What are your thoughts /pol/?

btw, I have around 600 flight hours on the Osprey as enlisted aircrew and of course was a Plane Captain. Ask me your stupid ass questions about the bird if you like

Low calibre aircraft for low calibre pilot, seems fitting to an ex-mil thats browsing an anime image board

The Osprey has always been extraneous equipment. In level flight, it provides a bit more speed than a helicopter, with very mild tactical advantage gained, but at the cost of a very dangerous and highly maintenance intensive platform.

Nobody else uses that concept. Guess why?

Yes pic related. There is an interconnecting driveshaft going through the wing that connects all engines and gearboxes. It can fly, transition, hover, and land all on one engine. Retards will tell you one propeller will stop spinning.

This aircraft design is actually called a tiltrotor, and aircraft like it have been made since the 1950s. The Osprey was birthed in 1980, fyi.

>>139152021
ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
>What is effective range
>"In level flight, it provides a bit more speed than a helicopter, with very mild tactical advantage gained"
You are such a low IQ faggot I don't even know where to begin. The Osprey flys circles around rotary aircraft and has range that FAR exceeds it's contemporaries. The Osprey can fly from one side of Iraq to the other in about two others. Let me know what other helo can match that. There is a reason it is highly prized as a TRAP aircraft. You however are a brainlet and actual military tactics goes far beyond your scope. Stick to minecraft faggot.

No, in airplane mode the blades literally come within inches of the fuselage. It's highly plausible in either mode that the pilot could get chopped up by the blades, plus where the fuck does that leave the passengers?

>>139152832
>/pol/ always bitching about propaganda
>believes every word of it RE: V-22

>>139152838
Good question. iirc the jet guys always have more trouble adjusting because flying a helo is not as intuitive or easy as flying an airplane. Add them together especially when flying in conversion mode [cont]
>>
Where's the number two engine?
>>
>>139160119
Well he is rather sophisticated, otherwise they would call him the Plain Captain
>>
>>139150376
Does it waste a a lot of fuel?
>>
>>139150376
1. It's like flying in a scarier version of the MH-53

2. It needs way to big of an LZ to fly to the X, so it's not suitable to fly X or even offset X.

Because it can't land on the X, it needs to do offset infil, but because it's so loud you need at least a 7Km infil to mask the noise.

Tactically, it's nowhere near as good as an MH-60/MH-47, or MH-6.

As a caveat, I'm removing fast roping from the equation for a couple of reasons. First, we never fast rope in real life because it's way too fucking dangerous and two the MV-22 is even more dangerous to do it out of than a helo.

Those are my complaints about the airframe, it has advantages for many other reasons and for convention (forces) lift I think it's really awesome.
>>
>>139152838
...and it can get difficult. However, all Osprey pilots get both their airplane and helo licenses before going to Osprey flight school, so it's not like they're just thrown to the dogs. Most pilots adjust just fine.

>>139154559
>Osprey
>Lockheed
ha, retard

>>139160119
Plane Captain means I earned the qualification of inspecting the aircraft for a ready-for-flight basis. That means opening up the engine nacelles, looking at all gearboxes, wiring, check oil levels, inspect the propellor drive tube, land gear areas, fuselage interior, avionics systems, fuel quality, etc. Almost the entire plane is inspected daily. If I'm doing it by myself, it can take up to around two hours if there is maybe a lot of dirt/oil, or oil that I need to replenish
>>
>>139153308
>pol still does not understand what licensing it.
>>
>>139161631
Oh haha I thought you were a pilot. 2 hours to do a preflight walkaround? That would take about 5 minutes on a comparable sized helicopter or fixed wing aircraft.
>>
>>139161270
Not sure what you mean by waste exactly. But no.

>>139161420
>Muh LZ size
>Fighting primarily in arid wide desert environment for nearly two decades

Yeah flying slow as dogshit in a giant grey schoolbus, really tactical my dude

All very cute. I guess that's why I never dropped off a bunch of tier one spooks with their 4 eye'd nightvision and shitohwaitIdid

fast roping is a meme anyway
>>
>>139150376
How many times have you been killed in one?
>>
>>139162056
Yeah it can take some time. That's why they torment us about getting the qualification (lots of studying) so the squadrons can have as many plane captains as possible. Put 3 plane captains on one inspection and suddenly the plane is done in 20 min
>>
>>139162056

>>
>>139162135
Thank you for agreeing with me.

>and shitohwaitIdid

We used MV-22's for what amounted to ~2 of our rotations. We requested not to use them again or at a minimum not to be limited to their support.

We even took conventional RW lift in lieu of 160th being able to support just so that we had the tactial flexibility to conduct operations in their most optimal manner.

eg. going to the X.

For flights out to isolated compounds in Helmand, sure, take the MV-22.

Great thread, enjoyed reading your posts.

Can you elaborate on how Japan having Opreys changes the dynamic? Would this be for like an island hopping campaign, or for ferrying soldiers from Japan to mainland China/Korea?

If you took the time to see you would see that I already corrected my mistake in the post above yours, let me guess you need an ASVAB waiver to get in

Maybe the Japs can finally fix it. It's notoriously prone to breaking down.

The full fledged mechanics who dont fly center around the heavier workload stuff yes. Flying mechanics dont have as much time to learn mech work so most of the time we suck at serious maintenance. A fair number of guys will be great at both though

as a german who admires german engineering, have to tip my hat at how the V-22 Osprey works, looks and functions as a whole.

GG, japs.

Why don't we just give these to ISIS so they can fly themselves into Allah's warm embrace and into death? Do we hate Japan now? Why do we want Japan to kill themselves?
>>
>>139150376
Would they be suitable for small air forces (eg. SAR, medium range MPR?

Speak of the devil. An Osprey just flew over my house (really, not LARPing about WWIII). It's only the 2nd or 3rd time i've ever seen one. I live in Las Vegas but on the far West side of town, on the opposite side of the valley from Nellis AFB.

This is only the 4th-5th time in 5 years that i've seen military aircraft fly over, 4 of the 5 times coming in the last 2 weeks. They are much louder than commercial aircraft and they don't usually fly over the city. In the last 2 weeks i've seen Black Hawks fly over 3 times. Each time going East to West from Nellis to somewhere.

Normally they fly from Nellis to the North where they have most of the state of NV as a training grounds. (Area 51, 52, 53 and Creech AFB where they fly drones just north of Vegas)

>I heard Chyna is trying to develop their own, and UK is looking to buy too
So that's why my company is starting to ramp up v-22 parts production. Glad I found this thread.

If it is an effective piece of equipment, I give my wholehearted blessing. I have worked with Japanese in the past and have nothing but respect for them and feel that they are our best allies in that region if not the world. How about that, Sarge? Or is it Bosun?
