It didn't get any better for those who ventured out west; subjected to the harshness of the wilderness, the terrors of the indian, the vagaries of the bandit and outlaw, the iron fist of the land/railroad/mining/ranching barrons and the law that was on his side; heaven forbid you protest your circumstances, or you may find yourself at the business end of a six shooter or a Pinkerton's truncheon.

It took a special kind of person to survive in America, and this generation would do well to remember it.

The Status of Liberty was originally a gift by the French to America to symbolize their friendship. It had NOTHING to do with immigration, other than just so happening to be clearly visible to many people when they reached Ellis Island.
