/crow/ here, while I thoroughly dislike POOrt and don't consider the culture/fanbase to be the same as the old POOrt Magpies club, I'll accept that they're essentially the same club.

Perhaps legally/technically the AFL had to officially form a new "POOrt" club, but it was essentially a cultural relegation from the SANFL to AFL. It was people high in the POOrt Magpies FC that pushed it, and many initial POOwer fans were those from the SANFL. Of course many of the fans now have nothing to do with the original SANFL club as they've grown and produced a meme culture, and only a slice of those who work within it are associated with or are from the original club.

As for the premierships, I think the slate should've been wiped clean when the AFL formed desu. There's very little to suggest that the SANFL was of lower calibre than the VFL until the later years (80's) when population growth and money accelerated VFL's growth and players from interstate moved to play. Check out the Champions of Australia competitions and you'll see S.A. teams won just as many times as Vics.

I think it's very reasonable to suggest they were moving interstate for financial reasons. As I said, Victoria was obviously a larger state, and the VFL had more teams and money, and it became a pretty smart decision to move to Melbourne to play football and make money if you were a good player. This sort of system accelerated the rise of the VFL and decline of SANFL in the '70s and '80s and yes, by the '80s I think the VFL was a higher quality league. VFL teams lost to SANFL teams, and many champions of the game played VFL and SANFL, or even SANFL alone; so not sure how you're saying SANFL is comparable to women's footy unless you're saying VFL teams were bad enough to lose to women's teams.

I think it's much more to do with relevancy: SANFL records are as relevant to GWS as VFL is to POOrt. The league has been becoming more and more national and there's no exact point to choose, but 1990 is as definitive a point as we will get since it was the league literally saying "Hey guys, we're national now". Perhaps not perfect since they are even more interstate clubs now, but fuck, it makes far more sense to declare that as the beginning of a national league and start of records than to start from the 19th century...(I'll also add that I'm not opposed to starting records with the relegation of SMFC to Sydney)

And I'm saying that Victorian records are irrelevant to a national comp; POOrt's 19th century flags are as irrelevant as any VFL club's. I can't see how that's debatable or why it shouldn't be wiped.

Kind of, the odds are based off form. Money is coming in hard for the bulldogs because De Goey is out and there's a lot of talk that Travis Cloke will be fired up and come out to bash the young Collingwood defense. I'm not convinced this will be the case.

There are several reasons why I think this one will swing Collingwood's way, and that it's better to bet on them on the line.

The last 2 encounters were a lot closer than what they look. Collingwood was well in control of the last game played at the MCG, until they got struck down by multiple injuries in the second half.

Containing the opposition after losing a center clearance is somewhat of an achilles heal for the bulldogs. This is one of the few aspects Collingwood can shine. Treloar will be very hard for them to contain and I can't really see an appropriate match up for him.

As much as Beveridge is talking up how they are going to 'harness le emotions' and not suffer a premiership hangover, a lot of what I've seen suggests they aren't doing that at all. JJ went and got himself an OBJ hairstyle (le black NFL player look, how contrived), Bontempelli has been doing more media interviews than he's been getting kicks in the pre-season, and Libba's personality has been getting more eccentric and out there since they won. This team is still on a high and it's going to take a few rounds to shake it off. On the flipside, this young Collingwood group will be very keen to prove themselves against the reigning premiers.

The Bulldog's success can largely be contributed to their illegal disposals. During the off season this was pointed out to the AFL and they announced they would be cracking down on this. Already last night we saw how red hot they were on it. Take into account this is a Collingwood home game, and it's round one so the umpires will be very nervy out there if it's a close contest. One last thing - Bulldogs have not been the hot favourite in hostile territory for a very long time...

I think Sydney is probably the best team to bandwagon if you're a gloryseeker. The club has made 12 out of the last 14 finals series, and I don't see them dropping out again any time soon. They are my current premiership tip and for very good reasons I might add.

I'm not sure if you watch AFL, but it was the most meme premiership I have ever seen. Sydney were well on top through most of the game, yet the umpires gave everything the bulldogs way because of >MUH SENTIMENT.

And getting away with illegal disposals is a massive advantage when you watch the bulldogs play the way they do. It's almost impossible to strip them of possession because they'll throw it to a team mate. They won't be allowed to get away with it this year though.
