Never really thought the audience was supposed to see Rick as a "deep" character. I thought he was supposed to be a reference to the scientist from Back to the Future. The twist on the character is that he has "seen it all" as a result of his time travel experiments and has become a nihilist through it all.
I think I have a shallow interpretation of the compared to you. I never really saw any depth in Rick and Morty, though. Most people who think the show is smart probably just don't naturally come up with the type of humor that the creators express in the show. I think it has something to offer but it so rarely shows itself that 99% of the show is as you say it is.
The moment where bird person tells morty what wubalubadubdub means or when rick tries to kill himself is what I'm getting at here.

whoa so I drank the kool aid for this show a couple years ago, watched the eps a bunch, went back and watched a few episodes from season 1 and the show was always bad. was fun to ride the hype wave though, maybe that's all it needed to be.

It's become too reddit to hate Reddit and Memey now so I'm just gonna say that I'm indifferent towards it. I've seen a couple episodes and thought they were okay but I'm not hooked on the show. And I don't tune in to watch Rick and Morty because fuck Adult Swim for canceling Metalocalypse
