The year is 2084 and the United States of America leads ATLAS (Atlantic League of Allied States) in war against the USSR and COMINTERN (Communist International Alliance). Due to the use of nuclear weapons, much of the Earth has become irradiated and uninhabitable. However, all hope is not lost. The genius scientists employed by the ORION Corporation have discovered that the Lagrange points surrounding suitably large celestial bodies (such as stars, and theoretically some super-sized gas giants) contain microscopic wormholes that connect to the Lagrange points around other stars. With the help of the Lagrange Engine, properly equipped spaceships can now travel to distant star systems in the blink of an eye. Both ATLAS and COMINTERN are racing to colonize beyond the solar system to secure both future prosperity and resources for their citizens. ORION too, has struck out into the black, dreaming of independence from the laws and restrictions of Earth-bound nations.

You will control the destiny of one of thousands of colony ships launched in the wake of this discovery (and hopefully the resulting colony)! But first, who is your benefactor?

((OOC: This is a reboot of a Quest thread I posted in /tg/ about a week ago. I botched the opening and left out too much, so hence me restarting it here.))

1 - ATLAS (Blue)
The capitalistic and mostly democratic ATLAS is the loose federation of dozens of countries somewhat in the vein of the EU. ATLAS is headed by the United States, forming the ATLAS Security Council with delegates from Japan, South Korea, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Israel, Australia, India and South Africa.
> Pros: Colonies will grow faster and have quite a bit of freedom in their operations.
> Cons: Human rights abuses will not be tolerated.

2 - COMINTERN (Red)
As the chief rival and current enemy of ATLAS, COMINTERN seeks to bring the light of socialism to the world. Led by the USSR, prominent members of the Bloc include China, Brazil, Iran and Cuba.
> Pros: Higher industrial efficiency and a more obedient populace.
> Cons: Don’t expect to ignore requests from back home.

3 - ORION (Yellow)
A joint Swiss-Norwegian conglomerate, the ORION Corporation has made trillions of dollars playing COMINTERN and ATLAS off each other. Now, dreaming of the frontier, they seek to set out on their own colonization ventures in an effort to further cement their independence.
> Pros: Strong economic sense and near total autonomy. Colonies can “buy” their independence.
> Cons: Until you become independent, expect to be sending a lot of resources to the home office.

Your colony ship operates on an ORION Corporate charter. What type of colonial charter do you have?

1 - CORPORATE
> Pros: Higher colonist skill. Good base morale.
> Cons: Home office will be breathing down your necks.

2 - RESOURCE EXTRACTION
> Pros: Colony will start with more goodies.
> Cons: Space miners aren’t known for their culture, or their brains.

3 - MUTINY
> Pros: High base morale. Starts off independent.
> Cons: Not only have you made an enemy of ORION, you have no one to help bail you out when something inevitably goes wrong.

You are mutinous scum who have outright stolen a colony ship from ORION Corporation. Who led the revolt? (choice of leader will also determine starting government type)

1 - Einar Moen, Norwegian, Age 40, Head of ORION Mining Operations on Titan
> The charismatic Einar Moen was the head of mining operations on Titan before he led a revolt of miners and other laborers in an effort to secure their future away from greedy hands of home office.
> GOVERNMENT TYPE: Colonial Council (Elected council members serve until retirement or death, with the option of a vote of no confidence to recall them. Can be easily reformed into other Government types.)

2 - Sakura Adachi, Japanese, Age 34, ORION Associate Scientist for the Lagrange Project
> The brilliant and beautiful Sakura Adachi was an Associate Scientist on the Lagrange Project before stealing a colony ship and recruiting scores of former ORION employees to staff it. Sakura seeks to create a Scientific Utopia on a far off world, unburdened by earthly influence and ethics.
> GOVERNMENT TYPE: Science Directorate (A meritocracy ruled by the Academia, with a massive boost to science and technology.)

3 - Luca Gast, Swiss, Age 53, ORION Board Member
> Luca Gast is a staunch anarcho-capitalist who saw ORION’s attempted exit from the influence of Earth as an opportunity for an exit himself.
> GOVERNMENT TYPE: Anarcho-Capitalist (The Market will reign supreme, with little to no “true” government outside of the Military.)

The mutiny was organized by Sakura Adachi, relying on support from Einar Moen and his space miners. The colony’s starting government will be a Colonial Council, determined through merit and a limited form of democracy where only government officials, civil servants and qualified academics may run for office. This system may be reformed in the future.

The colonists will be a mix of Japanese and Norwegian nationals, with many of the miners recruited hailing from the Americas, Australia and South Africa.

Though travelling through a Lagrange Wormhole is nearly instantaneous, travelling to them is not. Since physical space is still an obstacle, travel within star systems remains a lengthy endeavor. As such, a certain kind of informal designation has surfaced for describing the “temporal distance” of other worlds.

How far are you willing to run?

1 - LOCAL SECTOR (1 - 5 Lagrange Jumps from SOL) (5 random star systems will be generated for you to choose from.)
> PROS: Close to civilization, so trading will be easier.
> CONS: Close to civilization, so expect interference from others.

2 - FRONTIER SECTOR (5 - 9 Lagrange Jumps from SOL) (3 random star systems will be generated for you to choose from.)
> PROS: More privacy.
> CONS: Trading will be more difficult.

3 - THE UNKNOWN (10+ Lagrange Jumps from SOL) (Your starting system and planet will be completely random.)
> PROS: No competition for planets and resources until the colony is well established.
> CONS: No one can hear you scream.

>>298230

>Scouting
> Last Hearth’s 100,000 population is divided into 8 settlements on/near the equator of the planet for optimal comfort and planting. It has a single moon, which is larger than Earth’s, resulting in more intense tidal phenomena. There is a single continent spanning nearly 60% of the planet's surface. Though volcanism plentiful, there are few mountain ranges. Instead, most of the pressure and heat are released through hot springs and geysers. The biosphere is minimal, supporting native alien microbes along with fungi, moss and lichen analogues. Once a bioengineering lab is built for wildlife cloning and introduction purposes, Caribou, Salmon, Penguins and various other arctic/sub-arctic flora and fauna will be easily introduced.

We are on a tundra world, not a frozen water world, thus we have a simple solution; we pollute the ever-living fuck out of the atmosphere with CO2 and such, resulting in a greenhouse effect raising the temperature.

This would of course have serious side effects, like destabilising the planets ecosystems, causing acidic rain and generally being a problem.

Alternatively we can try to develop a "safe" greenhouse gas which won't result in acid rain and study the planet in great detail, allowing for us to predict the results of heating it up and therefore prepare for them.

Both of these however are long term projects, with one being significantly longer(, more expensive and difficult) than the other but with less side effects.

Short term we just need to get our shit up and running, maybe develop more efficient cold specialised tech so I doubt we could attempt such a project.
>>
>>298249
Let's set a thermal plant near one of the geyser sectors to kick start our industry
>>
>>298239
After landing the settlers quickly set up 8 settlements made from pre-fab infrastructure that was brought with them. Food supply will last for at least 6 months without agriculture, but greenhouses have just been set up, allowing the colony to be self-reliant in terms of food. Solar panels are currently used for electricity.

I think its time, now we have established ourselves well, to abolish this colonial council and create a proper republic, with rights and all that fun stuff
>>

+1 for a decent republic, specific kind (democratic, military, etc.) is unimportant. Also going to vote for strengthening military again, even if only by increasing size, since having jt at 1 is making me nervous. Things are going TOO well, you know? They're gonna get real starship troopers real fast.

> Reform the Government
> It has been 10 years since the colonists of Last Hearth landed on her frozen plains. Now there caribou grazing on transplanted grasses, fish swimming up icy rivers and mines plunging into the depths of her crust. The populations has grown by an astonishing 15%. On the tenth anniversary of planetfall, the Council has decided to reform the government along more democratic lines, creating a Parliamentary Republic, strengthening the militias and establishing a formal economic system. Einar Moen is elected Prime Minister.

>POST ENDS IN 88 - RANDOM EVENT

A new religious movement combining the animistic elements of Shinto Buddhism with Christian theology and Norse Neopagan influences has spread like wildfire through the colony. This new syncretic religion, called the Church of the Stewards of Christ and the Buddha, colloquially referred to as Stewardship, reveres both the Spirits of Nature (including both old Norse and Japanese deities) and enlightened Bodhisattvas, of which Christ is considered to be. However, this has caused much tension between the colony’s Christian plurality and the new followers of this strange religion.

They have not detected the presence of the scout due to the cunning of the crew, though they jumped away before they could gather much data on the system. It seems that Last Hearth’s system is a “spoke” connecting two Lagrange Wormhole Chains at the 15 Jump Distance mark.

We should prepare a proper defense be fore we start raiding, as soon as we start there will be a punitive fleet sent our way.

A scout on the other side of each wormhole and a couple of minelayers would probably be enough.
As soon as the fleet pops up in the neighbouring system the scout returns, the minelayers then turn the wormhole into a deathtrap. Since the incoming fleet has no way of knowing about that it will be wiped out upon arrival.
>>
>>301469
I'm fine with the concept of citizens getting representation, my beef comes from the notion of having two factions vying for control of the colony. Unless we do it diarchy style, it's going to end with lots of intrigue and internal bs clogging up the works.

This is gonna be weird no matter what, may as well make something neat.
>>

>>
>>301923
To be frank this is a accurate representation of how colonies in the new world would have looked after certain events.

Really what we have here is us founding our Mormonism-equivalent religion and it being followed by most of the population unlike in real life.

Actually that gives me an idea, some of the tenets of the Mormon religion are quite useful (that one about being prepared for the world ending for instance), should we attempt to implement them. Maybe also add in the Sikh thing of always carrying a weapon in also thus making our people far harder to invade.
>>
>>302278
Can we blame the world ending on xenos and other humans so we can easily go to war
>>
>>302343
Almost certainly. Aliens killed Jesus and we're going to spread enlightenment forcibly.
>>
>>302343
I'd rather we interpret it as "Some day, some one, some where will decide to kill us. We need to be ready for that" because declaring a source blinds us to every other possibility.

>>302357
Clearly god made the aliens but they don't follow his faith, thus we must head out and convert them. Removing all the heretics as we go!
