British troops join to fight and defend the Crown.

American troops enlist for glory and to make their family proud.

Most American troops shouldn't even be there in the first place. They're all children that have aspirations beyond war, and after they finish their duty they will typically go onto university and be someone.

British troops are the opposite. After their duty, they head to the pub with their mates and piss away their pension.

It's pretty much the reason why American troops in WW2 were largely inefficient, particuarly in the pacific. MacArthur would always put Australian troops on the front lines, and American troops on reserve. It wasn't because the Americans were bad, it's because they were scared and would rout the moment anything larger than a pellet gun encroached on their position.

Having served alongside them in Afghanistan, there are marked differences between British and American soldiers.

American soldiers once motivated aren't as bad as any other but they do have a 'Rambo complex' that exists until they meet hostile fire.

Americans think the Brits are too laid back and casual and don't really understand this attitude, even in the mess - Brits eat and chat but Americans eat as much as they can and seem to think it's just a refueling exercise.

I'm not saying that any countries forces are better than others but there are profound differences.

I would chalk up a lot of it to MOS/specialty and time in theater.

The first time I got mortared it was scary, the last? 2nd to last day in country and I was getting my hair cut; flip barber ran to the bunkers and I was so 'eh whatever' I just kept reading my maxim and didn't get up out of the chair. Only time, once I got used to it, that was legitimately pucker inspiring was when I was out on patrol and we got bracketed. One of my instructors was telling me that by the end of his first tour he was so indifferent about dying that when his platoon found an IED he just walked over and picked it up. To be fair, you would have to do the same if the US weren't subsidizing defence for the whole EU. We need a large military not necessary an elite one to fill that role of European protector. Since we do that, the UK can focus on having a smaller, higher quality, force with a greater density of specialized troops. We already have most of the cannon fodder, and "police men".

People died during training to make them self actualized soldiers and not cannon fodder. Heck, a few years back a recruit got stabbed during training.

American army is a much more aggressive recruiter and it is easier to get in. It's also not considered a 'normal' career option in Europe, only hard lads try to get in.

in my opinion the leadership is the incompetent bit as in the old days most of them paid to command troops and after that got banned they got moved up the chain fast as their regimental commander went to school with their dad. or sons took their fathers place in the local regiment. the Tommy Atkins in the ranks was just as good as a regular soldier in a foreign army provided he was lead effectively by someone who wasn't too inbred. it didn't help that until after ww1 British infantry doctrine was let the officers and senior NCO make all the decisions, which led to a lack of initiative in the ranks due to a fear of getting flogged or worse.
