I think these two go hand in hand, oddly enough. The left stands with muslims, but not necessarily with Islam. Religion has a lot of strength in the democratic system because of the tendency to vote as a monolith on certain issues. The right has only managed to remain relevant so long because of the Christian connection. So the left wants to buddy up to the muslim community, ignoring the short term consequences to form a similar connection. Then presumably they'll push more leftist values including atheism (or at least severely watered down Islam) onto their children. Their endgame is a loyal atheist voting block with shared muslim heritage. Stable, sterile, and sure to vote left.
