Who's Gonna Win Daytona? A 12 Step solution to all of your '500 questions.

I will make a statement and eliminate the driver(s) that it applies to.

1. No non-chartered teams. Goodbye Kennington, LaJoie, Gaughan, Sadler

2. No rookie has won since 2011. Goodbye Ty Dillon, Suarez, Jones

3. No "non-parent" team. Goodbye Whitt, Ragan, McDowell, DiBenedetto, Cassill, Gase, Waltrip, Jeffery Earnhardt, Buescher, Allmendinger, Blaney, Truex, Almirola

4. Know what a dying team looks like? Check out Roush Fenway and Richard Childress Racing. Goodbye Bayne, Stenhouse, Austin Dillon, Newman, Menard

5. Nobody I like because fuck you anon. Goodbye Harvick, Bowyer, Keselowski, Kyle Busch

6. Nobody without SOME KIND of story going on, media fabricated or otherwise. Goodbye Kenseth, Logano, Larson, Kahne

7. Danica Patrick. She is Danica Patrick. Goodbye Danica Patrick (holy shit. how did she last this long?)

Six left. I can go case by case from here.

8. Stewart-Hass has switched to Ford this season. They have been quick all week, but to win the first race of the year in an entirely brand new to you car is a bit of a stretch. Even with the series' title sponsor on the car. Goodbye Kurt Busch

9. The story of Dale Jr. winning in his first race back from a serious concussion would be far too good and NASCAR only fixes qualifying which leads me to Chase Elliot. NASCAR's golden boy. He inherited Jeff Gordon's car. Family lineage almost as deep as Jr's. Good kid with a bright future. However, he has been shoved so far down the fans' throats that we have shat out NASCAR's undigested arm. Again, the story is too perfect. Goodbye Jr. and Chase

10. Nobody has won consecutive 500's since Sterling Marlin in 1994 and 1995. That shoudn't change on Sunday. Plus, fuck that guy. Goodbye Denny Hamlin

11. Jamie McMurray. Bad fast all week, crazy aggressive in his qualifying race. He either will win the whole thing or pull the pin on a massive crash. I'm leaning towards the latter.

12. Oops.

I prefer to watch races on TV because you miss so much action when you only see what happens in front of you at the larger tracks. Atlanta was better, but the haze just made if feel surreal.
The other fans are OK, but you ALWAYS end up sitting near the loudmouth asshole. I've never seen a fight, though. One bonus was this girl with huge tits and a loose tank top that kept slipping at Dega.
The absolute worst thing is the traffic. The best way to go there is to time it to arrive at 5-6am, or get a full tank of gas before you get into the line because you will be waiting for a couple hours. Leaving is a nightmare, 4 hours to get to the interstate at Atlanta. Two hours at Dega, even though it's not far from the interstate at all, they just make you route 10 miles past the interstate onramp.
Pre-race activities are great at some tracks. There's always some entertainment and free shit. There's also some tailgaters that will sell you a plate of some really good food for $5. Just don't eat so much that you'll have to take a shit because port-a-potties.

The ACO are fucking themselves over by making LMP1 so expensive and tunring LMP2 into a virtual spec class though. Shit, I'll just leave this here:

http://www.racer.com/wec-le-mans/item/138288-aco-sporting-director-weighs-in-on-dpis

>"Also, in the U.S., I believe [DPi] is more about marketing," he continued. "You put a Cadillac sticker on the windshield ... Also, U.S. Fans are perhaps a little less interested than the Le Mans fans with what is happening underneath the bonnet of the car. The Le Mans OEMs with whom we talk [and] work [with] in Europe have a presence which is justified by bringing in new technology."

You know they're sweating bullets when the DPi formula has gotten Team Penske, Honda and Joest Racing interested in joining after just a single race while LMP1 has 5 cars this year wit no real new manufacturers lining up to compete.

>>
>>74399331

Post xfinity race the cup drivers even said blocking and stage racing wasn't even the problem (Especially since Sadler did a fine job of controlling the race and moving from pack to pack with clean as fuck blocking). The downforce was craptacular and the high wind on the back straight and 4th turn was fucking with the aero worse. Stages just made full timers race harder but it was nothing compared to the wind and people getting loose off 4 (Which has been happening since the clash since Jimmy got loose twice in one race there).

I don't think it will be Xfinity levels of shitfest today (Three Big ones. Not even ARCA managed a single big one. Just a medium one that ended the race) but if France is insistent on "No blocking" then there's going to be something big near the end of a stage.

Indycar is the best it's been since the merger. They should add races in South America and go back to the other Rockingham UK and Lausitzring. Indycar and IMSA should try to appeal to disgruntled racing fans who are fed up with nascar. but the only time Indycar gets any kind of mainstream media coverage is for the Indy 500.

It hurts me when governing bodies seem to actively try to ruin the sport. both in nascar and F1, all forms of racing.

that's true.
but still why is nascar so stubborn about the retarded playoff system when it is clearly hurting their wallets? stop trying to copy handegg motorsports don't need a playoff system. That retarded Chase system is what started their downfall. but nascar refuses to go back on it. similar to how F1 gets stuck with these turbo hybrids no one enjoys thanks to the manufacturers.

when things were going good WEC was bragging about how they are the most technologically advanced form of racing and better than F1. but now it seems to have backfired on them.
ACO were supposed to introduce new rules for hydrogen powered LMP cars but they delayed that due to costs reasons to not scare off anymore manufacturers. so that would make LMP1 even more expensive.

Mostly, they don't see it like that ... with a side of nobody wants to reverse a decision they made themselves because then they have to explain why they used to be retarded but aren't anymore. You and I think the chase should be thrown away immediately, that ain't happening until Not Brian France is in charge of the thing.

>All three NASCAR races managed to have more spaghetti spilled in each Daytona race than the ARCA season opener.

This is going to be the most meme season yet.
>>
>>74413305
Is there anything we can take from this race?

Busy weekend and only got ARCA, trucks, and the last 40 laps of Cup. Verdict for me is stages seem ok, but they need to cut down on the downtime between them and do something about the caution laps counting for them. Downforce is probably fine, people need to not drive like shit but we'll find out more as the season goes. Superspeedways are a meme.
>>
>>74413331
5:00 rule is shit.
>>
>>74413339
5 minute not 5 o clock
>>
>>74413339
I don't really mind. Didn't see it too much in action but it cuts down on downright dangerous, caution/debris causing cars, and revenge wrecking. 5 minutes might be a bit short but it's something I welcome the thought of.
>>
>>74413358
>it cuts down on downright dangerous, caution/debris causing cars
Did you even watch the races?
>>
>>74413339
The clock definitely shouldn't start right when they enter pit road, but when they stop in their box. I could see that being a big issue on the long and slow pit roads like Martinsville, Bristol, Sonoma, etc. And maybe have the time limit be something arbitrary like until the current caution period ends, or 10 minutes if a caution didn't come out.
>>
>>74413331
stages were shit. someone who gets wrecked should be able to fix their car and get back back on the track and get some more points. as long as they are up to speed, they should be able to be on the track, even if they are several laps down.
>>
>>74413407
There's a minimal speed limit for a reason but I'm not sure how hard NASCAR ever enforced that at times it seemed
>>
>>74413417
that's why I said as long as they were up to speed, they should be able to race.

I dont agree with the 5 minutes. Plenty of times I was hoping my driver was able to fix his car and get back on the track.

F1 drivers retire because conditions arent optimal. NASCAR drivers race damnit
>>
>>74412639

Actually, I think it was in the middle of June on a fucking Saturday, at High noon.

If they ran that race at night it would've been a better crowd, and if it were in October it would probably sell more seats, but I don't think Indycar will go back there for the foreseeable future.
>>
>>74413417

The 5 minute rule is basically because of Dylan Lupton being a shit during the last year season finale because they took him in for damage and let him keep running 12 laps behind despite Hoots yelling at the GoFas team that if he wasn't meeting minimum speed he'd be parked. Tyre bursts. Yellow for Debris and the next restart ended Carl's race and career.

It's a rule that targets back markers to stop them fucking up the results of a race. I bet the top teams didn't think it would backfire on them so hard.
>>
>>74413533
I went to the one in September 2012 at Fontana. Night race was AWESOME and the crowd was pretty fucking good.
>>
I don't know if you guys lurk on any racing message boards, but a guy who works on an XFINITY team posted an article about Obaika Racing being a complete fucking trainwreck and it's amazing.

To summarize:

>Laid off entire staff after last season ended, fired crew chief
>Hires new crew chief
>New crew chief says fuck this shit and leaves after four days
>Hires Derrike Cope to be new-new crew chief
>(Apparently) fires Cope after getting his contacts
>No tools or parts in the shop, trailer had been repossessed by TriStar for lack of payment
>Nothing assembled a week before Daytona
>New-new-new crew chief hired
>Obaika enlists help by settling a debt with an engine builder
>Dale Quarterly brought in to help, tries to get a hauler from Rick Ware but turned away due to Obaika's lack of payment
>10-15 hours of work to do while most teams have arrived at the track
>Quarterly convinced to use his personal trailer from his Busch North days. New-new-new crew chief quits.
>Finally get to Daytona
>Car is a disaster. LF spindle angle is wrong, tie rod is crashing into control arm and chassis
>Barely get the car through tech after having to spend the night
>Stephen Leicht paid $50,000 to race Daytona and is having serious second thoughts
>Obaika runs around the garage area looking for help but owners refuse to help him because his reputation is so fucking bad
>Offers money to one owner and essentially gets an "I would if I knew you had money to pay me"
>Only three wheel brakes on the car because the left front brake caliper is fucked
>Team somehow makes a lap in practice (If they didn't, they wouldn't be allowed to qualify)
>DNQ

How will the local African Warlord's team fare next week?

(By the way, I should make a note: I've been looking to become a PR person in the racing business. I saw a job listing (Which is rare in the racing industry) for a PR representative for Obaika's team but refused to pursue it because I knew exactly what I'd be getting into.)

Hey nascar fans if you like stages then I know the perfect motorsport for you. it's got plenty of fan interaction and stages also.

NASCAR needs to rethink it's rules package for superspeedways after that crashfest this weekend. It can't keep ignoring the problem of restrictor plate racing and turn a blind eye. It doesn't make for a good on-track product when you have a 6 hour cautionfest.
NASCAR isn't a low-cost series anymore teams don't want to pay to keep fixing up cars every weekend. I almost feel bad for the drivers because it's not completely their fault. The rules package leads to a certain one style of racing at superspeedways. Who would want to sign up for a rigged death race sabotage? I guess Atlanta should be a normal race.

someone aware me of whats new this season, i havent watched because i hate the chase shit, whats this stages business, and 5:00?
>>
>>74422013

the race "stops" every 40-50 and 60 laps for stages, each winner of the stage gets 5 bonus points, the person who wins the race gets 100 bonus points and gets locked into the chase

also, if your car is able to return to the track, with damaged panels or bodywork, your team has 5 minutes to get it fixed if the car is safe to drive and is able to get it back on the track

otherwise you are not allowed back on the track
>>
>>74422970
I'm okay with NASCAR keeping the stipulation that race winners are locked into the chase, but everything else is dumb.
>>
>>74422970
>the race "stops" every 40-50 and 60 laps for stages

ugh, so planning for long runs isnt a thing anymore?

>5 minutes to get it fixed

so theyre trying to add clock management type shit, uuugh, no thanks
>>
>>74423086
The worst part of the 5 minute clock is that it counts total time on pit road, so you really only have three and a half minutes to fix anything.
>>
Damaged cars drive around five laps down because their sponsors want them out there picking up tv time. This five minute clock rule is going to give DNFs to some big name drivers. Their sponsors are not going to be happy. I hope they pressure NASCAR to change the rule.

Any time they make handling really matter on the big tracks people cry that the races aren't about who can drive into the back bumper of the car ahead the hardest in the last 2 laps. The only reason the cars have little enough downforce you can actually spin them right now is to keep them from tandeming.
>>
>>74426566

Alot of it has to do with the fact that they paved Talladega and Daytona glass smooth. Old Daytona surface handling mattered alot becuase it chewed up tires.

They cant keep paving these tracks so perfectly to where they never age

>>
>>74427257
I personally thought the quality of the racing itself was good but not that much better than what we get nowadays, but the thing I really liked was the lack of gimmicks

that and they let the guys race for more than 20 laps at a time without calling a caution

like, it was just the guys racing so watching it was kind of comfy, as opposed to all the dumb gimmicks nascar uses which are just annoying

They won't because it seems like that was one of the rules the drivers wanted. Also a bunch of reporters are saying that they asked around teams at the weekend and it's saving teams up to $50,000-100,000 a race which is a way bigger incentive to keep the rule. Sponsors aren't even that mad about it either apparently. They get more eyes on with a crash than backmarking
