Ehh my nigga. I've been studying all your life sciences classes since I was a baby. I hope you want to go into ecology.
Study evolution and taxonomy in your free time to supplement your classes. You should really try for some field experience, get in extracurricular with your professors, TAs and the smart people in your class. Clubs, study groups, lectures whatever. Try to get an internship. Also look for classes that will be in the field "methods in field bio" or some shit like that, it will be the best class you ever take. For the love of life PAY ATTENTION TO MATH, try to learn as much math as you can. As fun as it is you don't want to be stuck doing point counts forever if you want to make a serious contribution. You need to be a theoretical autist to do that.

Yeah, studying ecology is a passion thing. We definitely need more ecologists, even if that just means being literate and communicating ecology as a non-professional. It's a fair bet that ecology will only become more valuable as things continue to get worse. Really a bet for the future because we are fucked if that doesn't happen. There is a lot of untapped money to be made in Agroecology and other applications. Academic ecology will keep growing but it is becoming increasingly competitive.

I'm just focusing on self sufficiency so I can do what I love without having to worry to much about my salary for comfort. Not to mention practicing ecology is sure to be more fun and fulfilling even with all the existential terror that surrounds it.

Physics 1 + Lab
Professional Communication for Engineers (required writing course)
Computer Programming in C
Computer Modeling (solid works)

I'm a first year EE major and the computer Modeling class isn't actually required so I was wondering what I should replace it with. I'll probably get a minor in math/CS so classes in those areas are also good.

Not him but I have friends that went there and they all left to go to different schools within a year.

People who grew up around evergreen know it's a joke of a school but outside the state people think it's a good liberal school so it attracts only the stupidest ultra-SJW crowd.

There are no grades and only self reflections on how the class made you feel. Also the school is surprisingly expensive

Everyone I know who grew up around evergreen talks like tommy Chong. The students know how big of a meme it is too. It does have some advantages in that the sciences are better than your average community college and it's still science so not too much bullshit, and it's easy to use their facilities for research.
It's pretty SJW but it's mostly punkers, anarchists, otakus/furries, and outdoor schizos. All sharing the common dream of wasting their parents money while heavily abusing psychotropic drugs in a cool location. The "SJWs" are pretty cool, not so much like the memes say they are.
I would go there if I was certain I could get into a good grad school afterwards. Because I don't into a shit about undergraduate studies, also I like the area(outdoor schizo) and the culture is entertaining.
I feel like it would have been better in the 90s
>>
>>9105526
You keep saying community college but it's not. It's a 4-year college and tuition for out of state residents is $24k a year

Majoring in Actuarial Science, est.graduation 2020.

I have a large dilemma however and am wondering if any anons may be able to help me out. So my school offers both a B.A. and a B.Sc. in Actuarial Science with the difference literally being 2 semesters of Physics (I've already done Chem and Bio). Thing is that I was godawful at Physics in High School and don't want to spend so much time on it while I've got Actuarial exams to study for.

If anyone has been in a similar situation I'd love to hear what you think.

I'm looking to become an Actuary. I've heard that a math major (which I am) is better than Act Sci because you aren't pigeon holed. Also, no one recruiting Actuaries actually cares that much about degrees (much less BA or BSc). They mostly care about exams and skills. What exams have you taken? Are you any good at VBA, R, etc?
>>
>>9105618
I didn't know that about the type of degree so thanks for the info.
Haven't done any exams as of yet since I'm an incoming freshman; don't know what VBA and R are (excel I presume) but I'm sure I'll get to that at least in the spring.

Act Sci usually has a lot of business classes and coddles you through the exams. Even if you get this major, you still need to do a lot of self study. At least with math or statistics, you have a lot more advanced coursework in math and more opportunities outside actuarial work.

Also, VBA is for excel and R is a statistics software package (it is one among-st many). You will likely have to self learn these. Start with VBA (its really easy and pretty useful).

I really appreciate the advice and all you've explained.

BTW, on the chart it cuts off at 4 exams however I'm pretty sure that I will be done with 5-6. 1 this year which I believe will be FM and then 2 for each subsequent years, how good would that be looking for me.

Also if you have any familiarity with FM how hard is it, because I'm kind of going in completely blind and my advisor told me that the class has 45% failure rate.

If you didn't know, there are two actuarial societies with different exams (the first few are the same). There is the SOA and CAS. The chart refers to the CAS. There are other requirements for ASA/ACAS and FSA/FCAS that you can find online.
I passed FM with an 8/10. The exam requires about 300 hours of study. It is important that you understand, in depth, each topic presented on the exam. You should have to memorize very little. Start with a free manual online (such as Finan), take notes, and do the problems. You need to live and breath the time value of money.
Also, the number of exams seems fine. Take your time and make sure you can pass on the first try. Finally, DO NOT NEGLECT INTERNSHIPS. Many companies primarily recruit new actuaries through their internship programs. Some companies may not even hire people without internships.

Indeed, that's exactly what i've written, it seems to me your reading comprehension is fine, well done. By the end of august i'll have digested 7 textbooks for 3 (just finishing Burris, Sankappanvar) of those courses which should allow me to get through without attending lectures and still get A. Having that time for other classes makes it manageable, especially since i won't be doing any research this semester. After this semester, i'm free to pick whatever classes i want, that gives me three semesters headstart to learn what i want and go back to research.
But it's pointless to justify my decisions to strangers on a kyrghyz yak-milking forum. My advisor thinks i can manage, otherwise she wouldn't have allowed me to do this. Or maybe she wants me out for not listing her first on acknowledgments section.
For any neuroscientist, biochemist or pharmacist, how to get rid of "fog" when you are sleep deprived and focus for too long on one thing? Tried racetams for one week but that didn't seem to have any effect at all on cognitive abities or "fog". Sleeping is not an option obviously, even days 3 hours, odd days 6 hours is how i sleep now.

I got into mine recently. I was 12th in queue. A ton of people pulled out since they didn't pass the prior weed-out class with the grade required to move on.
So, I guess it depends on the class, and it's requirements. EE has a ton of people that weed out bit by bit year by year, so it's not impossible.

Just finished my BA in math. Starting my MS in applied math, taking it easy for first quarter. Hoping to travel a little bit this quarter and give some talks in California on Numerical Analysis. Did my undergrad thesis on simple stuff, hoping to do PhD in it as well.

Courses in pic: (All are graduate level.)
>Foundations of Scientific Computing:
Basic familiarity of Python and various numerical techniques. Should be very easy.
>Intro to Information Theory
Exactly what it sounds like
>Statistical Signal Processing
Fourier Analysis of indeterminate electrical signals. Should be easy.
>>
>>9109844
Of course taking 8 graduate classes in one semester isn't easy, i'm not claiming that. And you definitely can get an A without attending lectures just by studying textbooks and doing all the excercises, as well as the extra excercises given out by proffesor. I did that with analysis in undergrad (just Zorich and big Rudin) and there's no reason why it shouldn't work in grad. The books are thorough and there are 2 or more for each class, that's not what i worry about. I mostly worry about the big homeworks which usually take a week, having 8 classes means i'll need to do that in 3 days which might be a problem for difficult classes like algebraic geometry. But i'm hyped for the upcoming semester, it's going to decide whether i'm a brainlet or not. If i can't handle it, there's no way i could handle PhD.

I have a similar course-load except that the mathematics courses are the graduate versions, switch probability for complex analysis, and I am a freshman in undergraduate school. I wouldn't get too excited about 'honors' undergraduate courses. They go a third of the pace of what should honestly be mandatory by law honestly.
The Putnam doesn't look too bad honestly. The main issue for most people is a lack of proper background knowledge. For most exams you only need 8 or so of the problems for the fellow and the first problem of each section takes half an hour at most. Hence, you get an hour for each major problem, which is completely achievable.
