Hi everyone! I'm back from the /nightwalk/. I recorded videos with commentary that totalled around 50 minutes in length, split up into several smaller and more easily digestible videos. I think they were interesting. I walked around and climbed into my old abandoned school, and explored in there whilst talking about some of my memories from that time.

I was absolutely gutted that my phone died before I could finish the last video. It got to 10 minutes and I was just about to end it when it died, so my phone didn't save it. But basically in that one I walked around outside and old people's home and showed what looked like a dead woman sitting in the window, walked by a scout's hall and talked about how the men in charge of it when I went were probably pedos, and did a short sprint down the road. I talked about how recording the videos made it feel like there was someone with me, and how much you all meant to me.

Hello everyone, hope you're all well. Tonight I'm thinking about a few things. Firstly, the relationship between our thoughts and our emotions. More specifically, can we use logic to cure our emotional hangups by discrediting their theoretical bases?

I don't really know. Previously I thought that we could, and that was why I liked to post long and detailed posts about various topics pertaining to psychology, emotions, the personal ramifications of NEEThood, etc, but lately I've been thinking that maybe emotions and logic may be separate from each other. I've been suspecting this due to a number of revelations about my feelings:

Despite knowing that logically, the only person's opinions (regarding both my appearance and how I behave) who matter are my own, since to rely on the approval of others for our self-esteem is unsustainable in the long-term and deprives us of our unique individuality, I still cannot help detesting myself because I think other people think I am ugly, and I still cannot help detesting myself for my awkwardness.

Even though I know that it is illogical to believe that I have 'girlish' behaviour and tendencies, since owing to the very wide variation of behaviour within either sex it is impossible to accurately define 'female behaviour' and my own behaviour is as legitimately part of the male spectrum of behaviour as any other since I am biologically male, I still get frequent feelings of wishing I was a girl. This has made me feel very sad on occasions because I know I can never be a girl, and I would never pass as a girl even if I were to begin futile transition procedures.

This is why I have been doubting whether or not emotional hangups can be cured, or even eased, through logically discrediting them. Maybe it can help, and maybe I just need to give it more time. Still, when I am in emotional agony all my logic is useless to me.

There are other things I'm thinking about too tonight, but I am at the character limit. I'll make another post.

I felt horrible pang of jealousy yesterday. It really brought me down, very suddenly too. It was almost like my emotions had done a U-turn in an instant.

So what is jealousy? What causes jealousy? And how can jealousy be managed so that it doesn't overwhelm us? I think I've touched on this a little bit before. I've just seen that there is apparently a distinction between jealousy and envy, but I'm going to continue to say jealousy anyway. It won't change the details.

Jealousy: the desire to have what someone else has. It's very interesting, because without that other person in the picture we are left only with our desires. This can be a positive emotion: it can motivate us to work towards achieving our desires and give us purpose, something necessary in my opinion to avoid atrophy from purposelessness. Yet, when the person who already possesses what we desire is added to the mix, it turns this positive emotion into a very negative one. Why does this happen? Why does seeing the person who already has what we want not motivate us even more?

The answer, I believe, is that the inclusion of the other person adds an element of inadequacy which was absent when we were left with our desires alone. Jealousy can therefore be mitigated by resolving feelings of inadequacy. So now we need to go even deeper. What causes feelings of inadequacy? I think I've explored this already but I can't find anything in the archives.

I think inadequacy is just a derivative of dissatisfaction with ourselves for not meeting the standards we hold ourselves to, and that is what we should really focus on. The other person really just emphasises how we have not met these standards yet, which is what amplifies the negative emotion. So now we have to go even deeper, to the very core of all this: how do we learn to love ourselves, or at least not hate ourselves, even if we are not our ideal self?

Let's first assume that our standards are not unrealistic; if they are, they should be readjusted to be reasonable. Once that's been done we can look at solutions. We could work towards being the person we want to be and make sure to fully appreciate the progress we are making with each step forward, however small that step may be. But what are we to do if it is impossible to become our ideal self? What if we our chained by our biology? Or what if our ideal self is so different from how we are now that it might as well be fully unattainable? That is a very difficult situation, and one that sadly I am not sure has a happy solution. There is one thing that may soothe the pain though: relative comparison.

We may be able to at least make ourselves feel a little better by focusing on the parts of us that we do like, and reminding ourselves that we could be even further from our ideal self than we are now. For example, if we wished that we were more confident and sociable because we are hopelessly autistic, we could praise ourselves for that one time we were able to hold a semi-decent conversation, and remind ourselves that at least we are someone who has the physical capacity to use their voice. If we hate our appearance, we can imagine ourselves if we looked even worse. Or if we wished we were more developed in a particular skill, we can try to take a step back and look objectively at what proficiency we DO have in that skill, and remind ourselves that there are people out there who cannot do that skill at all and would admire us for what little proficiency we may have. It's not a brilliant solution or a cure, but it is a bandage, an anaesthetic.

Whew! That really took a lot of effort to think through. I hope it's been useful to you in some way, anon. I do have another thing I've been thinking about but I think I'll save it for tomorrow night because I'm quite mentally tired and will probably give myself a headache if I try to think any further.
