Relax, mostly.

Blacksmithing has turned from a hobby into a very real money-maker for me. Ferrier work has kept me gainfully employed, making more money than I ever did with a "real job." I was a postal worker right out of high school for 8 years, but I developed work-related asthma and had to go on permanent disability.

It's not all that bad though; I get about $800 a week in benefits. I spend most of my time playing video games, browsing the Internet, gardening my bonsai trees, and sitting at the local coffee shop with my Macbook while working on my fantasy novel.

I also don't have to worry about rent because my grandfather left me his brownstone. He bought it for about $18,000 back in the 60s when the neighborhood was shitty. Now that all the white people are clamoring to move into BedStuy, the value has gone up to $1.4 million. If the value goes up any more, I'm going to sell and move to a warm state.

My dad's a General contractor, aka the guy who hires the people that come and work on your house, the guy you usually call that shows up looking good and does the estimates etc.

There is nothing free about managing a crew of average construction workers. Half of them are in some state of drunk driving court, and require transportation. Or just don't have a vehicle. So he spends part of his day being a bus driver. All of his money is tied up in vehicles and tools because your average worker these days expects those things, when 20 years ago you were expected to own your own tools.

My dad lives like someone who is a mid tier software engineer, but works 80 hour weeks at 60 years old and has the crushing responsibility of knowing that if he doesn't book work 10 degenerates who hardly have their life together fall on hard times. His feeling of responsibility to make sure the people who dick him around constantly have work so they can eat, that shit keeps him awake at night.

Being the boss is way harder than you give credit for, unless you're a pissant middle manager who works 40 hour weeks, looks forward to being chewed out 2 times a week even though your only real responsibility is pushing tasks around in some kind of agile planning software and implementing HRs new diversity hiring rules or picking international contractors.

Middle managers are oven middle class, and belong in the work camps with the rest of them.

Whether I'm replaceable has nothing to do with literal dead weight like NEETs with so little ambition to think that $1000/mo in wages is an incomprehensible amount of money. So if you just look at the dollars you get per month it might look like a lot, but you likely can afford more things with neet money elsewhere.

The people responding to a specific thread do not necessarily represent the entire board population. People out of work are more likely to whine about this than those that just float along and are doing "well enough". It's like when you read complaints about something, nobody's going to go on the internet and write "Item worked as advertised." but they will if it broke on them.

Are there any books and/or teaching tools you found particularly valuable or would be comfortable recommending?

What's a rough estimate at how long it would take to pull down some sort of paying work from beginner status? - assuming I work my ass off and am genuinely clever.

Do you find the work fulfilling? If so, what about it after all this time?

Much thanks.

being a neet under some long term benefactor or inheritance so you can kinda simulate a long stretch of self actualization and do something creative is one thing, but a neet just barely surviving but had a home/internet has a distinctive type of burn to it... it's like walking outside at 4am in the middle of winter and you feel this emptiness/loneliness in your soul.

well this is simple... like I said if you have a benefactor or money to secure nourishment/shelter/companionship without the stress of barely making it, it's simply the definition of self actualization. what's a pen and a guitar gonna do me if I have low food, worried about dollars for rent, not to mention dealing with societal stigmas about being poor, sure you can do it, be it will require a lot of meditation... also what about family, your relationship with them may be strained if you are barely making it whereas it would likely be better if you're taken care of for x amount of months/years

People don't realize that's the best non violent way to take down your government. Everybody just stop working and all the tax money that maintains the corrupts system would collapse in no time.
>>
>>134877640
If you're in IT or trying to be, I find that taking non-IT work because you can't find that job you expected is the biggest mistake you can make. You're literally sending yourself backwards in career progress.

IT is really fucked right now if you're not at the top. There are literally MILLIONS of low skill helpdesk jobs with NO growth opportunity, NONE at all... but at least its an IT job for your resume and not being a bagger or cashier at your local Albertsons.

Something like 75% of especially entry level jobs are now handled by recruiters. Far too many medium to large companies hire exclusively through recruiters. They've downsized their IT teams to a skeleton crew if they haven't fully outsourced. So when they need to do a big project like a hardware refresh or a infrastructure upgrade, they get a recruiter to send them 2-30 temps for 3-9 months. The company pays the recruiter ~$30-40/hr for each temp and the recruiter pays you ~$15-22/hr, taking a huge profit. Recruiters over sell these positions and tell you there is great opportunity to move to full time with the client company, But you quickly realize this a gentleman's agreement between shitty companies who need IT staffing and the recruiters.

The client company gets employees for a few dollars and hour less than the cost of hiring directly. So $30/hr instead of $35/hr... remember you cost your employer more than your hourly/salary, think benefits and PTO and HR costs for hiring, firing... So they save millions overall if the company is big enough. The recruiter pays you shit so they keep like 40% and give you, the contractor, shit benefits and no job security. And they don't want you to get hired by the client company because then they stop getting their cut. So their incentive is to only find temp positions for their pool of contractors.

But still better to do that and roll the dice, than bag groceries... just sayin.

>>134887652
it's awful really, unless you have literally no family or a nice support structure... most neets have boomers as parents and they have a work mentality that if you don't have work into your late 20s that relationship will certainly be strained.

>>
>>134884056
Hey man, was on my way home.

About time: you could get paying work with just the IT degree and being great at the interview if you can get your foot through the door.

I mostly learned by doing random shit as a kid and after I had all the basics the official documentation on any library of framework of language is pretty much all I used (Except all courses by Tony Alicea on Javascript and NodeJS, he explains it very well and the courses are on piratebay). Very good coworker of mine learned from Free Code Camp and he swears by it, it's apparently super good and also puts you into contact with real people to learn from and gives you real tasks and it's 100% free, but from what I understand from the guy they go REAL slow and thorough but cover most things.

I'll give you some tips for web since I think it's a bit easier than mobile: Best way to learn if you got the time would be full stack(Frontend + Backend). I'd definitely rather hire a newbie on Frontend only, rather than backend or full stack, so learn some web Frontend (HTML5 + CSS Javascript = Mandatory and the first 3 things to learn, in this order (of the 3 only Javascript is really programming, but you'll use the others too, spend at least 4 times more on Javascript than the other 2 combined), then learn either LESS or SASS or SCSS, doesn't matter which, too close to eachother to matter; then learn a good frontend library or framework: Most mainstream ones are React and Angular, React is definitely easier for a newbie and I think it'll be in higher demand than angular almost everywhere.

For backend I'd go for either NodeJS + Express or PHP + Phalcon; with either mySQL and PostgreSQL.

What I told you is stuff that's in high demand, once you learn the concepts it's MUCH easier to transition to whatever becomes the next big thing.

For interviews always seem motivated and disciplined. We've hired people who had almost 0 knowledge just because they convinced us they had those 2 traits.

I'm not a programmer famalam I took a few courses ranging from c#, sql, and java and hated programming it's good money but I suck at it and don't enjoy it in the slightest. I want to be a systems/business analyst or work with data finding trends with stuff like tableau.i actually got an email yesterday from a company I applied for their business analyst position saying they wanted to speak with me after reviewing my resume so my fingers are crossed.
>>134882168
Like anon above me said if you can program and have a few projects to show off and can bullshit your way through a technical interview you will have a job within 2 months if you apply to 80 positions. I tried to teach myself to program more outside of school but I don't enjoy it enough to invest 100's of hours into it without getting paid.
