Speaking of numbers here they are. Looking at the broader market things are not really in decline, indeed there was a peak in 2005-6 but it's since recovered. The recession hit anime studios really hard, but they're recovering.

I'm fairly positive that I've seen other reports on revenue and market growth etc since this date (13 is a bit out of date really) and it's been continually going up. I thought I had those recent stats saved too but they elude me; maybe someone else does.

On this, note that the pink at the bottom "overseas", is us, the West. It's always been just a tiny piece and has hardly changed. Looking at that piece it is also higher than 2006 levels and surely last year/year before that has spiked tremendously from netflix, crunchyroll and funimation stream services.

Anime outside of TV broadcasts had no easy way to monetize in the West but it looks like they only recently figured out something that works.

If you look at the chart just posted up there you can see that in the grand scheme of things movies, thus Miyazaki's real plane of expertise, are a drop in the bucket in the actual anime industry. He owns his own entire studio that does everything for him and he gets to call the shots on what to adapt/create and why. The actual anime industry does not run that way at all; Miyazaki has a rather coddled setup where he can generally do what he wants from his command post when the anime studios generally bid for or are given projects to adapt by the big-name manga/LN publishers and rarely have the resources (read: money) and/or risk appetite to make something on their own outside of publisher support.
