Same here anon. Most of them were just late bloomers and turned into what females would consider "hot" after puberty but nature wasn't as kind to me.

I just been looking at their facebooks now and its like they are living the sort of lifestyle that you only see on TV shows, multiple holidays abroad with friends and other half's plus shots of them sitting outside of tents at concerts.

The faculty I applied to had a bunch (5 or 6 iirc) of studentships available. They were advertised on the funding section of the programme's page, and every applicant is considered so no separate application was necessary. I just submitted my application for the programme, received an unconditional offer, and a few weeks later was offered the studentship.

I convinced them of my academic merit through my grades and wrote a solid personal statement. I had achieved a strong Merit for my previous Master's, and basically told them that I wanted to work in academia. My application also had two samples of written work, both of which were postgrad essays in the 70%-75% mark range.

That's it really, it was very easy for me to write my application because it's actually something I want to do. If you're keen on doing something, everything else comes naturally because you're expressed genuine interest.
