Does modern math have an explanation for mind-reading tricks like pic related? Do we need to create a new system where things like dividing by zero are not impossible?

X*2
X*2+10
(X*2+10)/2= X + 5
X +5 - X = 5

[eqn]
\begin{aligned}
\sqrt{2} \cdot 2 &= 2\sqrt{2} \\
2\sqrt{2} + 10 &= 2\sqrt{2} + 10 \\
\frac{2\sqrt{2} + 10}{2} &= \sqrt{2} + 5 \\
\sqrt{2} + 5 = 5
\end{aligned}
[/eqn]
O-Oh...

This image only works for integers between 1-10
>>
>>8195559
no
>>
>>8195564
Yes. If you realize there are numbers bigger than 10 then you realize why it works
>>
>>8195558
if you wanted to use an emoji of a position as a symbol for a free variable you could. nothing says you can't

i don't have the slightest idea of what you said here
the image works for any real number

Pick some [math] n[/math]. Then [math]\frac{ 2(n)+10}{2}=n+5 [/math]. Subtract [math] n[/math] and obviously we have 5.

In general, if we choose some [math] a,b\in\mathbb{R}[/math] then following the steps "multiply by [math] a [/math], then add [math] b [/math], then divide by [math] a [/math] and subtract [math] n[/math]" will give you a result of [math] \frac{a}{b}[/math].

What exactly is mysterious here?

>works for any real number
Let x = -1.

-1 × 2 = -2
-2 + 10 = 8
8 ÷ 2 = 4
8 - (-1) = 9

you mean b/a
way to fuck up your smug post

Starting: -1
Multiply by two: -2
Add 10: 8
Divide by 2: 4
Subtract initial number: 4 - (-1) = 5

Daily reminder x^2 divided by 2 does not equal x

Daily reminder that 1 + 4 does not equal 2

you mean every complex number.

Probably for any field
>>
>>8195537

Does anyone have one of these that is less obvious? I've seen better ones. OP's is so simple it's humorous.
>>
>>8195907
Substracting a number from its reverse always yields a difference that is a product of 9.

Example:

42 - 24 = 18 -> 18/9 = 2

876 - 678 = 198 -> 198/9 = 22

4203 - 3024 = 1179 -> 1179/9 = 139

What do you mean by "we", Peasant?
>>
>>8195537

((2x+10)/2)-x = 5

simplify it:

5+x-x =5

5 = 5

If you squint enough it also works for square matrices, if you define "adding 10" as adding 10*I.
>>
>>8199580
obviously works in any ring in which 2 is not a zero divisor.

Yes, it's called algebra.
It's also far from modern.
