Thoughts on raves in the 90s, before they became vid related? I was born '95, anyone come of age during those times? What was it like? I go to underground parties looking for those feelings, sometimes they happen, I don't grind, no drugs (for me anyway), just to dance and release energy.

listen I know you're a fag and a baby but drugs literally created the scene, the entire rave movement began with people doing drugs not spergs 'releasing energy dancing'

Say that to the old burnouts hustling for Molly at parties now. Not denying that drugs were a factor, but the positive energy of that time made people truly want to move too

i like the music and the dancers that are GOOD, which is extremely rare. Usually it's just poorly executed liquid pop that is cringe to watch.

90s raves were a good time, full of misplaced innocence and adventure. They weren't the "night club raves" we had now. There was a culture of free expression and a disregard of the governments over reaching arm. WACO was still fresh in our minds and everyone knew the government wasn't our buddy unlike these SJW ravers that want free everything. Plur was still real. The E was real and not these Chinese RCs that have flooded the scene. The music was generally fun and uplifting, not like this angry metal like bro-step these days.

Was a raver through the entire decade of the nineties. I've been to hundreds, never did drugs at any of them. It was all about the people, the music, and the dancing. Then the people started getting shittier and shittier. Then the music started getting shittier and shittier. Then I stopped going.

>>134785956
I'm 42 now. The rave scene in the early 90s was about half-and-half - half of the people were on a variety of drugs, half were not. I was one of the latter.
Honestly, the best "rave" I ever was ever at was in a high school gym in Toledo Ohio in the spring of 93. I was finishing high school at the time and went to the state "thespian" conference... or whatever it was called. Basically just a bunch of high school drama kids.
It was a dance that happened on one of the nights of the conference - one of those "it-will-keep-the-kids-busy-until-they-get-tired" sort of things that happen after the regularly scheduled programming. I don't know who the dj was that they hired, but he was on fire.
Anyway, it turned into a this amazing thing - organically. They tried to recreate the vibe with that weird dance scene they put in Matrix 2 (but this event was 98% white kids ;) It had a powerful sexual charge to it (teenagers relatively unsupervised), but it was somehow completely innocent. On the surface, it was a bunch of sweaty white kids jumping and dancing around together, but it was... i dont know how to articulate it without sounding like a fag... spiritual, maybe is the word. That word is overused, but a fits. Not a single person on drugs, by the way. Purely organic, the way our ancestors used to roll.
I hit the rave scene hard when I went to college, but never recreated that moment. Too many drugs fucking things up.
By the mid to late 90s, you couldn't walk 20 feet at a rave without some 15 year-old asking if you had some X/acid/blow.
It was a brief moment in the 90s (don't get me wrong because I mentioned the pinnacle, some of the other raves I went to were amazing), but it faded. It was simple bad parenting, in my opinion - "why the fuck is your 15-year-old at an abandoned warehouse asking me for ecstasy at 4AM" - but like I said, I'm old.
>>
>>134793371
Agreed. I miss it. Also miss the deep house club scene in NYC before it was ruined. I'm female and I used to wear sneakers and jeans to go dance all night long, sometimes with friends, sometimes by myself. There was no pressure to dress up like a whore. Ended up at some weird ass after parties. Those were the days.

>>

The ones in the woods were great. But in ohio there were a lot if drugs at those too. The last rave I ever went to was in the woods near Cleveland. I finally caved and took the drugs I was offered, not sure what it was. They hit me wrong, so instead of dancing, I just sat cross-legged on the dude's driveway and watched pieces of mulch crawl across the pavement like inchworms. "That's enough of that", I said to myself the next morning.

All of them wore oversize white shirts with those slits on the edges so they could glow under blacklight, short shorts squishing their asses like ballet leotards, garish shades of nail polish, plastic-looking faux-Jordan sneakers, you know it! > real movement
> no one too cool to dance
> loose-fitting clothing
> no slut clothing
> no one bitching about people chilling on speakers
> people with beer away from the center of the floor
> intense and smiling faces

More importantly, what don't you see?

> cellphones
> fuzzy boots
> binkies
> trashy-looking people
> thuggery
> twerking

That's how you do it, boys and girls.

I'm not usually le wrong generation, but I make an exception here, especially when the fuzzy-boot bitches invade the floor where I'm at and fuck the whole mood up.

>>
>>134806072
Keep in mind it was the early/mid 90s. There weren't the 100+ sub classifications of electronic music. Acid house was played heavily, to be sure. A lot of the faster stuff was Chicago style drum and base. That last post where I talked about mulch crawling, the main dj just played a lot of Ninja Tune style acid jazz.
People experimented a lot, avoiding labels. It was almost like when a dj was painted with a label, his style would change.
>>
>>134785956
>just to dance and release energy.

Faggot detected, kys
>>
>>134807935

Here's how it usually goes:

> unique set going on, everyone good
> scene regulars (usually 6-7/10s in decent clothing and backpacks) in the front doing a stable dance, smiling
> one or two couples having a genuine moment
> couple chads out of the way in the front, moving along with beers, but bro-level
> me doing whatever the fuck I'm doing, but I keep out of everyone's way doing it
> dj puts on a song that mixes top-40-type or trap sample into the set

oh shit, here come the candy fuckers

> inch their way into the front, start twerking their orange asses, take their phones out while they do it
> couples melt away to the back
> regulars continue awkwardly, go away
> chads get excited and grind with them
> candies demurely swat away the advancing betas
> black guys get in the front and start throwing their hands up, thuggery ensues
> I stop and go to the DnB room to wait until it's over

fuck I hate them
>>
>>134808867

>>
>>134786815
Wrong. Acid House peaked in the late 1980s - early 90s. Raves were dead by late 1995. If someone didn't attend by 1993 they missed the boat.
>>
I wish this sort of thing would come back. I missed it in the mid 90s, was too young and didn't live anywhere it went on, but it looks very fun. Been to a few underground psy/goa raves but it's nothing like the high bpm nordic track JNCO jeans mdma videos I see from 1994.

I went to some in the Midwest, techno and house parties were the best. Not a lot of kandi goofy stuff, just dark and loud music, that's super repetitive. It's always a lie when people say "there used to be less drugs"about any kind of scene like that. But it's not necessary to do drugs. There was a crazy utopian vibe and energy I can't describe. The feeling of walking out the doors at 6am totally exhausted into the cool air, I will never forget. I was born in 1982 and am 35 now, I went to high school 1996-2000. When I was in high school I remember stupid raver chick sluts were actually wearing some small plastic infant like pacifiers. I look back and wonder if that was for real at times, but it was. Like what stupid fucking whores, they wanted to send the message that they are dick sucking disease petri dishes...

Here is a good hopsin song that destroys the stupid druggie, alchie hookup culture:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRVOOwFNp5U

Lyrics:
When I say the word "fun", what do you envision? Probably drinking and smoking out with your crew And chilling with clueless women you trying to bang, bumping New Edition Is that all you think life really is Well if so, then you're a fucking idiot I honestly feel like grabbing your head and hitting it Matter of fact, you don't even deserve a brain, gimme it! Do you even have any goals Aside from bagging these hoes and packing a bowl Well let me guess, no. You're only in school because your parents make you go When all you do is play beer pong and hang out with your bros Yo, society's got you living for a whack 'cause You're a fucking adult with no skills at all You don't read any books or play ball You don't draw, you literally do nothing at all Girls, stop acting like you want a guy with traits like Romeo Bitch that's a fucking lie You always talk about how every man's fake And you can't take it and you want something real Shut up tramp, save it Twice a week you put on your makeup and damn bracelets And head to the club half-naked with your ass shaking Pulling a lowlife nigga who claim he cash making Till you let him hit and find out he work at the gas station One of them niggas got you pregnant and you can't raise it But you caused it, your actions made a fat statement You want Romeo, then act patient And stop fronting like he in the club posted in the back waitin' It's the club, where guys put on a new persona
>>
>>134785956

It was a lot of fun.

>>

Here's the thing though... you can recreate it. We didn't have the Internet when I was your age (well, we did, but not with the social networking capabilities.) Just invite the type of people you want - avoid the drug users.
Trust me on this: you can have an amazing rave with 30 people if the vibe is right.
The problem with the 90s scene is that the drug dealers took over and became "promoters". They had the money.
If you feel you're missing out on something, recreate it. Just keep it as pure as you can.
>>
>>134786815

it is not hard to put on an illegal rave yourself, that is kind of the point.

the british raves exported to america.

you can put whatever message you want in the music,

in lieu of a club night you do it yourself and you promote it with pirate radio.

the underlying message in this song is that cities are fucking shit as is modern life.

but all forms of electronic music are bad because they have been a part of profiteering on the poor and making traditional music obselete by making only machine music available since the 90s.

before it was bought out kiss was a very good station, it represented white, black and asian sounds and cultures with respect and came up against many people trying to close it down who were very powerful and would rather people have racist conflict and racially divided club nights.

people jumped in to make money off it, and it was bought and turned into a useful idiot plain urban station.

unfortunately the black white and other culture ended dominating each other in airtime competition when it was not run properly.

it was an example of true equality and not an overly black, asian or whatever station until it was bought out.

That makes sense. Add some contrarianism in there too, that makes a difference. Then you can rave from wherever if you have your mind right

In my opinion, raving is breaking free from an established society and making yourself at one with a simpler beat, away from the vip bullshit. That's why I love techno man, it just keeps going and going

It's a break from the society that we put ourselves in. Even if we hate degeneracy in all ways, raves back then were something great. Now, it's filled with gays, fags, and people just wanting to get fucked

I was DJing nightclubs before I was legal drinking age. I spun from about 2000-2003. It was quite a different time - sketchier and less fake rich stuff going on. It wasn't the bottle service culture you get in a lot of clubs now, it was more grassroots. They weren't called raves, they were called parties.

I'm really really glad that Happy Hardcore doesn't exist anymore.

Simple answer is because Dance Music became EDMâ„¢

It's the same reason why they aren't as many original and unique hip-hop artists these days as well - bling culture and celebrity culture took over. Post 2003 it was all about Tiesto. Having a Vegas residency, partying alongside all the biggest celebs, getting paid six figures to drop records for two hours. Eventually it became that people got into DJing were motivated more and more by a lifestyle and an aesthetic - an aspirational status thing - more than an actual love for dance music and playing hot new sounds for their friends and randoms.
>>
>>134840318

Punks are the sardonic edge of that shit, and in my opinion have more thrashing movements. They focus on the individual more than rave's communal thing.

>>134840343

Dance music always has been filled with sexual energy of all kinds, we were just more willing in the past to reroute it through communal movement and try to transcend into something higher-order, like reflecting on the night sky and shit. When I leave raves, I just walk around the abandoned blocks, sing on the streets sometimes, jump on shit, and talk to homeless people.

It's a celebration of not having to sit across from a fat cunt who hates me and is passive-aggressive in class every time I open my mouth... I can sing without consequence of breaking the social code, I can open my body to the things around me and actually laugh

>>134840700

Thanks everybody for making this thread work so well tonight, I needed this. I love the pictures man, I will look at them more and maybe do something with them.

Rave truly can bring people together, just look at this thread to see. I bet you ancaps, Nazis, stormfags, leftypol, old farts, younguns, all the lot are in here coming together, and we're not even on a floor, just shooting the shit... and on top of that, I'm using all you guys' music as background as I browse.

>Punks are the sardonic edge of that shit, and in my opinion have more thrashing movements. They focus on the individual more than rave's communal thing.

Its funny that you'd say that using that flag. As far as i know the whole punk scene was supported by lending sleeping space and gig spots between bands of different locations around the world, like some sort of exchange progam

Doe yeah, punk is supposed to be more antisocial, but at the same time i think there's more explicit connection between people at a punk gig that on a rave

Not necesarilly, to me punk is a marriage with truth and being brave enough to do what needs to be done when it needs to be done, however it can be done. Sometimes its inhibition, sometimes its desinhibition. The fixation with bodily fluids represents this, if you need to vomit, you vomit, no matter if the queen is in front of you; ultimately is a reaction against the hippie mindset of repressing the ugly part of what being a human means.

I remember in one of Adam Curtis films there's a scene showing a hippie commune where it all very quickly evolved into a sort of emotional politics, where the most charismatic people would hold power over others by questioning their empathy and gaslighting them, seeding guilt and shame into weak people's minds. People who ultimately were bound up by their quest for enligthenment and "buddha nature".

This is what punk is about, learning to deal with the ugly side.

Its a complete grounding to the biological, i think the rave scene is way more mental and more on par with hippies, the obsession with love nauseates me.

I'm glad I could do that for you. That's exactly how I am in a rave; I never really communicate vocally with people, just ball until a connection surfaces. I was spinning around for 10 minutes one time in the dnb room, then some girl touched my arm and taught me how to spin right and teached me some shuffling moves. She sat me down on a couch, and her boyfriend put sunglasses on me, gave me the best glove show ive ever seen, then refused a monetary tip. That's the type of connections I get at raves.

What you want is a mostly dark dancefloor with great TRACK SELECTION and MIXING, where people can escape their social anxieties and get down.

Preach it, DJ in front encourages people to get selfies with him (though I do like leaning near the table during less crowded times and wwatching the technical aspects of his DJing method), and this also makes the people with the DJ feel more self-important.

All this causes a clusterfuck in the front, one just as bad as the girls clustering at the HWNDU display, waiting for Shia to notice them.

You have to examine the psychological side of dancefloors, it is key. First of all most normy guys are afraid of dancing and seeming gay. Second of all girls dancing think they're supposed to dance slutty. Then overall people don't want to look goofy dancing. They're all obsessed with being judged because they judge others. That is the first layer you have to break through, and a good promoter knew this and would set things up accordingly conducive to help them break through their social anxieties.

This is the best thread I've ever seen in all my years on /pol/.

I was born in 87 and have always felt a longing nostalgic feeling for the 90s club scene that I was never a part of. I love the music from that era.

I've been to a few underground raves in recent years. It was fun rolling and just dancing like a maniac until sunrise, but most electronic music events do have all the negative things talked about here. The majority of the scene is bad, but I'm always keeping an open ear for something more underground and weird. But at 30 years old I think my days chasing raves are over, and I just can't be bothered with all the mainstream shit that I usually settle for.

Thank you all who posted tracks, I've saved most. You've given me a rabbit hole to fall into and explore. Thank you all who shared stories. It sounded like a magical time.

Red Pill: MDMA was produced and distributed secretly by the British Government to young adults who were disillusioned about the economic upheaval and the dismantlement of the Thatcher Era. Compare 80s UK to 90s UK. They are polar opposites in mentality. Raver culture was a distraction from all of that.
