Now go over there and ask him if he'd like some company. Talk to him about his wife but be very careful. Now steer the conversation into the direction of talking about his house. (eg. "Keeping up a house on your own must be pretty hard") and offer to mow his lawn/ help him around the house.
You must be very smart and careful while you are doing this.
If he agrees then set up a date and actually go there and do some chores but the more important thing is talking with the man regularely. Whenever he offers to pay you in cash politely decline.

If all goes well and you don't do anything stupid he will offer to give the house/ property to you at some point.

Trust me, I'm speaking from experience. Lots of old people are very lonely and ready to give up their belongings to people who actually (seem to) care about them
