I'd like to see some more characters with a bit more naivete. Too many characters are either fully developed, never make mistakes adults or snarky teens with a wicked sense of humor.

I don't get leading choices in quests (where you give players an option but when they pick a "wrong" one you explain to them why its wrong and what the right one is). If you're just going to spoonfeed your players the correct answer to a situation, why even bother giving them the opportunity to vote. It's bizarre.
>>
>>1176462
The only time I've really had to do this is in the situations of write-ins, where some outside knowledge the players couldn't possibly know about would screw them over.

Sometimes it's good to just let it happen and have things play out naturally, but others, I'd hate to see everyone's time get wasted over something totally preventable. As for what you're saying though, yes, that does seem quite silly. The "wrong" option shouldn't even be an option if there's no point picking it.

>>
>>1174712
I've been considering on doing a quest based on the Green Antarctica alternate history, but since one of the main grabbing points of the setting is the alien and most of the time mind-numbingly evil culture of the native Antarcticans, so I think that a quest plaing as James Cook or a group sent to rescue the poor sod after the natives captured him.

>desu what even is this magical girl stuf
It's like Sailor Moon or Card Captor Sakura.
I'm attracted to settings where the tone is almost assumed to be light unless it's some kind of grimdarkedge thing.
>>
It's a shame. I wanted to run a magical girl type quest, but then I found out it's hated.

Gotta run what Anon wants, after all.
>>
>>1176803
I think it's hated because of how overdone it is and not because Anon hates it.
It's like the potato chips of quest ideas. It's something you binge on that's cheap and quick to make and not something that is lovingly crafted and executed by explaining the story and premise without relying on tropes.

I don't really care though, I still keep having ideas for them.
>>
Okay, so I'm thinking about doing a quest about Anon waking up in the world of For Honor, but the different faction's Hero classes are all Magical Girl Squads.

Whaddya think, /qst/?
>>
>>1176866
>Isekai Magical Girl fanfic
Sure why not?
>>
>>1176795
>>1176803
First of all, "unless" implies that the smaller fraction is grimdarkedge. At this point, there are as many grim magical girl titles as there are not. Besides, quite a few of them are trying to be seinen anyway, which is often not light.

Second of all, magical girl quests are popular. That's WHY they're hated. Same with fanfic, it's either the same tired cliches recycled, or a niche thing that has a closed community that rarely shows its face on qtg. Usually it's both, with people saying it gets better 20 THREADS LATER.

>>1176866
I think you're going to need some REALLY good combat. Do you know what Action Chain is?

Pretty great, right?
>>
>>1176947
whatever, sure.

But that ASSUMES that you can port over For Honor's combat in quest form.

>>
>>1176963
....dude. You seem to be misunderstanding something. I've never been to /v/, and I have nothing against the game.

My doubts stem from your ability to make combat in a quest entertaining. What exactly about the quest is going to be For Honor? The controls? The spectacle? Predicting enemy action? What do you identify as feeling like For Honor, and how much of it are you bringing into quest form?

Because as you might guess, For Honor doesn't really use dice. You are certainly going to abstract mechanics to approximate the feeling, but WHAT are you going to prioritize?
>>
>>1176963
Hatred doesn't even begin to describe how I feel towards you, WZulEM4K. Ddrill this into your fucking skull. You are filth. Your family and friends (as if you'll ever have friends) could die, your house could burn to the ground, everything that was valuable to you could have been destroyed, you could die in the most horrific and gruesome way, and you still wouldn't have suffered enough. If you were toilet paper, I wouldn't even wipe my ass on you because my ass alone is far better a person than you will ever be.If you ever show your face here again (and let's face it, you'll be back), I will not rest until you are banned from every board your worthless mind has decided to stumble upon and you will not only leave this website for good, but you leave this life. If there are any newfags that are reading this, take WZulEM4K as an example on how NOT to be a QM. Even the most cancerous tripfags are above him on an astronomical level. There is absolutely nothing good to say about you. I can only hope that someday, someone decides to kill you and rape your lifeless body. Across the street for attention, down the river for results. We all know that you're going to pick across the street like the pathetic scum of the earth you are. You deserve nothing good in life, and I hope that you do the earth a favor and off yourself.

-Older quest idea taken from a video game where you're a magical girl in the 30's trying to fight Cthulhu cultists and their crazy inventions (Pic related is the star of that)
-Redux of an old quest someone gave me permission to do again.
-A Nanoha spinoff quest.
>>
>>1177198
the pic is cute but I'm not sure about 'crazy inventions' and 'Cthulhu cultists' in the same game and having a consistent tone. if you pull it off it'd be good but it'd be hard and you'd only have one shot

nanoha spinoff mite b kool but probably only if you stay away from canon cast and basically do your own thing in the setting

Well, to give an example from the game. One level has you fight gangsters in a model-T, and the next level has you fight a sci-fi tank.
'consistent' isn't really the right word to describe it, but that's probably why I never got around to doing anything with it.

>nanoha spinoff mite b kool but probably only if you stay away from canon cast and basically do your own thing in the setting
This is what I was planning, but I wanted some parts of the cast to be around somewhere in the distant background, maybe to eventually enter at some point. Which may spell poison to the whole idea if I can't make it work right.

Would anyone here be interested in a quest where you're the captain of an armed trawler in not-WWI? Setting is a stormy archipelago that warring powers only care about because floating wrecks from great battles are carried by the currents to smash against the islands. It'd feature navigating by a map, interacting with your crew, learning about the setting through a salty old local, exploring wrecks and ruins from older empires, scrapping said wrecks and ruins, small-scale naval combat, and the moral dilemmas of fighting over some wretched rocks that nobody important really cares about.

>You really think that if I took my trip off then people wouldn't have started meming at me?

Yes. If you went into this qtg as anon with a fresh ID no one would have gave you shit.

>So give me a reason why I shouldn't just shit on this general
You're not shitting on anything. You're responding to such low quality and effort bait that you are the one making a fool out of yourself.
>>
>>1178885
>Even now if I took it off you'd all say, oh well he's already shitposted a bunch, clearly mini has nothing of value to say.

You do understand that if you stopped posting with your trip on you would be anonymous, right?

I mean obviously for this thread you've already spoiled your ID with your continued insisting to behave in a manner that can only be described as the online equivalent of shitting your pants and running through Walmart screaming "I'm a big boy! I'm a big boy and I made a big poo-poo!" Sure, you ARE in the right place for that kind of behavior, but it's still a traumatizing experience for anyone unfortunate enough to witness it.

The point is, you're a piece of shit and your only chance of ever having anything resembling an actual conversation with an actual person is to conceal that fact to the best of your ability. Drop your trip.
>>
>>1178967
True. I'll do that next thread. My point is that it doesn't matter what a fool I make of myself, because if I ever mention the quest I run I'd get some hate.

>>1178975
You're misunderstanding my point a little bit. My problem isn't necessarily that you guys have a problem with me, I couldn't care less. It's just I've seen you shit on people time and time again for no reason really. There aren't that many of us here.

Even the OP post is a jab at an anon who was making a very good point. Original content is just a meme, because you act like it make something automatically better because someone put more effort into it.

How about we judge things based on the writing?
>>
>>1178984
>because if I ever mention the quest I run I'd get some hate.

Shinobi doesn't get hate when it's mentioned outside of the small inconsequential:
>Naruto fanfic
comment that is easily ignored.

The reason that you get and will continue to get hate is how you conducted yourself last thread and this one. First impressions are important and no one even knew you existed until last thread.
>>
>>1178994
It's not so easily ignored when people are spamming

>anime
>fixfic
>fanfic

ect. at every chance they get. You claim all these things are terrible, but when it comes to the chance to offer legitimate criticism you don't take it. (I managed to get some after sticking around through your shitty memes for a bit, but really most people aren't going to do that.)

I just don't get why you go out of your way to be butthurt about what constitutes half the board. In the meta thread, I saw people actively saying it's the player's fault that people don't like original content.

That's sort of what frustrated me. People blaming the players for what they like instead of resolving to be better at what they write. That's downright cancerous. I don't care if you guys hate me, I just think everyone deserves fair treatment. Not me at this point clearly, but holy fuck you are delusional if you think 3-4 people spewing shit at a single person asking for criticism is going to make anyone actually listen to you.

I get some QM's are just downright stubborn and refuse advice, but if you can't offer fair, unbiased criticism free of your feelings on the subject, I don't think you should be offering any criticism at all.
>>
>>1179024
My argument had nothing to do with your fanfic vs OC delusions you keep bringing up.

My point is simple: Act like a cunt, get treated like a cunt. Specially a Holier Than Thou cunt. It has nothing to do with running a fanfic or an OC.
>>
>>1179050
How it is a delusion when it's a frequent topic of conversation?

One side, the side in this general, just seems intent on ignoring any and all points brought up by the other side. It's a circle jerk in here. I keep bringing it up because that's the whole reason I'm acting like a cunt: because you people were cunts in the first place. You want me (and everyone) to treat you guys like you're some authority on questing, which is laughable.

This whole thread is dedicated to a holier than thou attitude. So do you want to address my points, are you going to continue to give me reason to waste your time?
>>

Dude get off your fucking high horse. People don't have to agree with you, and just because most people don't doesn't mean that it's an echo chamber. Nobody wants to have a serious conversation with you because you keep playing the victim card whenever you're not trying to be some wannabe Planefag. We aren't fucking obligated to agree with you.
>>
>>1179086
I don't even know what Planefag means.

No, you're not obligated to agree with me specifically, but you should at least be obligated to judge quests for what they are instead of what they're not.

That's just stupid. You might as well not even say anything at all if you're just gonna shitpost at fellow QM's.

When will you understand that it's not an echo chamber because of how you treat me, but because of the reactionary, sensitive nature of this thread? Calm yourselves.

Good thing most people aren't shitting on your quest itself. It was like one autist in the previous thread. The reason why people don't like you is because you automatically assume that everyone is attacking you because you run a fanfic quest. People dislike you because you're annoying as hell. You haven't added anything meaningful to the thread.

Like I said, this place isn't an echo chamber, you just can't stand when people don't like you. Either grow some thicker skin or fuck off to your own thread, people are tired of seeing your long-ass posts where you continually play the victim card and spout nonsense.

And you say we're reactionary. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

Look, it's a very vocal minority that actually care whether a quest is OC or fanfic. Most people here couldn't care less what setting a quest is in as long as the writing is good. Hell, some of the most popular quests have been fanfic. As a QM whose quest is OC, I completely believe that it doesn't matter whether a setting is fanfic or not. Cool your jets and quit being such a cunt. Your demeanor is the primary reason why people are telling you to fuck off, despite your insistence otherwise.

Now either calm down or fuck off.

Yo G's I'm thinking of setting up a Danganronpa quest. I feel like a lot of the elements of that series would carry over to this format quite well considering its linear story events but fluid relationship and conversational elements.

Would anybody have any interest in something like this at all?

Any advice on making sure it's not ultra-faggy fanfic level stupidity?

Any advice on constructing murder mystery?

I'm currently in the planning phase of a high fantasy quest.
But I'll probably only do it after I'm done with my currently running one.

So let's discuss this topic a bit:

>How much is ''too much''?
And let me elaborate on this.
There are certainly certain things in fantasy that are timeless and should be included but at what point does it become ''Just another elves and dwarves'' / Tolkien rip-off.

And in reverse:
what constitutes as trying too hard to deviate from the norms?

I have a pretty clear image already but it's still interesting to discuss this

Forgive the shitty artwork.

I've done a few quick sketches for some potential characters. One thing I've noticed from looking at other threads and how they were successful and how they failed:

Characters are more favored when they aren't wacky and don't rely on a talent or reactionary bullshit. Even more so if they players can just talk to them and actually get to know them. And even more so if they can see how the characters interact with the world and eachother without relentless exposition. Show don't tell I guess.

Anyway I tried to incorporate that philosophy into their design a bit. Any notes?

I think cartoony styles work better for quests, because they speed up the drawing process, which allows for faster updates.

>At the end of the day, /qst/ is not the place for smut quests.

What is the place for smut quests then? Why do the mods want questing to die? What did questers ever do to you? Why create a quarantine board for a medium that isn't a big deal, and then also cordon off another piece of that medium? Questing is already starved for players and QMs. There's no visibility. /qst/ - Quests gives whatever few random passerby there might be no indication of what to expect from things on the board. Instead of putting your hands over your ears and saying "I'm not a rapist I swear", why not try and actually do sometihng to fix questing.

Maybe if you read the rules, you'd see that /qst/ isn't for smut quests, and that means your opinion on the matter isn't up for discussion.

Mods probably don't CARE about questing, since they have bigger concerns. Content for questing and such isn't a stable thing, it comes and goes.

If you want a good quest, then MAKE ONE. Don't bitch and whine because your blistered ass isn't being catered to.
>>
>>1179860
On average males are going to be slightly taller than most of the female characters, yes.

Ideally I'll avoid drawing for the most part. I just thought it best to have at least some visual accompaniment considering the source material. Especially in regards to any potential murder scenes, since visually categorizing the evidence gives players the chance to find and compile the evidence themselves rather than simply be handed a list of every piece needed to put the puzzle together.
>>
>>1180007
>oy goy I made the rule no smut quests so why would you want smut quests?

I'm saying the rule is stupid. You're already killing questing, at least kill it a little less.

>Mods probably don't CARE

>If I was a rapist, I wouldn't care that I raped people
>b-but I'm also not a rapist, baka

>run a good quest :^)

Again, the problem is exposure. Someone could run a good quest and it wouldn't matter. The newly deceased Banished Quest had a 3rd of the players that it had on /tg/, and that's still five times more than the most popular quests currently running. Even if some god of writing somehow creates a quest that appeals to all the people on /qst/, they still will get fewer players than a reasonably popular quest from back in the heyday of questing because nobody else comes to /qst/. That number is only going down and it's your fault.
>>
>>1180042

>>
>>1179903
What software do you use for mapping?
>>
>>1180042
I don't mean to interrupt, and I might be a little wrong because I'm still bitter as fuck about it: but questing was already on its way out when /qst/ was made. I think even a quest written by the best writer ever on /tg/ today would have gotten less exposure than the same quest written on /tg/ four years ago because the population of people playing was declining. It was one of the reasons /qst/ was a shit idea for a new board.
Part of the reason why this was is because of /tg/ adopting the "General" culture and fewer people browsing /tg/ for things that might be tangential to what they liked. Today, most of the population of /tg/ is walled off in general threads and only a few people browse the front page for new threads.

I would love to return to the heyday of questing, but I don't see that happening on this website ever again. Even if the split never happened.
>>
>>1180066
>Since when did I deny they existed?

>If you want a good quest, then MAKE ONE
>/qst/ isn't for smut quests, and that means your opinion on the matter isn't up for discussion.

If you know there are problems, then why do you advise people to just bend over and accept them rather than actually trying to do something? Stating that the problem is that there isn't a good quest in response to what I is explicitly denying that the exposure problem with /qst/ isn't a thing. Saying "It's the rule goy just live under it" invalidates something as a valid complaint, yet everyone who isn't retarded can agree unequivocally that text can't be NSFW.

Now that you've admitted that the problems exist, you can stop fellating the mods and their shitty decisions. Please.

Would a skirmish with each player taking the place of a ship be better or worse than a space-mercenary/salvage quest where all the players collaborate on how handle the control of a small region of space?

The former would see lots of individual customization, while the latter would be lots of customizing various ships, sending them on patrols along designated routes, and then piecing together a response based off of their findings.

But shit like that is a repeat occurrence in his quests. Hell he tried to hide himself under a different trip multiple times because people were still sore about him killing his MC in a spiteful fashion in his previous Avatar quest he ran.
>>
Fate/Extra's combat system is a lot like a modified combat chain, right?

How do you justify or explain how 1 or 2 of the moves of an unknown enemy are revealed to the players? (boss phase changes/transformations and hidden moves/finishers notwithstanding?)
>>
>>1181490
No, even that isn't an excuse anymore. If you choose to be ignorant of SOM it's your own fault. Learn your QMs
>>
>>1181557
pretty sure I mentioned this last thread, but:

>MC has limited precognition skills. Either it gets severely more vague against multiple enemies/variables, or it only ever works on one target at a time.
>Knowing each others moves is just something that happens from sheer knowledge/experience. The enemy also knows a few of your moves narratively, which is why they're always smug when they counter you and why it's normal when you counter them.
>>

Oh nice. I didn't realise it was off hiatus again. Thanks!

>Fate/Extra's combat system is a lot like a modified combat chain, right?

Not quite. It's just RPS with skills.
>>
>>1181490

Don't forget too that time in his first DBZ quest that the players ended up getting railroaded into killing a waifu no one wanted to see die and got so ass-blasted that SOM straight-up reset time & space to right before that just to calmost everybody down.
>>
>>1181684
Support (master's) skills and item usage fall outside the RPS cycle if I recall. Or that support skills were free actions between turns?

Items were done between the 6 rounds of clashes.
>>
>>1181747
Skills will override the RPS action in clashes. Items are used at the start of the round.

Fanfiction. That's why.

Didn't you know? Fanfiction is much harder to write and infinitely more creative than original content. Why, anyone could sit down and write a setting that doesn't sound like something that's already been created, and also make it interesting enough for people to follow. No, the real challenge is riding on the coattails of an established setting and possibly adding some things so the Sue/Stu MC gets all the glory.

>>
>>1182535
It sounds interesting, but you might (potentially) run into a "tug of war" situation where people will end up reversing things and essentially going nowhere. This could be due to trolling, Anons changing their minds, or just different Anons participating who legitimately want something different.

Although, I could just be being paranoid. Again, it sounds like a very interesting idea. I've wanted to run a quest where you form a team consisting of you and two monsters, who gain subtle changes over the course of the journey, but essentially talked myself out of it due to the afformentioned reason. Don't let me talk you out of it though; I just happen to be very weak willed when it comes to some things.

Oh, I'd at least make it difficult to go back, to avoid needless errands needing to be made, depending on the "route" of the evolution.

Each would have "tiers", so to speak, each ranging in complexity, and each time anons changed to a different form, then attempting to go back, the criteria woukd increase in difficulty.

(Though starting instruments may offere different paths, depending on which one you choose.)

And some choices will actually have increased difficulty in changing.

>>
>>1182861
It sounds like it would be a lot of book-keeping on your end, but some QMs like to do that sort of thing. If I'm interpreting this right, the system would have quite a bit of depth to it.
I don't think I've seen a quest with an upgrade system quite like that, though I admit I've only read a few.

I'd be down to start it, but my schedule isn't fixed and I work as a wageslave manager. Hopefully soon, I can get this all sorted out.

I also have several pages of notes and charts on how to progress, but I've intentionally left them vague so I can be flexible.

I can say this though, there will be at least 4 initial choices to make, and 5 choices between what you start out with.

Brass, String, and Woodwind will be the main options. (Depending on the starting region, and main attributes you anons pick, there will be others.)

Secondary instrumental families will also be avaliable, but their options aren't as readily presented as the main three...

This will likely take place in a post-apocalyptic fantasy world.

If anybody wants, I can reveal which fantasy races are primarily attributed to what instruments, but I'll limit the sneak peaks to 3 choices.
>>
>>1183004
I'd like to hear about the fantasy race instrument stuff.
>>
I think it'll devolve into a mess, personally, and that any change of instrument should be a narrative event rather than a gameplay one

>do you really think anon players from 4chan can play that very well?

Let me tell you a story, anon. I will preface it by saying that not only do I believe you, but I am part of the living proof what you said is true.

So sometime last year I picked up this quest, where the QM had us playing some wannabe-diplomancer brat who had been isolated from most of the world as part of the plot. They're socially stunted, no two ways about it, and the only thing they've got going for them is this near autistic talent at manipulation and reading body language.

Fine, cool, whatever. We got what we needed, surely we can improvise the rest, right? Jesus christ, god, fuck. No. No we could not. Things started simple enough but then the shit we did or said started coming back to bite us in the ass. We're trying to make friends and allies at a quick clip because we're up to our brows in politics and world events and games being played we don't know the half of, and all we're managing to do is eventually piss off everyone - Particularly, one person we really NEED to be our friend is the one least keen on taking any of our shit.

So things keep up like this and the road is not fucking pretty. Anons are saying the wrong shit, to the wrong people, and forgetting things at the worst possible moments, and when something blows up in our face, it's always something really goddamn simple and self explanatory that we just completely screwed up. We're making enemies of really stand up, legit guys just because they're not having our bullshit. We're yelling at children because we've covered every ulterior motive except 'lets be friends'. We're getting our asses nearly killed by our own allies because for the longest time we couldn't figure out how to treat them as people instead of things to use, and we're hitting goddamn brick walls when some of them are calling us out on it, too.

I've seen what happens when anons are given unrestricted control over social queues, and it hurts. It fucking hurts, man. It hurts me, it hurts the other guys playing, I swear to god we've made the QM cry at least once at how far into Shit's Fucked we've managed to go. It's taken us like a year to make a single goddamn friend, a real one, and we almost fucked that up too.

But let me tell you, anon. Let me tell you right now. Making that friend made me feel things. If, on the extremely unlikely event that I, and the rest of my bumbling anonbros, can somehow manage anything approaching romance in this quest, it will straight up bring me to tears. Doesn't matter how it turns out, hell I know we're gonna screw it up, but just that it happened. That's enough, man. I will raise my flagon, and I will call to my anonbrothers, and we will cheer.
>>
>>1183358
anon, there's shitposting, and then there's going too far.
>>
>>1183368
tl;dr
>>
>>1183385
tl;dr - I've seen what happens when anons try to do social things without training wheels. It's not pretty.

It can be rewarding, though.
>>
>>1183404
Sorry I was being an ass. I did actually read it.

Sounded rough for everyone.
>>
>>1183368
It wasn't the same for me in a different quest. It didn't feel rewarding at all when friends were actually made, I got the most enjoyment out of the choices that I was able to wrangle a majority out of because the rest of them were too afraid to vote.

And that's not healthy for a quest.

I'm really curious why people want to keep running magical girl quests. Is it so you can play a lesbian little girl? Because I don't think I've seen any magical girls quest heroines who were heterosexuals, let alone spending most of their time mooning over the dreamy boys in the class.

Like, JQOP has this weird fetish for magical girls as love interests, but it's because they have the whole uber-feminine thing that shows up in his quests. Not a single butch or tomboy in any of his games, even the 'fierce' girl gets all weepy over boys.
>>
>>1184056

The only problem with your argument is that you assume this is the case only in magical girl quests.

I'd wager that every female protag that was in a quest ended up a lesbian due to one simple fact:

The average quest player is male and therefore wouldn't want a male dicking their player character.
>>
>>1184059

Be careful. Some yurifags would not like your "totality" language.

Some FeMCs are straight.
>>
>>1184060
I did say it's only a wager.
So it's possible that there are hetero female MCs but then you'd have to show me examples.

In other words: Pics or it didn't happen.

Hellborn Quest

Tuffle Quest

>>
>>1184065
Very well, I accept defeat.

But still, you can't deny that the majority of female MCs end up being gay
>>
>>1184059

Like, I wouldn't mind a magical girl quest if it was REALLY in-theme. The problem is that /tg/ only really plays one stereotype, the man-in-woman's body who is hot-blooded, who punches everyone, and is always straight-talking.

If you've ever seen a magical girl show, you know they're mostly the opposite. Newer shows tend to have a lot more yuri teasing, like Symphogear which basically has no relevant men, but they're a symptom rather than representative of the whole.

I'm pretty sure /tg/ doesn't want to get all teary-eyed when sempai fails to notice them, or spend a lot of time talking about boys. That's sort of integral to the experience, like Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne or Fancy Lala. Even Shadow Lady had a male love interest.
>>
>>1184067
Huh...

I'm still certain there is an audience for that, even if it's smaller than the other crowd.
After all you wouldn't argue for it if you didn't want something like that.

So I'd say it's better to condition your players so they act a certain way.
Like subtly punishing them for acting ''manly'' by having most boys avoid the MC like the plague and the girls rolling their eyes at her.
Nothing serious, or too obvious but enough to get their attention.
After they get in character it's a lot easier to do shit like that.

For example: I pretty much made all of my players fucking paranoid by killing off characters at the very beginning of the quest for a variety of reasons.

Now I've given them literal absolute power and guess what? They don't fucking dare to use it.
>>
Would an ultra feminine protagonist be a good fit for a horror quest?

I want to encourage them to think not fight, and being a Japanese schoolgirl with a medical condition might be the way to do it.

Dark settings are so easy to accomplish.

They just require a level of consistency people underestimate, if you're going dark places thematically, events need to always feel influenced by that darkness. - I;e if you're running a quest where the character is doing despicable shit all the time regardless of morality, start showing how jaded and fucked up it's making them. Start throwing 'normie' situations at them and then trigger their PTSD from being a fucking psychopath 24/7.

Tldr- Point being if you want to stick your epeen into grimdark, go balls deep or run away.
>>
>>1184286
Roight.

That's not really what I'm after but the jaded thing really is appropriate.
How about the character just barely noticing it when people around him are torn to shreds?

Do you think that'd accomplish the same effect?
>>
>>1184296
That's exactly what I mean. Showing how it fucks with the PC is important
>>
>>1184300
Yeah I've been doing that for a while now.
My players told me I can pull off depression, dread, fear and anger just fine.
So I have the basics covered.

I'll just have to amp it up to 11.

But do you think it to be appropriate to have ''normies'' around the MC to juxtapose him?
>>
>>1184066
Actually I can and will. Back on /tg/ EVERY TIME it came up, less than half were lesbian if you included the ones who never had romance in their quest. Otherwise it was maybe 50/50 at the best of times and always leaning towards straight FeMCs.

I know it's how you write your turd of a quest, but try talking out your ass less.

Don't if you don't want to. It's simple.

There can be sfw quests on Anonkun. Smut is not obligatory and you can literally tag your quest as having no smut.

If you're worried about drawing readers you don't really have to. As someone who has somewhere between 50-70+ at most I get like 15-20 votes on average.

Smut is not as much as a draw and fanfiction is barely one as well. What really matters is your presentation, themes, and writing. Also your capacity to shit post but that's another matter altogether

I only write smut to either fuck with people, my own entertainment, just because, and or for practice. Also because I want to make money off of it because goddamn stupid flash based text game maker making thousands and shit

Where was I?
Oh yeah.

Don't fall for the Akun is only for the Smut meme

You'll actually have more players if you have an easy to read layout, an easy way of communicating the locations of past threads in your main post, a pop culture theme, a consistent or frequent session schedule, and a writing style that's fun or interesting to read, but a lot of the player's here also want to push romance and smut. You can, however, attract the players who aren't here for that by not doing that. Not everyone wants to jack off to their adventures.

Smut is not the biggest draw. It's certainly one of the easiest but not the biggest. That'd be consistency and your writing. There are things worst than badly written smut but it's pretty low

On Akun, imo, you're honestly guaranteed Atleast 5-10 readers at the start. More depending on your tags, image, and description

Lemme tell you the story of Valen Quest. We have the Awoo. The fiery fallen princess. The childhood friend Maid. The precocious pubescent priestess. The waif with hidden depths we nursed back to health and hope. The sophisticated superior Aunt.

Hahaha ha. There is no waifu here. There is no yuri. There is only struggle and all to often failure.

There's almost no dice. It's all narrative, and while options are available write in actions are almost always taken.

Riz writes beautifully. His characters have their own personality and goals and views of the MC and the setting. The "best" choice is also usually discernable. In fact when you've previously been given the info you need he prompts you with "Am I forgetting something?"

And we have. Oh we have. Failure is even worse without dice because we know it's our fault. Success does happen, but it's as often by sheer frustrated luck as clever planning.

It's honestly probably the best written quest. I've never felt so invested.

Please, join us in our struggle to not let everyone down. There are smiles we don't know how to protect.

Just be sure to read the archives. Read the pastbin first actually, then the archives, and take notes. Because we could really use some help with the forgetting.

QM curse. Power creep went out of control and the setting sprawled out way too much.

Fights would take 2-3 threads. MC would basically curbstomp anything less than big bads or armies.

Erratic powerset resulted in way too much micromanagement.

And then there would be 4-5 fluff threads.

I feel it just outgrew the original framework which couldn't handle the power levels, and the main quest got bogged down in grinding and side quests.

Really could have used a time skip to set everything on the same level again. Consolidate Sierras powers and streamline their use. Organize some better paced conflict and resolve the massive amount of side plots. Get more clearly defined goals and have the way to big list of side characters do things "off screen" instead of only having things happen when Sierra was involved.

Something like how H&D scaled up the kinds of decisions the main character made.

>>
>>1188603
I don't think that's true. /qst/ is full of people who think they're clever for finding the second in command more intriguing than the captain, hypernerds that would love to be the machine guy and that peculiar brand of special snowflake that picks uncommon things that are uncommonly picked because they're mundane, not because they're overly exotic.
>>
>>1188598
Congratulations on completing!

When are you starting your next quest since we both know you're here forever?
>>
>>1188603
Would that still be the case if the single character vessels are both weaker and cannot benefit from certain bonuses?

The rough plan, as an example, is for the gunnery officer to roll for accuracy. If he rolls well, he confers a bonus on the damage chart. If you're the gunner and also the navigations officer, though, you're too busy multitasking to carefully guide shots to specific portions of your target, so you'd just hit and deal regular damage.

No one else really. I'm just incredibly impressionable, an idiot, and a hack.

I started my first quest on that whole "When you write it." Statement. So if I'm reading a quest and something happens that I don't like or would have happened d8fferently or something bores me I'd start thinking how would I donly this if I ran a quest like this.

I also don't like reading quests that are in the same vein/genre as mine because I don't want to copy anything. You'd think that I'd read them to avoid that but I'd most likely end up going out of my way to separate the two or nicking an event and changing it like a hack. One of the reasons I never read past thread 10? 12? Or Homeless Mutant

Also the reason why I ran a Half Dragon Knight Mercenary thing one shot at a point. RIP Aspie

Pitch: A quest that is a parody of all the ridiculous sports manga I keep seeing and occasionally reading.

I was thinking a sports quest revolving around 90's skateboarding taken to absurd extremes and concepts bordering on supernatural.

Several gimmicks I've thought of so far include a skateboarder who can molt his skin at-will to decrease drag on downslopes. Or a roller blader who dislocates his ankles to lay down parallel with the ground to luge through speedskating races.

The basic gist of it is that the MC of all of these sports manga always operate on pure talent and expertise while everyone around him is some kind of grotesque freak specifically bred for this one purpose in life. So it's more of a story of making stranger and more complex grotesque freaks than about the sport itself.

What are your thoughts? Do you think this premise could carry a quest?

New QM here, how would you implement an NPC party member who's just really, really bad at a lot of stuff, whether being extremely sheltered or by being given a silver platter all the time, but they legitimately want to put the time and effort to help out without making them seem too annoying?
>>
>>1191980
Have him take pictures and selfies all the time.
>>
>>1191980
Make them cute and make a lot of their failures follow a "No, but..." pattern so them being there is actually helping just not in the way they ever intend. If they really are useless why are they there?
>>
>>1191980
All failure rolls by the players are forced onto that NPC messing up. The players will feel less like that NPC is the failure.

NPC is noticeably staying up late to plan things out/study.
>>
>>1191980
Make the players relate to the character's plight, while giving both hints of the character's potential skill, and overt overtures of the character's loyalty and determination to try their best to help.

Also good personality goes a long way, and players will be more than willing to keep around a totally useless moron if they are fun to interact with, and in some cases even hoard them away from danger and avoid using their skills for fear of them coming to harm.

Find a middle ground, a support character whose skills don't require them to be in harm's way, like that hacker dude that always talks to you over the radio in video games, or a political schmoozer who helps the MC out while letting the players crash in his mansion/embassy/space station, or a loyal butler who offers medical care and maintains the equipment and base while offering witty puns and entertaining banter.

As for their early stage incompetence, make their incompetence only cause themselves to suffer, and avoid having them ruin situations for the MC unless using the method mentioned by >>1192004
Who has a great point.

>Mills Quest

First girl is a sheep. Gets left behind for human wimminz.

I have a question about a combat system idea I had for a quest.

Instead of having a weapon selection which straight-up rates weapons based on which is good/better/best. I was thinking of having different rolling 'categories' for each weapon.

Each weapon would have its own statistical distribution, with how much damage it deals depending on the roll's standard deviation from the mean.

Is this a good idea, or am I obfuscating what is otherwise a rather cut-and-dry question of 'which is better' behind a wall of statistical nonsense?
>>
>>1193046
Does this make any sense or did I just make a whole bunch of words?
>>
>>1193046
this sounds like a lot of bookeeping

>>1193182
but this is ALSO slightly true. Gonna need an example.
>>
>>1193046
Here's a pro tip: Streamline your mechanics for quests.

You may want some obtuse complexity now while it's in the planning stage, but trust me 'keep it simple stupid' will help in the long run.

If the players never see the mechanics, it's usually a little better because then they don't have to concern themselves with gaming the system. But if that's what you want, that's another matter entirely, and many players do like that sort of thing.
>>
>>1193198
I made an example weapon, and I realized something:

>>1193216
>>1193248

I might want to do this, instead. My original goal was to allow players to customize, but it would be very easy to exploit.
>>
Rolled 20 (1d100)

>>1193198
You know what, I made an example weapon so I may as well tell you what my idea was:

It was to have each weapon have unique hit properties which would then fall on a scale of 0 to 100 where each 'section' depending on the deviation pertained to that unique hit property. This may sound even more jumbled than the last time I tried to explain it.

So for instance:

0-10: Miss
10-40: Poor damage
40-60: Fair Damage
60-90: Good damage
90-100: Crit

Or, for instance, let's say you have this weapon:

0-40: Poor damage
40-100: Fair damage

This one has no miss, but cannot do any more than just 'fair damage'.

Or, for instance, a big-risk-big-rewards style of weapon:

0-20: Crit Fail
20-50: Miss
50-80: Poor Damage
80-100: Crit success.

That would be a real shitposters tool.

This could even extend to unique properties of that weapon.

0-20 Miss
20-60 Good damage
60-80 Unique Attack 1
80-100 Unique Attack 2

That was my idea, at least.

Too much paperwork, too confusing, too easily gamed, or what do you think? Let's see how I would do on the third weapon, for instance.
>>
>>1193318
Good in the background, but not so good for, say, a shopping arc where people argue about which weapon to pick.

You're better off with text descriptions player-side, and even then there's not a lot of good reasons to spend whole decision points on what weapon/s to use/bring.
>>
>>1193327
I see, so it's something that would be good to have as an addendum to a weapon, but not so all the players can see the nuts and bolts

Sounds good, I'll just do that.

So instead of describing it with numbers, I would say "This weapon has the unique property of never missing, despite being sub-par."

Or "This is a good all-around weapon, many veterans have conquered nations using something very similar to this."
>>
>>1193338
A bit fluffier.

A sub-par weapon, it nonetheless manages to stick against any target, even polished plate. The design is shoddy and worn away, but there looks to be a squid motif and southern inscription.

Many veterans have conquered nations with the [weapon]. This is not that weapon, but is similarly designed to be good in most situations. It has slowly been tarnishing though, maybe you have the wrong oil for the job?

Not long ago I ran the first and only episode of a Neolithic tribal quest. It was part roleplaying and part civ - mostly civ, managing a growing tribe.

Was thinking of brinrging that back this weekend for a prolonged run and a new kind of mechanical system behind it. Would people be interested?

>Danganronpa has an enormous amount of Japanese culture involved
Yeah I mean by way of connotation, but the way that the series constructs its characters (the most Japanese-culturally significant part of the entire franchise) is really contrary to what the majority of /qst/ users want from a character. The entire reason I made the decision to host it in a more western environment was so that the minority of people who cared about the cultural significance of the differences between eastern and western character development styles wouldn't feel like the subject was being misrepresented by forcing western styles on eastern characters. For most I doubt that would hinder their enjoyment, although if an individual prefers eastern style characters then that's their prerogative. But at the very least I won't be betraying those conventions, merely using different cultural conventions entirely, something that I believe even the most devout of Japanese culture enthusiasts can appreciate.

>if you liked the idea, you should've just called it something else.
I thought about that in all honesty, but when it came down to it I think that would alienate more people than admitting its origins.

"you-and-15-other-people-are-trapped-and-forced-to-participate-in-a-game-where-the-only-promise-of-escape-is-by-means-of-getting-away-with-murder.-If-someone-is-murdered,-you must-cooperate-to-investigate-the-murder-and-find-the-culprit,-otherwise-you-all-die-and-the-culprit-goes-free quest" is quite a specific, and people would already know exactly what it was derivative of. It doesn't solve the core issue that you brought up that people who don't like weebshit will be turned off from it. I think that's a legitimate concern but I don't think there's any way to solve that other than shift the foundations, and make it something new. Although I could simply be flat wrong about the title thing. I don't plan on running it for another 2-3 months, so there's a lot of time for discussion.

What it boils down to I think is that if I want to make it this way, I should simply try to write it the best way possible with the best preparations. If people like it, they'll like it and more players will join based on merit, and if they don't, they don't, no harm done.

Be careful what you wish for, I saw one quest review that was over 4000 words of pure, undiluted hate calmly and analytically laid out.

The review was so thorough in its destruction that the quest died.

What quest?

I justify liking negative, hate filled reviews by telling myself that I wouldn't mind it if it happened to me.

My favorite is probably the one calling Xcom Quest "Ant Shit" then detailing the procedure to how one could find out what ant shit tasted like. Although I feel bad that the guy stopped running it after that.

JQOP has a lot of stuff for his Quest, even the weirder tangents. I asked at one point whether the Quest would have been in a position to continue if Cybele or Mio was picked, and he had that weird Battletech character sheet for both.

All the Hyades have three forms each, for example. There are also five variations of how this arc could have gone, but one is REALLY spiteful.

I’m not even sure where to begin with this quest. It was a test of my will to even get through to the end of the posted chapters (which was up to #7 by the time of this review). The writing was poor, the characters were awful, the world is half-assed at best, and most importantly, the smut is downright painful to read. But anyone can just SAY something is bad, so join me on this wonderful ride as I try my hardest to sort out these painful, painful memories into a tour guide of a hell you’ll hopefully never have to suffer. No, but if the MC frees Hellebore, she hijacks Mio's body, then imitates Mio until she gets a chance to slip the leash. Unless the MC figures it out, she uses an inherent power to drain the life from anyone on the campus, and eats her daughter's soul. If the Athame isn't used to kill her early-on, she invades the Diadem to seize control.
The thing that will break Mio is Hellebore using 'her' hands to torment and kill the girls who were previously harassing her. Once Hellebore has enough juice to assume Apocalyptic Form (Merging with all three cryptids) she can tank hits from the Diadem's main guns.

So, I'm thinking about running a quest, but I have a couple different premises and I can't quite decide which one I want to go with. So, I thought I'd go ahead and post them here, see which one people would be most interested in.

>1.) Powerless Superhero Quest - Think something like a cross between Hero Academia and that one Disney channel movie Sky High. Super powers are passed on via genetics, and those with them are kept track of by the government. Most work as superheroes, helping them keep the peace when unregistered supers commit crimes. To this end, the government has a special academy where they specifically train supers for this job. You play as a character whose parents were both very influential superheroes during the first outbreak of supers, but unlike your siblings, you were born without powers. Regardless, you've wanted to be a hero all your life, and so you're at least able to make it into the program's Sidekick division, where they put all the supers that aren't strong enough to deal with super-criminals, but can at least help deal with more mundane crimes. The quest goes from there, with you trying to keep up with the other sidekicks when you have no powers at all. Unlike the two shows I mentioned above though, you don't actually get super powers later; You've gotta find ways to deal without having any.

>2.) Fallen Chaos Quest - This one is kind of in the vein of a JRPG. Originally, the world was made by the two Primordial gods of Order and Chaos. Both tended to fight amongst themselves a lot on how to actually make the Earth work, but eventually it got so out of hand that an actual fight broke out between the two. This ended with Order sealing all of Chaos' powers away, imprisoning him in stone. The quest starts with you playing Chaos, having been freshly broken free by a group of cultists that got the wrong idea of what you were actually like. Turns out Order has convinced most of the world that you were a terrible malevolent being responsible for all the worlds ills, and while some of that might be true, she certainly left out the part where she didn't want humans to have free will, or any of the other things that would make her look bad. You also discover that your power has been divided, to the point that you are little more than a particularly powerful mortal. So now, you have to retrieve your power from the temples where she divided and sealed them, while also evading the vast empire Order has built while you were sleeping. But on the bright side, not everyone likes her or the empire, and there are a couple "barbarian" nations you can stay in to lay low for the most part. From there, you start assembling a party and move towards re-gathering your powers, while also seeing some of the stuff you made from the eyes of a pseudo-mortal (turns out monsters weren't such a great idea, for example).

So, which of those two do you think you'd be more interested in following /qtg/?
>>
>>1199482
>no powers super quest
>shadow quest redux from chaos' point of view

Maybe the second one.
Not sure how much of anon's character inflections you're willing to withstand, but they just might play the character straight and double down on their "wrong things," or go in a completely different direction and protect all evil smiles because it might prove more enjoyable.
>>
>>1199482
>Disney channel movie
Why would you ever watch something like that?
>ancient evil regaining power quest
One of the least original quest premises ever.
Basically both of those ideas are shit but the superhero one is marginally less shit.
>>
>>1199521
>Not sure how much of anon's character inflections you're willing to withstand, but they just might play the character straight and double down on their "wrong things," or go in a completely different direction and protect all evil smiles because it might prove more enjoyable.

That's a valid thing they could do if they want to, although a big part of the quest would be the QMC kinda figuring out how humans work, cause he's been asleep for a really long time and plus he never really stopped to consider things from the tiny mortals' perspective until he was forced down to (almost) their level.

That said, I'd want to stress that neither Chaos or Order are inherently good or evil; Too much of either is a bad thing, really. So, the QMC might stick to his guns and try to overthrown his sister, or he might gain a new perspective on things and try to find some compromise, or wherever else the players choose to take it.

>>1199525
>Why would you ever watch something like that?

Oh, I never said it was good. Was pretty fuckin' bad to be honest. It was just kind of similar in concept and I remembered watching it as a kid about halfway through writing up the setting, and how there were some basic similarities in the set-up (like there being a separate program for the scrubs that could only be sidekicks at best).
>>
>>1199482
>>1199525
>>1199565
That's not just similar, that's basically the first half of Sky High before the kid gets his powers.

I liked it.
>>
>>1199521
>>1199565
Oh yeah, also, Shadow Quest Redux? Can't say I'm familiar, although I've heard the name before. Does it have a similar concept?
>>
>>1199567
It was alright as a kid, but when I think back to it as an adult I remember there was a lot of jank. Like how they copped out and just gave the kid superpowers despite establishing he didn't have any at first.

But yeah, the set-up is pretty similar, but I'm planning to take it in a totally different direction if I do end up running that premise.
>>
Academy Tournament Organization Quest is running:

>>1199569

>>1199565

Shadow Quest was basically everything you described there. The character was the resurrected god of orders power broken into pieces and given a program wipe then had adventures with mortals and their moral-mortal problems, being autistic because no human contact, and some bots thrown in there too. Whole being a boogyman for a world with quite a history drift, although under certain circumstances it was very justified.

Eh, thinking about it I'd probably play the supers quest. Not many people can write old god resurrection well if at all.

Be careful you introduce lore elements gradually through speech and peoples' behaviors, otherwise it's not interesting and it's too much reading going by numerous mentions of such by various Anons through quests and generals alike, not my personal opinion . Don't make char gen a three-way split choice on the spot, players will lose interest and just choose whatever.

Speaking of char gen, if you're going to put up a gender vote, you may as well be prepared to write for a male main character and not even include the vote.

Finally. I was starting to dislike all these bare bones quests with minimalist character choice changes/setups that shut down any true selection.
I mean, knowing that space pirate is just one option is already great. Run it and forget the score on that Bleach AU.

Honestly you also have to look at board bloat, there is already a few bleach quests and since they are fanfiction they will most likely get more votes than an original universe. Besides its honestly all up to what you want to run.

Different people have different wants. I like autistic detail when it has meaning.
It shows work. If it's done well it also shows purpose and how the QM thinks.
But it's still a sliding scale. There is really bad chargen, there's good chargen, and there's "QM did not think through the why's here at all, quest dropped" chargen.

Some pre-designed characters flop just as bad as terrible chargen because they don't really get characterized or they're not likeable. It's nice to choose not just who you are and what you can do, but also background and maybe a tiny bit of previous relationships.

That can all be done in one half-assed prompt choosing between presets, or spread through a narrative across two or three. Or it can just come up later when it's made relevant.
It's like, hey, here's your first hint of the QMs initial level of player control, take it or leave it.

Strictly narrative chargen can also flop harder than a sheet selection if the QM just can't write characters, I think good QMs can make most forms of chargen work well when they have a reason to use it.
>>
What is the best time to run a quest?

I always got two or three players Which is i am thankful of. they are nice
>>
>>1206218
One of my biggest problems with chargen is the fact that /qst/ almost always picks the same character and tries to minimize faults and make the character a diplomancer instead of trying different characters who actually have flaws and do make mistakes.

How do you know when you've made a good waifu?

If there's multiple candidates when it comes time to "pick" is it possible to resolve things with little butthurt?
>>
>>1207577
Official stance is that it's not allowed. Realistically though, seeing as literal furry quests get a pass you probably will too.

>>1208089
You know you've made a good waifu when you aren't the one who made her a waifu. Quest players can waifu literally any character for the simple reason that they turn the character into whatever they want their waifu to be. All you gave them was the framework.
>>

You'll need to be pretty clear about how the whole thing will go, because the base assumption is that there will be someone "overseeing" stuff.

Without pictures, you're going to have a hard time keeping interest up. Also, most people can't be fucked to make pictures, even on tegaki(the lack of tegaki introductions doesn't help either).

Frankly I don't see how this will be in any way entertaining unless you're collaborating a worldbuilding thing to create a new setting.
>>

So now that last /qtg/'s fanfiction memes are over, what's the actual consensus? Do most people prefer OC, fanfic, monster dickgirl scorpion-kin or what?

OC because I don't want to participate in a fanfic quest if I don't know the source material and am unfamiliar with most sources used for fanfic quests

- Too much time spent on chargen +/- meaningless choices since 90% of /tg/ characters end up very similar
- Too much freedom without a solid base to establish a character, making it either too generic (boring) or too schizophrenic (inconsistent)
- above point is admittedly a fine line to walk since it has to be a compelling enough character to be interesting, generic enough that neckbeard players/autists can self insert if it's a power fantasy, but have enough change/character development to be compelling
Tbh a lot of the more successful quests I've seen have started with a

if not a set of pre-generated characters thinly veiled as a collection of traits and the QM has consistently hammered home those as part of the character for the first handful of threads

>waifus
When you introduce multiple romance-able female characters (or in bad cases, just female) and your thirsty AF players focus on trying to get laid over reasonable IC goals and you allow your players enough freedom to pursue this line of interest to the point that it dominates the quest, to the detriment of all other aspects of the story

as an addendum, while ymmv, I've noticed that waifus v often kill quests simply because they become the main focus of players. Waifus themselves prob aren't bad, but given that autism in some form will always be present in your threads, I imagine that as a QM you want that autism focused on things that can help advance the plot. Ideally, brainstorming, Q/A stuff, skill point distribution, powersperging, whatever, but even meta discussion, or players forming factions based on decision making is not actively detrimental since it all leads forward.

Waifushit ultimately leads nowhere. Haremshit? Leads to waifu factional wars. Choose your waifu? Leads to endless salt. Smut? Leads to players choosing the smut option every chance they get

New fun (fun is subjective) Quest, it's another medieval fantasy-esque adventure. Also is a drawquest. You'll have fun one way or another I promise.
