Welcome back to Yet Another Cultural Evolution! This time, our tribes have started evolving from tribes to nations! National identities begin forming after the debacle of the prophetic battles, giving each of the tribes a sense of destiny! Will these nations now take a harsher control over their lands, and expand their influence and culture to their neighbors, or develop technologically and militaristically to subdue all who resist?

New Mechanics/Rules:
> Culture is better defined! The new culture sheets show how you can evolve culture through traditions, holidays, legal structure, education, etc!
> Techs will take multiple years to develop depending on whether other people have already discovered it, or you have the proper resources! This means NO GUNS ON TURN 5! In fact, if you prepare to make guns or any other weapons that take a shitton of time, you better plan for the resources you have!
> Did I mention resources is a thing? No more magically having clay when theres none in the mountains, or iron when theres none in the forest! If you want resources, you need to send scouts to find them, and establish towns and colonies to keep them!
> Updated Map! New Culture Sheets!
> New Populations! Population calculations are more dependent on food production (sort of!)

Next few posts will outline the nations individually and their starting populations, buildings, and culture!

The Sky Tribe reserves its three-caste system only through the fervent worship of a powerful deity, the Sky Lord. The Sky Priests have in recent years decided that expansion is inevitable, and after receiving the Sky Lord’s graces, they are eager to send scouts to mine for materials stronger than their stone tools, and even find more uses for their invention of ‘gunpowder’…

The Plains Tribe has grown and grown in population until various tribes have splintered off. Fortunately, the new shaman and chief managed to unite the various plains tribe, and some semblance of a nation forms! While there are many bounties to be excavated from the plains, the nation only has the river clay from their main city, as well as vast chicken and horse farms. How will the former plains nomads transition to nation building?

The Lake Tribe has been through huge political shifts in recent years. The defeat of the radical Hydra King disgusted them, and as a result the former views of the old farmer upper class is extremely controversial, and fishermen and farmers are not even independent professions, every man participating in both. All citizens begin to have smaller plots of farmland as population increases, and spends more of their time in the communal fishing areas. Their knowledge of mathematics and advanced farming practices gives them the formation of a structured society, and who knows how far they may advance in the years to come!

Finally, the Island Tribe has still reserved itself on the island, and monks have repeatedly communicated with the Lake Lady to hear what progress they should make. The goddess asks her followers to spread their domain to encompass the lake and lakes even beyond their own, and the Island Tribe considers pivoting to an imperialistic approach on the shores of the lake and the recently discovered ocean…

And heres the map, and how to play!

> Every turn is 5 years
> Can make up to three moves of any type (thats right, 3!)
> Three types of moves: tech, culture, and action
> Action can be: scouting, building, warring, etc. Must roll 1d100 for scouting and warring
> Culture can change any facet of the culture sheet.
> Techs you can queue up, will be completed depending on years it takes to develop, which depends on your culture, whether the world has discovered it, your resources, etc. Let OP know what you want to research, if its simple, you can probably research multiple techs!
> 3 players to a nation, starts 1st turn now

Stop being so inconsiderate of the farmers or the tribespeople will find out what their leader is really like
>>
>>147875
>inconsiderate of the assholes that seceded
I'm all for farmer-fisherman equality, but in no way am I having more farmers in my tribe
>>
>>147879
The fishermen greatly outnumber the farmers and the people have forgotten who really founded this tribe

Farming is dying out and I will change that, whether you want me to or not
>>
>>147880
The Lake founded the tribe, not you fatasses, you have acted like assholes and don't even consist of the army
I'm done with saving your fatasses
>>
>>147884
Fact is without farming there wouldn't be enough food and the people would be dying out

Fishing isn't sustainable, you can't feed a growing population with fishing, sooner or later the fish will die out. Stop repressing the farmers
>>
>>147890
I'm not repressing the farmers, I'm putting them at their place, they need to learn to stop being assholes before they become a stable part of our culture once more

Plus, most of our food is sugarcane and fish, something that fishermen produce
>>
>>147884
farmers did
>>
>>147895
The Lake tribe didn't only consist of farmers in the beginning
Farmers were just richer because they produced more
>>
>>147892
>I'm putting them in their place

You're claiming farmers are lesser people than fishermen? The fish are going to die out if we keep focusing on fishing.

You think people will live well if they can't eat bread, tomatoes, carrots, potatoes and etc.?
>>
>>147905
>You're claiming farmers are lesser people than fishermen
Ever since they seceded from the Lake tribe and stole our hydra, it's going to take a while until they gain our trust again

And the fish aren't going to die out, the Lake Lady will make sure of that
>>
So how many people are in Island right now?

The first five years after the Necromancer's defeat, the Sky Nation turned to scout for resources. Iron ore was found in huge quantities in nearby caves, and highlanders were employed to harvest the iron! Potatoes were discovered, but there was no soil in the rugged highlands to grow them, and the lowlands of Altodomino have soil thats too frozen for healthy crops to grow! Sky nation must find more arable land to grow these new crops!

They also mandated all children to learn elk riding. This was easily implemented, as all children will live in the lowlands at least once in their life, where elk are herded.

The islanders are the first to colonize! Following the Lake Lady's call to expand, they established the town of Pompeii, population 25, and found a variety of resources that rivals the Lake Nation's! Furthermore, farming is achieved after observing lake nation techniques, and the Island Nation is able to grow all crops that the Lake Nation can grow!

It turn out, however, that only berries grow on the Island of Rome. Nevertheless, more berry farms are built and are expected to host more imported crops from the colony!

The plains nation continues to improve weapons and technologies suited for their comfortable, nomadic lifestyle. Bows are made shorter, sacrificing range for power, though of course longbows are still made. Saddles also developed for comfort when riding horses around in the plains.

The chief sent scouts out to find building material and they found a curious substance by the river! Though many were disappointed by the rivermud, the shaman is convinced that it may play a role in permanent structures...

By the late 3rd century AD, all essential elements for constructing a steam engine were known by Roman engineers: steam power (in Hero's aeolipile), the crank and connecting rod mechanism (in the Hierapolis sawmill), the cylinder and piston (in metal force pumps), non-return valves (in water pumps) and gearing (in water mills and clocks)

Damn OP, back at it again with the culture sheets

The lake nation after much debate decide that general education is mandatory for all children in order to harvest a brighter generation. A colony is also established close to the Islander colony of Pompeii.

The plough is also developed to expediate the farming process. Unfortunately, it requires large plots of land to be used effectively, and no lake members have large plots at all. Still, the technology exists and in the future, who knows how it will be used?

The Sky tribe are quick to establish a new town, Winter's Refuge, in order to harvest potatoes and wooden logs. The camp is a success, and potatoes are quick to become a staple crop for the Sky Nation!

The town of Pompeii continues to grow, now hosting two farms! The colonists begin to plant along the coast, reserving the interior land for housing structures.

Scouts were sent to find grains, and came back with soybeans! By themselves raw, they aren't very edible, but after roasting them in the fire the were found to be an excellent source of protein! Plans are made to start growing soybeans in the next five years!

Scouts were also sent to find metals, but the closest location they could find was the northern Winter Woods, and even then the islanders were not used to the cold climate of the north. Still, colonization is a possibility!

The cities were renamed after an argument with the two parties again. Scouts were sent out again to find crops and came back with long stemmed crops known as leeks! They are beginning to be planted in Ctesiphus and Arcadia, though they don't contribute to a large increase in population.

The plains tribe have a busy year! They caught up with the Lake tribe's levels of agriculture using the swarm spy knowledge to replicate artificially planting long grains by the river. However, the grains by themselves are inedible, and they don't have the knowledge to harness the carbs within!

The tribe also uses the river clay to make various forms of plates, bowls, and utensils. The slow work of ceramics takes four years to perfect, but in the end, they surpass all other tribes with their knowledge of pottery!

They are beginning to research primitive bricks, and will continue to do so next turn for at least two years (Still a slot for a tech in three years).

Sky Nation adopts the art of steel making by purifying iron and combining other metals to change the properties of the alloy. Given the rich iron deposits of Altodomino, they are able to manufacture an ample supply of steel tools used for mining, woodcutting, and arrows.

The Sky people also develop a simple arithmetic language, using a base ten system accustomed to us in the real world. They use it to count discrete quantities of elk, goats, people, and tools, evolving to a more fairer system of intranational trade.

A road is constructed between Arcadia and her colony, which at this stage is just a dirt road leveled by multiple ploughs and flattening the land.

Scouts were sent out to attempt to tame bears or other beasts, however when they tried to sing, it was clear their magic only applied to birds and not beasts! Even with the food they brought, they could attract animals to eat the food but once eaten, they quickly escaped, frightened by the singing the lakemen attempted.

The Plains Nation finish their development of bricks! They can now construct permanent residences and buildings, though still keeping in mind the norm of having the horizon and stars in view, of course.

They learn to grind their wheat grains into flour, and are on their way to creating bread, certainly a powerful food item to boost their population! Primitive bolas are also created by simply attaching wooden balls to rope, and when thrown, they can easily trap a trip over a falling animal. The implementation makes hunter life easier for the plainsmen, and in the coming years, hunters everywhere will use it regularly, greatly increasing meat input!

Turn 4!

The Lake Nation, after speaking to the birds of the forest, develop a relationship so that hawks help fishermen out with fishing. It will take a while to master, but its predicted that soon, the training with bird and human will allow for a notable increase in fishing production! Farmers also use some hawks to scare off farm pests.

They also build farms at Ctesiphus (how do you pronounce that?). There is a correlation between the time the farms were built and the number of births in the following years.

It is expected that by next turn, their population will soar due to this development (Of course, relative to the number of wheat farms).

Typical Mongolian two-stringed instrument. The body and the neck are carved from wood and the body is often covered with the leather of wild animals. The strings are wound from horsetails hair and tuned in the interval of a fourth.

The Island tribe decide to hunt and skin the local wildlife to borrow their furs for the cold climate. White fox-furs are available to all villagers, but only after five years of constant hunting.

They also learn the secrets of steel production after hearing of techniques that others, such as the Sky Nation, uses. The iron deposits from the north makes it possible to equip every citizen with steel.

An amphitheater is beginning to be constructed out of wood and stone on the Island. It will take at least a decade to construct, and will require another action next turn.

Event 1: Plague!

In all the capitals of the world, the large populations are prone to a terrible disease! The Plains and Sky Nation collectively call it the Necromancer's Curse, whereas the Lake People simply call it the Plague and the Islanders call it the Outsider's Disease, since they know for sure it didn't come from the Island!

Every main city will lose, instead of gain, population until either a cure is ready, or a resistant population is born! The number of people lost depends on how many you started with! Will you focus on a cure, or expand more into the colonies and contain the disease as much as you can?

Plague Penalties (per turn):

The Island Nation begin research for a cure, but tits clear that it will take a long time for the cure to be found, not to mention gathering the resources needed to distribute the cure to all who need it.

Those not afflicted by the plague continue to a new colony in the south! The Island Nation is quickly becoming farspread, from the frozen north to the plush, riverlands in the south.

The amphitheater is finally built! At least, it is thanks to the efforts of those still willing to work. Plays are thrown much to the amusement of the masses!

The Plains Nation do not fear the Necromancer's Curse, and think of it as a challenge that only the toughest can survive. They merrily sing and dance, inventing a two string instrument and learning to play it in to songs honoring the chief, occasionally singing about the defeat of the Necromancer as a remedy to the sickly. The Shaman's necromantic staff grows silent.

They assemble bricks into makeshift areas for permanent campfires and furnaces where they can create bread. The transition from nomadic to settled life is going smoothly.

Sky priests desperate for a cure wandered the mountains, and found the Lord of the Skies in Cloud Form, leading them towards the long awaited answer: Thistle Roots! Chewing the roots raw or boiling them was an effective method to reverse the sickness in those with beginning stages of the sickness, though it did nothing to those who were very ill and eventually died. The Sky Lord only asks from his worshippers to not share the secret of the thistle roots to other nations! The priests, ever so loyal, accepted the conditions immediately. The population is expected to grow again in the next few years.

The only animals they could find to be used for leather was more elk! A wild herd was rounded up and added to the tribe's existing herd, and leather production begins for the elder elk with no owners.

Finally, the lake nation also attempt to resolve the plague with a cure to be researched, but like the Island nation, its clear that it will take a while to find.

Also like the island nation, the Lakemen adopt the custom of regular bathing.

Mintleaf is also considered among cure options, but its mostly used as a pain reliever. Many lazy lakemen begin smoking the leaf, but on the bright side, lots of art and music is created during these 5 years.

The first thing the sky nation does after the survival of the plague was grow their population back! The second thing they did was send a scout out to search for a certain kind of chalky rock, which was found a couple miles south of their capital city. Bringing back some of the material, they were able to construct a rudimentary mortar by mixing the crushed rock with other grainy rocks and water. The mortar worked very well when stacking rocks to create an artificial wall, though it wouldn't work well with irregularly shaped stones. As a result, they decided on artificially chiseling stones, and now have the means of creating stone walls, though they would still need to settle a colony at the limestone site to actually harness its resources!

The Lake Nation quarantine the sick onto a separate island where people can observe their behavior. This ensures a lower death count in the future. They also engage in a collaborative agreement with the Island Nation to research the cure together, shelling some years off of the plague cure.

They attempt to create catapults using logs and rope. The mathematical minded found a correlation between the weight and length of wood, the size of possible projectiles, and the strength of the rope used. After the five years, they are able to construct catapults that can shoot small sized artillery, though it would require large amount of resources to construct and maintain.

Scouts were sent from the northern Island colonies to find herbs that may curb the Outsider's Disease. They found a magical vegetable with famed curing properties: garlic! Although not thistle roots, the vegetable seems to prolong the effects of the disease, but not outright cure it. At least the Islander's cuisine will have a pinch more flavor!

The plains colony scout and find the wonderful wheat that the Plains Nation use to create bread! They would still need to understand how to turn the grains into edible material, but in any case, the food source can be very powerful to grow the population once the cure subsides!

They continue the cure, working with the intelligent Lake Nation to develop one, and shell off a few years of research along the way!

Scouts are sent to find resources, but it seems all that can be used in the plains has been found. However, they remembered the chasm that their ancestors had explored and mined, and consider the riches that might be contained inside the ravine to the south.

The plains nation also upgrades their bows to be a blend of bone and wood, making them heavier so they can launch larger arrows at greater distances. Shortbows are made with tighter string so arrows can launch farther. The stables are also upgraded so that horses have makeshift shelter, as opposed to their previous post-stables they were so accustomed to.

They also develop full armor with entirely reeds, as that is currently their only material to make armor from.

They attempt to domesticate bears, but they encounter problems as there are not very many bears in the forest, and the bears they find are extremely hostile. At the end of the first year, they manage to capture one who is weaker, but they find that they need to fish a lot more to keep the bear healthy and tamed. They built a pit where the bear can reside in, but the bear still manages to drag some wandering villagers in and in five years there have been two bear related deaths. The fisher party heavily encourage to execute the bear and never try and domesticate them again.
