Would San Diego building a stadium for the MLS and not the Chargers be the ultimate nail in the coffin for the NFL?
>>
>>73923743
Nah, just Spanos.
>>
>>73923743
Probably not. Spanos was a jew who wanted the public to pay for the stadium while the proposed mls stadium would be payed for by SDSU and the investors. Plus they're planning on making it expandable if the NFL ever returns.

>>

Anyone who advocates for a winter schedule is an idiot

>this Cincinnati delusion
>>
>>73928552
I still think it would be possible with some creative scheduling.
>>
>>73930460
Not it wouldn't
You would fuck up the schedule so badly
And you'd take MLS out of their most profitable months
Anyone who thinks it's possible is lying to themselves
>>
Jesus the liberalness is strong tonight on twitter
Are their any writers who are apolitical?
>>
>>73930710
My big vision is to actually play October to August, so you wouldn't lose those months. Instead they'd become even more important because they'd be your playoff race.
>>
>>73926914
>Bobby Dodd Stadium
what they playin there for?
>>
>>73930795
So there's nearly unimportant games played in winter and you fuck up the transfer market and shit the winter schedule shills had a point about
So you found the absolutely worse arrangement possible
>>
>>73930756
>"Waaaahhhhhhhhh!"
>>
>>73930989
Take a winter break for the duration of the transfer window and then you disproportionately schedule winter matches in warm weather markets.
I'm not so arrogant as to think my plan is without flaws, but please, I've at least thought of those.
>>
>>73931110
January isn't the big transfer market though
It's the summer one
The one you plan to have the end of the season
And you can't just schedule winter games in the South
It's not like it's balmy 70 degrees everywhere below the Mason Dixon line
>>
>>73931049
If they want a personal account to spew that stuff that's fine

It's probably Sacramento, St. Louis, and San Diego (provided no collapse of a stadium deal with those last two) and then whoever the league picks between Cincinnati and Tampa

>>

the mayor of nashville is proposing a soccer stadium

>Plus they're planning on making it expandable if the NFL ever returns.
They're planning on setting aside 16 acres within the Mission Valley site for a NFL franchise to build a football sized stadium should the League ever decide to return to SD. The stadium being proposed by FS investors would be have 30k seats, is intended to be used by a MLs team, and the SDSU football team and it is being negotiated whether or not it will be expandable up to 40k for higher attendence events, primarily for SDSU.
>>
>>73932710
I do not lose faith, that this season the orlando city if play in the playoffs of Major League soccer
>>
>>73932728
no they won't and that pisses me off
this league needs religation so teams have an incentive to to be better
i hate the "but thats not how american leagues play it" excuse for it too
it's not an american sport why are we playing it like it is
>>
>>73923743
Not at all, but holy fuck, would it become the poster child scenario held up to demonstrate how unreasonable the NFL negotiates with communities.
Negotiations had been ongoing between Spanos and San Diego for 15 years, and they couldn't come to an agreement. Meanwhile, some savvy investors put together a plan, take it to city hall, and has everyone but soccer haters publicly supporting it within the timeframe of a week.
Its astounding how easy it is to get a supposedly unreasonable local government when they don't poor boy it, and present negotiations that go beyond "We're an NFL franchise. Start sucking."
>>
>>73932728
>We really need MLS2 badly
Yeah it's called USL, why are you ok with screwing your own feeder league?
>>
>>73923331
My family had season tickets to Chargers games for 38 years. I told my Dad not to renew our contract after the 2015 season. If SD gets an MLS team I don't know if I could afford season tickets, but I'd love to get some if I could.
>>
>>73932853
i think he means it in realms of religation
>>
>>73932814
I don't actually think relegation will do that much for quality
But it will be an interesting wrinkle

Because we need to the game to survive
The thing is no one in the lower leagues is really MLS ready
Probably a few more ready than others but most teams don't deserve a 3rd division tag let alone a 1st division one
>>
>>73932853
A lower league owned by MLS where the teams operate at a MLS1 level
Basically a more professional USL
And no that's definitely not the NASL
>>
>>73932901
This

pro/rel could work in a decade or two, but not right now. MLS just doesn't have the infrastructure and fan commitment for it.

What happens if they institute pro/rel and a team like the Sounders or Galaxy, two of the biggest money makers for MLS, get relegated and a team with a 3,000 max attendance gets promoted? It would cause big dip in revenue and attendance.
>>
>>73932916
So you want every aspect of US soccer to be controlled by MLS and their NFL owners?
>>
>>73932965
I'm not a conspiracy theorist so yes
MLS isn't perfect but what league is?
You guys take soccer way to seriously
You've gone beyond life and death
>>
>>73932965
it's the best scenario for now.

euroboos may hate it, but the way MLS is structured has kept it alive and financially secure.

Canada is much more European than the US, there are a lot more European immigrants here and they keep more of their culture instead of becoming "Americanized". If the US got the World Cup not sure if Americans would really care at all.

The atmosphere at TFC/Impact/Whitecap games is just leagues above your average American team.

>>73947757
Wouldn't be a stretch to get one of the stadiums up to 80k. The biggest challenge is getting the minimum of 8 stadiums with 40k+ capacity.

Yeah it would

An old man Dempsey is better as seen in the Copa America because unlike Altidore, Dempsey actually proved himself to be a quality striker in the Prem before moving stateside and it shows in his clutchness.

Also, we're not pushing enough young strikers through. Klinsmann brought in a literally who college shitter in Morris and a Bundes 3 (THREE) player Wood in 2015. While only Wood panned out, it showed that if given enough motivation, any young striker in europe can be contributors to the national team.

>Who are all of these European players that would take us to the World Cup Final?

No one is saying that. But I would like to reach a WC semifinal soon and that's only going to happen with the best players available in our pool and those players almost inevitably will come from Europe.

How did the USA become so shitty?
>>
>>73957733
When we let the disgusting liberal mindset seep into MLS.

Ever notice how 10-20 years back we always trained our players the hardest? We had a go-get'em attitude, a form of fearlessness to our philosophy. MLS players in the national team were itching to be the best they can be and to prove they are good enough to play against the stronger national teams. That's how we ended up with a talented squad that could punch above its weight. MLS back then was truly the essence of the American spirit.

Nowadays it's a pathetic cesspool of liberal mediocrity. Sure it has grown but along with its growth, the cancer known as liberalism seeped in. First it began with the cringey as fuck ultras like FIGHT AND WIN but then it evolved to politically leftist garbage (see Portland and Seattle fanbases) where it's all about being so edgy and kewl and progressive.

>We're so diverse now, look how awesome us hipsters are!

With that change in demographics came the change in philosophy. Soon MLS fanbases deluded themselves into thinking that MLS is already a good enough league that doesn't need to improve as much as everyone with knowledge of the fucking sport says it does. Oh no, there's NOTHING wrong with our MLS players! Our players are great and if they aren't performing well it MUST be something other than the actual fucking players themselves... This mindset is even seen with the so called professional analysts of the league where it was apparent as fuck during Klinsmann's tenure.

>Wow, how DARE this world cup winner and former Germany coach criticize our league! What does he know about winning (other than playing and coaching at a high level)?

Just look at the MLS fags damage control every time their USA players get exposed. Either they make excuses for the player (see Bradley and Altidore) or they just claim that said player isn't the best and that this other MLS player is so top class. Embarrassing.

We will never get better until MLS kills this liberal attitude.

10-20 years ago MLS was African bush league tier. Seriously, it was fucking appalling. Ask literally anyone and they'll say the level of competition has gone way up. That being said, no one thinks MLS is as good as the top European leagues. I'm a fucking Seattle season ticket holder, not even memeing, and if you polled all 40,000 people in the stadium on a match day absolutely no one would say that the product on the field is as good as the Premier League. Even the literal antifa numales in the Gorilla FC supporter group wouldn't say so. Find me one instance of anyone here saying that MLS is as good as the PL or even fucking Ligue 1.

No one is saying anything like what you're arguing about. Matt Doyle does, but that's because MLS signs his checks.

>The group seeking to build a stadium and surrounding development in Mission Valley will publicly hand its expansion bid to the commissioner of Major League Soccer shortly before noon Monday aboard a San Diego landmark.

>Considering Mayor Kevin Faulconer and the COO of the city’s tourism authority and CEO of the region’s chamber of commerce will also be in attendance for the event on the flight deck of the USS Midway, it is pretty easy to see that a new future for San Diego as a sports town has already set sail.

>This is an opportunity. A good one. It’s a need meeting a solution in a way we could hardly dare to dream.

The San Diego bid to get an MLS team will be one of as many as a dozen such submissions expected by the Tuesday deadline. The league hopes to announce by fall at least two teams that would begin play in 2020 and perhaps two more that would begin playing at a future date. There is work to be done, including 72,000 signatures that must be gathered from registered city voters and a city council vote to forego a public election on what would essentially be a land swap.

>But the MLS commissioner is not attending an announcement of any other group vying for a team.

>Sure, Monday’s event coincided nicely with the national team’s friendly against Serbia at Qualcomm Stadium on Sunday. Commissioner Don Garber could attend the first game back for U.S. coach Bruce Arena and stay over a night to be on hand for Monday’s to-do. But neither did the commissioner nor his people attempt to downplay the significance of Garber’s attendance at the Midway event.

>“If we didn’t think San Diego would work,” Garber said, “we wouldn’t be here today.”

>Walking away from a meeting with Garber, it feels a lot like San Diego has nailed the interview process so far.
>>
>>73960633
>As for what factors into a successful expansion bid, the commissioner said, “Success is driven by great ownership, a great stadium situation and a market that cares. It seems those things are coming together nicely in San Diego.”

>Garber certainly seemed intrigued by the plans the MLS group, headed by local investor Mike Stone, has for the surrounding acreage – a stadium that would house the MLS team and San Diego State football, housing for students and faculty, as well as other middle-income families, office space and an entertainment district, plus more than 50 acres of park land.

>Garber seems more than passingly acquainted with the area and spoke of the marketing and revenue opportunity – including exterior signage – created by the convergence of three freeways and the trolley.

>“The Mission Valley site would be one of the most unique stadium and mixed-use development projects in the country,” he said.

>The commissioner is also a fan of Stone, with whom he has been acquainted for decades.

>“He represents that new breed of sports team owners we like,” Garber said. “… He’s young, successful working in private equity, and he moved to San Diego because he wanted to be here. He could have lived anywhere in the country, and he chose San Diego because he loved it.”

>The region’s demographics, skewing younger and more ethnically diverse all the time, are also intriguing for MLS.

>“We’ve positioned ourselves as a league for a new America,” Garber said, using a phrase he has for years employed to describe the United States’ evolution in a global market. “That new America lives here in San Diego.”

>Garber spent time with some city council members Sunday and will meet with the council Monday. It will be those nine folks who ultimately decide whether San Diego is going to welcome an invitation from MLS.

>The quest will officially launch Monday.

WNBA and NWSL are both subsidized by their parent leagues, though some WNBA squads have broken away from that and make a profit on their own (Connecticut Sun, Seattle Storm). NWSL is still working on it but the NWSL is like three years old, the WNBA is 20.
>>
>>73966852
>a 4th and 5th team in Cali

Fuck off
>>
>>73968156
California is going to get at least one more team out of the 4 expansion spots.

Sacramento has an established USL team with very good support and a dedicated fanbase

San Diego is a big vacation spot and they just lost the Chargers. MLS could go the that route like they did with Seattle after the Sonics left. it paid off big time then, it could prove lucrative now.

With the exception of San Jose, which is #11, all other west coast teams are in the top half when it comes to MLS attendance. LAFC is also going to be a money maker. It would make sense to, at the very least, even out the number of west coast teams at 8.
>>
>first kick booked but might have to cancel due to money for room

For playing in a shit stadium, it's fucking expensive to stay in DC.
>>
>>73968225
All signs currently point to Sacramento and St Louis getting 25 and 26 (STL contingent on the city funding bill getting passed)
But San Diego wouldn't be a bad choice to replace the Miami/Beckham team if they finally pull the plug on that fiasco, could play at Qualcomm for at a couple seasons until they get their own stadium up and running
>>
>>73968225
Even then, San Jose is selling out their games. Their stadium capacity is below the league average, because of limits put on them by the city. It's a huge step up from the 10k that Buck Shaw had
>>
>>73968678
Found it odd they would deliberately build the stadium under 20K these days....will they ever build in more seats in the open end?
>>
>>73968693
That's exactly why they built the horseshoe, they can just fill in the end. When that happens, i really hope it'll also put an end to all the empty seats. They have 18k seats and can only sell 18k tickets, so anyone at the bar has a seat in the stands that's empty, also all the people behind the scoreboard getting food at the taco trucks

At least USA has MLS, Canada only has semi-professional leagues and mostly gives no shits about the sport. So naturally, they're shit at it.

So you're basically saying that of all kinds of soccer out there, you like shit.

btw, you need to change your posting style. It's so recognizable that a random American /sp/artan found your facebook because you asked the same dumb question about American cities on another website.

SAN ANTONIO HAS BEEN ADDED TO THE LIST

THIS IS NOT A DRILL

http://www.mlssoccer.com/topic/expansion/2017/expansion-cities-bids

SAN DIEGO, TAMPA/ST. PETERSBURG, AND SAN ANTONIO ARE THE ONLY CITIES THAT HAVE PUBLICLY SUBMITTED BIDS
>>
So if Indy 11 gets awarded an MLS expansion team, does this mean the NASL is finally dead?

Cosmos will pump blood diamond money into the league if they have to

HUUUUUGE UPDATE FOR YOU

DETROIT HAS SUBMITTED A BID
ST LOUIS HAS SUBMITTED A BID
RALEIGH/DURHAM HAS SUBMITTED A BID

THAT PUTS SIX (6) CITIES IN THE RACE FOR TWO (2) SPOTS, WITH MORE TO COME SO STAY TUNED

http://www.mlssoccer.com/topic/expansion/2017/expansion-cities-bids
>>
>>73976605
Wait, isn't it four spots?
>>
>>73976644
Yes.
>>
>>73976644
Two announced sometime this year for 2020, two for a later unannounced date. I imagine for the second period, there will be another chance to place a bid.

You don't have Bruce Arena anymore
also you lost a shit ton of players
>>
>you already have a local team & get to sit back & watch other cities eat each other alive

This bidding process is comfy as fuck.
>>
>>73973446
I'm off work for both, but probably only making one trip
>>
>>73976746
>>73976749
I don't know, I'm using MLS.com, and they haven't mentioned anything yet. So maybe, but the league has yet to confirm it
>>
>>73976815
are you /Minnesota/?
>>
>>73976832
If all 12 cities previously mentioned don't submit bids, it would be ridiculous
This is just MLS trying to manufacture excitement over procedural stuff

True, but it'll be interesting to see what other cities bid as well. Phoenix wasn't listed, for example. It could be possible that they won't list some of these other bids because of that, which I hadn't thought of, but you never know.
>>
BTW, apparently Beckham's deadline is today, so maybe we'll see the Miami bid finally disappear and another slot open
That would be especially good news for SD and Cincy bids, who have big stadiums to play in (Qualcomm and Nippert, respectively) that they can jump right in with and play at for a couple seasons while the soccer stadium is built elsewhere
>>
WELL NEVER FUCKING MIND PHOENIX HAS BEEN LISTED, AND PLACED SLIGHTLY BEFORE DETROIT #CONSPIRACY

THAT PUTS THE TALLY TO SEVEN TEAMS

http://www.mlssoccer.com/topic/expansion/2017/expansion-cities-bids
>>
>>73976952
Phoenix is a very late entrant, just threw their hat into the ring in the last week or so, surely too late for a run at 25/26 but probably with an eye on 27/28

I don't expect anyone out of the teams Garber listed most recently to have a chance at the expansion. Probably going to get thrown out at the first reading, tbqh

ANOTHER SURPRISE COMING TO THE TABLE, INDIANAPOLIS, HAS JUST PLACED THEIR REQUEST FOR A MLS SPOT

THAT LEAVES THE TALLY TO EIGHT TEAMS, AND PEOPLE CAN'T HELP BUT WONDER, WHERE IS CHARLOTTE? WHERE IS SACRAMENTO? WHERE IS CINCINNATI? EVEN LAS VEGAS HAS YET TO SUBMIT

THERE IS STILL TIME LEFT, BUT THE CLOCK IS TICKING FOLKS

>>
>>73977179
>>Las Vegas
Were they supposed to share with the proposed NFL stadium? Because if they were, LOL
>>
AND I AM PROVED TO BE WRONG, AS CINCINNATI HAVE BEEN LISTED AS BIDDERS, ODDLY DATING BACK TO ABOUT SIX HOURS AGO AS THEIR SENDING TIME

NINE TEAMS ARE NOW TO FIGHT FOR TWO SPOTS, WITH NOTABLE MISSES BEING LAS VEGAS, CHARLOTTE, AND SUPPOSED FRONTRUNNER FOR EXPANSION SACRAMENTO.
