I don't think he will ever rise to an elite level, at least not offensively. But he still should easily develop into an elite number 1 dman, similar to a Ryan Suter and Brent Seabrook hybrid type. Not saying he won't put up 40+ pts a few times in his career, but I don't think he will ever be a consistent 50+pt dman, but that's fine. If Werneski stays on course, Jones can be his Seabrook (Werneski being comparable to Keith).

If Columbus GM was smart, he'd start considering what he can get for Murray. I wouldn't go that far. 23 with 4 seasons of hockey (albeit with injury plagued seasons) isn't considered that young anymore, especially for dmen. Considering 30 is basically the average tipping point for dmen in this league, 23 is basically the end of youth and the beginning of prime adult years in this league.

I compare him to Klefbom, who is the same age and has also had injury problems. Klefbom is at least showing some sort of offensive ability and his pretty good defensively. It wouldn't be a surprise to see him get better defensively still either, so he could be a solid top 4 by next year or two years from now. But Murray still hasn't figured out the offensive side of the game, which can be a tough sell if a dman wants to play in the top 4 for a long time. His defensive game would have to be great to keep him in there, and his injuries would have to be a thing of the past.

That's how you do it now though. You keep a few core players you believe are most important to your teams success, and cut the rest of the fat before it gets stuck on you with long term contracts. As long as your team can continue making the playoffs it is easy to sign on quality role players every season/2nd season to fill the empty spaces.

Yes but also smart managing of assets. Don't hold on too long to players that you know aren't game changers and always bring in players who are worth more than their current market value.

Toes, Kane and Seabrook are the only 1rst rnders in that core drafted by Chicago. So you could say they got lucky on them, though Seabrook being a late rnder could be attributed to good scouting/drafting, which could be said for Keith, Hjalmarsson, and Crawford. Obviously some luck is always a factor, but given the time they were all drafted and developed, I think management played a large role as well. Then there's the additions through trades/FA that have proven great deals: Hossa, Panarin, Anisimov, Panik, and Campbell (before and now). There's a whole host of other names that use to be on the team too.

That's what happens though when you try to build your core through trades (Leddy, Boychuk, Halak). They never were able to draft and develop strong defenders like Keith and Seabrook. They have Poluck developing right now, but their desire to be good right now may fuck his development up. Either way, when he reaches his prime, the forward core will be closer to the end of their prime years, so it gives them less time to work with.

Panthers are doing fine though. They have a solid young center and dman and few other young players in both those positions. They should be one of the better teams in the Atlantic for a long time still.

But all that aside, they are really one top defender away from being a solid contender. Picking a position you don't need just because the player has the most skill at that age but isn't amazing, is just being stupid. Case in point: the Oilers selecting Yakupov over Murray. Granted, Murray hasn't panned out into a top defender, but he is at least a potential top 4 dman compared to 4th line Yakubust.

Can't say I knew who this was, but I don't see any reason why he couldn't go first. Patrick seems like he could be a solid top center, with a Lecavier kind of pedigree, but it's hard to take that over a potential top minute right hand dman, especially if your team lacks quality dmen to begin with. A team like Vancouver would have a tough decision, being that they need both, but Calgary would probably easily choose the dman, and Arizona would easily choose the center.

Teams should trade their top pick more often though if that first pick isn't top level and doesn't fill their positional needs. At least trade down and pick up two first rnd picks if possible, or a first still in the top 10 and a player that fills a need.

The "taking a dman and trading later" route wouldn't be such a bad idea. They would be more likely to be shit longer that way, so more high draft picks after next year. It is always easier to trade dmen for centers then it is centers for dmen as well. Plus, there are plenty of teams out there with more than one young good center right now. Eberle's value lies in his attacking ability, but any decent team can defend him quite easily. He doesn't think far enough ahead in his actions, and instead uses his hands and quick reflexes to dangle through/around people. If you let him do his stick handling thing, and force him away from the net, then he can't do much because he is very weak along the boards and runs out of speed quickly. Anywhere else away from attacking he is quite weak. Makes good breakout passes, but that's about the only good thing he does outside of the attacking zone.

Nah, that was just propaganda bs put out by NHL/TSN to create hype for the new team. They never had any top level prospects outside of Scheiflie until now. Picking up Laine, plus having Scheiflie stepping up into a top center role is huge shift from 5 years ago.
