You can tell the writing has somehow even become shittier and more "Hollywood" just due to the fact they are bypassing written material so subtleties and complexity are gone for whatever the show really had to begin with. It has been like that since season 5. I only watch the show so I can complain about it. Only the fight scenes are good, I really liked the battle last episode.
Everything about the character interactions is so wooden and boring.
The Stark family reuniting was supposed to be this huge moment, but all that ever happens is that two Starks see eachother, they stand there for 5 seconds, one of them smiles and then they hug. Every fucking one of them goes like that.
All those interesting memorable interactions from the first season are gone, like when King Robert visited Winterfell and that that ''you got fat'' moment, or when Tyrion met Jon Snow for the first time and called him a bastard. There are no more memorable interactions. Now a single character states what they want to do and then it zooms in on everyone's face as they look confused.

The first season focused a lot on the scene and how the shot looks, you had wide shots of rooms and locations. Scenes would play out and all the characters that are there are just there.
After season 4 all the scenes are full of close ups of faces, either looking serious or looking confused.

It's crazy how much the show has been downgraded. Just compare it to something like Breaking Bad, Scrubs or X Files. I don't think any of those shows forgot what makes a show fun to watch.
Imagine if the last season of Breaking Bad had just a lot of close ups on faces and dull boring character interactions, like if Walt met Skyler and they would have a moment where they stand around for 5 sec, smile and hug.

It's not even a lack of source material, it's just bad writing and the actors aren't given anything to work with.
The only character interaction I liked this season was Meera Reed saying goodbye to Bran. That was a powerful scene with good lines and the actors had something to work with. It actually feels like a conclusion to their story and it is consistent with their characters.

When someone like Sansa and Bran, or Sansa and Arya met, there is just zero chemistry, no depth, no interesting interactions, nothing. It doesn't even feel like they're characters who belong to the same universe. You can see throughout the books and the series that the general approach is nihilistic in nature. Most traditional values are destroyed, mocked, shown to be redundant,... And the only behaviour that's really awarded with survival and success is the act of learning. The pursuit of knowledge, the awareness that you can always fail and always have much to learn, the ability to see, understand and learn from your mistakes... All the characters that did that survived.

That's a trait that most main characters have: Arya, Sansa, Bran, Davos, Tyrion (to an extent), Sam,... all learn.

Daenerys, Jon, Jaime and Cersei are an exception to that rule. But that's for various reasons.

One of Jaime's main themes is how blind obsession mistaken for love can destroy you, especially when it's reciprocated. Another one is the whole "white knight in shining armour behind all the gloss" thing.

Cersei is the embodiment of fear, crippled by paranoia and superstition. Her story is coming to a close, because all she has to do now is die. We've already seen how she's slowly destroyed everything she held dear over the course of her life and she's now cornered with the last person who (kind of) love her.

Jon and Daenerys are two sides of the same coin: millenials. The generation that was promised unending glory and success to the point where everyone came to believe they would succeed and everything would end well for them. That's why they both act so entitled, eventhough it's on different grounds.

The very reason for their survival is to break that myth. They both have to believe that everything will be alright. They both have to believe that, no matter what, it can all end well for them.

Daenerys is still there.

Jon, in the show, was reduced to a political point after his death in season 5. This makes me think that George Martin has another plan for him in the books. Because Jon has already outlived his purpose and he isn't learning.
