Ten years ago an ORION Colony Ship was commandeered by a collection of miners, scientists and civilian workers in an effort to escape the reaches of Earth’s tyrannical governments, and her power hungry corporations. The ship landed on a lonely, ice choked planet orbiting a young star further than any human had dared to go before. The colonists named the planet Last Hearth, a testament to how far they had come. The early years were hard, but an abundance of natural resources made life on the frozen planet prosperous. Sure enough, the peaceful settlers formed a proper government and elected Einar Moen, leader of the mutiny against ORION, as their first Prime Minister.

In recent years, Last Hearth has been seeded with Terran Flora and Fauna accustomed to colder temperatures. A new religion, Stewardship, has gained favor with the population, supplanting Earthborn Faiths as the creed of the Hearthian settlers. Advancements in robotics have made mining far more efficient. Even the Mother Star’s asteroid belt has begun to be mined for valuable minerals. By all accounts, Last Hearth is a paradise. But how long can it remain that way?

A scouting mission beyond the L2 Lagrange Wormhole has revealed a human colony merely one jump from Last Hearth. Nothing is known about this colony, or the planet it resides on. The mood on Last Hearth is bipolar to say the least, with many happy to know that even this far out in the black they are not alone, but others fear that the foreign colony may be loyal to ORION. Will the Hearthians reach out to these unknown colonists, or will they prepare for conflict? Or perhaps they will ignore them in hopes that Last Hearth remain undiscovered?

It’s all up to you.

Setting Notes: The Church of the Stewards of Jesus Christ and the Illuminated Buddha

The Church of the Stewards is a new sect of Syncretic Christianity that refers to itself as Third Testament Christianity. The holy scripture contains three main books; the Old, New and Third Testaments. The Third Testament tells of the truths revealed to Bodhisattvas throughout human history and explains how they, like Jesus Christ, and the rest of Humanity, are the Children of God. What makes the Bodhisattvas unique is Enlightenment, a Spiritual connection to Nature and God that transcends Knowledge, and even Faith. Bodhisattvas, in their Enlightenment, are able to perceive beyond Reality, the Body of God and into Samsara, the Mind of God. At this point the Enlightened ascends, escaping the wheel of Reincarnation, and becomes a Deity themselves, subservient only to the Supreme God, Jehovah.

Notable Bodhisattvas in the Steward Tradition are the Buddha, Zoroaster, Enoch, Abraham (and the other Abrahamic Patriarchs), King Solomon, Elijah, Moses, Jesus, The Virgin Mary, Muhammad, Rumi, Joan of Arc and Haile Selassie among many, many others.

Stewardship holds that there is a spiritual hierarchy emanating from Jehovah with Bodhisattvas ruling directly under him. The Bodhisattvas (and Jesus Christ, the King of the Buddhas) in turn rule over Angels, who do their bidding as well as that of the Supreme God. Lower than the Angels, but beholden to no one, are the Kami. The Kami are “Gods” of Nature, who bless and curse as they please. Though the Kami are to be venerated, they are not to be “worshiped,” for they are fickle creatures. Kami are generally thought to be the Gods of Old (Odin, Thor, Zeus, Osiris, Izanami and Izanagi etc.) before the truth of Jehovah was revealed to Abraham and the Old Covenant signed.

The exact tenets of the Stewards are up to individual congregations (Stewardship draws its overarching structure from Congregationalism), though most agree on everything listed above. The Ten Commandments and Mosaic Law are generally seen as guidelines, with more importance placed on community consensus than strict hierarchy. For instance, Divorce is permitted by most Congregations, especially in the case of abuse. Since Stewards believe the Soul enters the body at the moment of birth, Abortion is frequently also permitted. Homosexuality tends to accepted as well. However, the key Unifying Tenet of Stewardship is that other systems of belief are “Unhealthy.” Since these false faiths frequently do not accept the teachings of even a few of the Bodhisattvas, they are necessarily diseased. Stewards therefore take it upon themselves to act as the Spiritual “Stewards” of Humanity, saving others from their narrow-minded and false beliefs. So far this takes the form of proselytizing, of which Stewards have proven to be very effective, but who knows how this may change in the future.

> A spy ship fitted with experimental radar jamming technology is sent beyond the L2 Wormhole. After 8 hours, it returns with survey data of the new star system. The system is an A7 main sequence White Sun, with 6 planets (3 gas giants, 3 terrestrial), one of which is habitable. The habitable world is even colder than Last Hearth, consisting of ice sheets covering a planet spanning ocean, with only a few small islands and micro-continents dotting the surface. From radio transmissions picked up by the Scout, it seems that the colony is a COMINTERN Gulag; a prison colony shipping natural resources to other Socialist Colonies.

>RANDOM EVENT!

The spy ship in the new system picks up further radio transmissions; the system has been designated “Perun” by COMINTERN, with the colony referred to as “Sibir.” The transmissions elaborate that the prisoners on Sibir are becoming unruly, with many seeking to overthrow the existing hierarchy on the planet. It seems that COMINTERN has already written the colony off as a loss however, and plans to evacuate, but not before destroying existing infrastructure for offworld transportation. Consul Einar Moen makes three proposals to the Parliament for future action;

1 - A coordinated effort to strike early and liberate the prisoners could save much of the existing infrastructure on the planet, but could alert COMINTERN to the presence of Last Hearth only a single Lagrange Jump away.

2 - Alternatively, waiting for COMINTERN to abandon the colony to its fate would avoid military engagement, but much of the high tech infrastructure on the planet will have been destroyed by then.

3 - Last Hearth could reach out to COMINTERN and offer to take the Gulag off their hands. This would drain Last Hearth’s economic and industrial resources, but would resolve the situation without significant conflict.

Can we use the jamming tech on our spy ship to jam communications?
Ensure to leave no survivors, do not claim the planet in case of COMINTERN investigations and make a freak accident that lead to the destruction of the evacuees

I think there is value in claiming their tech for our own. Correct me if I'm wrong, so far we are only able to live in the equator of Last Hearth because of the temperatures.
This planet is colder than ours and they should have tech that allows us to live further away from the equator allowing for short term expansion without waiting for our greenhouse gases to terraform the planet.

After a month of waiting, it becomes clear that COMINTERN has evacuated the colony, leaving their prisoners behind on Sibir with minimal infrastructure. Estimates from reconnaissance show approximately 20,000 prisoners on the world, concentrated into a single settlement.

What is the next course of action?

> Interviewing and Integration

Humanitarian efforts are launched to integrate the prisoners on Sibir into the fold. Most of the prisoners were political dissidents, opponents of communism who did nothing wrong but speak out against COMINTERN governments. As such, almost all of the prisoners are found to be fit for integration into Last Hearth. One side effect of this process was the large scale conversion of these immigrants to Stewardship, as much of the humanitarian efforts were run by members of the Church.

The research bounty from the venture was less successful, though technology for settlements in even colder conditions that of equatorial Last Hearth have been scavenged.

> Agricultural and Settlement Initiatives

In response to the growing needs of the Hearthian population, as well as to spur further population growth, large scale “homestead initiatives” are launched. Many of these homesteading charters use technology appropriated from the former Sibir Gulag. Further application of safe greenhouse gases has already expanded the habitable range by a few degrees beyond the tropics, and now with new infrastructure technology, further growth (and thus more rapid climate change) is now possible.
