House prices are high because of zoning and planning laws that restrict greenfield development. Essentially, even though Australia has almost limitless land, it is illegal to build on most of it. There is only a tiny sliver zoned 'residential' and allowed to be developed. The price of this tiny amount of land is bid up to huge prices by all the developers vying for it, and this filters down to the price of homes people buy.

It's an easy fix (get rid of land rationing/zoning laws) but state governments aren't interested in trying it.
