These magazine were closely followed (even obsessed over) by white teen girls because these magazines essentially acted as the white teen girl echo chamber. Yet these magazines tended to fuel social anxiety and interestingly despite their ability to meet the demands of their(white) consumers, and hire (predominantly white)teen girl writers, these magazines had a poor at best grasp of the realities of teenage life and the desires of the opposite sex.
Conversely black teen girls read magazines targeting more mature audiences, tending toward diverse and black audiences, displaying various body types and life styles, and had a wider range of topics. The black girls in the study tended to use more independent thought when analyzing the messages of these articles and elsewhere(a function of the interaction between the diversity of opinion held by their peer group and the magazines).These magazines did not negatively impact the psychology of the girls and in fact promoted more sound self image, a sort of realism, and a stronger grasp of the desires of the opposite sex.
