This was back in a time when people that had lived under British occupation were still alive, and so to "believe in the 4th of July" is to believe that the independence that was won during the American Revolution was valid and secured rightfully. Some people whom were Loyalists did not believe the revolution was the right decision, and their loyalty was not to the U.S. but to the Crown (and these are the types of people who cheered when Commonwealth troops burned down the White House in the War of 1812).
