I feel like it was fine if you detach it from everyone's expectation of it being some overblown dramatic story of the real Big Boss becoming some tragic fallen hero. In that sense, I feel like it's deliberately underwhelming, because I doubt Kojima wouldn't have known people would eat that shit up and then make the story he did.

I prefer Big Boss as the evil manipulative cunt operating behind the scenes, though. That's how the overt Metal Gear villains have always worked and it was neat that he ended up the same way. Fans already formed some weird hero-worship cult around him anyway.

I will give you bosses and codec conversations, but the nature of a Metal Gear game is thematic as well as gameplay-based, which Rising really came up short on. It also wasn't remotely tactical and only cursorily featured stealth, so it barely even met one and a half of the elements of MGS' tagline.
