>I feel bad for Honda
Why do you feel bad for Honda for literally fucking up 2 coming on 3 years in a row, but loathe McLaren who still held out on them, rather then dumping them and going back to an existing customer engine program.
It's clear that by now, the majority of the problems lie within the engine compartment, not the chassis. McLaren overstate themselves, but it's clear that the chassis isn't the problem when they're picking up 95 place grid penaltyies for engine/ERS failure.
It's doubley poor, because Honda are the only manufacturer in F1 that actually make mass production Hybrids. In fact, I believe that they were the first with the Insight (internationally), beating the Prius by a year or two.

They deserve everything they're getting for their colossal fuck up. Doesn't mean I don't feel bad for them, though.
My reasons for hating McLaren go back to around 2004 when they couldn't build a working car to save their lives. In 05, they definitely cost gimi a championship.
>>74581007
You can't just throw an engine in like that I don't think, especially not with how different the cars are (not only in characteristics but also in length and width), so late before Melbourne.
I don't understand how Honda can make an engine this bad. It's slow, it is extremely unreliable. How will this ever make the race distance if it can't do testing presumably in the lowest engine mode.

>Button wasn't rich, his dad made him drive on dry tyres in the rain so he didn't have to buy wets
Is this completely true tho (the dry tyres in the rain thing)? I've always been very skeptic.
I think that only happened in one or maybe two races when he just started karting. I can't see him karting multiple wet races on dry tyres and getting good results.

Actually, that was one of the rsons that made me not take that sport seriously compared to F1, you see f1 pit crew with all the cool helmets and stuff, then you watch motogp and they are guys casually bringing the bike for a ride on sunday
>>74581837
F1 used to do it too
>>74581752
It's possible that it was just early on, but I don't see any reason not to believe it as karting is an expensive hobby to fund. Of course when he got to Formula Ford or whatever entry-level single seaters he raced in he'd have wet tyres though
>>74581837
that's the best bit.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsQWMovTPfc
Like how sometimes the riders just fuck around in practice and try and scrape helmet.
Or when jack miller was practicing wheelies instead of doing practice starts last year.
>>74581858
I know, but that alongside with the looks of the bike that are just usual and not "alien looking" like f1 made it more casual to my eyes, plus I basically have memories only of the seasons after 1999 where crew were already pretty suited up
>>74581805
And then winning Formula Renault Eurocup which gave him 500k to do Formula Renault 3.5
>>74581878
That's what I mean. I don't doubt it happened, but I think it only happened once or twice in the very beginning.
When the story is brought up people always act like he raced entire seasons on dry tyres in the wet.
>>74581837
See I went the other way. "These people care more about racing than branding".
I'm saying that banning shorts will make the racing worse but I've been in enough retarded corporate environments where things like this come about for the worst reasons that it makes me kind of uncomfortable.
>>74581227
I don't think anyone should feel bad for Mclaren, Alonso, or Button desu.
There were two sides of the argument when Honda was announced as Mclaren's engine supplier for 2017.
On one hand, a good amount of people thought it was a really bad idea to enter an expensive new engine formula. Aside from the fact that the other engines would have a year of on track development when the Honda engine was introduced, IIRC the Honda engine was also only being developed for ~14 months compared to the 2+ years Mercedes spent before they even ran the car. Things were especially worrying after 2014 testing, when it became clear that every engine would have teething problems to overcome and Honda wouldn't be working those out for another year.
On the other hand, some people thought Honda had wiped together a leading engine in 14 moths with absolutely no ontrack running. I seem to remember A LOT of these people shouting down Mclaren-Honda critics on *Reddit*, backing up their claims with the fact that Mclaren-Honda wouldn't have to limit their engine development with engine tokens. A sound argument in theory, but it seems to assume that no F1 team would ever consider developing parts that they knew they wouldn't be able to run immediately on the current year's car. More realistically, I was reading Steve Matchett's "The Chariot Makers" recently and he talks about how Ferrari had drawn up plans to run an extremely complicated car with a unicast engine/transmission and no clutch in the early 2000's (some liberal reading of the traction control rules would've allowed electronic control of the rear differential to decouple the engine from the wheels when necessary) but that was all scrapped because of the one-engine-per-race rule.

>>74581936
Anyway, while there was no way for any of us to know for certain what would happen with the Honda engine, I think anyone who wasn't delusionally overoptimistic would recognize that the lack of ontrack running was always going to be a serious issue for Honda.
Mclaren should've seen this coming. I wouldn't be surpsied if a lot of them did, it's just that Ron had his head so far up his ass he couldn't see past the "championship team" meme. They should've just waited out the storm and hoped that a new regulation change or a major shift in current manufacturers (EG Mercedes eventually withdrawing like they say they will someday) would allow them to become the de facto factory team again. If it weren't for their stupid shit Mobil One contracts they would've still been plenty lethal with the Mercedes engine. Considering how Williams performed with it in 2014 and 2015, I find it hard to believe they wouldn't have won races during those years. I'm saying that even though I don't even think the chassis is as good as they say.
If Button had any sort of dignity he would've retired at the end of 2014. It's obvious though, he doesn't, and he just loves to collect that $30 mil/year or whatever off them sweet Honda contracts, so I guess that's good for him.
Alonso did it to himself. Everything we have seen from this man suggests that he is most likely an awful teammate and terrible to work with, so it's no surprise Ferrari were happy to let him go and be an idiot. I have to wonder if they actually showed him anything of value when he went to look at Mclaren again (other than the money). Like, it is widely held that Mercedes showed Hamilton their engine development when he signed with them for 2013 and beyond. Somehow, I doubt they did, so he probably bought the "championship team" meme as it rolled out of Ron's mouth and was overjoyed when it came with massive sacks of yen.

Ferrari have been reserved because they know they got a good car, and now they're flexing with their obvious "please pay attention to how much we are sandbagging" thing. Merc are just cruising, keeping a regular profile as per usual for their pre-season tests.
Sure its surprising that Ferrari got anything decent together at all (remember how many people, myself included, were saying Ferrari was gonna be McLaren tier now that they have a literally who head designer dude and full italia mode) but still, it's not like Merc just threw away the biggest budget on the grid and accidentally produced something that isn't going to be incredibly competitive.

Think Daryl settled by paying some streamshekels or got off by just signing a piece of paper that says he will get anally annihilated if he does it again?
I can't defend McHonda anymore. I honestly believe McLaren should find another engine supplier for next year.
I've been defending McLaren's decision for the past 2 years. I think most of the criticism has been misguided and undeserved. Of course the first year was going to be rough, of course I didn't expect them to be winning races last year. But more critically, I supported the fact that they tried a significantly different design, with a smaller turbo, in an attempt to gain an advantage. They took a calculated risk, and it didn't pay off. Calling that a mistake is succumbing from hindsight bias or results-oriented thinking; it is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose.
And since then, progress had not been lightning quick, but had been in the right direction. I still wasn't hoping for them to win races this year -- but I was hoping they'd be quick enough and reliable enough to put the screws to the likes of Haas, Force India, and Toro Rosso. It seems clear from testing that that's unlikely to happen. It seems clear that they are no longer heading in the right direction, they've gone backwards. The situation for the past 2 years has been understandable, but the situation this year is unacceptable.
I'm sure we'll hear more about what Honda's issues are, how difficult they will be to fix, and of course we'll see the actual race results in the coming months. I'm keeping an open mind, but I'm done defending them. It's time for Honda to start putting up results or go home.
>>74589552
They will go the way Williams went after losing BMW.
>>74589596
>replying to reddit pasta
>>74589552
I mean, a lack of power has a series of knock-on effects that create problems elsewhere. The car's aero may not work optimally at a reduced speed, the tires may struggle to get up to temperature and therefore not have the grip in the corners that they should, and all sorts of stuff.
I'm not Gary Anderson, but I work in motorsport. I wouldn't be terribly surprised if Mclaren has chassis issues, but it's also possible that the Honda is suffering from a lack of power and whatever power it does have isn't driveable. Unless someone who works for Mclaren or Honda is here to confirm one way or the other, it's all just armchair analysis made by people who can't really know what's going on for sure.

cmon, you're being real mcdick to Honda. Never forget that they started to slump with Mercedes! They nearly killed Alonso with still undisclosed fault on their part. They are running in circles, and they just keep blaming Honda for everything. I'm not saying Honda is giving them the best engine in the world, but bad decision making and majority of failures are on them alone.
They had extreme packaging last year, they had complicated and draggy aero. That's always part of the reason that car broke down on them, and it's at least partly responsible for car being so slow on straights. They fixed nothing. RB were in the same position, jet they reevalued their aero, and slipstremed their car, at the same time Mclaren are still with the same approach. Get as much DF as possible, and package it as tightly as possible, let Honda figure their shit, or else we'll put all blame on them. The facts are straight, they have a shitty car all around. Nobody is even looking at what they're doing in aero, at the same time you see Newey studying complete newcomers like Hass in same area.

I'm not saying it's going to be a good season for McLaren, because it won't be. But if they can't even stay ahead of Sauber, STR, and Haas consistently, and if they end up finishing behind those teams in the championship, it would be tremendously depressing.
They managed to finish 4th in 94' with that grenade engine from Peugeot powering the car, so I have a tiny shred of hope they'll avoid 10th place in the season standings this year.
That being said, I'm fully expecting something in the neighborhood of a 6th-7th place end to the season for them, depending on whether or not they can outscore Renault, which seems questionable at the moment. And if Honda's end of things fails too frequently, there's little McLaren's end can do.

Reddit won't do that, because they also have to use them. Also they don't like to be rude :DDDDDDD

Do you guys think the Ferrari hype train is worth boarding?
I want to believe the Scuderia are back but I've been hurt before
>>74599064
>is worth boarding
No.
>>74595274
Fuck off poorfag, go back to your favela
>>74599064
Maybe it'll be VETTELWINSLOL again, but I wouldn't get my hype up too much just yet. Like everyone said, even SF themselves, that testing results don't really matter. We don't know what kind of setup they were running, and again we don't know what settings Mercs were running.
For all we know, Mercs have been sandbagging like all hell and it'll be another season of HAMILTONWINSLOL.
Just contain your hype for something else and maybe add in a few prayers for McHonda as well

Probably should get on before it's too late, anon.

I'm trying to contain my expectations. I'm just desperate for an actually competitive championship, and I want a Ferrari to win again
Why would Mercedes run race simulations with a turned down PU? Especially with a completely new car you'd want as much relevant data as possible, no?
>>74599124
Well they did that last year so why no this year?
They just ran lap after lap on the medium compound last year.
>>74599124
you never reveal your true power level unless you absolutely have to
they can still get plenty of useful data without driving right on the limit
>>74599124
The media and fanboys are obsessed with pushing the "Mercedes is still dominant" narrative.
Example: Last week Sky reported that Mercedes were running in a lower engine mode, because they were having problems with the engine on the dyno, so that means they're going to dominate once they can turn the engine up!
Fucking what?
Literally Sky logic: "engine doesn't work properly" = "proof they will win the championship"
I guess that means McHonda is going to win the next 193 championships.
>>74599163
Let's hope they'll be proven wrong
>1.20.2 for Hülkenberg on Ultrasoft
Renault confirmed solved
>>74599208
>We expect to be 4 seconds faster than last year
Be 4 seconds faster on 2 tier softer compund, weeew
remember that Pirelli's compounds have changed this year so the tyres are overall harder
>>74598579
That's more like US natives

>>74599397
You have to try better lad
>>74599064
No, Ferrari should be put behind the shed.
After McLaren and Williams of course.
Stroll got fastest 1st sector of the day and was only 2 tenths off of amd amx, on softs. The Williams looks fucking basic even compared to the RBR and tey they have pace.
Who's gonna win it all this season, lads?
>>74599523
that only means that the laptimes we're seeing don't mean shit
>>74599532
Obviously Ferrari
>open live autosport feed just now
>21:15 RED FLAG. McLAREN.
typical
>Hülkenberg finds another 4 tenths on Ultrasoft: 1:19.885 for the tall Rhinelander. His pace is another 4 tenths slower than Massa's Wednesday-time. The little favela monkey set a time of 1:19.420.
Wew AMS racist much?
McLel stops again
RED FLAG. IT'S McLAREN AGAIN.

I don't even know how to react to this anymore.
They couldn't even get through the season like this
What the fuck
>Honda can't even complete a few dozen laps without the power unit exploding
Worst preseason testing ever by McLel? Can anything in history compare?

Maybe they are doing run out of fuel laps, r-right?
just how fucking incompetent are the Honda guys, they've been doing this shit for so long now

Renault: 1628
Honda: 399

>"hurr hurr, Pirelli tyres are shit, make them more durable"
>>74599814
indeed..
>>74599814
And still nobody used hards even when the wear was high, honestly bring it back to 3 compounds, a sticky af soft, an average medium and rock solid hards. All compounds for all races. All with similar thermal usage profiles and each grade of tyre having about double the life of the previous. This is hard to do.
>>74599798
