Welcome back to Alien World, anons! When last we left off, a thriving coastal ecosystem was created. The thread is still up if you want to continue it: >>1136626
But things are changing in this young world; a new creature, the Emina (pictured) has evolved- though their larval form is water-bound, in maturity they take flight, feasting on microscopic airborne bacteria. Under the waves, the beds of Irakoweed, Seafruit, and Whip Irako spread far and wide; some eventually find themselves climbing up and up...until they eventually reach the land. Many die, but after thousands of years, some manage to take root on the beaches of Alien World.

Want to get evolving, but haven't before? It's easy!
Simply pick a creature you want to evolve, and modify its picture slightly, giving a brief explanation of what and why- While the 'rule of cool' still exists, evolving simply to evolve is not really in the spirit of the game. Post the new image as a .PNG!!!
>But Wheelie, I can't draw!
Neither can I, join the club :^)

Charts of existing organisms will follow shortly, as they still need a bit of work.

The Gossamer Idrai take adavantage of the oxygen rich air and extend their flight abilities use even more. They evolve lungs to gain oxygen faster, more efficiently, and without having to use energy to extract it from the water; while also gaining more areas to live far beyond the water. They also evolve the ability to eat the airborne bacteria, but must regularly eat the Bloating Ubi to remain in flight.

With the richness of the oceans rising from increased volcanic activity, forests of Giant petrified quas erupt in short order.
Due to the increased energy storage, it is still able to support segments that rise above water and cannot filter effectively for themselves.

>>1149230
The abovewater segments of the Quas Forests allow a new trait to be revealed.
Whereas before the spores produced by quas would simply get caught in the flowing current and deposited elsewhere, the 'breathing' process of quas now shoots them far away through the air.

This causes quas to spread much more rapidly than before once it hits the forest stage.
[Trait revealed: Spore shooter]

Mememe

While the fruits of the seafruit tend to stay at the seafloor, some are swept up on land, where they begin to grow and flourish in the carbon dioxide-rich environment and lack of natural predators. Its fruit became more red, and began growing more towards the top of the tree, a trait which would help later because it allowed the fruit to fully ripen before being eaten. At this point, the size of the new plant, called the Beachfruit, was roughly the same size as the Seafruit - 4-5 feet.

To take advantage of the coral forests, the horned idrai, a offshoot, gather their tentacles together and coat them with some type of hardening substance. These "Horns" are used to break parts off the coral forest.

From time to time parts of the Herako carpets get washed on to the shore.
And with them the clinger Idrai, an offshot of that species eventually adapted to their new environment. Growing longer "claws" to walk on, and a bellows like lung on its back.
Also their tentacles get surrounded for the most part in chitin for better use on land. They serve as their primary sensory organ, since their water adapted olfactory sense is only marginally usefull in an gas environment.
They still eat fruit and seed, but with the lack of the Herako around they loose the ability to use their poison. (Since its derived from Herako seeds.)

It takes quite some time for the Quas to be able to survive outside the seas due to it's heavy reliance on environmental filtration, but eventually a strain of Fatty Quas manages to survive long enough to germinate on land in very damp earth or earth nearby a water source.

The [Hapahazard Growth] causes it to stick closer to the ground in a hard carpet, with most of the real growth happening belowground as it sucks up the nearby minerals.

Now that the Beachfruit has come aboard, the emina grew a needle-like proboscis, similar to that of a mosquito, so that it could suck up the delightfully sweet juices of the beachfruit, which it used as sustenance. It also gained antennae and eyes, which it would need to see without bumping into everything. At this time, the emina was king of the skies.

The horned idrai coming to prominence make way for a mutation of the Giant Petrified Quas to become more common.

This mutation has the quas forests storing inconvenient and toxic materials in their fatty flesh before being expunged. Normally this is not a problem, but when ruptured it is bad news for predators, though the quas itself will simply store the released material elsewhere if it returns to it.

The creeper quas begins storing energy in larger amounts, that help it out outlast other strains during dry periods in growth.
This manifests in the form of a soft fleshy area in underground portions that are developed enough to accommodate it.
>>
beachfruit is such a ridiculous evolution, non-canon niggas

Btw, the quas chart is incorrect. The 'Porus' quas is actually a straight shot from base quas and the Giant Petrified quas is a derivative of fatty, just like 'Chute'.

Someone said the reef rilva also wasn't getting love so I'll do something with it. Though the reef rilva could no longer eat the harder quas clumps and the softer clumps were either dying out or had defense mechanisms such as biting mouths or poisonous fruit, the long-nosed reef rilva turned back to hunting shelled denghs and other bottom-feeders. Its long beak was incredibly useful with piercing the shelled denghs' hard carapaces, but it was a bit slow against the legged versions of the shelled dengh that could skitter across the ocean floor with ease. So, the long-nosed rilva's many flagellae were replaced by three large ones that could move with ease. The long-nosed reef rilvas' tentacles also mimicked the quas's tentacles, meaning that it could sneak up on its prey easier as well.

Let's make the jelucid more pretty.

Here we have the Greater Jelucid family. This is the first incident of color variation within a single species, as there are three primary greater jelucids - the Great Blue Jelucid, the Great Purple Jelucid, and perhaps the most feared, the Great Pale Jelucid. In addition to growing longer, the tentacles on its top grew to help defend against predators and on its bottom many small strands grew to ensnare prey. It is around this time that the jelucids gained their signature poison-barbed tentacles, which it uses to paralyze and kill unfortunate fish and other creatures. While the Great Blue and Great Purple Jelucid prefers to just sit and wait for prey to get caught in its tentacles, the Great Pale Jelucid actively seeks out its prey.

During their growth, many young Veltar find themselves washed ashore along with their host Herako, as they hatch from the plant they are unable to survive, save for a few poisonous ones as they have the ability of photosynthesis as a food supplement.

The large poisonous Veltar soon find themselves stranded on land, far away from their breeding and hunting grounds. They struggle to move forward with their weak flagella and now useless Jets.

Some develop more , stubbier and harder flagella to at least somewhat move around.
Using the nearby beachfruit as their new breeding grounds.

Others simply seed into the ground, where they are stuck, making all attempts at movement pointless.

Here, the Veltar line splits into 2 new species yet again.

With it's new habitat vanishing, the Beach Veltar adapts yet again.
It's muscle bulges have become smaller and increased in number, now every flagella has it's own muscle bugle for more precise and independent movement.
Additionally, the semi-soft stubby flagella , have become fully fledged hard stubs , functioning as the first ever Legs developed on a creature.
These beach veltar are no longer poisonous, and have slightly better eyes to pursue the life of a Predator yet again.

From the waters emerged a new landfaring species, the Land Dengh. It developed a system of breathing similar to the emina where oxygen would be absorbed through pores in its body. Its primary diet is the Creeper Quas's fleshy interior. The land dengh would often make burrows in the Creeper Quas, using its powerful horned mandibles and strong claws to gradually chomp through it. Visual changes include the further development of its claws and front mandibles and a longer abdomen.

The Beachfruit developed two adaptations that made it more survivable. The first is bad tasting seeds. While the Beachfruit Emina snacked on the juices of the beachfruit leaving the fruit mostly intact, the clinger idrai would eat the whole fruit, seeds included. The bad-tasting seeds made it so even though the fruit was eaten, the plant could still reproduce. (no difference in the plant itself so no picture needed)

Another adaptation was the hardening of the stem of the beachfruit, making it harder for the clinger idrai to latch onto. This had the consequence of making the beachfruit plant MUCH taller, up to 30 feet tall. The fruits of the new beachfruit, called the Kokofruit Palm, grew thick shells which would float into the ocean, wash up on new shores, and grow from there.

The creeper quas explodes.
Literally.

A mutation causes the creeping quas to be unable to take out as much energy as it stores, and though this slows down its growth in the early stages, it soon causes shocking transformations.

After accumulating enough energy the creeper heart will explode, sending spores and fragments of quas flying hundreds of meters away. The sturdy quas is able to survive and recuperate, and the ruptured chemical storage allows what fragments that do fly away to have an extremely enriched start, causing them to take root on soil with almost any level of hyration.

This mutation allows creeper quas to expand further away from the coasts, covering the land.

The treacherous airspace allows a strain of emina that was doomed to extinction to flourish.

Their six wings are smaller than the base strain, but allow them much more agility, giving them the ability to live among the exploding heart creepers with less chance of being killed in an explosion.

The exposed soft flesh then serves as an excellent fuel source, causing their numbers to skyrocket in short periods of time. These two factors combined [dangerous environment] [accelerated breeding] allow them to secure a spot in the foodchain where none existed before despite their inferior maximum speed.

The Beachfruit begin to make an incredibly toxic poison and store it in their seeds, with only a small amount per seed. This small amount is still enough to kill a Clinger Idrai. The poison doesn't in any way affect the fruit, only the seeds.

The race to good fortune among emma strains becomes more fierce, and the faster mutations slowly begin to take the lead.

A new strain rises to dominance, though only by the width of a hair.

A second mutation makes itself known and shoots a strain to a more dominant position.

This mutation allowed the five spotted humming emma greater cognitive abilities. Though the difference is small, it allows the strain to avoid extinction by operating around their faster brethren.

Thats it for me for now

The Veltar plant as it has become unable to move, it developed a drastically different body-shape.
Becoming thinner and it's centre and top for it's head and body to bend , regaining a significant amount of movement ability.
Having been driven to near extinction, earlier, they now find themselves in a more than favorable environment.
In an effort to find food, they have been continuously seeding further inland, as they require little water.

On their way, they dropped the poison and instead grew red specks to attract animals mistaking them for fruit. Which the Veltar plant then kills with it's acidic seed.

Now that they have begun seeding in the newly formed fields of exploding Quas however, they found the perfect hunting ground.
As Quas as immobile just like them, the Veltar plant developed a more sophisticated mouth structure.
It's pincers develop into a primitive sort of beak, that has not quite grown together yet.
Having the ability to twist, turn and bend itself, the Veltar plant seeds itself where it can find the most exploding Quas and then begins to eat it alive for the Veltar's entire life-span.

Doh ho ho, any perceptive individual should be able to handle it.
This is only a problem for mindless beasts.
>>
>>1154390
You mean like having an aggressive plant that predates on the things for it's entire life, and follows it wherever it spreads?
>>
>>1154399
Something like that, though they'd die when exploding as long as their reproductive cycle is shorter than the explosion rate (and their spawn can survive it) it's an excellent parasitic relationship.
>>
>>1154425
I missed some punctuation there, but I think you get the gist.
>>
>>1154436
Well I'd assume their reproduction is faster, after all they're plants. and small ones at that.
>>
>>1154425
and survival isn't much of an issue either, since they grow underground.

The Beach Veltar grows longer and more muscular legs, that instead of growing , grow downward, elevating the main body by the length of it's legs.
These legs have become far more complex than that of any other organism, in many ways they are almost as advanced as the main body itself.

These legs boast a complex muscular structure to both support their own weight, and that of the Veltar, and also giving it a decent amount of speed.
Claws at the end of their legs give it a more stable footing.
These claws are made from dead cells, that together, form a hard wooden structure. They grow extremely slow, but indefinitely.

As the Veltar as a largely muscleless being, cannot quite support these muscular legs on it's own, and so along the entire length of the legs, a tube of cells forms inside, that is filled with all the minerals it's digestive system can't handle, and would normally clog up it's organs, leading to death, forming a tough crystalline structure reminiscent of bones.

This development significantly increases it's lifespan, however not as much as one would expect, as the young must be able to hunt already, it takes longer for the Beach Veltar to grow in it's initial seed stage, accumulating minerals such as iron, chalk and salt, to form these important Leg-crystals early.

(second pair of legs not shown, because top-down view)

Bumping- may need a Landfall part 2, seeing as there's only been a few species coming to land. Also the Exploding Quas is spreading fast- soon there won't be any open soil, just Quas.
>>
>>1155230
actually OP, the Veltar plant keeps the population in check, seeing as they graze them off constantly, and follow them whereever they seed
>>
>>1155247
Well, nevermind then :^) Still, not enough creatures to justify a new biome yet.
>>
Honestly, I love how this Evo has become an arms race between plants.

I mean the Quas are corals, so like a plant/rock hybrid thing.

And then you have all the descendants of the Veltar - which are like Plant/Fungus/Animal hybrid.

Actually you know what?
Since every form of life has some sort of classification , but my creatures fall into 3 of those at the same time, I'll just make a new classification of lifeform for them

I dub the entire concept of a Plant/Fungus hybrid that behaves and develops like a regular Animal, from here on "Veltarid"

Obviously starting at the earliest common ancestor : The Veltar.
A plant with muscles and fungal organs.

I'd bring up more species, but I don't want this to be some weird world shaped only by my own mental image.

Managing Quas (Petrified and Creeper variants) and Emma (humming variants) right now, but I won't go over doing two at a time.
Right now I've slowed down because im waiting for the rest of the world to catch up with the various changes the plants have made.

Still, I'll post in the morning if nothing else happens. We'll see where this leads.

With the fruits getting less tasty or poisonous, the Skittering Idrai, beginn to eat the plantmatter itself instead of the fruits.
They develop powerful mandibles, that allows the idrai to eat into the plant, hollowing out small caverns inside for them to live in.

Increased predation servers to cull the weaker variants of exploding quas, leaving only the strongest and most robust strains over time.

The dominant strain grows much faster in general, and explodes less frequently due to less energy being stored, though the stores will still violently decompress if ruptured, engaging the cycle early.

This variant has grown seeds with a hard core around which a thin but strong fleshy exterior fans out. The hard core can survive the terrors of explosion with ease, while the surrounding fan keeps it in the air for extended periods allowing it to spread further and further away, carried on the winds.

Sometimes these seeds can float for hours in the sky before landing, opening them to being consumed by flying creatures. Those that complete this harrowing journey however are well suited to quickly becoming another patch of creeping quas.

The humming Emma begin to show differences between the sexes.

The male Hummer grows a slimmer abdomen and a bright red crest to attract the attention of mates from far away. While the female Hummer has much larger rear wings that allow for increased grace in flight, accomplishing smooth loops and turns where the male has more jerky movements.

The female will find a male and make herself known before the chase begins.
The chase between them is always in the favor of the female who allows the male to catch up if he is worthy, and leaves him in the dust if not.

The five spotted emma grows more intelligent and vicious, preying on anything that it can.

In the breeding cycle it will sometimes rub its body upon the quas that grows below it, acquiring some of its colour which it uses to fool the female humming emma into allowing it to breed.
Though its agility is nowhere near the male humming emma, by attracting it with the prized fleshy bits of quas or veltar it can be deemed worthy, at least temporarily.

In this way their numbers flourish alongside the humming emma.

Wait, what do these guys do for food? I get that the marine ones are basically coral filter feeders, but there can't be enough food in the air, especially not if they have enough energy to be exploding all over the place.
>>
>>1156497
Guess I do need to do the outline then.

The creep burrows into the soil just like a normal plant and sucks up required minerals and such from the soil. The evolution that allows that came way back when they were still an underwater strain, with the suction force.

The excess energy heart is something that occurs once it's mature that allows them to store energy and last through periods of low energy without dying. That was back in the creepheart stage.

The exploding creep came later and the exploding effect only happens over a long period if they have abundant resources. Normal life cycle involves them shooting out seeds/spores (from the shooter evolution) that fly a couple meters away, or get carried away by the currents for underwater variants.

If it gets enough energy to explode it can throw things much much further, but this is a side effect of a bad(?) mutation not some built for life cycle end game. It can survive the explosion due to it's hardy nature and use the remnant chemicals to recover.
While the seeds and quas pieces that get thrown to the ends of the earth likely mostly die off due to the actual life cycle interruption, the ones that get lucky and get some of the exploded heart with them can survive and flourish, growing past the baby stage with increased rapidity regardless of the richness of the actual surroundings.

This is not a fast process, these evolutions take place over hundreds of thousands of years (usually in these games), so even if only 0.001% of the explosions created extra spread elsewhere it would soon cover any given landmass(which is why OP ruled that).

Combined with it's already low level of competition and consumption we have the current situation of creep dominance.

The veltar follows the creep which allows them to spread further than where they normally would be able to, and the other creatures that actually eat quas and/or veltar follow suit. I imagine this is causing inner landmass expansion way earlier than would otherwise be possible, which is neat as the only other food options on land are beach fruit right now.

TL;DR they act like normal plants and suck food from the ground, they store energy like cactus's and so can grow in places other plants find difficult. Veltar follow quas -> predators follow both

The Veltar plant gradually evolved to eat less of the Quas main body, and rather go for the Cores, as these provide an abundance in nutrients.
To get these nutrients, the primitive beak of the Veltar is simply not enough, as busting the Cores will harm the plant itself.
The strains with tougher beaks survive more often and soon, the Beaked Veltar develops in the Quas fields.
With their thick, wooden beaks they can bust open the Cores of the Quas without suffering any damage, effectively bringing their spread to a halt.

A mutation occurs in a surviving population of Rivla Quas. They no longer grow clumped together. These quas bud off single-polyp pods that grow as that same single polyp. In addition, the polyps of these quas are actually larger than their colonial cousins.

Let's call the Solo Quas for now.
