Recap:
>We are playing a low fantasy, hardmode fairy civ in the desert. Our Queen just passed away at an inopportune time due to sickness. She was the most powerful Watercaller of our people and we only had a few days until the full moon. When she would have enough power to summon the rain once more. The people had to scramble and pull the next best fae for the job, Azore and handmaiden and magical apprentice to the queen. The ritual was long and intense and has left Azore bedridden for a week but it was successful.
>Now with a good supply of food and water the new Quee,n Meri, and an village elder, Firo, who has a good sway over the people, asked his Granddaughter Scorpia to lead the largest scouting party the fairfolk have ever seen.
>The scouting party took the majority of the people's forces and said they would be back in 3 days if water wasn't found and 6 if it was. It is now Night 3 and there has been no word.

The tensions are high, rumors of failure are spreading, the people are scared.

As the sun sets and the fairies all gather, in what is becoming an almost nightly congregation, few speak up "Can we scry or send a signal? How do we know they are ok?"

Firo steps forward "We must trust that they are safe and have hope that this means they found water. We can send up a smoke signal but that has two possible ramifications, they think we are in trouble and return early compromising the mission, or worse we attract the attention of a predator."

This insights a roar of murmurs as every talks to their neighbors at once. A voice rings out that quickly silences the crowd
"Fairfolk, it will be ok, Scorpia has proven her ability out in the sands. If we are still worried in two more moon rises we can see if Azore can scry on them for us." The Queens voice has an almost magical effect of easing the tension.

The fairies accept this and return to their homes for the evening. Family's gather in the cracks, crags, and alcoves of the rock in which they live. Pieces of animal hide and sun-dried plant leaves dot the crag making it look like some sort of natural favela. Not then most secure but fairly well hidden. A creature would have to get within 15 feet to see the homes.

Two more moons pass. It is Day 5 since the scouts left and there has been no word. What would you like to Do?
>Wake Azore and have her scry (Will be difficult)

How would the smoke signal alert the predators? Animals are afraid of fire.
Also are we the only sentient race in the world OP ?

Yes, most animals are.
>Also are we the only sentient race in the world OP ?
As far as the fairies know they are the only humanoids. They have met very intelligent predators though.

Even after the Queen's reassurance the population was only growing more fearful. They decided to ask Azore.

She was found in her home, awake, but looking exhausted. "I can try...."

The casting of this spell is less of a ritual but still requires some components. Azore rifles through some scrolls and finds the one she needs. "I don't ever remember our Lady casting this..." Azore heads to the top of the rock and pours water in to a shallow divot. She draws a circle with charcoal around her and kneels in front of the pool of water. She begins the incantation and the water ripples with her words.

I need a 1d100 roll for scrying. Some modifiers that have helped you.
>Normal difficulty 60% Fail Rate
>Asking Azore to complete it +5% Success (Divination is not her specialty)
>Gibbous Moon casting +10% Success
Current difficulty 45% Fail Rate - You have to roll below a 55, low is good, a 100 is a catastrophic fail.

You did get this!

The incantation stops and one last ripple rolls out revealing an image.

10 fairies sit in a tight circle at the bottom of an impossibly deep gorge, a slow moving river, twists past them. They look harried, some of them have dark bruises and damaged wings.

The spell worked perfectly, you have both visual and sound. Azore's eyes are glazed over and her arms are held out pointing towards the pool shaking but she is able to hold it.

The scouts are scanning around, on guard, you see a shadow on the gorge wall behind them shift and crawl towards them. You can't tell what it is.

Fairies cry out trying to get the attention of the party but it will never reach them.

A noise pulls the attention of the circle away from the shifting shadow. It lunges, surrounds one of the fairies and both disappears. The water splashes as if a rock is dropped into it and the visual fades and Azore blacks out.

The rock erupts in chaos. Cries ring out "We need to help! We must leave!"

Firo and Meri begin talking aloud, "We know the direction they went but we don't know where. They are at least 4 days out." He says

"We will be exposed, we have a handful of seasoned fighters, what will the rest of us do? Azore is out for who knows how long, we will have to carry her and all the supplies." Meri replies

Their arguments continue for a few minutes more before it ends. Meri is visibly upset but Firo calls out to the people "Everyone gather all your belongings, leave what isnt necessary we must leave immediately. When you are ready we will meet back up here at the top of the rock. Once everyone is here we will fly west, as high as we can, searching for this gorge."

The fairies scatter and begin gathering their belongings. It takes hours but they gather what they need. Some are unhappy about moving but none wish to stay behind because they know without Azore there is no water.

All the water is gathered and will be brought with but they can not carry all the food too. 1 weeks supply is left behind.

There are 5 fairies who are properly armed with light armor and spears. 2 of which are old and retired. Everyone else has makeshift weapons of cactus needles, sharp stones, and staves. Azore is carried in a makeshift stretcher, tied down tight for safety.

The fairies begin taking off, flying in v formations, leaving their home for the first time any of them can remember

The first day passes without much issue. The skies are clear and the desert is quiet. However there is no gorge in sight. The fairies land as the sun sets, tired from a fast, long journey.

It is the first night homeless, searching for Scorpia and her team. What do you want to do?

Sorry! Yesterday was busy but today I should be around for multiple updates!

The scouts set up a rotation around the camp. The evening passes uneventfully.

A lot of the other fairies were not able to sleep last night, they were worried, panicked, or just not used to sleeping so vulnerably. With that, the next day's travel is slower, you get about half as far as you probably should. Stopping for frequent water breaks. Another evening approaches and still no sign of Scorpia's party, but it is still probably too soon.

The third day comes and now is when everyone is on high alert. Give me a d100 roll for checking for tracks or signs of Scorpia's party

The next day goes by and nothing. Parties of 5 are sent out farther and farther from the core of group.

The sun starts to set and all but one party is back. The fairies begin setting up camp. As the last days of sun dip under the horizon the people watch, looking for that last party to come back.

The sun disappears and the sky grows darker, then far off on the horizon the party is racing back at full speed. You watch as the get closer and closer, flying at an amazing speed.

They reach the camp panting sweating, one blacks out. Between the gasps you make out the message. *pant...pant* "We" *pant* "found the gorge..." and with that he collapses.

What do you want to do?

Everyone had already gathered to see what the incoming fairies were going to say. At the news everyone starts rushing around talking, relaying the information across the group.

Firo turns to everyone "Be Prepared! EYES ON, WEAPONS FREE!" He shakes the down fairy a little, "what did you see, where are they?"

*pant* "I don't know, all we saw was the lip of the gorge, there" *pant* "were only five of us, so we turned around and came back as" *pant* "fast as possible."

"Thank you, you may have just saved us," Firo says patting him on the shoulder. Queen Meri is next to him and says "We must get more information before we leave. Send another larger party out."

Firo responds, "I agree, maybe 8, have them all go to the gorge then have 6 come back and stop at a quarter of the way back, then send 4 to stop at half and the last 2 to stop at the third quarter, that way, if we need to we can relay messages up the line faster." With that, they send out the new party.

The moon crawls higher and higher, it feels like the night will be over before they hear anything. The crowd is ready to take off. Everything is packed, the miscellaneous weapons are drawn, and they shift, watching the horizon from when they came. At about 10pm one fairy returns.

"The line is set up, we don't see them down in the gorge, but Lella went down and scouted quickly. She found where they were standing when we scryed, we are in the right place."

Firo turns to everyone and says "Let's go". Like the scrambling of jets, all the fairies start running in unison. Taking off after about 10 steps. They hit the air and start speeding towards the gorge.

The fairies at 25/50/75 guide the way joining formation as the entirety of your people pass over the head. The gorge was about an hour and a half away.

As they reach the edge the fairies pour over going into a nose dive towards the river. The buzzing from the 40 wings flapping as hard as they can echoes off the walls. They land in a large circle everyone facing out, eyes open, scanning every nook and every cranny of the gorge walls down here at the riverbed.

It is a massive show of force, and it doesn't go unnoticed. Three members of the lost scouting party pop out from hiding in one of the walls, Scorpia is not with them. Elated to see their people.

"How did you find us? How did you know we needed help!?" Says one of them.

Queen Meri quiets him, "Shh, it was Azore, she was able to scry, where is everyone else?"

The fairies excitement quickly turns to sorrow. "We were so hopeful when we found the river... We would watch hawks, owls, vultures, and rabbits every day follow them to their nests or burrows, most of the time they flew far to the east, we followed one once, but we saw there was just large stone mesa's that way. Likely no water, so we stopped following birds that left to go east. Then we got lucky, an Owl led us here to this gorge, its nest was hidden in the walls. We dove down and filled our jugs and drank deeply. When we turned around Bracken was missing. We thought maybe he dove in or went to take a leak, we thought nothing of it. Night falls and we still don't see Bracken, we start searching for him and in the process, Aven went missing. Now we knew something was very wrong. We backed into a circle watching waiting, and it took Prinna and Nova, but we saw it when it grabbed them and chased it. It was 15 feet tall at least and it dragged them to a cave down the river. Scorpia told us we had to charge in and save them. It knew we were coming, it grabbed every buddy but us we ran..."

Queen Meri looks him in the eye, "Did you see the creature, do you remember where it's cave is."

"Yes, it had eight glossy eyes, terrible hairy pincers that dripped with a foul substance. It's pale, corpulent body reeked of river sludge. Where the pallid skin rolled into sweaty folds long matted hair grew out."

The fairy draws the picture in the sand, none of the fairies recognize it. Even Firo, who had been on a hundred scouting runs, had never seen it.

The sun is rising in a few hours. What do you want to do?

Setup camp on the ridge it will give us sight advantage. Light fires if the thing is of the river it will likely have a natural fear of fire.

Sounds like we're dealing with an ancient evil spider, take standard spider precautions and do this >>1846180

Get the people the water they need during the day time under careful guard
>>
>>1845522
We need to be proactive about this beast, on the off chance that some of the captured fairies are alive and captured.

Did the attacks happen at night? If it's nocturnal, we should try to infiltrate it's cave during the daytime. We should set up our housing on/near an area with small holes/crevices/tunnels that bigger species can't fit in, if possible. Got to use our small size to our advantage :)
>>
>>1846180
>>1846372
>>1847492

With this news the Queen speaks up. "We shouldn't be down here, we should go up to the ridge."

Firo organizes it and starts to light a few fires along the edge. A guard is rotated once an hour giving everyone a few hours of sleep.

They question the survivors more and find out some more. The creature had two arms and two legs, it did primarily attack right at dusk but as the evening moved on it would stop. It was not from the river, it was from a cave on the wall.

The sun rises and the first run for water is made. Small teams are sent down, heavily guarded and brought back up.

It is still early morning. Your fairies have had little to no sleep in the past few days, any time they were able to take was restless.

There are still 12 fairies missing. They know where they were taken. The creature has not been seen.

What would you like to do?

So, we know where the creature's cave is... This is a huge advatage! We should stake out the entrance from atop a cliff face, so that we can warn the settlement when it is hunting. We can fly, this thing can't. I'm assuming it is human sized?

The safe thing to do would be: wait for it to go hunting, then investigate the cave + try to free any prisoners while it is out (with lookouts of course).

The crazy thing to do would be to set up an ambush or trap at the entrance and kill it then. Nets, poison (if we have it), etc.

I vote for doing the safe thing first, then the crazy thing after we've hopefully been reunited and rested for a little while.

During the day you move your camp to the cliff edge right above this creature's lair and have a rotating guard set up to constantly watch.

It is hot on top of the gorge, the sun blisters down as you watch the cave. It is dark, no movement, nothing comes in or out.

The sun sets and a coolness washes over the camp. The sun is setting earlier in the day, the summer is coming to a close, there are maybe 4 more weeks before autumn is here.

The guards watch, their eyes play tricks on them. They think they see the glint of eyes or the shifting of shadows but nothing comes out.

The moon reaches the highest point in the sky and nothing comes out. What would you like to do?

The sky shifts from a deep dark green, to a purple, to a lightning blue and is met with pinks and reds and oranges that dance along the bottoms of the clouds as dawn comes.

None of your fairies see it. All eyes are trained on the cave. The food supplies are waning. A few people are getting nervous. You assure everyone that impatience will only get more of us killed.

The day passes, a breeze is blowing through the desert this day. The gorge creates strange howling sounds as the wind moves through small caves and caverns throughout the sides. The noises are unsettling.

As night falls you finally see movement in the cave. A creature, 8 feet tall and 4 feet wide scuttles out and hugs the evening shadows. It moves erratically and disgustingly fast for its grotesque body. Fairies gasp, children cry, but luckily the wind carries their voices away from the creature. You watch as it reaches the riverbed and begins to slurp the murky water from the banks.

The creature finishes drinking from the riverbed and slips into the water. It wades out into the center and pulls up some sort of net. There are two or three fish flopping around in it.

It empties the net, and resets it taking maybe 30 minutes at most before it slinks back to its home. You can assume he will do this again within the next few nights.

Your people wait and watch the vile beast. It doesn't come out the next night, but it does the night after. You position yourselves closer to its cave.
