

Williams could easily ask Martini if they wouldn't mind if they ran the stripes, for example, from the airbox, down to the sidepods and along the side of the car to the nose, instead of the current arrangement of running them from the nose, up around the driver and finishing on the fin.

I'd illustrate it but I don't have a F1 car template.
